Lewis Morgan: We've got momentum

Lewis Morgan believes that St Mirren are building up momentum at the right time of the season as they look to haul themselves from the foot of the Ladbrokes Championship.

The winger, who spoke to stmirren.com in the aftermath of Wednesday night's 3-2 win over Dundee United, admitted Saturday's match against Queen of the South is a huge contest.

And the 20 year-old believes the opportunity to potentially come off bottom place with a win will drive the players on in what has been a challenging few weeks.

It's been a huge effort from all of the squad," he said. "Everyone has been needed with it being Saturday-Wednesday for three or four weeks now it does take it out of you.But we know how hard we work in training and we have the legs and the physicality to deal with it.

"At the start of that run we were eight points behind and now we're one point behind and are still to play Ayr and Dumbarton at home. It'll be a big game down at Palmerston and if we win that you never know it could be this weekend we do it.

"Our first target is the team in front of us," he continued. "We've got great belief in the squad that we will get off the bottom and then when we do we'll be looking up even further. But at the moment the main job in hand is to get off the bottom. We've probably got the best momentum of any team in the bottom six so we're definitely coming.

"We had a good point against Dunfermline and maybe the only blemish is the Raith Rovers game. But it's a vital point in the season and to get three wins from our last five just shows where we've come from as a team. We're going into every game now believing we can win."

Wednesday night's win came on the same day that Lewis and fellow teammate Stephen Mallan were both called up to the Scotland U21 squad for the upcoming friendly against Estonia. The winger took the time to praise his teammates and believes the efforts of the team helped the pair gain the call.

Yeah I'm delighted," he said. "The call has come and it's recognition for me and Stevie, but it wouldn't have come without the collective effort of the team.

"Everything is positive, it was a great result. We made it a wee bit hard for ourselves in the end but we got over the line.

"It's going to be a great experience and it's my first call up. Hopefully I can make that a bigger feature and get in a few more squads."

Both celebrated their national team calls with a goal each in the 3-2 triumph over Dundee United. For Lewis, it was his eighth goal of the season, but he believes he could've had more than just the one goal on the night.

I feel as if I should have more! I'd have definitely got another one when the ref has blown the whistle and I'm one-on-one at the end which killed me," he joked. "But I'm delighted to start chipping in and hopefully I can try and get into double figures until the end of the season."

The Buddies will come up against Dundee United again next week in the final of the IRN-BRU Cup and the 20 year-old thinks that the win will give the players belief that they can gain a positive result when the sides meet at Fir Park.

We've went out there and proved we can go toe-to-toe with any team in this league.

"We knew we could beat them but we've got that in the back of our mind that we've done it as recently as tonight. So we'll go into that game believing that we can get a result in the game."

Match Preview: Queen of the South (18th February)

St Mirren could move off the bottom with a win over Queen of the South tomorrow - if other results go Saints way.

The Buddies have been rooted to 10th position in the Ladbrokes Championship since match day five when, ironically, a defeat to Queen of the South at the Paisley 2021 Stadium saw Saints fall to the foot of the table.

Jack Ross' side come into tomorrow's match in fine form with three wins and a draw from their last five league matches. It's a run that has seen the side move from eight points behind Ayr United - with Wednesday night's win over Dundee United closing the gap - to just one point.

Harry Davis scored the opener before being stretchered off but only after Tony Andreu had equalised for Dundee United. Stevie Mallan marked his 100th start for St Mirren with a superb free kick catching out United's Cammy Bell at the goalkeeper's right hand post. Lewis Morgan scored his eighth goal of the season as he blasted home from close range after Rory Loy's initial attempt was blocked inside the six-yard box.

Queen of the South haven't won in their last three matches, losing to Morton and Falkirk while drawing with Dunfermline. Their last victory came at home to Raith Rovers at the end of February when goals from John Rankin and Derek Lyle were enough to secure a 2-1 win.

This will be the fourth and final meeting between the Buddies and the Doonhamers this season, with the Dumfries side holding the advantage with two wins to Saints' one.

It was a 3-1 defeat to Queen of the South at the Paisley 2021 Stadium in September that put Saints bottom of the league. Derek Lyle had given the visitors a first half lead before Tom Walsh equalised for the Buddies. But veteran striker Lyle put Queens back ahead just moments later with Stephen Dobbie rounding off the scoring in the second half.

Saints first league win of the season came back in December when goals from Kyle Magennis, Ben Gordon and Mallan secured a 3-2 win for the Buddies at tomorrow's venue, Palmerston Park. Dobbie scored a brace for the home side giving them the lead on two occasions before Mallan scored deep into injury time to spark wild celebrations amongst the travelling support.

