Match Report: St Mirren 1-3 Dundee

St Mirren's only pre-season match at the Paisley 2021 Stadium ended in defeat at the hands of Dundee.

Gavin Reilly scored for Saints in his first appearance at the Paisley 2021 Stadium, but a first half double from Darren O'Dea and an early second half goal from Marcus Haber were enough to secure the visitors the win.

Saints started off in bright fashion and could have been 1-0 up after only 17 seconds.

New recruit Reilly was in a tigerish mood as he closed down Dundee goalkeeper Scott Bain early door, forcing the Scotland squad man to weakly clear the ball to Stephen McGinn. The captain took a touch before quickly surveying his options, sending a curling effort just by the post.

Bain made a world class stop just a few minutes later to deny Dale Hilson. Hilson - who joined the Buddies last week - burst through and smashed towards the middle of the goal with Bain just managing to get his fingertips to it.

Saints had started well but it was the visitors who took the lead with a little over 10 minutes played. Craig Samson's couldn't gather Scott Allan's corner and it was bundled over the line by Dee captain Darren O'Dea.

Bain was forced into work again in quick succession when good work from Reilly and then Morgan saw the keeper have to claw both efforts away.

Dundee doubled their lead on 38 minutes when O'Dea scored his second. A short corner found the Irish defender who rose above the Saints defence to power a strong header beyond Samson.

Half Time: St Mirren 0-2 Dundee

Dundee extended their lead three minutes after the break when Marcus Haber tucked home. Allan sent the ball across for the Canadian striker who finished from close range to put the game out of sight.

Reilly pulled a goal back for the Buddies on 55 minutes with a tidy finish. The striker played a neat one-two with Kyle Magennis before drilling beyond Bain just inside the box.

The game may have been billed as a friendly but it had a bit of an edge to it with Dundee's Lewis Spence going into the book for a foul on McGinn.

Try as they may Saints couldn't cut the deficit further with Morgan seeing a shot saved by Bain with a little over 10 minutes to go.

Full Time: St Mirren 1-3 Dundee

St Mirren: Samson (Stewart 72), Whyte (Trialist 76), MacKenzie, Baird (Buchanan 45), Stelios, Magennis (Stewart 72), McGinn, Hilson (Kirkpatrick 67), Smith (Todd 59), Morgan (Sutton 82), Reilly (MacPherson 76)

Saints Star Man: Gavin Reilly - the striker looked lively in his first appearance at the Paisley 2021 Stadium and capped it off with a neat goal in the second half.

Jack Ross Pre-Dundee

Jack Ross believes St Mirren's pre-season trip to Inverness went as good as it could have as they get set to face Dundee tonight at the Paisley 2021 Stadium.

The Buddies defeated Inverness Clachnacuddin and Nairn County 5-0 and 9-0 respectively.

The squad also took part in a team building exercise on Saturday as they went white water tubing.

It was a trip that the gaffer believes was important as new players integrate into the squad ahead of the new season.

It was good," he said.

"It was exactly what we wanted from it. The two games were great and the clubs were very accommodating and hospitable. It's a nice part of the world to go up and play and what the players gave me over the course of the two games was terrific.

"We wanted to get the players away together because we have new faces and get them to spend time together.

"I think it's a very important time of the year. I think you have to get into a way of playing - habit forming - and we are really pleased with how ruthless we've been in the two games.

"Of course we were expected to win the two games but we still did it in a very emphatic manner."

The manager admits he is excited to see the side in action again after their performances in the Highlands.

He emphasised that he wants the side to get back to playing the way they did at the tail end of last season.

He said. "It goes back to habit forming particularly from middle to front because we have to be ruthless.

"In the Clach game we got to the byline 10 times and our quality from wide areas wasn't brilliant in the first half.

"We might only get there twice in a league game this season because of how difficult the opposition might be, so when we get to these areas we have to be really ruthless and efficient.

"It's about standards, demands and habits all the time and they met them and couldn't have done any more over the two games.

"I don't criticise the players from middle to front for mistakes in that area of the pitch. I expect them to make mistakes at times but I also expect them to have an end product.

"That onus is placed on them but equally they know I'm a manager that will accept mistakes in it because I want them to be positive and bold in that area.

"That's how we played in the second half of last season and that's how we will continue to play.

"With the players we've brought in we have got really good pace and energy middle to front and I'm looking forward to seeing them again against Dundee.

