St Mirren Football Club can confirm that Charles Dunne has returned to the club on a short-term contract subject to clearance.
The 31-year-old defender returns on a deal until January as cover following an injury to Alex Iacovitti.
After a three-year stay at St Mirren, Charles departed the club in the summer following the expiry of his contract. During his initial spell, Charles made 91 appearances for the Saints and was part of the side that achieved two consecutive top six finishes and qualified for Europe last season.
Speaking to stmirren.com, manager Stephen Robinson said: "We needed cover and Charles has been training with us coincidentally for five to six weeks now because a move he was expecting abroad has fallen through.
"It works for both parties on a short-term basis. We get a very experienced SPFL player that we know can come in and hit the ground running. He's very familiar with everything we do and is a fantastic character around the place.
We’re delighted to have him on board again. He was the best that we could get and we’re lucky that he was still available in our situation.
"Alex Iacovitti is injured until Christmas and Richard Taylor has an ongoing problem with his hernia. We felt we had no cover on the left-hand side. Young Luke Kenny is right-footed and putting him in that area wouldn't be the right thing to do.
"Everyone was trying to put two and two together because he was training with us but there was no intention from either party. But we got the injuries and he became the perfect solution for us on a short-term basis."
Saints host Hearts at The SMiSA Stadium on Saturday in a rearranged William Hill Premiership fixture.
The match was originally due to take place on Wednesday 4th December, but with both teams exiting the Premier Sports Cup, it was agreed to pull the fixture forward.
The Buddies were held to a 2-2 draw against Kilmarnock in Paisley last weekend. Goals from Toyosi Olusanya and Mark O'Hara had us 2-1 ahead at the interval, but an own goal from Jonah Ayunga saw the visitors take a point.
Stephen Robinson's men sit in seventh place in the William Hill Premiership with five points from our opening five matches.

Saturday's visitors sit at the foot of the league table having taken just one point from their first five.
An opening day 0-0 draw with Rangers at Tynecastle, coupled with a good performance, saw Hearts start the season in a positive fashion. But Stephen Naismith's men have since lost seven on the bounce in all competitions.
Amongst those seven defeats have been three losses away from home in the league to Celtic (0-2), Motherwell (1-3) and Dundee (1-3), while there was also a 1-0 defeat to Dundee United at Tynecastle.
The previous meeting between Saints and Hearts came at The SMiSA Stadium in May in what was our final home match of the 2023/24 season. Goals from James Scott and James Bolton twice saw Saints ahead but equalisers from Kyosuke Tagawa and Lawrence Shankland saw the points shared in a 2-2 draw.

St Mirren Football Club would like to thank supporters for donating to the Renfrewshire Foodbank collection at The SMiSA Stadium on Saturday.
Supporters donated 38 full crates of food - enough for 981 meals to families and those most in need in Renfrewshire. A bucket collection also raised £1,189.76 in cash that will be used by the Foodbank to purchase essential items.
Renfrewshire Foodbank offers support to anyone at a time of crisis in Renfrewshire. They offer three day balanced nutritious food parcels to individuals and families who are in need. The service is deemed to be a short term service where they would look to support people through referral networks to get back on their feet and be better able to self manage their own situation.
Renfrewshire Foodbank also have a Financial Inclusion team who can work with people to try and maximise their income as well as a Fuel Poverty project to tackle fuel insecurities.
Part of The Trussell Trust’s network of foodbanks, Renfrewshire Foodbank distributed 123 tonnes of food to people in crisis in 2022.

It was a share of the spoils for St Mirren after a 2-2 draw with Kilmarnock at The SMiSA Stadium.
First-half goals from Toyosi Olusanya and Mark O'Hara had Saints 2-1 ahead at the interval, but a Marley Watkins goal with 20 minutes to go saw the visitors pick up a point in Paisley. There was late VAR drama with James Scott having a goal disallowed in added time as Saints had to settle for a point.
Kilmarnock made a quick start with Richard Taylor having to turn a low cross wide inside the first 30 seconds, while Daniel Armstrong curled an effort over the bar from 20 yards on two minutes.
But it was Saints who took the lead when Olusanya netted his fifth goal of the season. The forward was on hand to glance home Brown's terrific delivery in from the left to make it three goals in his last four William Hill Premiership matches.
The lead didn't last though with the visitors levelling just four minutes later. A low corner found Armstrong in space and his deflected strike was turned in by Watkins. A VAR check followed for a potential offside but the forward was found to be onside and the goal stood.
There was a bit of needle in the game in the early goings and that saw Mikael Mandron pick up the first booking on 16 minutes. The forward was then spoken to by the referee for another foul two minutes later and that prompted manager Stephen Robinson to make an early change with Jonah Ayunga replacing the striker on 20 minutes.
Roland Idowu almost scored a brilliant solo goal just after the half-hour mark when his mazy run saw him work his way into the area, but his eventual shot was blocked.
Referee Matthew MacDermid was called to the monitor with five minutes of the first-half remaining after Shaun Rooney's shot came off the arm of Joe Wright. The whistler pointed to the spot after the check and captain O'Hara sent his namesake the wrong way to put Saints back in front.
The VAR drama wasn't over though with MacDermid called over to the screen in added time at the end of the half with Rooney and Wright involved again. This time the Kilmarnock defender appeared to strike the Buddies full-back as they awaited a Killie corner. The referee showed Wright a straight red for violent conduct and the visitors were reduced to 10 men.
The Buddies were forced into a change at the half-time interval with Olusanya unable to continue after a thigh injury. He was replaced by James Scott and the forward nodded into the net early after the restart, but the ball had gone out before Rooney had managed to swing it back into the area.
Kilmarnock drew level with 20 minutes remaining when Watkins got his and the visitors' second of the game. The forward was first to a Kennedy corner and he nodded beyond Ellery Balcombe to equalise. The goal prompted the final changes for the Buddies with Kevin Van Veen on for his St Mirren debut in place of Idowu, while Caolan Boyd-Munce made way for Dennis Adeniran.
Alex Gogic was agonisingly close with a header on 81 minutes that came off the post while Adeniran dragged a low shot wide from 20 yards as the game headed to its end.
Saints thought they'd won it at the death when Scott prodded home from close range. O'Hara's corner met Gogic whose header was forced on by Ayunga and it fell to Scott who knocked into the net. But the joy was short-lived when the referee was called to the VAR monitor for the third time in the game and ruled it out for a foul by Marcus Fraser on David Watson.

