Match Preview: St Mirren v Kilmarnock (29th Dec)

The decade comes to a close for St Mirren tomorrow afternoon as the Buddies host Kilmarnock at the Simple Digital Arena.

FORM

St Mirren - LDDWLL

Kilmarnock - LLLLDD

Saints come into tomorrow's match on the back of a narrow loss to Celtic on Boxing Day. Cammy MacPherson's 89th minute free-kick came too late for The Buddies after first-half goals from Callum McGregor and James Forrest had Celtic ahead.

Managerless Kilmarnock sit in sixth place in the Ladbrokes Premiership with 23 points from 20 matches. But the Ayrshire side have lost four on the bounce heading into tomorrow's match, including a 1-0 loss against Rangers on Boxing Day, and have failed to win in any of their last six matches.

A poor run of form, culminating with a 1-0 loss away to Ross County earlier this month, saw Angelo Alessio leave the club with assistant manager Alex Dyer taking over as caretaker.

Killie's last win came back in November when they defeated Hearts 3-0 at Rugby Park. Ironically, Hearts were also the opponents when Killie picked up their last win on the road back in October.

PREVIOUS

Kilmarnock edged Saints out at Rugby Park in October in the only meeting of the two so far this season.

Despite a strong showing from Saints, Gary Dicker headed home with less than 10 minutes remaining to give Killie a 1-0 win.

St Mirren lost all three league encounters against Kilmarnock last season losing 2-1 on two occasions and 1-0 on the other.

The Buddies last league win over Killie was back in April 2015 with Saints running out 4-1 winners at the Simple Digital Arena.

TEAM NEWS

Kirk Broadfoot, Gary MacKenzie and Kyle McAllister are all still out for Saints while Calum Waters can't feature against his parent club.

MANAGER'S THOUGHTS

"Kilmarnock are a decent side. They have some good players in the forward areas, they've got some good experience throughout their team and we know it's going to be an extremely difficult game.

"Mr Alessio has lost his job and Alex Dyer has come in and taken over. I suppose Alex will probably go back to doing things the way Steve Clarke did and rightly so as it was very successful for them over the last couple of seasons.

"I think Kilmarnock will bring a good support with them and hopefully our own people will turn out in good numbers as well and fingers crossed we can give them a good win to finish 2019 off."

  • Electronic Ticketing System

At the SMiSA Stadium we have an electronic ticketing system in place at the turnstiles.

The process of using the system is fairly straight-forward and easy to use:

    • On entering the turnstile you will see the ticket reader.
    • Place your match ticket (with the barcode or QR code facing upwards) or smartcard – into the aperture
    • Once the ticket/smartcard is accepted into the system the green light will illuminate and an audio alert will sound after which you should hear the turnstile being unlocked
    • Push the turnstile gate and enter the stadium as you normally would.

The whole process will only take a few seconds.

Please note that there will be stewards in attendance to help where required.

  • Street Parking on Matchday

The Club has been made aware of problems occasioned by inconsiderate parking in the area of Tannahill Road.

Seemingly supporters are parking despite the presence of double yellow lines and as a consequence local bus routes are also being blocked because streets in this area are narrow and fans are parking on both sides. People, many of whom are elderly, are having to walk from Greenhill Road to their homes because buses can’t get access.

Residents who have cars parked in driveways are experiencing similar difficulties getting their vehicles in and out. On being approached by local residents some supporters have been somewhat aggressive which could lead to confrontation.

St Mirren Football Club strives to be a good neighbour and we would ask that ALL supporters attending the stadium not only park in accordance with local parking restrictions but also give consideration to the needs of local residents by parking sensibly so as not to occasion an unnecessary obstruction.

  • Picking Up & Dropping Off by Car on Match Day

We are also aware of problems with patrons parking at the front of the Main Stand to pick up disabled supporters at the end of the game. This area is a 'no parking' zone on match days (with cones on the road) and has to be kept clear for emergency access. It is an inappropriate location for disabled spectator uplifts, as not only does it cause an obstruction on the road, it also causes a danger to pedestrians leaving the stadium.

Please note that the designated pick-up/drop off points are either in Drums Avenue or the two lay-byes on Ferguslie Park Avenue.

Match Report: St Mirren 1-2 Celtic

There was no belated Christmas cheer for St Mirren as they lost to champions Celtic on Boxing Day.

Despite starting well enough, Saints fell behind when Callum McGregor scored after his initial shot had hit the post. James Forrest doubled the lead when he rounded Vaclav Hladky to score as the visitors headed into the break in front.

