Saints sign Massimo Donati

St Mirren are delighted to announce the signing of Massimo Donati on a short-term deal until the end of the season.

The Italian midfielder has been training with Saints over the last few weeks and has impressed.

The 36 year-old began his career with Serie A side Atalanta before joining AC Milan in 2001.

Massimo has had experience of football in Scotland having joined Celtic in 2007 where he made 55 appearances and scored for the Hoops in vital Champions League matches. After leaving Celtic in 2009 he returned to Italy before making his way back to Scotland in 2016 to sign for Hamilton Academical.

Speaking on joining the club, Massimo said: "I'm still fit, I'm still good with my body. I had to train myself for a few days, then I got this opportunity which I took. I'm at a good club that are very organised; The stadium is good, the fans are as well and I'm happy to be here."

"I've enjoyed it, with the gaffer, all the staff and the team as well - they're very good guys, a very good team. In the team are a lot of young players. I'm here to help, if I can, everybody.

Assistant Manager James Fowler said: "We've been impressed with what we've seen, he's obviously played at a good level and he's got good experience. He spoke to the manager and was keen to come in and try and help the team between now and the end of the season.

"Obviously the boys have been doing great and it's a bit of additional cover. He can play centre back, as we lost Gregor Buchanan in January and we never really replaced him, and he's played defensive central midfield as well."

Hippolyte: I want to fight my way into the team

Myles Hippolyte made his debut for St Mirren in Saturday's 4-1 defeat at Livingston, when he came on as a substitute for Cammy Smith on 64 minutes.

Speaking to Buddievision, Hippolyte reflected on the team's performance, but admitted the right team won in the end.

It was a scrappy game," he said.

"Everyone witnessed it today what type of game they play, it's quite physical, a lot of long balls. But they deserved to win, they took their chances and they got the result.

"We thought the game was going to be a flurry of goals as well; scoring so early you expect more to come after that."

Hippolyte signed for St Mirren on transfer deadline day, but has suffered injury woes over the last few weeks. Saturday was the Englishman's first chance at some game time with his new club.

I've only been back in training for a week now. The first week has been good with the boys, I've enjoyed it, everything has been going well. Now to have a run out on the pitch.

"I was hoping my chance went in, but hopefully I get more time and I can help the team a bit more. Hopefully I get more minutes of training under my belt and then try and fight a way into the team."

Hippolyte's Saints' career almost got off to a perfect start as he was so close to scoring a debut goal which would have made the score 3-2 with 15 minutes left.

However, despite beating Neil Alexander in the Livingston goal, the ball was just cleared off the line by the Livingston defence.

Someone took a shot and I just anticipated it coming in, took it on the chest, and as I've turned and hit it's gone under the keeper's legs. I've just seen a blue boot - it happens to hit his boot and he's cleared it.

"You know, chances like that you just need a bit of luck. Then maybe the game would have changed around and we could have probably been pushing them back even more to get another goal. It was an open game and they took their chances and got the right result."

It wasn't the result Hippolyte had hoped for on his first appearance for the club, but he knows it is imperative for the side to bounce back with a win next week when the team take on Brechin City at the Paisley 2021 Stadium.

He also had praise for the 1700 plus fans who made the trip through to West Lothian.

It'll be important to us, we want to win every game and since I've been here everyone is pushing in the right direction and everyone's eager to get results and that's exactly what we want to do in the next two games. Especially with them being at home, we have the advantage. Hopefully it can work in our favour and the fans will get behind us as well, like they were today - they were superb today.

"It was a big turnout, first I've seen of a great turnout from St Mirren since being here - it was impressive. I appreciate the fans as well, hopefully we'll have the same turnout at home games and hopefully we'll do everything right.

"Sometimes that can affect players even more. I've witnessed it when the opposition have been scared of the crowd being on top of them, so it's something that benefits us, and hopefully we can carry on doing the same thing; get results over the next two games and hopefully impress them and leave ourselves chuffed as well."

Loan Watch

During the January transfer window a number of players moved out on loan to play regular football. Here's a look at how some of them got on last weekend.

