Reaction: Jim Goodwin Post-Hamilton Academical

Saints boss Jim Goodwin reacts to St Mirren's 1-1 draw with Hamilton Academical in the Ladbrokes Premiership.

Match Preview: St Mirren v Hamilton (5th Feb)

St Mirren play host to Hamilton Academical on match day 25 of the Ladbrokes Premiership.

FORM

St Mirren - DDLWWL

Hamilton - LLLWWL

The Buddies come into tonight's match on the back of draws with Hibernian and Aberdeen over the last 10 days.

Saints side picked up a point at Easter Road following a 2-2 draw with Jack Ross' Hibernian on Saturday. Conor McCarthy and Tony Andreu had the Buddies 2-0 ahead inside the opening 20 minutes, but goals from Scott Allan and Christian Doidge before half-time meant Saints had to settle for just a point.

That point came off the back of a 0-0 draw with Aberdeen at the Simple Digital Arena on Sunday 25th January.

St Mirren have only lost two of their last nine matches in all competitions - a 1-0 defeat at Ibrox two weeks ago today and a 2-1 loss to league leaders Celtic on Boxing Day.

Hamilton have lost their last three league matches, losing to Celtic on Sunday (1-4) whilst there were also defeats at home to Livingston (2-4) and an away loss against Hibernian (1-2).

Both sides' last league win came on 29th December 2019 when Saints defeated Kilmarnock 1-0 at the Simple Digital Arena while Accies defeated Motherwell 2-1 at Fir Park in the Lanarkshire derby.

PREVIOUS

St Mirren are unbeaten in their last four against Hamilton Accies having won two and drawn two of their last four league meetings.

The Buddies were 1-0 winners at the Foys Stadium in December with Cammy MacPherson's first goal of the season giving Saints their first away win of the season and their first win at Hamilton since 2012.

Saints were held to a 0-0 draw in Paisley earlier in the season despite Accies being reduced to 10 men when George Oakley was given his marching orders.

Hamilton's last win over Saints was at the Simple Digital Arena in December 2018 as they won 3-1 thanks to goals from Dougie Imrie, Ziggy Gordon and James Keatings.

TEAM NEWS

Seifedin Chabbi could make his St Mirren debut after signing for the Saints on deadline day.

Gary MacKenzie, Kyle Magennis and Stephen McGinn remain out for St Mirren.

Jamie Hamilton will miss out for the visitors after picking up a red card in their loss to Celtic.

MANAGER'S THOUGHTS

"I think it's the most significant game we've had for a long time. It's an out-and-out six pointer.

"If we go and win it we open up a six point gap over Hamilton. If they win it's game on again as they level up with us on points.

"There's no need for me to remind the players or anyone else how important this game is.

"It's going to be one of those occasions where you are going to have roll your sleeves up and get stuck in and I have certainly got players in my ranks that are more than capable of doing that."

Visitor Information

  • Electronic Ticketing System

At the SMiSA Stadium we have an electronic ticketing system in place at the turnstiles.

The process of using the system is fairly straight-forward and easy to use:

    • On entering the turnstile you will see the ticket reader.
    • Place your match ticket (with the barcode or QR code facing upwards) or smartcard – into the aperture
    • Once the ticket/smartcard is accepted into the system the green light will illuminate and an audio alert will sound after which you should hear the turnstile being unlocked
    • Push the turnstile gate and enter the stadium as you normally would.

The whole process will only take a few seconds.

Please note that there will be stewards in attendance to help where required.

  • Street Parking on Matchday

The Club has been made aware of problems occasioned by inconsiderate parking in the area of Tannahill Road.

Seemingly supporters are parking despite the presence of double yellow lines and as a consequence local bus routes are also being blocked because streets in this area are narrow and fans are parking on both sides. People, many of whom are elderly, are having to walk from Greenhill Road to their homes because buses can’t get access.

Residents who have cars parked in driveways are experiencing similar difficulties getting their vehicles in and out. On being approached by local residents some supporters have been somewhat aggressive which could lead to confrontation.

St Mirren Football Club strives to be a good neighbour and we would ask that ALL supporters attending the stadium not only park in accordance with local parking restrictions but also give consideration to the needs of local residents by parking sensibly so as not to occasion an unnecessary obstruction.

  • Picking Up & Dropping Off by Car on Match Day

We are also aware of problems with patrons parking at the front of the Main Stand to pick up disabled supporters at the end of the game. This area is a 'no parking' zone on match days (with cones on the road) and has to be kept clear for emergency access. It is an inappropriate location for disabled spectator uplifts, as not only does it cause an obstruction on the road, it also causes a danger to pedestrians leaving the stadium.

Please note that the designated pick-up/drop off points are either in Drums Avenue or the two lay-byes on Ferguslie Park Avenue.

  • Finding the SMiSA Stadium

From there you can get train to Paisley St James or if you prefer to walk the following routes are advised by the police:

Match Report: Hibernian 2-2 St Mirren

Saints had to settle for a point after Hibernian battled back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at Easter Road.

Two goals in four minutes from Conor McCarthy and Tony Andreu had St Mirren deservedly ahead inside the first 20 minutes.

But Hibernian hit back before half-time thanks to goals from Scott Allan and in-form Christian Doidge.

The Buddies started strongly in the capital and earned their reward on 14 minutes when McCarthy scored his first St Mirren goal to put Saints ahead. The Irish defender was presented with a free header inside the Hibees box to bullet home from a Cammy MacPherson corner kick.

Saints were worthy of their lead but the home side looked to respond quickly with Martin Boyle forcing Vaclav Hladky into a decent stop at his near post on 17 minutes.

But just a minute later Saints doubled their lead. McCarthy send a terrific cross-field pass to Ilkay Durmus who brought the ball down well and raced away from David Gray to make his way into the Hibernian box. The winger laid the ball back to Tony Andreu with the Frenchman sliding home to make it 2-0.

Hibernian pulled a goal back on 25 minutes through Scott Allan. The midfielder drove forward into the Saints half before switching wide to Boyle on the right side. Allan continued his run into the box to meet Boyle low ball across to stroke home.

The Buddies were still looking strong with Durmus firing over from range on the half-hour mark, while Hibs goalkeeper Ofir Marciano had to be alert to push away a MacPherson free-kick and a low ball in from Morias. Andreu shot over after the latter's opportunity fell to him on the edge of the area.

Frustratingly, Hibernian found a leveller just two minutes before the interval. Saints couldn't clear their lines allowing Stephane Omeonga to flight the ball into Doidge who headed beyond Hladky from close range.

St Mirren could have gotten the second-half off to the perfect start when, just six minutes in, Marciano spilled a Durmus cross into the feet of Andreu but the Frenchman couldn't get the shot away with the Hibernian goalkeeper managing to gather.

Jim Goodwin made a double substitution on 64 minutes when Jamie McGrath & Alex Jakubiak came on in place of Andreu & Morias. It came just seconds after Morias had nodded agonisingly wide from a MacPherson free-kick.

Hibernian substitution Paul McGinn, who yesterday completed his move from Saints to the Hibees, almost came back to haunt the Buddies on 70 minutes when he rose the highest to head a free-kick goal-ward with Hladky doing well to push wide.

Hibernian were almost gifted a goal with 15 minutes remaining when Sam Foley's attempted header to Hladky was pounced upon first by Boyle, but the Saints defence did well to get back and deflect the forward's effort wide.

Three minutes later Allan almost grabbed his second directly from a corner. The midfielder's ball in from the left looped over Hladky but crashed off the Saints bar.

That was the closest either side would come in the final stages of the match with Saints taking a point back to Paisley.