The last meeting between the two came in January as Gary Naysmith's side ran out 3-0 winners in Paisley thanks to goals from Dobbie, Dom Thomas and an own-goal from Gary MacKenzie.

A win for St Mirren, coupled with Ayr United failing to win at Dunfermline would see the Buddies move up to ninth place. Even a point for Saints would be enough to see them move into ninth position if Ayr lose at East End Park. Whereas victory for Queen of the South would keep alive their faint hopes of grabbing a play-off spot, with the Doonhamers sitting nine points behind Dundee United.

Harry Davis Injury Update

Harry Davis looks set to be out of action until the end of the season after picking up an injury in last night's match against Dundee United.

The defender, on-loan from English League Two side Crewe Alexandra, went down in the first half with a dislocated knee cap.

Davis, who scored his third goal for the Saints in the win over United last night, will travel down south tomorrow to visit a specialist.

Manager Jack Ross said: "Obviously it's a huge blow for the player as he's come in and really established himself, becoming a real fans favourite. It's disappointing for us as well as he has settled well and been a really good addition to the squad. I've spoken with him and he's still really keen to be at as many matches as he can be, hopefully starting with the cup final next weekend."

Everyone at St Mirren wishes Harry a speedy recovery.

Reaction: Jack Ross on the win over Dundee United

Jack Ross speaks to stmirren.com after St Mirren's 3-2 win over Dundee United at the Paisley 2021 Stadium in the Ladbrokes Championship.

Goals from Harry Davis, Stevie Mallan and Lewis Morgan were enough to render Tony Andreu's brace for the Arabs meaningless.

The win moves Saints to within one point of Ayr United in the league.

Match Report: St Mirren 3-2 Dundee United

St Mirren's hopes of survival were boosted with a win over title chasing Dundee United in the Ladbrokes Championship.

Goals from Harry Davis, Stevie Mallan and Lewis Morgan helped the Buddies close the gap on Ayr United at the bottom of the league to just one point and send home the Paisley faithful delighted.

Saints got off to a dream start when Harry Davis put the home side ahead with less than two minutes on the clock. Stevie Mallan threw in an early free kick that was knocked on by Rory Loy to John Sutton who headed into the path of the English defender. Davis flicked it beyond Cammy Bell at the near post to give Saints a lead with just 100 seconds gone.

The visitors looked to get themselves back into the matches but Saints were doing well in the opening exchanges. Warning signs were there Smith robbed of the ball by Telfer who burst forward and sprayed it out wide to Nicholls. But the on-loan winger's attempted return pass to Telfer was well cut out.

Saints failed to clear from a United corner and the ball eventually found its way back to Tony Andreu who stroked home. It was a bitter blow for the Buddies who had been comfortable throughout.

United were clearly buoyed by the goal and started looking dangerous when they came forward. Gary MacKenzie had to be strong as he headed away a free kick from Charlie Telfer.

But it was the Buddies who would go 2-1 in front when Stevie Mallan scored. The midfielder - making his 100th start for the Saints - stepped up to take a free kick after Rory Loy was tripped by Willo Flood.

And the 20 year-old made sure he marked the milestone appearance in style as he caught Bell unaware, with the goalkeeper expecting a cross, firing it low into the back of the net to put St Mirren ahead for a second time.

There was concern just before half time when goalscorer Davis had to be stretchered off with a suspected knee injury.

With the match heading to the break with Saints ahead, the Buddies were unlucky not to add a third when Sutton headed just by the post from a corner kick.

Half Time: St Mirren 2-1 Dundee United

The visitors started the half in bright fashion and will feel they should have been ahead on 48 minutes after a foul by Gary Irvine gave them a free kick on the left hand side. It was a dangerous looking ball that Billy O'Brien could only tip away before Flood swung it on to the head of Andreu whose header cracked the post.

United went close again a few minutes later after a quick break and good passage of play saw the ball find it's way to Telfer on the edge of the box. The midfielder lashed it inches over the bar.

And how the Arabs would rue those missed opportunities on the hour mark when Lewis Morgan gave Saints a cushion. Smith did well to race down the right channel before expertly picking out Loy who looked odds on to score. However, his effort was blocked inside the six yard box but fell kindly to Morgan who - like teammate Mallan had been called up for the Scotland U21 squad this afternoon - was on hand at the back post to smash it into the net.

But United weren't out of it as they pulled a goal back 10 minutes later. It was Andreu as the double as the Frenchman did well to twist and turn before curling home from the edge of the box to reduce the deficit for one.

They were creating the most and having the bulk of possession making the final stages tense for St Mirren.

Then Morgan had a glorious opportunity to put the seal on the victory after being laid off by substitute Kyle Magennis in space but fired the shot over. It wasn't to matter though as Saints held on for what could prove to be a huge three points come the end of the season.
