St Mirren have been drawn at home to face Motherwell in the Fifth Round of the William Hill Scottish Cup. 

The match will take place at the Simple Digital Arena on the weekend of Saturday 8th February 2020. 

The Buddies progressed to the Fifth Round following a 3-0 win over Broxburn Athletic at the Simple Digital Arena yesterday.

Ticketing arrangements will be announced in due course. 

St Mirren booked their place in the Fifth Round of the William Hill Scottish Cup with a deserved 3-0 win over Broxburn Athletic.

After a goalless first-half, Jon Obika opened the scoring in 54 minutes to finally make the breakthrough.

Two goals in the closing minutes from Danny Mullen and Obika put the seal on the win as Saints saw off the stubborn East of Scotland League side.

It took until the final few moments to wrap up the match, but it could have been a more comfortable afternoon had the Buddies opened the scoring with a chance inside the first 60 seconds. Calum Waters low ball across the box was laid on a plate for Obika who didn't catch the shot well enough and clipped over the bar. 

The Buddies asserted themselves in the opening stages and had the vast majority of possession and territory. Junior Morias curled into the arms of Broxburn goalkeeper Connor Wallace with eight minutes played, while Ilkay Durmus dragged an effort wide on 15 minutes. 

Obika sent a tame effort into the arms of Wallace on 22 minutes after a neat exchange with Morias and really should have had Saints ahead three minutes later. Morias charged down the left-hand side and slide the ball across the area where both Obika and Durmus were waiting. The former got a toe onto the ball but it somehow creeped centimetres wide of the post. The English forward then headed past the same post just after the half-hour mark.

For all the dominance Saints were failing to make Broxburn goalkeeper Wallace work, but that would change after the interval with the goalkeeper making a good stop to deny captain Kyle Magennis on 50 minutes.

Durmus should have had St Mirren ahead two minutes later but somehow smashed wide from eight yards. 

Thankfully, the wait for the breakthrough only lasted another two minutes with Obika opening the scoring on 54 minutes. It was a scrappy goal for Broxburn to lose with a low Waters effort coming off an unfortunate Broxburn defender and ricocheting off Obika into the net. 

The Buddies fitness told after that and only heroics from Wallace kept the scoreline down. The goalkeeper made terrific saves to deny Morias twice, while he did well to push away a Mullen volley. Arguably the pick of the bunch came when he denied Jamie McGrath a debut goal on 79 minutes. The Irishman curled towards the far corner from the edge of the area with Wallace at full stretch to tip the ball round the post.

Wallace would make further saves in the final 10 minutes to stop Obika and Morias attempts, but Saints finally added a second to secure their place in tomorrow's Fifth Round draw with Mullen curling home from 20 yards. 

Mullen then turned provider a minute later when he slammed the ball across the ball to meet the chest of Obika to put the icing on the cake for the Buddies.

This is St Mirren’s first match of 2020 following the Ladbrokes Premiership winter break.

The Buddies closed off 2019 with a 1-0 win over Kilmarnock at the Simple Digital Arena. Ilkay Durmus’ 17th minute strike was enough to separate the two sides and give Saints a well-deserved three points.

The Buddies have lost only one of their last five matches – a narrow 2-1 loss at home to league leaders Celtic on Boxing Day.

Broxburn were due to face Linlithgow Rose last Saturday in the East of Scotland Football League Premier Division but a waterlogged park saw the match postponed.

The West Lothian side currently sit in sixth place in the EOSFL Premier Division having picked up 25 points from 14 matches.

PREVIOUS

Tomorrow’s match will be the first ever meeting of the two sides.

St Mirren reached the fifth round of the William Hill Scottish Cup last season – defeating Alloa 3-2 at the Simple Digital Arena in January 2019 before losing 2-1 to Dundee United at the same venue less than a month later.

Competing in the Scottish Cup for the first time, Broxburn have already had to negotiate five ties just to reach this point in the competition having entered at the Preliminary Round 1 stage.  

A 2-0 win over Tynecastle saw them through to face junior side Girvan Preliminary Round 2. After beating the Ayrshire side 1-0, Broxburn entered the Scottish Cup proper taking on East Stirlingshire in the first round.

The East of Scotland League side edged out the Lowland League outfit 3-2 to set up a second-round tie with Cowdenbeath.