The Club has been made aware of problems occasioned by inconsiderate parking in the area of Tannahill Road.
Seemingly supporters are parking despite the presence of double yellow lines and as a consequence local bus routes are also being blocked because streets in this area are narrow and fans are parking on both sides. People, many of whom are elderly, are having to walk from Greenhill Road to their homes because buses can’t get access.
Residents who have cars parked in driveways are experiencing similar difficulties getting their vehicles in and out. On being approached by local residents some supporters have been somewhat aggressive which could lead to confrontation.
St Mirren Football Club strives to be a good neighbour and we would ask that ALL supporters attending the stadium not only park in accordance with local parking restrictions but also give consideration to the needs of local residents by parking sensibly so as not to occasion an unnecessary obstruction.
We are also aware of problems with patrons parking at the front of the Main Stand to pick up disabled supporters at the end of the game. This area is a 'no parking' zone on match days (with cones on the road) and has to be kept clear for emergency access. It is an inappropriate location for disabled spectator uplifts, as not only does it cause an obstruction on the road, it also causes a danger to pedestrians leaving the stadium.
Please note that the designated pick-up/drop off points are either in Drums Avenue or the two lay-byes on Ferguslie Park Avenue.
BY ROAD
Follow signs for Paisley & Glasgow Airport. Exit the M8 at Junction 29 (St James’ Interchange) which is just after Glasgow Airport turn off if travelling east to west. Be careful not to exit on to the A737 which is signposted for Irvine. It is best to stay in the middle lane when passing the Airport as this leads naturally to the St James’ Interchange exit.
At the interchange take the first left onto a dual carriageway with some football parks on the left hand side. Follow this road and after a sharp right hand bend you should now be in Greenock Road. Then take your first right on to Clark Street and drive to the end of the street which is the junction with Greenhill Road, turn left and you will see the stadium on the opposite side of the road.
BY RAIL
Get train from Paisley Gilmour Street to Paisley St James – exit from the station is straight onto Greenhill Road where the stadium is facing you. To plan your journey by rail with Scotrail please click HERE.
BY BUS
Most buses will stop at Paisley Cross or Mill Street, from both you will see the Paisley Town Hall. From the Town Hall cross the High Street towards the Piazza Shopping Centre, when acoss walk towards the town centre until you come to Gilmour Street. Turn right on to Gilmour Street and walk towards the railway station which is about 150 yards away. From there you can get train to Paisley St James or if you prefer to walk the following routes are advised by the police:
Home fans: cross road to the left on to St James Street – follow through up Underwood Road then turn right at Greenhill Road where stadium is 200 yards further along the road. Access to the Main Stand is from Greenhill Road and the South and West Stands will be accessed from Drums Avenue.
Away fans: cross road to Love Street continue up the street till you come to Albion Street where you will turn left. Follow Albion Street until you come to the junction with Greenock Road where you will turn right. Cross the road then walk about 200 yards before taking your first left on to Clark Street. Walk straight up Clark Street to the end of the street which is the junction with Greenhill Road, turn left and you will see the the stadium on the opposite side of the road. Access to the North Stand will be from Ferguslie Park Avenue.
Men's first-team goalkeepers Ellery Balcombe and Peter Urminsky, as well as St Mirren Womens' Zoe Richard-Campbell, Skye Monaghan and Nikki Lavery visited St Mary's Primary and West Primary in Paisley in the first community schools initiative of the new season.
In conjunction with Nil By Mouth, pupils received a day of coaching from our Street Stuff coaches before having the chance to ask the players questions and receive autographs.
Lucky pupils from the schools will receive tickets for Saturday's match at home to Kilmarnock and we look forward to welcoming them to The SMiSA Stadium.
Our William Hill Premiership match at home to Rangers on Boxing Day will now kick-off at 5:45pm after being selected for broadcast on Premier Sports.

Kilmarnock are winless from their opening four William Hill Premiership matches this season.
Derek McInnes' side picked up their only point so far in their last match before the international break with a Bruce Anderson injury time penalty seeing Killie draw 1-1 with Hibernian. The Ayrshire side saw defeats to Celtic (0-4), St Johnstone (0-3) and Aberdeen (0-2) in their first three league matches of the season.
Killie reached the play-off round of the UEFA Conference League, but lost 3-1 on aggregate to Danish side Copenhagen.
Saints' last league victory against Kilmarnock was in February 2021 when goals from Kyle McAllister and Jon Obika saw the Buddies win 2-0 in Paisley.
Matthew MacDermid is the referee on Saturday and he'll be assisted by Dougie Potter and Scott Anderson.
