Shaughnessy's late goal sees points shared

When Saints and Hibs met in September, Joe Shaughnessy scored a late goal to give the Buddies a point. Fast forward three months and the Saints skipper repeated the trick at a wet and windy SMiSA Stadium.

The first half was rather forgettable aside from Hibs' Kevin Nisbet twice heading straight at Saints goalie Jak Alnwick. Early in the second half the visitors opened the scoring, Josh Campbell in the right place to pounce after Martin Boyle's shot had been blocked by Marcus Fraser.

That looked like being enough to give the visitors victory, but with just a few minutes to go Shaughnessy popped up to convert Scott Tanser's cross and earn the Buddies a draw.

Curtis Main was chosen to lead the Saints attack following the injury to Eamonn Brophy with Greg Kiltie coming in for Connor Ronan. It was no surprise to see changes to the Hibs side after ex Saints boss Jack Ross left during the week, red cards for Paul Hanlon and former Buddie Paul McGinn ruling them out. Lewis Stevenson, Alex Gogic, Chris Cadden and former Paisley favourite Darren McGregor all started.

Hibs threatened early on when a mistake from Charles Dunne allowed Nisbet to send Jamie Murphy racing through, his shot being turned behind by Alnwick. The corner that followed led to a bit of a scramble before Nisbet's header was easily saved by the Saints goalie. We then had to wait the best part of 20 minutes for the next – and final – meaningful attempt of the half. It was rather similar to the previous one too as Nisbet again headed straight at Alnwick.

Saints perked up after the break but fell behind from a counter attack. Murphy found Boyle in space and while his shot was cut out by Marcus Fraser, the ball sat up perfectly for Josh Campbell and he slammed it home to the delight of the travelling fans behind the goal. The Buddies forced a corner as they looked for a quick equaliser, however Joe Shaughnessy at the back post put it well wide.

Anyone hoping that brief flurry of excitement would continue was sadly mistaken as penalty box action returned to being rare. Saints fans were given hope of a goal a quarter of an hour from the end when McGregor fouled sub Kristian Dennis just outside the box, however McGrath sent his free-kick well over. A few minutes later came a great Buddies chance when Tanser's found the unmarked game in the box but Matt Macey got down to turn it behind.

With less than five minutes to go Tanser delivered another tremendous ball from the left and this time the end result was far more satisfying, Shaughnessy arriving to fire past Macey and draw Saints level. The visitors tried to restore their lead with Alnwick doing well to tip behind a drive from Christian Doidge. In stoppage time Saints thought they should have had a penalty when Dennis went down under Gogic's challenge, however the officials were unmoved and the points were shared.

Visitor Information

There will be a very limited amount of match day parking available at the SMiSA Stadium on match day on a first-come-first-served basis at the second Ferguslie Park Avenue entrance. These are priced at £5. Cash only.

  • Electronic Ticketing System

At the SMiSA Stadium we have an electronic ticketing system in place at the turnstiles.

The process of using the system is fairly straight-forward and easy to use:

    • On entering the turnstile you will see the ticket reader.
    • Place your match ticket (with the barcode or QR code facing upwards) or smartcard – into the aperture
    • Once the ticket/smartcard is accepted into the system the green light will illuminate and an audio alert will sound after which you should hear the turnstile being unlocked
    • Push the turnstile gate and enter the stadium as you normally would.

The whole process will only take a few seconds.

Please note that there will be stewards in attendance to help where required.

  • Street Parking on Matchday

The Club has been made aware of problems occasioned by inconsiderate parking in the area of Tannahill Road.

Seemingly supporters are parking despite the presence of double yellow lines and as a consequence local bus routes are also being blocked because streets in this area are narrow and fans are parking on both sides. People, many of whom are elderly, are having to walk from Greenhill Road to their homes because buses can’t get access.

Residents who have cars parked in driveways are experiencing similar difficulties getting their vehicles in and out. On being approached by local residents some supporters have been somewhat aggressive which could lead to confrontation.

St Mirren Football Club strives to be a good neighbour and we would ask that ALL supporters attending the stadium not only park in accordance with local parking restrictions but also give consideration to the needs of local residents by parking sensibly so as not to occasion an unnecessary obstruction.

