Lewis Morgan Injury Update

Lewis Morgan is making good progress after suffering his injury at the weekend, but manager Jack Ross has cautioned that there is no timescale for his return.

A scan has confirmed the winger has suffered no break but there is some ligament damage and bone bruising.

stmirren.com caught up with the 20 year-old yesterday and while there is no date for a return to action, Morgan is staying in a positive frame of mind as he the club enters it's last six matches of the season.

Hopefully I can get back before the end of the season and feature in a few of the games because there are massive games coming up for the club and I want to be involved in it. But at the moment I'm just trying to remain positive and try not to get too caught up in it.

"I've had a couple of scans and I'm just waiting to see how that is but at the moment it's still quite sore. The swelling is going away and the bruising is coming out so hopefully that is a good sign.

"I was running full tilt and I was trying to hit the ball as hard as I could and I think the impact has snapped my ankle back. It was a sore one at the time, very sore, so we'll just have to see what's happening with it.

"They were keen to get me straight to the hospital, so the ambulance came and picked me up. But the gaffer spoke to me, he text me straight away to see how I was and he even came in during the game to say that he would have a catch up with me.

"I think everyone is together," he continued. "Everyone was asking how I was and it's great having a gaffer who you know you can speak to any time. He's great with all the lads and he's been brilliant for me.

"I've had a lot of messages from them [supporters] asking how I was and just luckily it's not as bad as first feared. Even at the games I've noticed a real difference since the turn of the year and I think the fans are seeing it on the pitch as well.

"We're both doing our part now. The fans have helped us and hopefully we are helping them enjoy their football again."

Saturday's 6-2 win over Ayr was the joint highest victory for St Mirren at the Paisley 2021 Stadium since opening in 2009. Morgan believes that the side have been due a result like that and was pleased it all came together in such an important match.

I think that's probably the first game it has all come together in terms of creating chances and taking them. We create chances like that every week and maybe we've not been taking them. But when it all clicks like that we knew at one point we were going to turn a team over and luckily it was in a massive game for us.

"It's something I've not been involved in," Morgan confessed. "We just played with a freedom, everything was clicking and we were just really ruthless. That's great for goal difference purposes because it could come down to that.

"I think everyone is really confident now. I read somewhere that over the last eight games we would be top of the league. There's confidence running through the team at the moment and we're definitely confident we can get ourselves out of this."

Gary MacKenzie: We want to be ruthless

Gary MacKenzie says he wants to see St Mirren continue to be ruthless on the back of Saturday's win over Ayr United.

The Buddies were 4-0 ahead with just 36 minutes on the clock before going on to defeat the Honest Men 6-2 in Paisley at the weekend with the defender netting Saints' second.

He was speaking to stmirren.com in the aftermath of that victory and believes that the side need to try to be as relentless as they were on Saturday as it could be crucial come the end of the season.

And the 30 year-old also thinks that teams still to play at the Paisley 2021 Stadium this season will come up against a team with a lot of confidence.

You can see how tight it is," he said of the teams involved at the bottom. "It could go down to goal difference so it's important that we are ruthless and put teams to the sword.

"You don't want to go two or three up and then keep the ball and make it easy for them. We want to give them hell for 90 minutes, put them under pressure and other teams looking at it will start questioning whether they fancy coming here.

"I think the way we played, the way we started the game, the intensity in which we pressed forced them into mistakes and we were ruthless. That's what the gaffer was stressing before the game - to play with the high intensity and also when the chances come along be ruthless and I think we did that. The only disappointment was conceding the goals but I think if you offered us 6-2 before the game we'd have bitten your hand off for it so I think it was a good day."

"Over the past few months there have been games we've played really well and maybe ended up with a draw purely because we've not been taking the chances that have come our way. But I think we done that. When the chances were there we did take them.

"The confidence going through the team, although we were disappointed to lose the final last week, there's a huge belief amongst the team and a togetherness and that showed on the pitch.

"I said after the game that this game was a bigger game than last weekend and it was important that we didn't get too down about losing the final and we got on with our main job which is getting this club to safety. I don't think we could ask for more in terms of effort and obviously the quality was there as well."

All focus for the Saints turns to this Saturday's match with Dumbarton making the journey across the Erskine Bridge to take on Jack Ross' side. While it is another vital match for the side, MacKenzie feels the team are used to the expectation placed on them.

We've been playing in high pressure games for the last three months and it seems to be that every game is a must win and we've been going out and doing the business," he said.

"With Hibs and Dundee United, Queen of the South and teams like that where you are going and having to win, we've stood up and we've done it.

"It says a lot about the boys; the character, the mentality and also the quality we have in the team. A bit of belief goes a long way and I think that's the difference now. We believe that we're a better team than we should be and we are striving under the pressure. We've showed that we can stand up and we're not going to go down without a fight.

