The sides have met twice in the league this season with Rangers winning on both occasions.

An Abdallah Sima double saw Rangers win 2-0 when the sides met at Ibrox in December.

Rangers won 3-0 when they visited The SMiSA Stadium in October. A first-half red card for Ryan Strain saw us reduced to 10 men and Rangers awarded a penalty which James Tavernier duly netted to put the visitors in front. Sima added a second deep into the second-half before Tavernier made it 3-0 in the final minute.

Our last win against Rangers came at The SMiSA Stadium in December 2020 after a dramatic 3-2 victory in the league cup quarter-finals.

The officials

David Dickinson takes charge of Saturday's match and he will be assisted by Graeme Stewart and Paul McAvinue. George Calder is the fourth official.

Don Robertson is the video assistant referee (VAR) and he's assisted by Gary Hilland.

James Scott joins Saints on initial loan move from Exeter City

St Mirren Football Club is delighted to announce the loan signing of James Scott until the end of the season subject to clearance.

The forward joins the Buddies on the temporary transfer from Exeter City for the remainder of the 2023/24 campaign. James will then join on a permanent two-year-deal with Saints in the summer.

The 23-year-old came through the ranks at Motherwell under Saints manager Stephen Robinson and his performances at the Steelmen saw him win a move to English Championship side Hull City for a seven-figure fee.

After 36 appearances for the Tigers, James returned to Scotland on loan to Hibernian in 2021/22 where he scored four goals for the Hibees. The forward would leave Hull City to join League One side Exeter City on a permanent deal in 2022.

Speaking to stmirren.com, manager Stephen Robinson said: "James is a player I worked with at Motherwell and we sold him for a substantial fee so that tells you the kind of quality he has.

"He had an injury when he first went to Hull that kind of scuppered his chances of success there. Sometimes you need picked back up and I believe I can do that with James.

He has a lot of talent. He can play anywhere across the front three so he fits in to our system and our squad. He’s someone I’m really looking forward to working with again.

"He’s only 23 with loads of potential and he adds a little spark that, at times, we could be missing in that final third.

"He’s very technical and can play with his left and right foot. He needs to get up to speed with his fitness but if we get a James Scott working as hard as we had him at Motherwell then we’ve got a very good player on our hands."

Speaking on his signing, James added: "I'm absolutely delighted to get it over the line. When I got the phone call from Stephen Robinson it was a no brainer.

"I feel like the gaffer got the most out of me as a player. I did really well under him at Motherwell and I feel like he can get the best out of me."

St Mirren drawn to face Celtic in Scottish Cup Fifth Round

St Mirren have been drawn at home to Celtic in the Fifth Round of the Scottish Gas Scottish Cup.

Saints will face the cinch Premiership league leaders at The SMiSA Stadium on the weekend of February 10th.

It is the second year in a row that the Buddies have been drawn to face Celtic in the Fifth Round of the Scottish Cup.

Full fixture details including ticketing arrangements will be announced in due course.

Manager happy to be into next round of the cup

I thought we dominated throughout. You want to be in the next round of the cup and ultimately that's what we've done."

Stephen Robinson was happy with his team's dominant performance as Saints progressed to the Fifth Round of the Scottish Cup with a 1-0 win over Queen of the South.

Gogic header secures Saints' progression

Alex Gogic's second-half header ensured Saints' name in the hat for the Fifth Round of the Scottish Gas Scottish Cup.

Stephen Robinson's men dominated the proceedings but missed a number of opportunities before Cypriot defender Gogic nodded home from a corner to secure our place in the draw.

Hyeokkyu Kwon made his Saints debut after joining on loan from Celtic last week. Elvis Bwomono also came in for his first start, while Conor McMenamin returned to the starting line-up after missing the Celtic game prior to the winter break. St Mirren Youth Academy players Evan Mooney, Callum Penman and Ethan Sutherland were given places on the bench.

The Buddies started brightly and the visitors had goalkeeper Harry Stone to thank for denying Saints an early lead with the stopper making a terrific save to claw a header over the bar on 12 minutes.