Darryl Duffy netted his first Airdrieonians goal from the penalty spot as The Diamonds defeated Queens Park 2-1 in League One. That win moved Airdrieonians nine points clear of the relegation play-off spot but left Queens Park rooted to the bottom. Robbie Leitch was a second half substitute for The Spiders as he replaced Luke Donnelly on 55 minutes.

Darren Whyte played the full 90 minutes for Forfar Athletic as The Loons climbed out of the League One relegation play-off spot with an impressive 5-1 win over promotion play-off chasing Stranraer. Cameron MacPherson made his first start for Stranraer since joining The Blues on a development loan in January but was subbed at half-time.

Like Darren Whyte, Jordan Kirkpatrick also featured for the full match as Jim Goodwin's 10 man Alloa held Arbroath to a 0-0 draw at Gayfield. Ross Stewart was ruled out for The Wasps after picking up a knock.

In League Two, Andrew McDonald helped Elgin City to a 2-2 draw with top of the table Montrose. While Conor O'Keefe and Evan Horne were on the bench for Annan's 3-0 loss away to Stirling Albion with only the latter coming on on 77 minutes.

Reaction: Jack Ross post Livingston

Jack Ross talks about the team's first league defeat since the beginning of December, after suffering a 4-1 loss away to Livingston today.

Match Report: Livingston 4-1 St Mirren

St Mirren suffered their first league loss of 2018 as they fell to a 4-1 defeat at Livingston this afternoon.

Despite a dream start that saw Ryan Flynn net his first St Mirren goal with less than two minutes played, it was the home side who deservedly picked up all three point.

Indeed, Flynn's opener was the perfect beginning to the top of the table clash for Saints. Lewis Morgan was given time and space on the left side to get the ball into the box. A last ditch tackle from a Livingston defender denied Flynn the chance to get his initial shot away. The ball fell to Gavin Reilly whose effort was pushed away by Neil Alexander into Cammy Smith. It seemed certain that Smith would tuck home his 13th goal of the season only for his strike to be blocked on the line. It then finally fell to Flynn who poked home to send the 1500 plus travelling support wild.

But Saints couldn't capitalise on the good start and the home side almost found themselves level on six minutes when Lee Miller rose the highest heading just by the post.

The equaliser came on nine minutes when a mix up in the Buddies defence allowed ex-Saint Ryan Hardie to level. Craig Samson raced off his line to come for a long ball and collided with defender Jack Baird. The ball fell nicely for Hardie who only had to roll into the empty net to make it 1-1.

St Mirren reacted well and could have been ahead for a second time when Adam Eckersley had a go from outside the area. The full back found himself in acres of space and drove the ball towards the low right hand corner of the net with Alexander at full stretch tipping wide.

Four minutes later though the home side were in front as Hardie netted his second of the afternoon. An Alan Lithgow throw-in was headed on to the striker by Declan Gallagher and he volleyed beyond Samson to make it 2-1.

The Buddies arguably should have had a penalty almost immediately from the restart when Lewis Morgan was clearly pulled in the area but referee Alan Muir was unmoved much to the frustration of Morgan and the away support.

Livingston, however, started to get a grip on the game with Miller heading wide from a good ball across from Nicky Cadden.

The veteran striker wouldn't be denied his first goal for The Lions and netted it in spectacular fashion just a minute later. The ball bounced around the box before he met it with a lovely scissor kick to make it 3-1.

The game quietened down after Livi's third goal but they still had chances to add to their lead before the interval. Samson made a fairly routine stop to deny Hardie his hat-trick, while Rafa De Vita went close when he fired just wide from a corner.

Half Time: Livingston 3-1 St Mirren

Saints would have hoped to have started the second half in the same manner as they started the first half in the hopes of salvaging something from the match. But it was the home side who went close on 47 minutes with Samson making a terrific low save to block Lee Miller's header from Cadden's cross.

St Mirren could have had a goal back just a minute later when neat work from Morgan on the right saw the winger jinx into the box with his ball across narrowly just missing Cammy Smith who would have been fancied to stick the ball home.

