Video Assistant Referees (VAR) will be in place this weekend for the first time after nearly three years of planning, development and testing.
VAR will be coordinated centrally from the video operations room at Clydesdale House, which shares its name with Clydesdale FC, a founding member of the Scottish FA that also revolutionised the Laws of the Game with the introduction of the modern-day throw-in.
VAR will be operated in line with the FIFA Laws of the Game using Hawk-Eye technology and with SPFL production partner QTV providing the central facility.
Video Assistant Referees at Clydesdale House will assist on-field referees in the event of a clear and obvious error or a serious missed incident in relation to the following criteria:
- Straight red cards
- Penalty area incidents
- Goals
- Mistaken identity
The Scottish FA have put out a VAR Explainer video that can be viewed below.