"It's a really good game," he continued. "It'll be nice because some of our new players haven't played at our stadium and that will allow them to get a feel for the place.

"I think the way we finished last season supporters will look forward to seeing us back at the stadium as well. It'll be a difficult match but looking forward to it."

The Buddies then travel to Alloa on Saturday to face Ross' former club a week before the Betfred Cup gets underway.

It will also be the first time Saints have come up against former captain Jim Goodwin since the Irishman left the club in 2016.

He's more popular with the fans than I am!" the manager joked.

"He's a good guy. I obviously took him to Alloa and still keep in contact with him. I'm sure the supporters that travel through will give him a warm reception and a well deserved one for what he achieved at the club while he was a player.

"Saturday is a tough game as well. They are a top League One team who will probably feel frustrated they didn't get promoted.

"The good thing about going there now with the new pitch is that it is a really good place to play. I'm still friendly with a lot of people at the club and the manager so I look forward to going back there."

The manager has added seven new faces to the squad and while he does still expect some movement in and out he says nothing is set to happen soon.

There's nothing imminent," he said. "I've gone on record as saying I would probably like to strengthen in one or two areas.

"We may look at loans the other way also as there are some who may benefit from it that aren't going to play regularly for us.

"I'd think over the coming weeks we still may be some transition in the squad, but certainly the bulk of the squad is certainly in place."

St Mirren Open Day (July 9th)

The St Mirren Open Day will take place at the Paisley 2021 Stadium on Sunday July 9th from 11am.

There will be a range of activities in and around the stadium with a bouncy castle, face painters, the Street Stuff dance team, soccer skills, beat the goalie and much more.

The players will take to the field at 11:30am for a one hour training session following Saturday's friendly away to Alloa Athletic. They will then spend an hour meeting supporters and signing autographs.

The club shop will also be open on the day, while supporters thinking about joining the SMFC 1877 Supporters Club can have a look around the facility before deciding if they wish to sign up.

The Red car park will be closed on the day for activities so those attending are advised to park in the Black and White car park.

Visitor Information

  • Electronic Ticketing System

At the SMiSA Stadium we have an electronic ticketing system in place at the turnstiles.

The process of using the system is fairly straight-forward and easy to use:

    • On entering the turnstile you will see the ticket reader.
    • Place your match ticket (with the barcode or QR code facing upwards) or smartcard – into the aperture
    • Once the ticket/smartcard is accepted into the system the green light will illuminate and an audio alert will sound after which you should hear the turnstile being unlocked
    • Push the turnstile gate and enter the stadium as you normally would.

The whole process will only take a few seconds.

Please note that there will be stewards in attendance to help where required.

  • Street Parking on Matchday

The Club has been made aware of problems occasioned by inconsiderate parking in the area of Tannahill Road.

Seemingly supporters are parking despite the presence of double yellow lines and as a consequence local bus routes are also being blocked because streets in this area are narrow and fans are parking on both sides. People, many of whom are elderly, are having to walk from Greenhill Road to their homes because buses can’t get access.

Residents who have cars parked in driveways are experiencing similar difficulties getting their vehicles in and out. On being approached by local residents some supporters have been somewhat aggressive which could lead to confrontation.

St Mirren Football Club strives to be a good neighbour and we would ask that ALL supporters attending the stadium not only park in accordance with local parking restrictions but also give consideration to the needs of local residents by parking sensibly so as not to occasion an unnecessary obstruction.

  • Picking Up & Dropping Off by Car on Match Day

We are also aware of problems with patrons parking at the front of the Main Stand to pick up disabled supporters at the end of the game. This area is a 'no parking' zone on match days (with cones on the road) and has to be kept clear for emergency access. It is an inappropriate location for disabled spectator uplifts, as not only does it cause an obstruction on the road, it also causes a danger to pedestrians leaving the stadium.

Please note that the designated pick-up/drop off points are either in Drums Avenue or the two lay-byes on Ferguslie Park Avenue.

  • Finding the SMiSA Stadium

  • Getting to the SMiSA Stadium

    BY ROAD

Follow signs for Paisley & Glasgow Airport. Exit the M8 at Junction 29 (St James’ Interchange) which is just after Glasgow Airport turn off if travelling east to west. Be careful not to exit on to the A737 which is signposted for Irvine. It is best to stay in the middle lane when passing the Airport as this leads naturally to the St James’ Interchange exit.

