Oran Kearney gives his thoughts on this afternoon's loss away to Hamilton.

Match Report: Hamilton 3-0 St Mirren

St Mirren suffered a disappointing loss away to Hamilton as The Buddies were defeated 3-0 at The Hope CBD Stadium this afternoon.

Two goals in four first half minutes from Fredrik Brustad and Mickel Miller gave Accies a comfortable lead heading into the break. Miller put the seal on a good day for the home side with a tremendous effort on 66 minutes.

It was a frustrating afternoon for Saints from the outset with Jack Baird picking up a calf knock in the warm up that saw him have to be replaced in the starting eleven by Cammy MacPherson.

The home side started the brighter of the sides winning a few early corners. It was from one of these corners that Accies would have felt they should have taken an early lead. With just 10 minutes on the clock Dougie Imrie found Shaun Want in acres of space inside the box, but the Hamilton defender chested towards goal when he should have nodded home which allowed Craig Samson to tip over the bar.

Despite that early scare though Saints would go on to have their best spell of the match. Cammy Smith won a free kick in a promising position after being fouled by Darian MacKinnon. MacPherson, who agreed new contract with The Buddies yesterday, stepped up and went mightily close as he curled it just by the right-hand post.

Accies had to be alert on a few occasions with vital blocks denying Ryan Flynn and Danny Mullen just a few moments apart. The experience of Hamilton defender Matthew Kilgallon showed as he made a great challenge to stop Mullen who was breaking clear on goal.

Saints won another free kick in a good area but this time MacPherson sent it straight into the arms of Gary Woods.

It wasn't a match of the highest quality and real clear cut chances for either side were few and far between in the opening half hour, but Accies began to take a grip of the contest. On 35 minutes, Mickel Miller drove a powerful effort from distance that flew just by the post.

The warning sign was there and a minute later the hosts would take the lead. A quick counter saw the ball played out to Steven Boyd who bore down on goal. He looked certain to slam home only for Samson to make a really good stop. But Norwegian striker Frederik Brustad was on hand to knock home the rebound.

It was another blow for Saints, who also lost Hayden Coulson to injury a few minutes before with the Englishman replaced by Jordan Kirkpatrick.

Kirkpatrick, making his first appearance since an injury picked up at Rugby Park in July, conceded a penalty just four minutes later after bringing down Dougie Imrie inside the box. There was no arguing with the decision as Miller stepped up to slam home and double Accies' advantage.

The two goals in quick succession really seemed to take the wind out of Saints' sail and they couldn't get going in the second half. Hamilton looked the most likely to make anything happen and they indeed stretched their lead further on 66 minutes. It was a quality strike from Miller it has to be said with the forward smashing into the net via both posts from 25 yards out.

And so that capped off a frustrating afternoon for St Mirren who face Neil Lennon's Hibernian at The Simple Digital Arena next Saturday.

Match Preview: Hamilton v St Mirren

IT'S a trip to the HOPE CBD Stadium for St Mirren this afternoon as we face Hamilton in Oran Kearney’s first away trip as Saints boss.

The Northern Irishman, named as Buddies gaffer two weeks ago, took charge of St Mirren for the first time last week when Premiership champions Celtic came to The Simple Digital Arena. The Buddies impressed as they picked up a point with a 0-0 draw with Cammy Smith, Ryan Flynn and Lee Hodson all going close in a strong first half performance.

That result arrested a slide of four losses in a row for Saints having lost to Rangers, Livingston and Hearts in the Premiership and Aberdeen in the Betfred Cup.

A point against Celtic was enough to see Saints climb above Hamilton in the Premiership table to sit in 10th place with four points. Accies have picked up three points from their opening five matches after one win and four losses. Martin Canning’s side have lost to Hearts, Celtic, St Johnstone and Livingston but defeated Lanarkshire rivals Motherwell at Fir Park in August.

Beyond the Hearts defeat on the opening day, there has only been one goal of a difference in each of Accies’ last four matches. After their 1-0 win over Motherwell, Hamilton were edged out 1-0 by Celtic at Celtic Park and 2-1 at home against St Johnstone before losing 1-0 away to Livingston last weekend.

Today’s match will be the first meeting between the two sides in over two years when they were paired in Group G of the Betfred Cup in the 2016/17 season. Hamilton were emphatic winners that afternoon with Ali Crawford opening the scoring before ex-Saints Dougie Imrie and Massimo Donati completed a comfortable win for Accies.

Crawford was on the scoresheet again when Saints last paid a visit to The Hope CBD Stadium in league action - this time on the final day of the 2014/15 season. His 83rd minute goal consigned The Buddies to a 1-0 loss as we dropped out of the Premiership.

Given both sides' start to the season - and the fact there has only been one goal or less scored in six of the last nine meetings between the two - it's likely to be a tight affair. A first win for Oran Kearney could see Saints climb up to seventh in the table and move four points clear of Hamilton in 11th. A victory for the home side would see The Buddies fall two points behind Accies and drop into the relegation play-off spot.

Cammy MacPherson signs contract extension

St Mirren Football Club is delighted to announce that Cameron MacPherson has signed a contract extension that sees him tied to the club until summer 2020 with the option for a further year.

The St Mirren Academy graduate made his Saints debut at the age of 18 as a substitute in a 2-0 win away to Dundee in the Scottish Cup back in January 2017.

MacPherson has made 11 appearances for The Buddies and came off the bench last week in our 0-0 draw with Celtic.

The midfielder has also featured for the St Mirren Colts in both their IRN-BRU Cup ties this season - scoring in wins over Kilmarnock and Hamilton.

Speaking on the new deal, Cammy said: "I'm buzzing to get it done. I've known about it for a while but now it's finally done I can focus on my football.

"I'm really enjoying my football especially with the new gaffer coming in.

"I feel I've come on really well especially because I've played a few games and been about the first team.

"I think I'm a better player and hopefully in the next year or two I can make myself a permanent part of the first team."

Gus MacPherson joins as Technical Director

St Mirren Football Club can confirm that Gus MacPherson has re-joined the club as our new Technical Director.

Gus first joined Saints in 2003 as player/assistant manager before taking over as manager later that year following John Coughlin’s departure.

Gus was in charge of The Buddies for over six years – leading Saints to promotion in 2006.

St Mirren chairman Gordon Scott said: "Over the past few months we have learned lessons regarding the structure we have in place and decided that we want to have someone within the football department who will be a constant presence going forward.

"The board have a vision of how they want the club to develop. At present we have a plan but not the man power to define and execute it.

"Gus is someone I worked with closely when I was on the board previously and he has the experience and knowledge we are looking for in the newly created role.

"Gus, in his role of technical director, will support both Tony Fitzpatrick and Oran Kearney in whatever manner they require for the club to progress and evolve."
