Match Report: St Mirren 1-2 Hibernian

Junior Morias' first St Mirren goal wasn't enough to prevent the Buddies falling to a frustrating defeat at home to Hibernian.

Saints created numerous chances throughout the 90 minutes but it was goals either side of half-time from Christian Doidge and substitute Stevie Mallan that gave the visitors a narrow 2-1 win.

The Buddies started on the front foot with Ilkay Durmus had the first half-chances - sending well wide from distance on four minutes before slipping on the edge of the box a few minutes later and seeing his resultant effort trickle wide.

Saints had the best chance of the match on 24 minutes when a brilliant ball in from Calum Waters on the left-hand side met Kyle Magennis in the box. The midfielder rose the highest but headed over from six yards.

Two minutes later it was Durmus' turn to send a pinpoint cross in from the same position as Waters. The Turkish winger's ball found Ryan Flynn at the back post. Flynn's effort was blocked with Sean McLoughlin screwing a header wide from the resultant corner.

And despite Saints' chances it was Hibernian who took the lead just two minutes later. Christian Doidge kept his good run of goalscoring form for the visitors when he headed the opener from ex-Saint Jason Naismith's cross. It appeared to take a slight deflection off the head of Gary MacKenzie as it looped over Vaclav Hladky.

Jon Obika should have gone one-on-one with Maxwell five minutes after Hibernian's opener when the ball fell kindly into his path, but the big striker got the ball caught up in his feet and could only win a corner. Saints continued to force a lot of pressure before the end of the half - winning a number of corners but failing to create any danger from them.

The Buddies started the second-half strongly and had a penalty appeal turned down on 55 minutes when Sam Foley went down in the box. Referee Alan Newlands was unmoved.

With around 25 minutes of the game remaining Jim Goodwin made his first change with Danny Mullen coming on in place of Durmus. The substitute was presented with a great chance to equalise just a few minutes after taking to the field when the ball fell to him in space inside the box but he blasted over from a tight angle.

Three minutes later the striker went agonisingly close to bringing Saints level. A strong tackle from MacKenzie deep in the St Mirren half sent the Buddies scurrying forward on the counter. Mullen picked the ball up on the left, cut inside and curled low towards the far post. It looked like it was heading in all day long but cracked off the post before the offside flag denied Obika on the follow up.

There were just under 10 minutes to go when Hibernian were awarded a penalty after MacKenzie fouled Martin Boyle inside the Saints box. There was no debating the referee's decision and former Buddie Stevie Mallan stepped up to double the visitors lead.

Saints kept at Hibernian as they searched for a way back into the match. Sam Foley, man of the match on the evening, went so close to added to his goal on Saturday after a terrific solo run which saw him curl just wide of Maxwell's far post.

The Buddies would get a goal back in the first minute of stoppage time. Neat footwork from Mullen saw the striker get a shot away on the edge of the area. Maxwell was equal to it but it fell for substitute Junior Morias who slammed home to score his first St Mirren goal. Unfortunately for Saints it was too little too late as Hibernian took the points back to Edinburgh.

Match Preview: St Mirren v Hibernian (26th Nov)

It's home again for Saints as we host Hibernian in the Ladbrokes Premiership.

FORM

St Mirren - WLLLWL

Hibernian - WWLDDD

St Mirren are looking to make it two wins on the bounce for the first time this season following Saturday's 2-1 win over Ross County.

The Buddies fell behind to Brian Graham's 24th minute strike, but Sean McLoughlin scored his first St Mirren goal on the edge of half-time to draw Saints level. With just a few minutes of the match remaining, Sam Foley sealed three valuable points for Jim Goodwin's side with a terrific finish from 18 yards.

Brian Graham's goal was just the second Saints have conceded at home in the league this season and was the first goal conceded at home in the league from open play since a 1-1 draw with St Johnstone in April.

Saturday's win made it three wins from six at home in the league for the Buddies this season and two from the last two.

Hibernian come into tonight's match having won their last two matches. Jack Ross, appointed Hibernian manager last week, led his side to a 3-1 win over Motherwell on Saturday in his first match in charge. That win came off the back of an impressive 4-1 win away to St Johnstone before the international break.

PREVIOUS

Saints were narrowly beaten by a late Scott Allan goal when the sides met on the opening day of the 2019/20 season at Easter Road.

The Buddies looked good value for a point but, with less than five minutes remaining, Allan netted a winner for the home side.

Hibernian were victorious on both of their visits to Paisley last season - winning 1-0 in September 2018 and 3-1 in January 2019.

St Mirren's last win over Hibernian came at the Simple Digital Arena in March 2017. Stelios Demetriou scored either side of half-time to give Saints an important 2-0 win as we went on to complete the 'great escape' and avoid relegation to League One.

FAMILIAR FACES

The Edinburgh side will bring a number of familiar faces to Paisley this evening.

Hibernian manager Jack Ross spent two years at St Mirren as a player and managed the Buddies to the Ladbrokes Championship title and promotion to the Premiership in 2018. He is assisted at the Hibees by another ex-Buddie, John Potter.