At the interchange take the first left onto a dual carriageway with some football parks on the left hand side. Follow this road and after a sharp right hand bend you should now be in Greenock Road. Then take your first right on to Clark Street and drive to the end of the street which is the junction with Greenhill Road, turn left and you will see the stadium on the opposite side of the road.

    BY RAIL

Get train from Paisley Gilmour Street to Paisley St James – exit from the station is straight onto Greenhill Road where the stadium is facing you. To plan your journey by rail with Scotrail please click HERE.

    BY BUS

Most buses will stop at Paisley Cross or Mill Street, from both you will see the Paisley Town Hall. From the Town Hall cross the High Street towards the Piazza Shopping Centre, when acoss walk towards the town centre until you come to Gilmour Street. Turn right on to Gilmour Street and walk towards the railway station which is about 150 yards away. From there you can get train to Paisley St James or if you prefer to walk the following routes are advised by the police:

Home fans: cross road to the left on to St James Street – follow through up Underwood Road then turn right at Greenhill Road where stadium is 200 yards further along the road. Access to the Main Stand is from Greenhill Road and the South and West Stands will be accessed from Drums Avenue.

Away fans: cross road to Love Street continue up the street till you come to Albion Street where you will turn left. Follow Albion Street until you come to the junction with Greenock Road where you will turn right. Cross the road then walk about 200 yards before taking your first left on to Clark Street. Walk straight up Clark Street to the end of the street which is the junction with Greenhill Road, turn left and you will see the the stadium on the opposite side of the road. Access to the North Stand will be from Ferguslie Park Avenue.

Kit update

We are aware of some supporters having issues with the badges on the new home and away kit.

We are working with Joma to resolve these issues and will keep fans fully updated when more information becomes available.

Chairman's Update

As the first year of our new ownership comes to an end I would like to give a personal vote of thanks to all Supporters, SMiSA members, Club Sponsors, Fans Council, Management, Staff, directors & players for all their efforts over the year.

Looking Back

There were tough periods for everyone last season but we stuck together and I believe we are a lot stronger for the experience.

We all started last season full of hope but it became obvious very early on that we were well off the pace and had major work to do to the infrastructure of the club. We made some dramatic changes and the last 6 months were an amazing roller-coaster ride culminating in a 7th place finish in the Championship and an IRN-BRU cup final appearance.

Whilst no one at the club considers a 7th placed finish as being a success the progress we have made both on and off the park has filled everyone with enthusiasm and drive and I believe we are justified in looking forward to this season with a high level of optimism.

We still have some work to do behind the scenes but I would like to think that we have demonstrated already that our positive attitude can and will get things sorted whenever issues arise.

Season Ticket Holders

Season ticket holders are the lifeblood of the club.

Their financial commitment at this time of year allows us to budget for the coming season with confidence and has given us the ability to sign and retain most of the players who played such a big part in our revival last term.

Towards the end of last season we were discounting match tickets and even giving away many free tickets to local groups to try and help build the momentum that eventually led us to safety.

We never received a single complaint from those season ticket holders who could obviously appreciate what we were trying to do. These are the guys & girls who support us through thick and thin and we will continue to try and give them additional value for that support whenever possible. Your support will NEVER be taken for granted.

Dundee Free For Season Ticket Holders

We have now been able to make our pre-season friendly with Dundee on Tuesday July 4th a free bonus for our Season Ticket holders as a small reward for your support.

Open Day Sunday July 9th

The Open Day this Sunday is a great chance for all the family to come down and meet the new players and see the squad being put through their paces. With season ticket holders now gaining free entry to the Dundee game I’m happy to say that the Open Day will now be open to all with no restrictions.

Please do try and bring along friends or family members who don’t ordinarily attend. We’d love to take the opportunity to impress and gain new supporters!

Fan Loyalty

While we rely on season ticket holders we do of course appreciate that some people simply cannot afford that outlay but still turn up every week.

We are looking at a program for monitoring our Stadia Cards that will allow us to gauge how many games people have been to and include regular attendees in certain future events.

Ralston Update

The academy has seen a major refurbishment over the last year with the formation of a new kit room, analysis room and an office for the physio and sports science departments.

We have also had major refurb works to do to the canteen, kitchen and both players and coaches changing rooms.

The work to these areas is now complete.

We have had to do a temporary repair to the gym that will see us through the coming season but we will need to rip up and renew that floor next close season.

