Reaction: Oran Kearney Post Rangers

St Mirren manager Oran Kearney reflects on today's 2-0 loss to Rangers in the Ladbrokes Premiership.

Match Report: St Mirren 0-2 Rangers

Saints were unlucky to fall to defeat they went down 2-0 to Rangers at the Simple Digital Arena.

The Buddies had the better of the first half, Ian McShane and Ryan Edwards bringing the best out of Allan McGregor before Paul McGinn passed up a good opportunity in stoppage time.

Rangers stepped things up after the break but it looked as if it would be a frustrating afternoon for Steven Gerrard's side before Daniel Candeias scorched in a screamer with 10 minutes left.

To rub salt into the wounds, Alfredo Morelos added a second in injury time before Candeias was sent off in the aftermath.

Oran Kearney can at least be happy with the performance, if not the result, produced by his much changed side. McShane and Ethan Erhahon were handed their first starts of the season with Danny Mullen and Matty Willock restored to the team. Rangers gave a debut to Eros Grezda with McGregor back in goals.

McShane nearly marked his return to the team in style, his early free-kick clipping the top of the wall only to be turned behind by McGregor. Rangers countered from the corner that followed but Anton Ferdinand was in the right place to block Ovie Ejaria's shot. Saints skipper Stephen McGinn then tried to add to his collection of spectacular goals against the visitors, the ball breaking to him just inside their half and, with McGregor out of position, he thumped it towards goal only to see it go wide.

The Buddies were causing the visitors some problems in the final third, Edwards outmuscling the defence to get on the end of McShane's cross but his shot was parried by McGregor before it fell onto the roof of his net. Connor Goldson had a header from a Rangers corner blocked before his side had a penalty appeal turned down for a challenge on Ejaria.

As Saints tried to break, play was stopped for Goldson's challenge on Simeon Jackson but the message didn't seem to reach Jack as he then clattered into Mullen, the midfielder being booked for his troubles. Scott Arfield followed him into Willie Collum's book a few minutes later for a challenge on Stephen McGinn, Erhahon soon joining him for a foul on Ryan Kent.

The Liverpool loanee nearly gave his side the lead just before the break, firing the ball across goal and beyond Craig Samson but also the far post, his shot just beyond the reach of the onrushing Morelos. Saints went even closer in the final seconds of stoppage time, Edwards playing a corner back into the mix and when McGregor spilled it Paul McGinn pounced but the fullback poked it into the side netting.

Perhaps there was something wrong with the goalmouth as Samson had the same problem early in the second half, spilling a shot from Ejaria before Erhahon blocked Grezda's attempt from the follow-up. Rangers were beginning to click through the gears, a fine passing move ending with Grezda hitting the post when it looked like he'd mark his debut with a goal. It was to prove his last involvement as he was immediately replaced by Candeias.

Willock looked to have sent Jackson through on goal only for the offside flag to go up, although McGregor blocked the striker's shot with his legs anyway. There was then a huge let-off for Saints as Rangers tried on numerous attempts to force the ball home, Samson and his defenders flinging themselves in front of everything. They seemed to have escaped only for the ball to be cleared as far as Jack at the edge of the box, however he shot wide.

The Gers were fortunate to get a free-kick in a dangerous position after McShane was harshly booked for a challenge on Ejaria but thankfully James Tavernier curled it a few yards over the bar.

The visiting fans were getting increasingly frustrated with their side's decision making in the final third, something which heightened when Tavernier bizarrely lobbed the ball over the goal when he had far better options open.

However, with 10 minutes left all that was forgiven as Rangers took the lead with the sort of goal their manager would have been proud of. Candeias picked up the ball just outside the box and took one touch to steady himself before sending a scorcher into the top corner. There was nothing Samson could do – even if there were suggestions the winger was trying a cross rather than a shot. He was perhaps a bit too pleased with himself as he was booked for his celebrations – something which would soon prove costly.

Edwards headed wide from Jackson's cross as Saints looked to grab a deserved point but instead they fell further behind in stoppage time. The ball was slipped through to Morelos and, with the flag staying down, the striker made no mistake in rattling it into the far corner.

In the aftermath, Ferdinand was booked after an altercation with Candeias, whose all-action cameo display was brought to a premature halt when he was shown a second yellow card

Match Preview: St Mirren v Rangers

The Simple Digital Arena hosts its second Ladbrokes Premiership match this week when Rangers come to Paisley this afternoon.