Jack Ross made three changes in 13 minutes to try and spark some life into Saints. Gary MacKenzie, Danny Mullen and debutant Myles Hippolyte all came on in place of Ryan Flynn, Gavin Reilly and Cammy Smith.

Danny Mullen was the first to go close when he latched on to a terrific cross-field pass from Jack Baird. He took it down before lashing towards the near post only to be denied by Neil Alexander. From the resulting corner Livingston almost found themselves 4-1 ahead. Saints pushed players forward and when Alexander gathered he quickly sent the Lions forward with Hardie bursting through on goal and crashing a shot off the bar.

While the woodwork denied the home side on that occasion there should have been nothing to deny Cadden 60 seconds later when he broke the offside trap finding himself one-on-one with Samson. Inexplicably the winger managed to crash his shot off the side netting when it seemed a goal was certain.

Debutant Hippolyte was so unlucky not to have opened his St Mirren account with 15 minutes to go. A goal at that point would have made for an interesting finale to the match with the forward reacting quickest to a deflected shot. He had Alexander beaten only for Scott Pittman on the line to clear.

The game ticked away but Livingston would add a fourth in the final seconds after another defensive mistake from Saints. With Samson off his line, Scott Robinson lobbed the ball over the goalkeeper from the left wing to round off a disappointing afternoon for the league leaders.

Next up for Saints is bottom side Brechin at home in the Ladbrokes Championship and Jack Ross' side will look to get back to winning ways.

Match Preview: Livingston V St Mirren

St Mirren return to action on Saturday against Livingston at the Tony Macaroni Arena, after a well earned break last weekend.

Saints had a free weekend last week due to the Scottish Cup, so the team will be keen to get back to league action, as the league leaders look to cement their place at the top of the Scottish Championship.

Tomorrow's opponents currently occupy second spot in the league on goal difference, but are 14 points adrift with a game in hand. However, a win for The Saints tomorrow would increase that lead to 17 points on both Livingston and Dundee Utd, who are not in action this week because of Dumbarton's Irn-Bru Cup semi-final tie.

St Mirren have played Livingston twice so far this season and both times have came out on top with a 3-1 win. The first game took place at tomorrow's venue in a hard fought encounter. The scoring was opened about the 10 minute mark when Stephen McGinn's cross deflected off Craig Halkett's leg and spun over Neil Alexander to give Saints the lead. The defender made amends though by scoring a header from a corner five minutes later to even things up. St Mirren were then reduced to 10 men after Gary Irvine's tackle was deemed too dangerous. Top goalscorer Gavin Reilly pulled The Buddies back in front in the second half though, as he pounced on a goalkeeping error from Alexander to make the score 2-1 six minutes after the restart. Reilly then rounded off the afternoon nine minutes later when he got on the end of a Stelios header to thump the ball high into the net.

The most recent game took place back in November, where Saints when down 1-0 after the first 45 minutes thanks to Dale Carrick capitalising on Craig Samson's block in the six yard box. Jack Ross' side came out fighting in the second half though, as lewis Morgan's strike six minutes after the break brought the game back to level terms. Adam Eckersley then had an effort on the 66th minutes that ricochet off of a Livingston defender before bouncing off the back of Neill Alexander and trickling over the goal line to give St Mirren the lead. The game was then put to bed on the 78th minute when Jack Baird was brought down in the box from a corner. Ian McShane stepped up and cooly sent Alexander the wrong way to give Saints a much needed win at that time.

There could be a debut for new Saints star Myles Hippolyte against his old team tomorrow, as he is now fully fit after having some niggling injury problems the last couple of months. Hippolyte spent 18 months in West Lothian before signing for Falkirk in January 2016. Josh Todd also made his comeback this week playing in a development game which saw the young buds win 3-1 against St Johnstone.

After much speculation this week, Jack Ross will be on the St Mirren bench come Saturday, having turned down a move to Barnsley FC during the week. The manager's sole focus will now be on steering the club towards promotion.
