Jon Obika and Danny Mullen off the mark

Jon Obika and Danny Mullen were on the scoresheet as their goals gave St Mirren a 2-0 win over St Johnstone at the Simple Digital Arena on Saturday.

The forwards notched their first league goals of the season, with Jon grabbing his first in the Black and White of Saints, to give the Saints an important three points and a first league win since August.

Much has been made of the Buddies lack of goals, with Jim Goodwin's side heading into Saturday's match as lowest scorers in the league.

But now both are off the mark, they believe it's time to use Saturday's win as a springboard moving forward.

"This will be the benchmark now," Jon told stmirren.com post-match.

"I feel, especially the forwards, we kind of owe it to the boys because we have been defensively fantastic.

"It's feels good to score and also get the three points which is the main thing. That's what you play for - to help your team and get those goals."

Danny echoed Jon's sentiments saying: "It’s always good to get a goal especially after the start we’ve had.

"We didn’t start great but we came into the game and when we went ahead we managed the game well and saw it out professionally.

"Overall it was a good day. We’ve scored two goals and we’ll look to keep that up when we go to Kilmarnock."

Obika's opener was a thing of beauty as the English striker acrobatically put Saints in front with an overhead kick on 37 minutes.

"I just felt it stayed in the air for long and I'm just glad I connected with it," he said.

"In training we always practice finishing and the boys had been on fire this week. Again that is the benchmark and we always have to go out and attack."

Both Danny and captain Stephen McGinn, who made his return to the side following an injury to Ryan Flynn, admitted they were happy for Jon to get off the mark, with McGinn praising the quality of both goals and the team's overall performance.

"Jon scored a fantastic goal," the skipper said.

"I'm delighted for him - I thought he was unplayable.

"When we got our noses in front I thought we looked like a really good side.

"I thought the two goals were brilliant," he continued. "Kirk [Broadfoot] does great for Jon and then it's all about the big man's athleticism.

"The second goal is something we work on all the time. Sometimes in training it feels a bit false but when you get it right you can see how good it can work."

Reaction: Jim Goodwin Post-St Johnstone

A delighted Jim Goodwin gives his reaction to the Buddies 2-0 win over St Johnstone at the Simple Digital Arena this afternoon.

Match Report: St Mirren 2-0 St Johnstone

St Mirren ended the long wait for a goal and the even longer wait for a victory with a win against St Johnstone at the Simple Digital Arena.

The Buddies produced two goals of real quality to end the drought that stretched more than three games. The first was just before the break when Jon Obika opened his St Mirren account with a cracking overhead kick.

That was a fine individual goal, the second was a tremendous sweeping move. Kirk Broadfoot played the ball out wide to Paul McGinn and the fullback whipped in a great cross that was thumped into the top corner by Danny Mullen. There was still half an hour to go but after that setback the Saintees rarely looked like producing a comeback.

Paul wasn't the only McGinn in the home line-up as brother and skipper Stephen made his first appearance since the Betfred Cup group game against East Kilbride three months ago. He replaced Ryan Flynn, who missed out with an Achilles' injury, with Tony Andreu coming in for Ilkay Durmus. Stevie May led the St Johnstone attack with Matty Kennedy and Drey Wright offering support.

The opening stages weren't great despite Murray Davidson firing an early rasping shot wide. A rare piece of neat passing play allowed Anthony Ralston to get a shot in with Stephen McGinn in the right place to clear it. Jason Holt then looped a shot onto the roof of the net before there was a minute's applause to pay tribute to Buddies fan Steven Ingram, who recently passed away. Soon after that ended the visitors almost took the lead, Danny Swanson seeing his initial shot blocked by Broadfoot but the ball fell kindly for Kennedy, who should have done better than shoot wide.

The home Saints had posed little attacking threat but had a penalty shout turned down when Mullen was kicked in the head by a flying boot. It seemed to spur the home side on, goalie Zander Clark having to be alert to tip away Kyle Magennis' corner, before the goal drought finally came to an end. With the Saintees defence rather hesitant to mop up after a free-kick, Broadfoot headed the back back across goal for Obika to thunder a spectacular overhead kick past Clark that was in the net before he'd even seen it. Not a bad way to bag your first goal in the stripes! The visitors tried to respond before the interval, Vaclav Hladky doing well to parry Ralston's shot.

Andreu was denied by Clark just after the break as the Buddies looked to double their advantage before Mullen went agonisingly close to doing just that. Obika's tremendous flick-on found his strike partner and he lifted the ball past the hesitant Clark but was relieved to see it hit the far post and bounced to safety.