Saints thought they had the lead on 19 minutes when Greg Kiltie had the ball in the net. Jonah Ayunga's initial strike was saved by Stone but Kiltie was on hand to roll into the empty net only for the linesman's offside flag to deny the forward on his 99th St Mirren appearance.

The Buddies still had to be wary of Queen of the South's threat on the counter and when ex-Saints Academy graduate Kyle Doherty did well to hold off Alex Gogic, he managed to slide in Lewis Gibson who looked poised to fire the visitors in front only for stand-in captain Marcus Fraser to make a brilliant block.

Kiltie came close to putting Saints ahead with a strike from 20 yards that flew by the post just before the half hour mark.

Bwomono was denied a goal on his first start when his powerful strike was cleared off the line by Efe Ambrose four minutes after the restart. Four minutes after that Tanser looked like he was about to give us the lead with a sweetly struck volley from the edge of the box. The left-wing-back caught it perfectly and it appeared to be flying into the top corner off the net, but it came crashing off the cross bar.

Stephen Robinson made his first change just after the hour mark with Lewis Jamieson introduced in place of McMenamin. The 21-year-old sent in a good cross on 67 minutes which met the head of Kiltie, but the forward was leaning back and sent the header over.

The breakthrough finally came with less than 20 minutes remaining. Kiltie's corner was perfect as it met the head of Gogic who bulleted home to break the deadlock.

Alex Gogic bullets home header against Queen of the South.

Unlucky Kiltie was foiled by the offside flag once again when he smashed home on 77 minutes.

Substitute Mikael Mandron should have made it two with three minutes of normal time remaining but he fired his header from Boyd-Munce's corner over the bar. Thankfully, one would be enough as Saints put their name in the hat for the Fifth Round draw.

Visitor Information

  • Electronic Ticketing System

At the SMiSA Stadium we have an electronic ticketing system in place at the turnstiles.

The process of using the system is fairly straight-forward and easy to use:

    • On entering the turnstile you will see the ticket reader.
    • Place your match ticket (with the barcode or QR code facing upwards) or smartcard – into the aperture
    • Once the ticket/smartcard is accepted into the system the green light will illuminate and an audio alert will sound after which you should hear the turnstile being unlocked
    • Push the turnstile gate and enter the stadium as you normally would.

The whole process will only take a few seconds.

Please note that there will be stewards in attendance to help where required.

  • Street Parking on Matchday

The Club has been made aware of problems occasioned by inconsiderate parking in the area of Tannahill Road.

Seemingly supporters are parking despite the presence of double yellow lines and as a consequence local bus routes are also being blocked because streets in this area are narrow and fans are parking on both sides. People, many of whom are elderly, are having to walk from Greenhill Road to their homes because buses can’t get access.

Residents who have cars parked in driveways are experiencing similar difficulties getting their vehicles in and out. On being approached by local residents some supporters have been somewhat aggressive which could lead to confrontation.

St Mirren Football Club strives to be a good neighbour and we would ask that ALL supporters attending the stadium not only park in accordance with local parking restrictions but also give consideration to the needs of local residents by parking sensibly so as not to occasion an unnecessary obstruction.

  • Picking Up & Dropping Off by Car on Match Day

We are also aware of problems with patrons parking at the front of the Main Stand to pick up disabled supporters at the end of the game. This area is a 'no parking' zone on match days (with cones on the road) and has to be kept clear for emergency access. It is an inappropriate location for disabled spectator uplifts, as not only does it cause an obstruction on the road, it also causes a danger to pedestrians leaving the stadium.

Please note that the designated pick-up/drop off points are either in Drums Avenue or the two lay-byes on Ferguslie Park Avenue.

Scott Tanser loving life at Saints after hitting 100th appearance milestone

St Mirren's last match before the winter break saw Scott Tanser make his 100th appearance for the club.

The left-wing-back - who has been an ever present for Saints in the cinch Premiership this season - joined St Mirren in June 2021 following the expiry of his contract at St Johnstone and has proved to be an important part of Stephen Robinson’s side.

The 29-year-old admits it’s not been all plain sailing during his time at the Buddies, with off-field struggles as well as injury issues playing their part in a difficult year for him last season.

