Harry Davis says he hopes to be back in full training next month.
The defender, who signed permanently for Saints in August, has been out since March after picking up a knee injury in a 3-2 win over Dundee United.
It cut short a promising loan spell at the Buddies where he had quickly become a fan favourite witj three goals in nine appearances.
While proving to be a goalscoring threat, it was his defensive displays that won over Saints supporters with the stopper playing his part in St Mirren's survival bid.
With Davis now back running he confessed that he doesn't want to return too quickly and cause further issues, but is optimistic that he will resume training in the coming weeks.
Hopefully I'll be back in full training in October at some stage," he told stmirren.com
"I'm just progressing with my running now. It's great to be back running as you take it for granted when you are doing it.
"It all just depends on how I feel physically. I don't want to rush it because then you can get muscles strains and aches.
"You're always eager to get back as quickly as possible, but it's about being sensible with that. I don't want to break down. I want to get back and stay back for the rest of the season."
Davis has been impressed with the team while watching from the sidelines and believes the confidence built up from last season's big performances have carried on to this season.
They've been playing well," he said.
"The games I've watched at home we've been very good which is pleasing to see.
"It's great to see the lads full of confidence and now we have a run of games we'll be looking to get maximum points from it.
"It'd be nice to be back in the squad with the team doing well. It would be a change from last season.
"The gaffer keeping most of the squad from last season has been massive. We've brought the feeling from last season into this season.
"I think you can see week-in, week-out we've got a team than wants to do well for themselves, for the manager and everyone associated with the club."
