Morgan: Honour to be called up

Morgan: Honour to be called up

Lewis Morgan is a man bang on form.

The young winger took his goal tally to eight for the season after he scored a double in Sunday's win over Queen of the South.

He then celebrated that with the news that he has called up to the Scotland U21 squad for the upcoming qualifiers against England and Latvia.

Morgan has impressed while on international duty, picking up two man of the match awards for the 21s.

And he is excited to get the opportunity to test himself against some of the best young talent England have to offer, while believing his club form gives him a boost going into the qualifiers.

Speaking to stmirren.com after the news that he had been selected, Morgan said: "I didn't even know I was in it!

It's always an honour to be called up and I'm looking forward to it. There are loads of big games but the game against England is the one you probably look forward to most in the group. That's always one that's going to get more press involvement and hype about it, but we'll certainly be positive going into that and hopefully we can take something again.

"I think I just have confidence at the moment. At the weekend I wasn't feeling great but I still managed to get two goals and I was happy with my performance and the team performance. It always helps when you are going away international that you are coming off a good spell at club football.

"It's a lot different to what we are facing week-in, week-out. I still think physically this league is more demanding than what it is when you go away internationally. But I'm looking forward to the challenge and testing myself against players that are well thought of within their country."

Morgan's performances last season earned him rave reviews and the St Mirren Player of the Year award.

He's got his 2017/18 season off to a flyer and admitted he has set a target of 20 goals for this season after hitting 10 last season.

With September drawing to a close he is already almost 50% of the way towards his target with eight goals in 12 appearances this campaign and he joked that he might need to give it a rethink.

I said my target was 20 at the start of the season but I might have to revise that if I keep going the way I'm going," he laughed.

"20 goals for a winger is pretty unheard of so that's what I have set to do and if I surpass it then great.

"At the start of last season I was playing well but I wasn't getting goals. It's only been since the turn of the year that I have started consistently finding the net. Every game I go into now I'm hoping to get on the scoresheet.

"A hat-trick will be a long time coming. I've scored twice a couple of times and I think a few times I thought I was going to get that third goal. The way I'm playing now it's as good a chance to get one."

The Buddies are at home again as they host Brechin City at the Paisley 2021 Stadium this Saturday.

Despite the Angus side sitting bottom of the league without a victory so far, Morgan says the side won't be complacent and says Saints' relegation battle last season is enough to remind the side they can't take anyone lightly.

I heard at the weekend against Dunfermline they started the better team. I watched the highlights and they were really pressing to get the first goal.

"In this league there are no surprises. We've been down the bottom so we know teams can be down there that don't deserve to be so we won't be taking it different to any other team."