PREVIOUS

The Buddies and The Gers have already come face-to-face this season with Saints travelling to Ibrox in August. Goals from Alfredo Morelos and Connor Goldson gave Rangers a 2-0 win.

Rangers' last visit to the Simple Digital Arena came in May 2016.

Calum Gallagher gave Saints a first half lead, with Kenny Miller equalising for the visitors a little under 10 minutes after half time. Jason Holt looked to have won it for Rangers in 88 minutes, only for Lewis Morgan to pop up with his first senior goal to give the Buddies a share of the spoils.

St Mirren's last three meetings with Rangers at the Simple Digital Arena have saw one win for each side and the aforementioned 2-2 draw.

While two of those matches came in the Championship, Saints' win back in 2011 was in the old SPL. Rangers had taken the lead through Lee Wallace, but goals just before half-time from Paul McGowan and Aaron Mooy saw the Buddies take all three points.

THIS SEASON

It's been a tough return to the Premiership for St Mirren with Wednesday's 2-0 loss to Motherwell making it 10 games without a win in the league for Saints.

An opening day win over bottom side Dundee and a 0-0 draw with Celtic have the Buddies sat in 11th place with four points from our first 11 matches this season.

Rangers come in to today's match on the back of a 1-1 draw with Kilmarnock at Ibrox on Wednesday night. That result sees Gers sit in fourth place in the Ladbrokes Premiership - eight points behind league leaders Hearts.

Steven Gerrard's side have only won one of their five away matches in the league this season - a 4-1 victory at Hamilton two weeks ago. There have been draws with Aberdeen (1-1) and Motherwell (3-3) and losses to Celtic (1-0) and Livingston (1-0).

TEAM NEWS

Lee Hodson is ineligible to play against his parent club, while Ryan Flynn is suspended after his red card on Wednesday night.

Adam Eckersley played 50 minutes for the St Mirren Reserves on Monday, but didn't make the squad against Motherwell.

Kyle Magennis is still ruled out but getting closer, while Gary MacKenzie is still out with a long-term issue.

Simeon Jackson signs contract extension

St Mirren Football Club is delighted to announce that Simeon Jackson has signed a contract extension until the end of the season.

The forward joined St Mirren in September and initially signed a short-team deal until January.

A Canadian international, Simeon has scored one goal in his five appearances for Saints.

Simeon said: "It was definitely an easy decision.

"I'm enjoying it here with the boys. It's been great and I'm delighted to be here until the end of the season."

St Mirren gaffer Oran Kearney said: "It's imperative that we are in a position to create for him because I believe if the chances are in front of him he'll find the back of the net.

"It was only fair to do it till January at the start, but his application in training and how quickly he has got up to speed has been fantastic.

"Having players with experience is hugely important and Simeon ticks that box. He's been there and done it, but there's also still a hunger and a desire to do well."

Visitor Information

  • Electronic Ticketing System

At the SMiSA Stadium we have an electronic ticketing system in place at the turnstiles.

The process of using the system is fairly straight-forward and easy to use:

    • On entering the turnstile you will see the ticket reader.
    • Place your match ticket (with the barcode or QR code facing upwards) or smartcard – into the aperture
    • Once the ticket/smartcard is accepted into the system the green light will illuminate and an audio alert will sound after which you should hear the turnstile being unlocked
    • Push the turnstile gate and enter the stadium as you normally would.

The whole process will only take a few seconds.

Please note that there will be stewards in attendance to help where required.

  • Street Parking on Matchday

The Club has been made aware of problems occasioned by inconsiderate parking in the area of Tannahill Road.

Seemingly supporters are parking despite the presence of double yellow lines and as a consequence local bus routes are also being blocked because streets in this area are narrow and fans are parking on both sides. People, many of whom are elderly, are having to walk from Greenhill Road to their homes because buses can’t get access.

Residents who have cars parked in driveways are experiencing similar difficulties getting their vehicles in and out. On being approached by local residents some supporters have been somewhat aggressive which could lead to confrontation.

St Mirren Football Club strives to be a good neighbour and we would ask that ALL supporters attending the stadium not only park in accordance with local parking restrictions but also give consideration to the needs of local residents by parking sensibly so as not to occasion an unnecessary obstruction.

