Match Preview: Motherwell v St Mirren (5th October)

St Mirren travel to Lanarkshire tomorrow afternoon to take on Motherwell in our final match before the October international break.

FORM

Jim Goodwin's side have picked up five points from their opening seven Ladbrokes Premiership fixtures.

A 1-0 win over Aberdeen on matchday two gave Saints their first points of the season which have been followed up in recent weeks by draws at home with Hamilton and Hearts.

Indeed, the Buddies are unbeaten in their last two having drawn 0-0 with both Hamilton and Hearts at home in the last two weeks. Those draws put to an end a three game losing streak where Saints were narrowly edged out by Rangers (0-1), Livingston (1-2) and Ross County (1-2).

Motherwell have gotten off to a good start to their campaign and sit in third place in the league behind Celtic and Rangers with 13 points from a possible 21.

They come into tomorrow's match having won four of their last five in the Ladbrokes Premiership.

Stephen Robinson's side defeated St Johnstone 1-0 at McDiarmid Park last Saturday thanks to Devante Cole's first-half strike. Well goalkeeper Mark Gillespie saved a second-half penalty from Scott Tanser to secure three points.

The Steelmen, however, have lost two of their three home league matches so far this season - a 5-2 loss to Celtic and a 2-1 defeat to Ross County.

PREVIOUS

Saints were unbeaten on their two trips to Fir Park last season - winning once and drawing the other.

Simeon Jackson's goal secured the Buddies a 1-0 win in Lanarkshire when we visited three days before Christmas 2018, while a Kyle Magennis' injury time effort rescued a point in a 1-1 draw in Saints' last visit in May.

Motherwell were victorious on both of their visits to Paisley last season - winning 2-0 and 2-1.

TEAM NEWS

Only Cody Cooke is out for Saints, but the striker is making good progress as he looks to return from a knee injury.

MANAGER'S THOUGHTS

"It's always an away day I enjoyed as a player and I'm looking forward to taking the boys there as manager.

"They've had a fantastic start to the season and I think they have won four of their last five games.

"They are very well organised at the back and carry a real attacking threat going forward.

"We've worked hard during the week, the players have been excellent and there's been a real buzz about the place.

"We know ourselves we need to do more in the final third and hopefully you'll see some of the work we've done during the week come to fruition on Saturday."