The Hibernian playing squad also boasts a number of ex-Saints with St Mirren Youth Academy graduates Jason Naismith and Stevie Mallan among their ranks as well as Darren McGregor.

ONES TO WATCH

After a slow start to life at Hibernian, Christian Doidge has hit form in recent weeks scoring four goals in his last two games which includes a hat-trick in the 4-1 win at St Johnstone.

Scott Allan has impressed at Easter Road since rejoining the Edinburgh side from Celtic in the summer. It was Allan who hit the winner when the sides last met on the opening day of the season.

TEAM NEWS

Only Kirk Broadfoot is out for Saints.

MANAGER'S THOUGHTS

"Hibs are a very good team and have obviously had a really good lift with Jack going into the club as well. They have got a really big squad and have got a lot of quality to choose from so we'll have to make sure we are at it.

"Jack is a good guy. He has a good manner about him, we are very similar in terms of how we want to play the game. Hopefully that will make for a very good and very entertaining game.

"I hope the fans give him a warm welcome because I think he deserves that. But as soon as the referee blows that whistle and the game kicks off it is important to remember that he is the enemy after that and we want to try and make his night as difficult as possible."

Visitor Information

  • Electronic Ticketing System

At the SMiSA Stadium we have an electronic ticketing system in place at the turnstiles.

The process of using the system is fairly straight-forward and easy to use:

    • On entering the turnstile you will see the ticket reader.
    • Place your match ticket (with the barcode or QR code facing upwards) or smartcard – into the aperture
    • Once the ticket/smartcard is accepted into the system the green light will illuminate and an audio alert will sound after which you should hear the turnstile being unlocked
    • Push the turnstile gate and enter the stadium as you normally would.

The whole process will only take a few seconds.

Please note that there will be stewards in attendance to help where required.

  • Street Parking on Matchday

The Club has been made aware of problems occasioned by inconsiderate parking in the area of Tannahill Road.

Seemingly supporters are parking despite the presence of double yellow lines and as a consequence local bus routes are also being blocked because streets in this area are narrow and fans are parking on both sides. People, many of whom are elderly, are having to walk from Greenhill Road to their homes because buses can’t get access.

Residents who have cars parked in driveways are experiencing similar difficulties getting their vehicles in and out. On being approached by local residents some supporters have been somewhat aggressive which could lead to confrontation.

St Mirren Football Club strives to be a good neighbour and we would ask that ALL supporters attending the stadium not only park in accordance with local parking restrictions but also give consideration to the needs of local residents by parking sensibly so as not to occasion an unnecessary obstruction.

  • Picking Up & Dropping Off by Car on Match Day

We are also aware of problems with patrons parking at the front of the Main Stand to pick up disabled supporters at the end of the game. This area is a 'no parking' zone on match days (with cones on the road) and has to be kept clear for emergency access. It is an inappropriate location for disabled spectator uplifts, as not only does it cause an obstruction on the road, it also causes a danger to pedestrians leaving the stadium.

Please note that the designated pick-up/drop off points are either in Drums Avenue or the two lay-byes on Ferguslie Park Avenue.

  • Finding the SMiSA Stadium

  • Getting to the SMiSA Stadium

    BY ROAD

Follow signs for Paisley & Glasgow Airport. Exit the M8 at Junction 29 (St James’ Interchange) which is just after Glasgow Airport turn off if travelling east to west. Be careful not to exit on to the A737 which is signposted for Irvine. It is best to stay in the middle lane when passing the Airport as this leads naturally to the St James’ Interchange exit.

At the interchange take the first left onto a dual carriageway with some football parks on the left hand side. Follow this road and after a sharp right hand bend you should now be in Greenock Road. Then take your first right on to Clark Street and drive to the end of the street which is the junction with Greenhill Road, turn left and you will see the stadium on the opposite side of the road.

    BY RAIL

Get train from Paisley Gilmour Street to Paisley St James – exit from the station is straight onto Greenhill Road where the stadium is facing you. To plan your journey by rail with Scotrail please click HERE.

From the Town Hall cross the High Street towards the Piazza Shopping Centre, when acoss walk towards the town centre until you come to Gilmour Street. Turn right on to Gilmour Street and walk towards the railway station which is about 150 yards away. From there you can get train to Paisley St James or if you prefer to walk the following routes are advised by the police:

Home fans: cross road to the left on to St James Street – follow through up Underwood Road then turn right at Greenhill Road where stadium is 200 yards further along the road. Access to the Main Stand is from Greenhill Road and the South and West Stands will be accessed from Drums Avenue.

Away fans: cross road to Love Street continue up the street till you come to Albion Street where you will turn left. Follow Albion Street until you come to the junction with Greenock Road where you will turn right. Cross the road then walk about 200 yards before taking your first left on to Clark Street. Walk straight up Clark Street to the end of the street which is the junction with Greenhill Road, turn left and you will see the the stadium on the opposite side of the road.
