Jim Goodwin confident Saints luck will turn

Jim Goodwin believes his side's luck will turn if they keep performing as they have done in recent matches.

The Buddies are seven without a win in the cinch Premiership and have only scored one goal in their last five matches. But the manager feels his side has created more than enough in the majority of those matches and aren't getting the results their performances merit.

And Jim hopes that luck can turn on Saturday when Saints face Aberdeen at Pittodrie.

Somebody mentioned to me that in the last half a dozen games we've had nearly 110 attempts on goal. Our goal return is nowhere near good enough.

"We find ourselves going through a bit of a barren spell at the moment, which can happen.

"But there are goals in the team and lots of creativity in the team and I’m very confident we’ll turn things around.

"Aberdeen got a good result against Livingston the other night, but they’d lost their previous three games.

"I don’t think Stephen Glass will be getting too carried away and I certainly don’t think the Aberdeen players will be expecting an easy game from us.

"We’ve been playing really well of late. We need to capitalise on that and get the goals and points those performances deserve, I think."

Saturday's match is the starts of a run of tough fixtures for Saints with Hibernian, Celtic and Rangers lying ahead in the coming weeks.

It'll be a big challenge for the Buddies, but the gaffer is relishing the tests ahead and is confident his players will be too.

We’ve got four incredibly difficult games coming up, starting with Aberdeen away.

"I don’t think any other team in and around us has got it as difficult as us in the build up to Christmas, there’s no doubt about it.

"But we’re really excited by it. We’re not afraid of the challenge at all. Sometimes it relieves the pressure a bit, because people will no doubt have us as underdogs.

"We know that those teams - Aberdeen, Hibs, Celtic and Rangers - squad-wise, strength in depth and the budget that they have were the top four teams in the country last year.

"We know how difficult it’s going to be. But we’ve already beaten Aberdeen. We drew with Hibs at Easter Road and should have won that game on the day. We gave Rangers a real good run for their money in Paisley the last time we played, so we’ll not shy away from the challenge.

"It’s what football’s all about as a manager and a player. Those are the types of big games you want to be involved in.

"The players will have no issues whatsoever in terms of raising their game for those four in particular."

Renfrewshire Foodbank Bucket Collection to take place on Saturday 11th December

Over the past number of years St Mirren Football Club and its supporters have supported the Renfrewshire Foodbank with collections at the SMiSA Stadium.

These collections have seen St Mirren players, staff and supporters donate thousands upon thousands of meals for those most in need in Renfrewshire.

Unfortunately, due to the impact of Covid, this was not possible last season and with uncertainty over possible rule changes in the next few weeks, it has been decided that a bucket collection will take place this year to help raise funds for the Renfrewshire Foodbank. This will take place at our match against Hibernian on Saturday 11th December 2021. Please note this is a bucket collection to raise money for the Renfrewshire Foodbank. Anyone who wishes to donate food should do so directly to the Renfrewshire Foodbank.

Past experience has highlighted that after the festive period there is a fall off of donations and although the stock is sufficient enough to see the Foodbank through to the New Year, it is sad to report that demand from those most in need quickly depletes many of the items that help make up a basic food parcel. A bucket collection would see the Renfrewshire Foodbank able to help well into the next year and allow them to purchase the items that are essential to sustain families who may struggle to put food on the table.

With recent financial burdens being placed on many of the most vulnerable in our society it is more important than ever that the Renfrewshire Foodbank can provide much needed basic items and the continued support of the people of Renfrewshire will help sustain a level of service that has been maintained over the years.

Volunteers will be present at the access points to the turnstiles from 2pm onwards. They will have identifiable bibs and collection buckets.

Up Next: Aberdeen v St Mirren (4th Dec)

St Mirren make the journey up the A90 on Saturday as Jim Goodwin's men face Aberdeen in the cinch Premiership.

The Buddies go into Saturday's match after a 0-0 draw with Ross County at the SMiSA Stadium on Wednesday night. That was Saints' fourth draw in their last six cinch Premiership matches - two of which have come on the road (0-0 at St Johnstone and 2-2 at Motherwell).

Aberdeen, meanwhile, defeated Livingston 2-0 at Pittodrie to leapfrog St Mirren in the league table. The Dons sit one point ahead of Jim Goodwin's side following their win over Livi. That victory ended a three match losing run for Stephen Glass' side after losses to Celtic (1-2), Dundee United (0-1) and Motherwell (0-2).

Saints came out on top when the two sides met at the SMiSA Stadium in September.

Connor Ronan gave the Buddies an early lead, but goals from Christian Ramirez and Scott Brown put the Dons ahead. But Ronan scored his second to level before ex-Aberdeen striker Curtis Main gave Jim Goodwin's men all the points.

Neither side could be separated when St Mirren last visited Pittodrie in February as the game ended 0-0.

There comes a time when you need a little bit of composure. We need to have a bit more quality in the final third."

Goalless between Buddies and County

St Mirren and Ross County played out a goalless draw at the SMiSA Stadium.

A frustrating night saw Jim Goodwin's side create plenty of opportunities throughout the 90 minutes but the Buddies couldn't find the goal to take the points.

Saints made two changes from the side that lost at Tynecastle on Saturday. Joe Shaughnessy missed out due to suspension, while Ryan Flynn dropped to the bench. In came Kyle McAllister and Kristian Dennis. Jak Alnwick took the captain's armband in Shaughnessy's absence.