But self-reflection during the summer has led Scott to his happiest time in football and he’s loving being part of this Saints team.

After reaching the milestone 100th appearance, Scott told stmirren.com: “I was really proud.

100 appearances for any club is a great achievement and hopefully there will be many more. I’ll be pushing for 200 now!

"I know I made my 300th career appearance against Rangers at Ibrox in December and hopefully now I can just add more here.

"My first season was really good under Jim Goodwin and I enjoyed every minute of it. I thought I did well and settled into the club really well. I knew some players when I joined which always helps.

"I then had troubles with injuries and some troubles off the pitch as well so last season wasn’t a really good season for me personally.

I took the whole summer to reflect on that season, put all the mental stuff behind me and I’ve not looked back.

"This season has been great for me. Sometimes you need to take yourself away from the football side of things. Your health is more important than anything and that is what I got to learn."

Happiness away from football has helped translate on the pitch with Scott believing he is playing his best football of his career.

"Football was always the main thing in my life but now for me it’s family first and you need time for yourself to reflect and be happy.

I had real struggles and I wasn’t enjoying it last season but as soon as I came back in the summer I was as happy as I’ve ever been.

"I’m happier away from the pitch now and I’m happier coming in to training. I can’t wait to come in every day and see the lads. We have a great group of people in and around the club. Not just the players and coaching staff but everyone at the club. That goes for people like Mags who works at the training ground. Everyone is together and everyone is included."

It’s the best changing room I’ve been in. I’ve been in some changing rooms where there are divides and some groups that form here and there, but there’s nothing like that here. When a new player comes in they are made to feel welcome because everyone embraces them and makes them feel comfortable.

"I felt that way when I joined also. I had been at St Johnstone for four or five years and felt comfortable there and when I left it was a new challenge. There’s always a worry about how you are going to settle in. But straight away I hit the ground running and that’s down to everyone at the club helping you doing that."

"I always said the double cup winning season at St Johnstone was my best in terms of playing, but now I feel like I’m back to the player I was when I was younger. Obviously, I’m not young now, I’m kicking on a bit!

"I’m playing with freedom, playing with confidence and that’s something I always wanted to be doing. I’m so hard on myself and I could get so deep into that. With a lot of self-reflection I feel confident and free.

The gaffer has been great with me," he continued.

"He’s given me a lot of responsibility this season being an older player and I think that’s helped as I’ve never really had that responsibility of guiding younger players. I’ve got to have a voice now and I enjoy that.

"It’s definitely brought out a more confident side of me because I was quiet. Everyone knows I’m quiet away from football and just keep myself to myself.

"On the pitch, I’ve realised you can’t be quiet and the more responsibility you have, the players respect you and the fans are great. They keep singing my song which everyone loves. It’s really nice."

'Oh Scotty Tanser runs down the wing for me' can be heard most weeks at The SMiSA Stadium and Scott admitted it's not just the Saints support who enjoy the song.

Zach [Hemming] is singing it all the time," he laughed.

"Even when fans are singing it during the games I get it in my head as well. It makes you play better. The first season I came here the fans took to me because they saw the type of player I was.

I’ve been a football fan myself and all you want is 100% from a player and if that’s what they give you then you are happy with it. That’s what I try to give every single week."

Scott was talking to stmirren.com as our winter training camp in Pinatar was reaching its end.

The week in Spain has been brilliant.

"It’s always good to get away and work hard. You also get the benefits of the better weather and it gives everyone that push to work harder.

"It’s good for everyone bonding as well even though we are a strong bunch. I really think this week has really brought everyone together."

Scott Tanser in training at our winter camp in Pinatar

Saints return to action on Saturday following the winter break with Queen of the South the visitors in the Scottish Gas Scottish Cup.

Scott says he's keen on finishing the season strongly after a good first half of the season.

"I think we started the season really well," he said.

"Performances aren’t always going to be at a top level but it’s about how you bounce back from these games. I think to be fifth coming the halfway point at the season is great for the club.

We know as a group what we are trying to achieve, and we are on track to do that.

"I just want to keep playing the best that I can and pitch in with a few goals and assists to help the team."
