It was a day to forget in the capital as Saints fell to a 5-2 defeat against Hearts at Tynecastle in the Ladbrokes Premiership.
The Buddies twice came from behind in the first-half to level but still went into the break 3-2 down. And a disappointing day was compounded by second half goals from Jamie Walker and Jake Mulraney gave the Edinburgh side an emphatic win.
Jim Goodwin made two changes to the side that lost 2-0 at Celtic Park the previous midweek. Tony Andreu and Danny Mullen came in for Ryan Flynn and Ilkay Durmus who dropped to the bench.
Saints came into the match bottom of the table but level on points with Hearts and could have moved up to eighth place with a win depending on results elsewhere.
But it was the hosts who seized the initiative, taking the lead with just six minutes on the clock. The Jambos won a corner after a good break from Uche Ikpeazu. Andy Irving swung the low ball in to Steven Naismith who peeled away from the Saints defence and clipped into the back of the net at the front post.
It was the exactly the sort of start the Buddies wanted to avoid, but despite a half-chance from Ikpeazu a few minutes later the Saints response was decent. Good pressure on the Hearts defence by Jon Obika won the away side a corner on 16 minutes. Danny Mullen went down inside the box after the ball was swung in but referee Euan Anderson was unmoved.
Five minutes later Saints were level. Stephen McGinn forced Hearts goalkeeper Joel Pereira to push away a drive from the edge of the area. The Jambos couldn't clear their lines allowing the ball to come back into the box with Sam Foley swinging the ball into the box on to the head of Andreu who nodded down perfectly into the direction of an unmarked Obika. The striker finished with aplomb to make it 1-1 and get his second goal in St Mirren colours.
However, less than 10 minutes later Hearts were in-front for a second time. A throw-in from the left found Ikpeazu at a tight angle. Vaclav Hladky came out to close the angle but the striker still got a shot away that unfortunately came off the face of defender Sean McLoughlin and landing in the back of the net.
It was setback for Saints who had settled into the game, but they responded in perfect fashion - levelling just three minutes later. The Hearts defence switched off as Hladky launched the ball forward allowing Mullen the chance to race clear on goal. The striker made no mistake as he kept his composure to slot beyond Pereira to get the Buddies level for a second time.
With just two minutes to go until half-time Hearts went 3-2 ahead. The Saints defence didn't deal with Michael Smith's cross allowing Ollie Bozanic to head home from close range.
Sam Foley went close to getting Saints level for a third time a minute later when he rose highest to meet an Andreu free-kick from the left but nodded just wide.
Coming out after the break it was imperative that Saints got the next goal if they wanted to get anything from the match. But the second half got off to the worst possible start as Jamie Walker headed home within the first minute of the restart to put Hearts 4-2 ahead.
That goal looked to effectively seal the match for the hime side. Not long after the hour mark Andreu smashed a free-kick well over the bar from 30 yards, while a few minutes later the Frenchman also flashed a half-volley over from the edge of the area.
There were 13 minutes remaining when Jake Mulraney put the seal on a good day for the home side with an excellent finish from 20 yards. The substitute played a neat one-two with Naismith on the left touchline, drifted inside and curled high into the right corner of the net to make it 5-2.
Sean McLoughlin almost grabbed a consolation with less than 10 minutes remaining after a powerful effort from 35 yards that Pereira did brilliantly to tip over the bar, while Hladky made a good stop to push Mulraney's attempt wide to deny Hearts a sixth a few minutes later.
Up next is Ross County at home following the international break and with three of the next four matches at the Simple Digital Arena Jim Goodwin's men will be desperate to put today's result behind them and try to lift themselves from the foot of the table.

A disappointed Jim Goodwin gives his reaction to today's 5-2 loss away to Hearts.
St Mirren are off to Scotland's capital tomorrow afternoon as Jim Goodwin's side face managerless Hearts at Tynecastle.
FORM
St Mirren - LLWLDD
Hearts - LLDDLD
Results last midweek saw St Mirren fall to the bottom of the Ladbrokes Premiership.
The Buddies, who weren't in action at the weekend due to a fixture clash with the Betfred Cup semi-final, lost 2-0 to Celtic at Celtic Park last Wednesday. That result, coupled with a 1-0 defeat away to St Johnstone for Hearts, a loss that saw them part company with Craig Levein as manager, and a 2-2 draw for Hibernian against Livingston, saw Saints finish the evening in 12th place.
Jim Goodwin's side have yet to take a point on the road this season, but have only lost two of those six away games by more than one goal.
The Jambos sit level on points with Saints, but are one place above due to goal difference. They have failed to win in their last six and have won just once in the league this season - a 2-1 victory at Easter Road in the Edinburgh derby back in September.
Austin McPhee is in temporary charge of the Edinburgh side following the Levein's departure but he couldn't help Hearts book a place in the Betfred Cup final last Sunday as they lost 3-0 to Rangers at Hampden.
A win for either side tomorrow could see them move up to eighth in the league depending on results elsewhere.
PREVIOUS
St Mirren have already taken on Hearts this season. The two were unable to be separated in a 0-0 draw at the Simple Digital Arena in the Ladbrokes Premiership at the end of September.
The Buddies last visit to Tynecastle was in February of this year with Saints coming from behind to pick up a point in a 1-1 draw.
St Mirren's last win against Hearts was in November 2018 as a double from Adam Hammill gave the Buddies a 2-0 win at the Simple Digital Arena. While our last win at Tynecastle came back in October 2013 with John McGinn and Paul McGowan on the scoresheet as Saints won 2-0.
Hearts last win over Saints came in the first meeting of the two at Tynecastle last season. Steven Naismith scored a hat-trick in a 4-1 win for the hosts in August 2018.

