Gary MacKenzie: I could have hit hat-trick!

Gary MacKenzie believes he could've scored a hat-trick for Saints on Saturday but admitted he felt a draw was probably the right result in the end.

The Buddies halted in-form Dunfermline with a 1-1 draw at East End Park on Saturday after the defender's second half header gained the visitors a point against a Pars side that had won both their matches in 2017.

Speaking to stmirren.com after the match, MacKenzie felt like the team put everything into the match but accepted that a point was right for both sides.

I think a point is a fair reflection," he said. "I'm not saying that we are happy with it. We felt we could come here and get the win. But the way the game went I think probably a draw was a fair result.

"It was a bit end-to-end in the second half and we had to commit bodies which left the game a bit open. But you could see there was a desire to go and try to get the three points. I think all-in-all to come away from home and pick up a point at a team that are doing well just now is positive.

"It was important that we showed a response, a will to win and a desire to compete and try to outwork the other team. Players gave everything and they're in a good run of form.

"We said we had to go out and leave nothing out there and I think we did that. The pitch was heavy and bobbly so it wasn't nice football but you need to play the conditions and we done it.

"We could've won the game, but equally they could've nicked something so I think it was important we took something and look at the positives."

MacKenzie's equaliser came just a minute into the second half and was his second goal in three matches after scoring against Morton on Hogmanay. The 30 year-old believes that he could have scored more goals this season and that he and his teammates all have a duty to get on the scoresheet.

It's good to score goals," he continued. "A few weeks ago I was having a bit of banter with the gaffer and James Fowler about it. Nine times out of ten the other team's main aerial threat will pick me up so I was a bit of a decoy to take them out of the way to allow other people the chance which I wasn't happy about because I fancy myself to beat anybody.

"I reckon I could have been on near double figures throughout the course of the season and I could've had three goals today. But it's good to pitch in with goals and I think everybody has to pitch in with goals."