  • Picking Up & Dropping Off by Car on Match Day

We are also aware of problems with patrons parking at the front of the Main Stand to pick up disabled supporters at the end of the game. This area is a 'no parking' zone on match days (with cones on the road) and has to be kept clear for emergency access. It is an inappropriate location for disabled spectator uplifts, as not only does it cause an obstruction on the road, it also causes a danger to pedestrians leaving the stadium.

Please note that the designated pick-up/drop off points are either in Drums Avenue or the two lay-byes on Ferguslie Park Avenue.

Eamonn Brophy injury update

Eamonn Brophy could be out until the new year following an injury sustained against Aberdeen last weekend.

The forward was substituted in the first-half of last weekend's defeat and while scan results have shown it's nothing too serious, Brophy will miss the next few weeks of action.

It's nothing too major," the manager told press this afternoon.

"It's a grade one strain of his hamstring. That can take anything from two to four weeks.

"We'll not rush him back, we'll give him all the time he needs. We've got a great medical team here looking after him.

"Obviously we'd like to get him back in amongst it as quickly as possible, but at the same time with muscle injuries you need to be careful.

"We don't want to rush him back and then it goes again. We'll make sure he's right before he comes back in.

"Brophy is definitely out for the weekend so we've got Curtis Main, Kristian Dennis and Lee Erwin available. One or two will go and lead the line for us."

Brophy has scored five goals for Saints this season but is set to be out for a few weeks

St Mirren Charitable Foundation Panda Club (11th Dec)

With the St Mirren airdome down due to inclement weather last week, the St Mirren Charitable Foundation cannot provide the pre-match football of Panda Club this weekend. However, they will still be providing Panda Club from 2:30pm-5:15pm.

The St Mirren Charitable Foundation coaches will take care of them during the game in the Tony Fitzpatrick Family Stand, the drop off and pick up will be at Drums Avenue. This is located at the south end of the stadium.

This is a pedestrian gate and is safer, quicker and much easier for both coaches and parents. You can access Drums Avenue via car, but the gate itself is pedestrian access only.

Up Next: St Mirren v Hibernian (11th Dec)

St Mirren return to the SMiSA Stadium on Saturday as we take on Hibernian in the cinch Premiership.

Jim Goodwin's side go into Saturday's match on the back of a 4-1 defeat to Aberdeen at Pittodrie, but have drawn their last two matches at the SMiSA Stadium against Ross County (0-0) and Livingston (1-1).

The Buddies are looking for three points following a run of eight without a win. Saints have drawn four and lost four of those eight fixtures.

Hibernian are managerless with ex-Saints boss Jack Ross leaving the Leith outfit following their loss at Livingston on Wednesday night.

Since their Premier Sports Cup semi-final win over Rangers last month, the Hibees have lost to Livingston (0-1), Ross County (0-1) and Rangers (0-1) in the cinch Premiership, while defeating St Johnstone (2-1) and drawing 1-1 with Motherwell.

Previous

The two sides couldn't be separated when St Mirren faced Hibernian at Easter Road in September.

Eamonn Brophy put the Buddies ahead at the interval before goals from Paul McGinn and Martin Boyle had Hibernian in front. But skipper Joe Shaughnessy scored late on to see Saints take a share of the spoils back to Paisley.

St Mirren's last win against the Hibees was in March 2017 when a Stelios Demetriou double saw Saints win 2-0 at the SMiSA Stadium.

Renfrewshire Foodbank Bucket Collection to take place on Saturday 11th December

A bucket collection will take place at this weekend's match to raise money for the Renfrewshire Foodbank.

Over the past number of years St Mirren Football Club and its supporters have supported the Renfrewshire Foodbank with collections at the SMiSA Stadium. These collections have seen St Mirren players, staff and supporters donate thousands upon thousands of meals for those most in need in Renfrewshire.