"We know where we are and there's a huge amount of belief in our team. It was a really good day and we'll take that into the game on Saturday.

MacKenzie shrugged off Conrad Balatoni to head home Stevie Mallan's free kick to score his third goal for St Mirren and put the Buddies 2-0 in front with 20 minutes. He was pleased to get his reward after feeling he should've scored in the last few weeks.

I felt I should've scored in the last two games. You just need to try and keep getting yourself in the positions. It was a good goal, a good ball by Stevie, so I'm delighted to score again."

Reaction: Jack Ross on the win over Ayr United

Jack Ross gives stmirren.com his thoughts following the sensational 6-2 win over Ayr United at the Paisley 2021 Stadium this afternoon.

Match Report: St Mirren 6-2 Ayr United

St Mirren were in scintillating form as they cut the gap at the bottom of the league to just one point with a stunning 6-2 win over Ayr United.

Goals from Stevie Mallan, Gary MacKenzie, Stephen McGinn, Kyle Magennis, Lewis Morgan and Cammy Smith gave the Buddies a third league win on the spin - the first time the club have done so since 2008.

It was another massive three points for Jack Ross' side as they aim to avoid relegation to Ladbrokes League One.

Saints got off to the perfect start with just five minutes on the clock. It had been the visitors had had the better of the early pressure but would find themselves behind when Stevie Mallan drilled home from the edge of the box to put the Buddies ahead. It was the midfielder's 8th goal of the season as he picked the ball up on the edge of the box and sweetly finished it low into the far corner. It was the ideal way to ease any early nerves in a match that could play a significant part come the end of the season.

St Mirren took a firm grip of the match and doubled their advantage on 20 minutes when Gary MacKenzie nodded home. Kyle Magennis was tripped inside the Ayr half winning a free kick. Mallan stepped up to swing the ball into the box, picking out MacKenzie who peeled away from Conrad Balatoni and cushioned a header into the net.

And there was no let up from Saints as they went 3-0 up just moments later. Stelios, back in the team in place of the suspended Gary Irvine, did exceptionally well running down the right, twisting and turning his way into the area before picking out Cammy Smith. Smith's effort was blocked on the line as Ayr tried in vain to get the ball away from the danger area, but McGinn was on hand at the back post to guide it home. It was the perfect way for the captain to mark his 100th appearance for Saints.

At 3-0 with just 23 minutes played you could be forgiven for thinking this was all an April Fools day prank. But this was very real and the Buddies were rampant. It really should've been four just five minutes later when nifty foot work from Mallan saw the 21 year-old open up space for the shot but he sent his attempt just wide of Greg Fleming's post.

Saints fans were in dreamland and it was only going to get better when Magennis grabbed his second goal in the black and white with a little under 10 minutes to half time. McGinn did well to rob Alan Forrest of possession in the middle of the park with Smith picking up the loose ball. He slipped it through for Magennis who rounded Fleming and slotted home from the tightest of angles.

Billy O'Brien had to be alert heading into the interval and he did well to push a low effort from Robbie Crawford by the post.

Half Time: St Mirren 4-0 Ayr United

St Mirren were eager to start the second half the way they had finished the first and added a fifth goal just seven minutes in thanks to Lewis Morgan.

The winger, fresh from a man of the match performance in his Scotland U21s debut on Tuesday night, was played in with a delightful through ball from Loy. And the finish was every bit as pleasing as he walloped it beyond Fleming from the edge of the box.

However, Saints, and Morgan, were dealt a major blow 10 minutes later when he was stretchered off. The 20 year-old has attempt to run on to a flick on from Loy but clipped ankles with Mike Rose and fell to the turf in agony. It was a major blow to the youngster who has been in fine form for the side throughout the season.

The match looked to be petering out with the atmosphere dipping after the injury to Morgan. But Ayr pulled a goal back when half time substitute Paul Cairney lashed home. Saints couldn't clear their lines from a United corner and the midfielder finished low into the net.

And the Honest Men grabbed a second, much to the frustration of the home support who felt Stelios had been fouled in the build up. The Cypriot was clattered into by Cairney allowing the ball to fall to Craig McGuffie who crossed to Farid El Alagui with the striker reducing the deficit to three with a header that left O'Brien with no chance.

But such was the character and desire St Mirren had showed throughout, they made it 6-2 a minute later with Smith grabbing a much deserved goal. Josh Todd jinked into the box before providing John Sutton with a wonderful cross. The Englishman headed into the ground and watched as it came off the post, only for it to fall kindly to Smith who knocked it home.

It was the end of the scoring and saw Saints earn a massive three points to claw themselves to within just one game of today's visitors with a game in hand.