The Buddies arguably had the better of the chances in the second half with Ryan Flynn and Jon Obika going close, and they finally got themselves back into things thanks to a late Cammy MacPherson free-kick, however there wasn't enough time left to snatch a point.

Jim Goodwin's side enjoyed a bright beginning and created the first chance, Ilkay Durmas' shot from Jon Obika's cutback being comfortably dealt with by Fraser Forster. It was a similar story at the other end as Vaclav Hladky easily gathered Olivier Ntcham's curler from the edge of the box. The visitors were able to force a couple of corners in quick succession but Kristoffer Ajer's headers were well off target, Odsonne Edouard then firing just over after being given a bit too much time and space to run forward.

The Buddies hadn't looked in too much trouble in the opening quarter of the game but a misplaced pass from Sam Foley was to prove costly. The ball was intercepted and sent through to Edouard, who had built up a bit of steam and was charging through on goal. The Saints defence tried to crowd him out and it seemed to work as the ball ran loose, only to fall to McGregor who rattled the post before tapping away the rebound.

In the aftermath the home side looked shaky as Celtic pushed for a quick second and it arrived just after McPherson had drawn a decent save from Forster. The Saints management team appealed for offside as Edouard gathered a Forrest pass, however he looked to have started his run inside his own half, and he again burst forward before slipping a return pass through the defence for Forrest, who drew Hladky off his line and squeezed a shot into the net from a tight angle. It was almost three just before the break as Ntcham's looped up in the air after taking a wicked deflection, however it dropped the wrong side of the bar.

Edouard had the ball in the net early in the second half but the flag had long gone up for offside. Hladky then found himself rather busy as he blocked Forrest's shot with his legs before tipping a Jeremie Frimpong effort around the post. Having survived those scares, Saints should have got themselves back into the game moments later when Junior Morias delivered a decent cross for Ryan Flynn but he could only put it wide.

Christopher Jullien headed over from Ryan Christie's free-kick as Celtic went back on the offensive before the defender made a big mistake at the other end, completely failing to deal with a high ball. That let Jon Obika in but with a tightening angle and no support the odds were always stacked against him – Forster saving the first shot before his defence mopped up as the striker tried to have another go. Another chance came when MacPherson fired in a cross but Obika was always stretching for it and the ball skidded off his head.

After his early saves, Hladky had had a pretty quiet second half but was back in action when he kept out Ntcham's drive as well as an attempt from Frimpong.

Jullien crudely brought Obika's run to a premature end with a wild swipe and was duly booked for his efforts, however the real punishment was yet to come. MacPherson's free-kick hit the top of the wall and Forster was unable to react before the ball ended up in the net.

It set up an exciting final few moments but Saints were always going to be up against it, especially with just two minutes of injury time, and they were unable to grab a second and earn a draw.

FORM

Celtic - WWWWWW

The Buddies are unbeaten in their last three having beaten Hamilton Accies and drawn with Livingston and St Johnstone.

Saints last win at home was last month when Sam Foley's late strike gave Jim Goodwin's side a 2-1 win over Ross County.

Celtic's 2-1 win over Aberdeen on Saturday was the Hoops' 10th straight Ladbrokes Premiership win.

Neil Lennon's side have only dropped five points so far this season drawing 1-1 away to Hibernian while losing 2-0 to Livingston - both in October.

PREVIOUS

Celtic were 2-0 winners when the sides met at Celtic Park in October with Mohamed Elyounoussi and James Forrest scoring for Neil Lennon's men.

That was also the scoreline when the Hoops last visited Paisley with Timothy Weah and Ryan Christie netting back in March.

St Mirren's last league win over Celtic was the famous 4-0 win in 2010 where Andy Dorman and Steven Thomson each scored a brace to defeat Tony Mowbray's Hoops side.

The Buddies last picked up a point against Celtic with a 0-0 draw at the Simple Digital Arena in September 2018 in what was ex-manager Oran Kearney's first match in charge.

TEAM NEWS

Kirk Broadfoot, Gary MacKenzie and Kyle McAllister are all set to miss out for Saints.

MANAGER'S THOUGHTS

"Celtic have been playing extremely well and even in the games they're not playing so well they still manage to find a way to win the game.

"It's going to be extremely difficult we know that. I think we have to take a little bit of hope from what Livingston did back in October albeit they have won every domestic game since then.

"There is always a chance. You've got to go into it with a bit of belief knowing that it is going to be a long afternoon but also believing that you are going to get opportunities.

"We have to make sure we go into the game well-organised and difficult to beat but also try to impose our game on them as well. It's trying to find that balance of being hard to beat but being adventurous enough to commit enough bodies forward where we can try and hurt them."
