Kyle Magennis: The gaffer showed faith in me

Kyle Magennis thanked manager Jack Ross for showing faith in him after he was named St Mirren's Young Player of the Year.

The 18 year-old has been a revelation in the black and white since making his Saints debut at Easter Road back in October.

Since then he's gone on to make 28 starts for the Buddies, scoring three goals in the process.

Speaking to stmirren.com at the Celebration Dinner, Magennis admits it was a great feeling to pick up the accolade and he wants to go for Player of the Year next season.

Yeah it's brilliant," he said. "For me it's been a brilliant year so to get these awards has just topped it off and hopefully I can go for player of the year next year.

"It's been crazy. Playing with the 20s at the start of the season I could never have imagined it.

"The gaffer showed good faith in me. At the time the club wasn't in the best position and he could have looked for experience, but he's put me in and trusted me.

"I feel I've grown immensely over the season. I feel like I could go into any team and fit in. The boys have been fantastic and they've really made me feel a part of it all even though I'm younger."

The midfielder believes the aim for the team next season should be to challenge for promotion to the Ladbrokes Premiership.

The Buddies brilliant run from January until the end of the season saw them avoid relegation despite being rooted to the bottom by nine points at one stage.

And Magennis says that form proves that Saints are up there with the best in the Championship.

The aim is promotion and to win the league hopefully.

"We've shown from the turn of the year that we are one of the best teams in the league so why not?

"Hopefully the gaffer will bring in a few new players and we'll strengthen even more."

The Young Player of the Year award wasn't the only one he scooped as he shared Goal of the Season with Stevie Mallan thanks to his strike in the win over Queen of the South in December.

While the teen was quick to praise Mallan's effort, he confessed his own was particularly memorable to him.

Mallan's was better," he said. "But mine was special, my first goal, and it came from my left foot which is my weaker foot."