A late goal from their captain Nicky Locke saw them secure a replay with the League Two side after a 1-1 draw at Central Park. Broxburn ran out emphatic winners in the replay defeating the Blue Brazil 3-0.

A 1-0 win away to Inverurie Loco Works saw Broxburn reach the fourth-round to set up tomorrow’s match.

Akin Famewo, Conor McCarthy and Jamie McGrath are all set to make their St Mirren debuts after signing for Saints last week.

Kirk Broadfoot has trained this week but the manager believes tomorrow comes too soon for the experienced defender.

Gary MacKenzie and Kyle McAllister remain out.

Jim Goodwin has encouraged Saints fans to come out in numbers and back the team in their William Hill Scottish Cup Fourth Round tie against Broxburn Athletic tomorrow.

The Buddies are in action for the first time in 2020 following the winter break as they host the East of Scotland League side at the Simple Digital Arena tomorrow afternoon.

It's been a tie that have captured the imagination of the visiting support with Broxburn having sold out their full allocation of tickets.

And now the Saints gaffer hopes that the home fans will also show up in good numbers to give the team their backing.

It’s important that we get a good home support tomorrow," he told stmirren.com.

"Hopefully they can come and be a part of what we hope will be a good cup run. It would be nice to say that you were there from the beginning and you just never know.

"I have to give Broxburn great credit for the amount of tickets that they have sold. To be bringing 1600 fans for any club is quite incredible so fair play to them.

"I think the weather is to be decent and we’ll have a few guys making their debuts who would love to see what the home support can be so hopefully we can get as good a home support as possible."

New signings Akin Famewo, Conor McCarthy and Jamie McGrath have all trained this week after joining the Buddies last week. 

Jim confirmed that all three are likely to make their St Mirren debuts in tomorrow’s match with Conor McCarthy set for his first St Mirren start.

Conor [McCarthy] will start the game and Jamie [McGrath] will come on at some point.

"It’s important that we get those boys up to speed and they get their fitness up quickly so they can help us in the run-in.

"It’s invaluable for the Irish boys as they haven’t had a game since late October.

"We’ve worked hard on their fitness over the last couple of weeks and now it’s about getting them minutes and some game time."

'First Scorer' lets fans predict in advance of the game who they think will score St Mirren's first goal in Saturday's match against The Brox.

From all of those who guess correctly, a winner will be picked at random and they will win a box of a dozen doughnuts which will be delivered to their seat right after the goal is scored!

To enter all you have to do ahead of the game is post your prediction of the first St Mirren scorer on Facebook or Twitter using the hashtag #Saints1stgoal.

The lucky winner will then be contacted to confirm which stand they will be in with the row and seat number so that the prize can be delivered to them.

Man of the Match Vote

We are giving fans the opportunity to vote for the man of the match and also put two lucky fans in with the chance of winning a £10 voucher for the Club Shop.

Every home game we’ll throw open the voting on the 60 minute mark for 20 minutes where votes can be cast on Facebook and Twitter. All you have to do is use the hashtag #SMFCMOM followed by the name of the player you are voting for, eg '#SMFCMOM MAGENNIS'.

With 10 minutes of the game remaining all the votes will be counted then the Stadium Announcer will confirm the winning player over the tannoy system.

Bung a Baw

Paisley Panda will host the ever-popular match day competition 'Bung a Baw' during the half-time break of Saturday’s match against Broxburn Athletic.

To take part in 'Bung a Baw' fans need to purchase a small foam ball which is numbered and they will then have a chance to throw their ball towards our club mascot Paisley Panda in front of the Family Stand. Each person will have 60 seconds to do this and the winner will be the person who has thrown the ball closest to the feet of the Panda. The winner will be confirmed over the PA system.

The competition is sponsored by Glen-Bun Bakery who are supplying a full tray of yummy cakes as the prize for the contest winner.

The competition this week is FREE to enter. The balls will be available from sellers inside the Family Stand in the 30 minutes leading up to kick-off and then again in the first 5 minutes of half-time before the competition starts (subject to availability). Each ball is numbered and participants will also get a ticket with the corresponding number which they will use to claim the prize if they win.

'Bung a Baw' continues to be very popular so Paisley Panda advises that you get in early on Saturday to get your ball to take part.
