Ethan Sutherland leaves to join Wolverhampton Wanderers

St Mirren Football Club can confirm that Ethan Sutherland has joined English Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers on a permanent transfer subject to clearance.

The St Mirren Youth Academy graduate departs the club for an undisclosed fee with potential for significant adds on and a future sell on.

The 18-year-old made his Saints first-team debut in July 2023 as a substitute against Montrose in the Premier Sports Cup. He would make a further appearance against Arbroath the following week.

Ethan joined League One side Alloa Athletic on loan in January for the remainder of the 2023/24 season and impressed as the Wasps reached the play-offs.

Ethan was involved in the first-team fold upon his return in the summer and was named in the matchday squad for all four of our UEFA Conference League matches. He would make his first appearance of the season as a substitute against Dundee United in the Premier Sports Cup and came on in Sunday’s William Hill Premiership match against Celtic.

Manager Stephen Robinson said: "Ethan made it clear he wasn’t going to sign with us at the end of the season so it would have been a compensation package.

"You’re always at the mercy of these bigger clubs. It’s a brilliant move for him to a fantastic club and Wolves have got a player with a lot of potential.

"When I first came into the club there were people thinking twice about keeping him on but with his ability and raw talent it was imperative that we kept him and developed him. It’s credit to the academy staff and now the first team staff that have strengthened him. We wish him nothing but good luck.

"Unfortunately, that’s the nature of the game. You lose a lot of good young players at this age. It’s part of the model of the football club. We sell players, we bring the next players through.

"We’ve worked very hard at putting structures in place in the academy that these players are coming physically and mentally ready and we’re starting to see the fruit of that with Fraser Taylor and Luke Kenny as well Kieran Offord and Lewis Jamieson out on loan. These players are being put out for the reason that we bring them back next season and they play a large part of our first-team squad."

Everyone at St Mirren thanks Ethan for his time at the club and wish him the very best of luck in his future career.