St Johnstone had done little after the break but had a decent penalty shout turned down when Kennedy went down at the end of a mazy dribble. It was a rare foray forward and the home Saints made their pressure pay soon after in fantastic style.

It soon got even harder as St Mirren bagged a tremendous second. Broadfoot fed the ball out wide to Paul McGinn and he delivered a delicious first time cross that was emphatically tucked away by Mullen for his first goal of the season.

It was the striker's last involvement as his afternoon was then cut short by injury, Junior Morias replacing him. May failed to trouble Hladky with a couple of efforts as the Perth Saints tried to reduce the deficit before Morias went close to adding a third, leaving two defenders on their backsides before shooting straight at Clark. Another chance came when Obika slipped Foley in behind the visiting defence but he tried to square to Andreu rather than go himself and played the ball behind his team-mate. It didn't prove costly, Kennedy shooting over from miles out in stoppage time pretty much summing up how the second half had gone for the visitors.

Match Preview: St Mirren v St Johnstone (19th Oct)

Saints are back in action following the international break as we host St Johnstone at the Simple Digital Arena tomorrow.

FORM

St Mirren currently occupy 11th place - one point above tomorrow's opponents.

The Buddies have picked up five points from the opening eight league matches after a 1-0 win over Aberdeen in August and 0-0 draws with both Hamilton and Hearts.

Jim Goodwin's side come into tomorrow's match on the back of a 2-0 loss away to Motherwell before the international break.

St Johnstone sit bottom of the table having yet to win a league match this season.

Tommy Wright's side have drawn four of their eight league matches, picking up their points against Livingston (2-2), Hibernian (2-2), Aberdeen (1-1) and Ross County (2-2).

Three of their four points have come on the road, with the Perth Saints having only lost one of four away league matches this season - a 7-0 defeat at Celtic Park on the opening day of the season.

PREVIOUS

St Mirren and St Johnstone squared off four times last season with the Perth Saints winning three of the four meetings.

There were two wins at McDiarmid Park for St Johnstone (2-0, 1-0) and a win in Paisley on Boxing Day 2018 (1-0).

Danny Mullen's last minute volley sealed at point at the Simple Digital Arena in a 1-1 draw the last time the two teams faced each other.

St Mirren's last home win against St Johnstone came in 2013 as the Buddies came out on top in a seven-goal thriller.

TEAM NEWS

Cody Cooke is back in training for the Buddies, but tomorrow's match comes too soon for the English striker.

Kyle McAllister remains out with a back injury that forced him to miss the match against Motherwell before the international break.

MANAGER'S THOUGHTS

"It's going to be a really difficult game against St Johnstone who are a good side and it's a really important game for us.

"Tommy Wright's teams are renowned for their organisation and their hard work and I expect nothing different at the weekend.

"I watched a few of their games back last week. Although they lost 1-0 at home to Motherwell recently I thought they deserved to win the game. They created more opportunities, had more shots on target and created the more clear cut chances on the day.

"I certainly believe there are things we can exploit in the St Johnstone defence but I think we need to be very wary of them in an attacking perspective as well. They have some really good attacking players, some very dangerous players and they've got good pace in the team as well.

"We will have to be as organised and as switched on as we have been defensively at home, but hopefully we can exploit the weaknesses that we think are there and use that to our advantage at the weekend."

Cammy MacPherson extends deal till 2022

St Mirren Football Club is delighted to announce that Cammy MacPherson has signed a two-year extension to his contract that sees him tied to the club until summer 2022.

The St Mirren Academy graduate made his Saints debut at the age of 18 as a substitute in a 2-0 away win against Dundee in the Scottish Cup in January 2017.

The 20 year-old has gone on to make 28 appearances for the Buddies and scored his first goal for the club in a 2-1 defeat at home to Aberdeen in December 2018.

Speaking on the new deal, Cammy said: "I'm really happy and to get it done now I couldn’t be any happier.

"I want to get into the team and if I can get into the team I want to be able to keep myself there and become a mainstay.

"I feel like I have matured a lot and grown a lot since I made my debut. I’m much more used to the demands of first team football."

St Mirren manager Jim Goodwin said he was "delighted" to have Cammy signed up to an extended contract.

"Cammy is a player who has come on leaps and bounds," he told stmirren.com.

"We were humming and hawing during the summer about whether we should send Cammy out on loan but he really impressed us with his attitude and how he trains.

"He’s a great kid," he continued. "He does things in the right manner and is a very good professional. We are delighted to have extended his contract.

"He’s a big part of what we are trying to do here. He’s got great energy, really good fitness levels, fantastic technically and has a little bit of aggression."
