Sutton: We've got to finish the job

John Sutton stressed that St Mirren have to keep going in their bid to avoid relegation ahead of tomorrow's match against Falkirk.

The Englishman made his 100th start for St Mirren in Tuesday night's win over Morton, becoming the third Buddies player this season to do so.

He marked the occasion in the perfect manner, scoring his 43rd goal for the Saints, as an impressive performance saw St Mirren defeat their Renfrewshire rivals 4-1 and move out of the relegation play-off spot.

Having not beaten Morton until Tuesday, the striker admits he was delighted to finally get one over Morton - not just for the players, but for the supporters who he praised for their backing throughout the season. And now he is urging his teammates to keep going until the end of the season.

Speaking to stmirren.com, he said: “It was fantastic. The result on Saturday wasn’t exactly what we wanted but it lifted us off the bottom.

Coming into tonight’s game we knew we could get out of the relegation places. We let ourselves down a couple times in the derby this season so it was terrific to get the win. It was a terrific performance from everyone, really solid at the back and obviously four goals at the end means it was a great night”

“The fans have been brilliant. St Mirren should be challenging at the top of the table and I think everyone knows that. We’ve been down the bottom and cut adrift to an extent but I can’t remember the fans giving us any pelters. It is a great result for them and I think the players are so happy for them as well.

"We’ve just got to kick on now and try and finish the job off. It’s in our own hands now. It’s a tricky run in we’ve got with away games and playing the top teams in the league but there’s no reason why we can’t do it.”

Having been in the relegation zone for much of the season, recent form has lifted the Buddies in to eighth in the table.

It's a remarkable turnaround for a side that was eight points adrift just last month.

Its brilliant," Sutton said of the changes in fortunes. "I remember the game against Ayr who was the next team above us at the time and it was such a massive result for us. We really kicked on from there.

"To be fair to teams like Ayr and Dumbarton they picked up good results as well. So we had to go on a good run of form.

"It’s an incredible turnaround. The frustrating thing is we felt we had ability in the group but now we’ve actually managed to do it on the field.”

The Buddies currently sit one point above Raith Rovers and three points clear of bottom placed Ayr United. The last four fixtures include tough away trips to Falkirk, Dundee United and league leaders Hibernian. But Sutton is confident the side can pick up the results to avoid relegation.

It's about as tough a run as you could probably get," he said. "But we’re confident and our form is good. We know we are capable of it. I think everyone will enjoy tonight but we need to concentrate on the next game. The ability is there to pick up results.”

Match Preview: Falkirk (15th April)

St Mirren make the trip to Falkirk on Saturday afternoon as they face Peter Houston's side at the Falkirk stadium in another key game.

The Buddies head into tomorrow's fixture in a fine run of form win four wins out of the last five league games.

Tomorrow's match will be the fourth meeting of the sides this season with Saints yet to get one over the Bairns.

Falkirk visited the Paisley 2021 stadium on the 1st October in their first meeting of the season. Tom Walsh’s 87th minute equaliser gained The Buddies an important point after Craig Sibbald’s ninth minute goal gave the visitors the lead.

In their second fixture of the season St Mirren took the lead as Lewis Morgan scored half way through the first half. However, Falkirk came back in the second half with a goal from Lee Miller, and two late strikes from Bob McHugh and Myles Hippolyte in an eventful game which saw red for Jack Baird.

Their last encounter came at the end of January with The Bairns making their second visit of the season to Paisley. John Baird was at the double for the away side as they closed out the month with a 2-1 win. St Mirren’s Rory Loy gave the side late hope in the 77th minute but it was to no avail as Falkirk came out the victors.

The Saints last win over the The Bairns came in the 2009/10 season with a 3-1 away win in the Scottish Premier League. Goals from Craig Dargo, Billy Mehmet and Tom Brighton sealed three points at the Falkirk Stadium back in October 2009.

The Buddies head in to the game after a huge derby win on Tuesday night. They earned a 4-1 victory, the first derby triumph of the season, with Stelios Demetriou, Stevie Mallan, John Sutton and Gary MacKenzie on the score sheet. On the other hand Peter Houstin’s side come in to the game in a mixed bag of form with three wins, a draw and two defeats. Last time out they shared the points in a 1-1 draw with Dundee United after a late goal from Luke Leahy.

Both sides come in to the game aiming for the three points for different reasons. A win could take St Mirren above seventh place Dumbarton and boost Buddies survival hopes further after finally climbing away from the bottom two spots. While three points would help solidify Falkirk's attempt to finish in second place as they aim to secure promotion via the play-offs.

Mallan: Confidence is back

Stevie Mallan believes that there was a determination from the players to get the win over bitter rivals Morton on Tuesday night.

The Buddies ran out as 4-1 victors at Cappielow, after a fine second hand performance which brought three goals.

21 year-old Mallan scored the key goal in the 46th minute to put the side 2-1 up. Further goals came from John Sutton and Gary MacKenzie to make it four wins out of the last five league matches.

Mallan told stmirren.com in the aftermath: "We got a bit of hassle off the fans after the 3-1 defeat last time out, and deservedly so - it was a terrible performance.

I think from the position were in, in the league table we knew we had a game in hand and if we got the win it would've taken us off the bottom two which we've been chasing for a while now.

"I think at one point we were 17 points adrift and for us to turn that around and get into the position we are in now, its been a fight. The new gaffer coming in has given the boys a new lease of life and installed the confidence back into us in the way we play."

The midfielder's goal came less than a minute after the restart and he confessed he was delighted to get on the scoresheet in a thumping derby win.

It was amazing," he said.

"Obviously getting a goal in the derby is something you want to do. Especially after the last game [against Morton] we got robbed with a one each draw at home, and the last game at home we deserve to lose.

"That was up there with the results we've had this season especially with the form that Morton are in at home. The performance we put in and the goals we scored were amazing."

The hard work doesn't stop though with the Buddies travelling to Falkirk on Saturday to face Peter Houston's side. The Bairns sit in second place in the Ladbrokes Championship, but Mallan believes that Tuesday's win can help them towards a positive result which would help boost their survival hopes with just four matches remaining.

It will take us into good stead against Falkirk. Its a big pitch and a good pitch to play football on. They're obviously quite high up on the form table just now so i'm really looking forward to the game.

"After the draw at the weekend, I think we've taken our frustration out on this game with a brilliant performance and getting four goals away from home. Goal difference may come into play when it comes to the last couple of games of the season. So to get a few more goals has been brilliant."

The youth academy graduate also admits it was perfect to give something to the fans after what has been a difficult season.

He said: "It was amazing to give back. You can see tonight with the derby, the weather's not been the best and in the away end there's no shelter so it's good to see a good number out.

"We wanted to say thanks to them because they've been our 12th man and we've needed them. They've came out week in week out, home and away in their numbers. The boys really do appreciate it, and hopefully they'll keep coming out until the end of the season".

Saint for a Day - David van Zanten & Lee Mair