We have completed 50% of the refurb to the grass playing area and the works to the second half will commence once the first half has taken root.

Stadium Update

With the construction of the new disabled platform I’m delighted to say that we have now regained our gold stadium status for this season.

We have started a maintenance program of re-painting all existing painted areas of the stadium. This regular maintenance is essential for the long term stability of the stadium.

We have also extended the black stripes that were painted by the Fans Council at the back of the west stand last year to the north and south stands.

As I have always said the stadium we received as part of the Tesco deal was a solid start but we needed to turn it into a home. I would like to think we have started down that path and all these small improvements will help enhance the look of our home ground.

Supporters Club

As the support grew last season so did the atmosphere and attendance in the SMFC 1877 Supporters Club.

We are looking to increase the capacity of the club with a few simple building modifications from the current 230 maximum. If you are interested in becoming a member there are still some spaces available so please email our Supporters Club Director, Alan Wardrop, at supportsmfc@hotmail.co.uk if you are interested.

For more information visit www.SMFC1877club.com or visit the Supporters Club Facebook page.

We will continue to operate the "Buddie Bus" on Saturday match days to transport club members into Paisley after games and are looking for sponsors to allow us to continue to run it for free. Get in touch if you would like to help out!

Welcome to Skyview Capital & Joma

We now have new shirt sponsors in Skyview Capital all the way from LA! I would like to thank Jim Hall and his fellow directors for their support. This sponsorship has allowed us to have the confidence to take all our kit sales in house. We have expanded the club shop and I am sure you will all be delighted with the range of Joma's product.

Hopefully you are all looking forward to next season as much as I am and I’m sure the team Jack and James have built will once again be worthy of the fantastic support you give them.

COYS!

Ross Stewart: I'm improving every day

Ross Stewart says he feels like he is already improving as a player just a few weeks into pre-season training.

The goalkeeper joined the Saints from Albion Rovers in May, penning a two-year deal.

It's a move that sees the 22 year-old return to full-time football after leaving Motherwell in 2015.

And he admits he's loving being back full-time.

I've thoroughly enjoyed it," he told stmirren.com. "Getting back in every day has been brilliant.

"The training has been brilliant with the gaffer and Langers.

"I feel like I am improving every day and I'm just looking forward to the season getting started."

The Buddies defeated East Fife in a closed door game on Tuesday night and make the trip to Inverness to face Inverness Clachnacuddin tonight and Nairn County on Sunday

Stewart enjoyed getting back to action against East Fife and is looking forward to the trip to the Highlands as the Buddies prepare for the Betfred Cup group stages in two weeks time.

It's good to get the first couple of minutes under your belt," he said.

"The trip up to Inverness will be good for us all as well. There is a team bonding activity up there as well so I'm looking forward to it.

"We've got the Partick game away on the telly and you always look forward to playing on the telly.

"I played against Livingston and Airdrie last season and they have good stadiums so they are good games to look forward to."

The goalie, one of eight recruits this season, says that he's joined a confident dressing room - one that has already boosted the new boys.

There's lot of confidence," he said.

"The gaffer has kept most of the boys that he wanted from last season and I think the confidence from those who were here last season has really rubbed off on us."

Kit update

The club shop last night received an initial allocation of home and away jerseys for the new season.

This is the first time in many years that the club shop has been able to sell the strip and shop staff worked late into last night getting what we had out and ready for sale today.

However, this may not be sufficient enough to satisfy demand and we ask that supporters bear with us as we await our next delivery.

Some pre-orders have been set aside and any that do not require shirt printing will be able to be collected from the club shop today. If your order is ready for collection or postage you will have received an email informing you. If your order still says it's processing then we haven't received it yet and it will come through with our next allocation.

We are also awaiting delivery of shorts and socks so these will not be available for collection today, but if your order included a jersey you will be able to collect it.

If collecting from the shop please bring along your order number.

We understand some supporters may be left disappointed, but we will continue to do our best to keep supporters updated about the next delivery of kit.

Lewis McLear leaves

St Mirren can confirm that Lewis McLear has left the club following a mutual agreement to terminate his contract.

The youth academy graduate made his Saints debut in a 1-0 defeat against Motherwell in December 2014.

McLear made 21 appearances for the Buddies but failed to become a regular feature in the side.

The club would like to wish Lewis all the best for his future career.