Unfortunately, due to the impact of Covid, this was not possible last season and with uncertainty over possible rule changes in the next few weeks, it has been decided that a bucket collection will take place this year to help raise funds for the Renfrewshire Foodbank. This will take place at our match against Hibernian on Saturday 11th December 2021. Please note this is a bucket collection to raise money for the Renfrewshire Foodbank. Anyone who wishes to donate food should do so directly to the Renfrewshire Foodbank.

Past experience has highlighted that after the festive period there is a fall off of donations and although the stock is sufficient enough to see the Foodbank through to the New Year, it is sad to report that demand from those most in need quickly depletes many of the items that help make up a basic food parcel. A bucket collection would see the Renfrewshire Foodbank able to help well into the next year and allow them to purchase the items that are essential to sustain families who may struggle to put food on the table.

With recent financial burdens being placed on many of the most vulnerable in our society it is more important than ever that the Renfrewshire Foodbank can provide much needed basic items and the continued support of the people of Renfrewshire will help sustain a level of service that has been maintained over the years.

Volunteers will be present at the access points to the turnstiles from 2pm onwards. They will have identifiable bibs and collection buckets.

To learn more about the Renfrewshire Foodbank and the work that they do please visit https://renfrewshire.foodbank.org.uk/

Volunteers will wear bibs and have buckets to collect money on Saturday at the match to raise funds for the Renfrewshire Foodbank.

Jim Goodwin: Stick together through difficult spell

It's a difficult situation but it's not something we shy away from. We've got to stick together and believe we are capable of coming out the other side because I certainly do."

Saints defeated in Aberdeen

St Mirren were beaten by Aberdeen as the Dons took all three points on a wet and windy day in the Granite city.

Marley Watkins and Christian Ramirez netted early goals to put the home side in control. Scott Tanser pulled one back for Saints before half-time, but Watkins scored again to restore Aberdeen's two goal advantage before half-time. Ramirez would also score his second in the second-half to secure a 4-1 win for the Dons.

Jim Goodwin made three changes from the team that drew 0-0 with Ross County on Wednesday night. Captain Joe Shaughnessy returned for suspension, while Matt Millar and Ryan Flynn also came into the side in place of Richard Tait, Kyle McAllister and Kristian Dennis.

Saints had the first big chance of the match when Eamonn Brophy sprung the offside trap to run through on goal. Aberdeen defender David Bates raced alongside the forward and made an inch perfect challenge to help turn the effort by the post.

But despite that positive start, it was the Dons who took an early lead when Marley Watkins scored on seven minutes. The striker rose the highest to meet a Funso Ojo free-kick and while his initial effort was saved by Jak Alnwick, he reacted quickest on the follow-up to fire home.

And two minutes later the home side doubled their advantage. Jay Emmanuel Thomas' effort was deflected into the path of Ramirez who scooped home from six yards out to put the Dons 2-0 in front after only nine minutes.

Saints could have pulled a goal back on 18 minutes but for Bates again coming to the Dons rescue. Jamie McGrath's cross met an unmarked Millar but the Australian's header was cleared off the line by the Aberdeen defender.

Millar was then twice foiled by Aberdeen goalkeeper Joe Lewis as the Buddies looked for a way back into the match. The stopper turned away Millar's strike after he was sent through by McGrath and then pushed away his header from the resulting corner. In between those chances Saints were forced into a substitution with Curtis Main coming on for the injured Brophy.

The Buddies would pull a goal back when Scott Tanser got on to a low Millar ball to sweep beyond Lewis three minutes before the interval. But less than 60 seconds later the Dons went 3-1 ahead when Watkins scored his second of the afternoon.

St Mirren were denied what looked like a stonewall penalty on 50 minutes when Alan Power was felled in the box. It looked clear-cut, but referee Willie Collum ignored the Saints shouts.

Alnwick made a big save just after the hour mark to keep the scoreline down when he got a strong hand to a low drive from Dons substitute Teddy Jenks. The Saints goalkeeper then made a good double stop to deny Ojo a few minutes later before denying Ryan Hedges with a great block on 69 minutes.

Aberdeen's pressure would tell and they did add a fourth on 71 minutes as Ramirez grabbed his second off the afternoon when he knocked Jenks' ball across the box home from a few yards out to seal a 4-1 win for Stephen Glass' side.
