Stelios: Winning spirit remains

Stelios Demetriou believes Saints are still riding high on the crest of a wave following last season's survival.

The Buddies made it three wins from four in the Ladbrokes Championship on Saturday after comfortably seeing off promotion hopefuls Dundee United at the Paisley 2021 Stadium.

And the 26 year-old has no doubt that the momentum built up from a tremendous run of form last campaign has continued on into the new season.

But while Stelios always believed that the side could beat Dundee United, he was surprised in the manner in which they did it.

Saints were at their scintillating best with a Lewis Morgan double followed by Ian McShane's first St Mirren goal securing a 3-0 win.

Now the challenge, according to the Cypriot, is to emulate that going forward.

The winning spirit we had from last season is still with us," Stelios told stmirren.com after Saturday's triumph.

"We didn't expect that kind of result, but we believed we could get the points. We now keep going each game and try to do the same.

"You have players around you who perform that well and you can count on every single player to cover you, score a goal or make an assist.

"Every game we are getting tighter and tighter in defence and with the quality of players that we have up top we know we are going to get goals one way or another.

"The good thing has been our reaction since the Morton game.

"We knew a defeat would come at some point, but our reaction has been fantastic and now we have that winning spirit in the dressing room we aren't going to lose it that easy."

A tactical tweak from the manager has seen Stelios push up one, a role he is relishing as it allows him the licence to get forward more.

"We had some problems at the beginning of the season but the gaffer has sorted it out.

"It's a similar position I'm playing but it gives me a little more freedom to get in front.

"I know in games like Saturday that I have Adam [Eckersley] behind me who can give me a lot of support. I think we are doing well."

The Cypriot has built up a special rapport with the Paisley faithful since initially joining the club in January.

He reserved special praise for the 3,797 St Mirren supporters who backed the team on Saturday.

The fans are fantastic," he said.

"It's like they play with us. The way they support us really is like we are playing with 12 players."