  • Picking Up & Dropping Off by Car on Match Day

We are also aware of problems with patrons parking at the front of the Main Stand to pick up disabled supporters at the end of the game. This area is a 'no parking' zone on match days (with cones on the road) and has to be kept clear for emergency access. It is an inappropriate location for disabled spectator uplifts, as not only does it cause an obstruction on the road, it also causes a danger to pedestrians leaving the stadium.

Please note that the designated pick-up/drop off points are either in Drums Avenue or the two lay-byes on Ferguslie Park Avenue.

  • Finding the SMiSA Stadium

  • Getting to the SMiSA Stadium

    BY ROAD

Follow signs for Paisley & Glasgow Airport. Exit the M8 at Junction 29 (St James’ Interchange) which is just after Glasgow Airport turn off if travelling east to west. Be careful not to exit on to the A737 which is signposted for Irvine. It is best to stay in the middle lane when passing the Airport as this leads naturally to the St James’ Interchange exit.

At the interchange take the first left onto a dual carriageway with some football parks on the left hand side. Follow this road and after a sharp right hand bend you should now be in Greenock Road. Then take your first right on to Clark Street and drive to the end of the street which is the junction with Greenhill Road, turn left and you will see the stadium on the opposite side of the road.

    BY RAIL

Get train from Paisley Gilmour Street to Paisley St James – exit from the station is straight onto Greenhill Road where the stadium is facing you. To plan your journey by rail with Scotrail please click HERE.

    BY BUS

Most buses will stop at Paisley Cross or Mill Street, from both you will see the Paisley Town Hall. From the Town Hall cross the High Street towards the Piazza Shopping Centre, when acoss walk towards the town centre until you come to Gilmour Street. Turn right on to Gilmour Street and walk towards the railway station which is about 150 yards away. From there you can get train to Paisley St James or if you prefer to walk the following routes are advised by the police:

Home fans: cross road to the left on to St James Street – follow through up Underwood Road then turn right at Greenhill Road where stadium is 200 yards further along the road. Access to the Main Stand is from Greenhill Road and the South and West Stands will be accessed from Drums Avenue.

Away fans: cross road to Love Street continue up the street till you come to Albion Street where you will turn left. Follow Albion Street until you come to the junction with Greenock Road where you will turn right. Cross the road then walk about 200 yards before taking your first left on to Clark Street. Walk straight up Clark Street to the end of the street which is the junction with Greenhill Road, turn left and you will see the the stadium on the opposite side of the road. Access to the North Stand will be from Ferguslie Park Avenue.

St Mirren FC Charitable Foundation relaunched

St Mirren Football Club is delighted to announce the relaunch of the St Mirren FC Charitable Foundation with a newly formed board of Trustees.

Alan Wardrop of Fitzroy Wealth Management, Ian Reid of Scottish Sports Futures, Gavin Whyte of Sigmoid Consulting, Paul McNeil of the Scottish Football Association and Gayle Brannigan, who will head the Trust, will be the driving force behind it.

Club Chairman Gordon Scott and Chief Executive Tony Fitzpatrick were key in the success of the relaunch and their commitment to support the long-term plans of the Trust is invaluable.

Over the course of the past six months the new team have invested a great deal of time researching the amazing work their counterparts are delivering throughout Scotland and in talking to partner organisations within Renfrewshire to identify the real challenges and needs of the local residents, as such they have created an exciting program of community projects which fulfil their key objectives and will greatly benefit the lives of those most vulnerable and in need.

Some of these programmes will be launching from December 2018 and will include a partnership with Star Project on a Men’s Shed based at the Simple Digital Arena, a 'Future Entrepreneurship' education programme, the introduction of our health, fitness and wellbeing programme 'Fit Fans' and a ground-breaking girls & women’s mental health programme.

And to complement the youth development programmes currently being delivered at the clubs boys & men’s academy at Ralston, the St Mirren Community Trust has a long-term vision to create a legacy facility. This would start with our girls & women’s football academy and then progress to a multi sports hub based close to the stadium. With no other female only facilities currently in Scotland this would be an entirely unique concept.

These are exciting times for both the club and the Trust and we are keen to engage with as many people and partners within the community as possible.

If you feel that you would benefit from taking part in one of our programmes or would like to find out more information on how to support or volunteer please email gayle.brannigan@stmirren.com