However, the match will come too soon for Kyle McAllister. The manager does, however, expect the winger to be available for the upcoming Ross County match.

"We've not had a good enough points return from the opening round of games and we've got to try and improve on that in the second round of games. That's starts this Saturday at Tynecastle.
"The league is extremely tight and I think it is going to remain that way right till the end. I think that sixth place in the top half will be up for grabs and I think it's going to be very exciting for a number of us.
"We have to start picking up points on the road. Our away form has been poor and we'll look to do something about that this weekend.
"It's always a great away day. It's always a good atmosphere, the pitch is always in good condition and our boys will certainly look forward to it."

Cody Cooke played 60 minutes for the St Mirren Reserves yesterday afternoon as he continued his recovery from an injury that has ruled him out for over three months.
The forward has been on the sidelines following a knee ligament injury sustained in a Betfred Cup match against Albion Rovers at the end of July.
The initial diagnosis appeared bleak for Cody who looked set to be ruled out for up to nine months.
But the Englishman has battled back quicker than expected and now hopes to be in contention for a place in the squad for the first team's trip to Edinburgh to face Hearts on Saturday.
Speaking to stmirren.com in the aftermath of the Reserves' 3-1 league defeat to Hamilton Academical, Cody says he'll have to work hard to earn his place in the squad and knows that any decision for him to be involved on Saturday is up to Jim Goodwin.
There’s definitely a chance but that’s going to be up to the manager," he said.
"For myself I’ll certainly be looking towards Saturday but I am under no illusion that I’m going to be chucked back in.
"There are 18 places in the squad. Everyone has to earn the right and there’s a squad of players here who want to be in that 18.
"Even if it’s not this week it gives me another couple of weeks to get myself 100% to where I want to be and if it’s not this weekend then hopefully I’ll be in and around for the game against Ross County.
"If you are not involved all you can do is hope that the boys do the business and get something from the game at the weekend. Everyone knows how big the game is."
As any footballer will tell you, a spell on the sidelines with injury can take it's toll mentally as well as physically.
And while Cody admits it's a challenging time he stressed that he's always been aware of the ups and downs of football.
It’s a huge mental test for anyone whether it’s a couple of weeks or whether it will be three or four months like I was.
"You are in the gym most days on your own and you feel kind of separate from the team so of course it’s going to be difficult.
"But you have got to look at the light at the end of the tunnel and that’s what I have done towards the last three or four weeks knowing I had a couple of games coming up to get some minutes.
"You have little goals along the way and once you are back training and back on the pitch it’s a different story.
"Everyone here has been brilliant with me making sure I’m alright and little things like that make you feel like you are still a part of it.
"I feel good," he continued.
"I think the most important thing at this stage is to feel confident and to feel strong after such a long time on the sidelines. It’s all moving forward and it’s all positive.
"You know that it is always going to be ups and downs and that’s how I have treated it.
"I know it is going to be a rollercoaster from start to finish and whether that is injuries, change of manager, scoring hat-tricks, not scoring, there’s always going to be ups and down.
"I don’t take the lows too low and I don’t take the highs too high and that’s how I have managed things and kept as level-headed as I can.
"All I can do is focus on me and making sure I can be available to the manager and whatever happens happens."
To say it's been an eventful 18 months for Cody since joining the Buddies in the summer of 2018 would be an understatement.
The striker has played under three managers and suffered frustrating injuries that have curtailed his opportunities since he made the leap from part-time to full-time football at the age of 25 when he swapped Truro City for Paisley.
But despite the obstacles that have been placed in front of him, Cody is happy with how he has progressed and hopes he's still only at the beginning of a full-time career in football.
Full-time is obviously completely different and there have been huge adjustments.
"Whether that has been lifestyle changes, diet or anything like that everything is different.
"I’d like to think I have taken that in my stride even though I have had injuries at difficult times.
"A lot of them have been things I’ve had no control over and most recently with the knee issue it was a freak thing that just happened at the time. There’s nothing that you can change lifestyle wise for that.
"I’ve enjoyed every step and hopefully this is just the start of my full-time career and I can stay in it for as long as I possibly can. I’ve enjoyed every moment."
Cody also reserved praise for the manager and says small gestures from the gaffer have gone a long way in his battle to return from injury.
The gaffer has been brilliant since he has come in," he said.
"I have really enjoyed how he works, how demanding he is from players and just the clarity we have in every aspect of what is going on.
"That might sound like a small thing but it’s huge to know where you have got to be and what you are doing and all these things. He’s been brilliant with that in terms of the whole group.
"In terms of the injury side he pops his head in at the gym and checks in that you are alright. Again that might seem like a small thing but it goes a long way.
"Since I have been back on the pitch training he has been really encouraging and he’s even done a few runs with me at the same time to keep his own fitness up.
"Little things like that go a long way. Ultimately you are working your socks off every single day for him and for the club and it’s nice to get that back from him."