County had the best of the chances in the opening 10 minutes of the match. A Blair Spittal hit from 20 yards deflected off Richard Tait and could have ended up anywhere but thankfully went over. Alnwick then made a brilliant one-handed stop to deny Dominic Samuel the opener on nine minutes. Charles Dunne misjudged the flight of the ball with the County forward racing on to it. He shaped for the shot on the edge of the box with the strike turned round the post by the strong hand of the Saints goalkeeper.

Chances were at a premium in the opening 45 minutes with Eamonn Brophy having the best chance of the first-half for the Buddies. The striker - looking for his first Saints goal at the SMiSA Stadium - latched on to a through ball from Alan Power, but had his goalbound effort blocked by Jake Vokins. It wasn't quite on the goal-line but it wasn't far away from it.

Dennis had two big opportunities early in the second-half. The first, on 52 minutes, saw the English forward head Connor Ronan's cross inches by the right-hand post. Four minutes later the ball fell invitingly for the striker but he couldn't force home from close range.

It was all Saints in the first 20 minutes of the second 45 with Ronan forcing a good save from Maynard-Brewer before the County 'keeper somehow kept out a header that deflected off Dennis.

Jim Goodwin reacted by making two changes with Eamonn Brophy and Connor Ronan making way for Curtis Main and Greg Kiltie. And the latter almost made an instant impact with his powerful strike from 20 yards turned over the bar by Maynard-Brewer. Main also had a great opportunity with less than 10 minutes remaining after he was sent clear on goal by Dennis. The striker beat the County goalkeeper but had his effort cleared off the line by ex-Saint Keith Watson.

Ross County had a great chance to steal the points with only two minutes of normal time on the clock. But Alnwick made two great stops to deny Spittal and David Cancola as the game finished stalemate.

Jim Goodwin: Plenty of options available if needed

Jim Goodwin is confident his side can cope with the loss of key personnel ahead of tonight's cinch Premiership clash against Ross County.

Saints will be without captain Joe Shaughnessy after his sending off against Hearts on Saturday, while Conor McCarthy is on the sidelines after a ligament injury. Scott Tanser also faced a late fitness test after being replaced in the first-half at Tynecastle.

But the manager believes he has enough in reserve from which to call upon.

Joe’s sending off so late in the game was a sore one to take, but at the same time we just have to learn to cope with it.

"I thought we coped relatively well with the loss of Conor McCarthy at the weekend against Hearts. Charles Dunne came in and was excellent for large spells of the game.

"That shows the kind of strength in depth we have in the squad. I’m very fortunate to have such good options coming off the bench

"I’ve got plenty of options to cope with it if I need to shuffle the pack."

Saints head into the match without a win since a 3-2 victory against tonight's opponents back in October.

It's a run of six without a win, but Jim has been feels like the team will soon reap the rewards their performances merit.

"I genuinely feel that someone is going to get a doing from us at some point.

"I saw Ross County hammering Dundee 5-0 two or three weeks ago and I believe that someone is going to be on the tail end of one of them from us and the sooner the better.

"However, I’d be more concerned if we weren’t playing well and creating chances.

"I’d be asking serious questions of the players and myself.

"You want to absolutely open the gap above the bottom teams but more importantly we want to close the one on the teams above us.”

Visitor Information

  • Electronic Ticketing System

At the SMiSA Stadium we have an electronic ticketing system in place at the turnstiles.

The process of using the system is fairly straight-forward and easy to use:

    • On entering the turnstile you will see the ticket reader.
    • Place your match ticket (with the barcode or QR code facing upwards) or smartcard – into the aperture
    • Once the ticket/smartcard is accepted into the system the green light will illuminate and an audio alert will sound after which you should hear the turnstile being unlocked
    • Push the turnstile gate and enter the stadium as you normally would.

The whole process will only take a few seconds.

Please note that there will be stewards in attendance to help where required.

  • Street Parking on Matchday

The Club has been made aware of problems occasioned by inconsiderate parking in the area of Tannahill Road.

Seemingly supporters are parking despite the presence of double yellow lines and as a consequence local bus routes are also being blocked because streets in this area are narrow and fans are parking on both sides. People, many of whom are elderly, are having to walk from Greenhill Road to their homes because buses can’t get access.

Residents who have cars parked in driveways are experiencing similar difficulties getting their vehicles in and out. On being approached by local residents some supporters have been somewhat aggressive which could lead to confrontation.

St Mirren Football Club strives to be a good neighbour and we would ask that ALL supporters attending the stadium not only park in accordance with local parking restrictions but also give consideration to the needs of local residents by parking sensibly so as not to occasion an unnecessary obstruction.

  • Picking Up & Dropping Off by Car on Match Day

We are also aware of problems with patrons parking at the front of the Main Stand to pick up disabled supporters at the end of the game. This area is a 'no parking' zone on match days (with cones on the road) and has to be kept clear for emergency access. It is an inappropriate location for disabled spectator uplifts, as not only does it cause an obstruction on the road, it also causes a danger to pedestrians leaving the stadium.

Please note that the designated pick-up/drop off points are either in Drums Avenue or the two lay-byes on Ferguslie Park Avenue.

  • Finding the SMiSA Stadium

Follow this road and after a sharp right hand bend you should now be in Greenock Road. Then take your first right on to Clark Street and drive to the end of the street which is the junction with Greenhill Road, turn left and you will see the stadium on the opposite side of the road.

From there you can get train to Paisley St James or if you prefer to walk the following routes are advised by the police:
