Elvis Bwomono settling in at Saints

Elvis Bwomono has had to be patient after joining Saints last month.

He spoke to us at our training camp in Pinatar to discuss how he's settled in so far.

Up Next: St Mirren v Queen of the South (20th Jan)

St Mirren return to action this weekend as we get set to host League One side Queen of the South in the Scottish Gas Scottish Cup.

Stephen Robinson's men welcome the Doonhamers to The SMiSA Stadium in the Fourth Round of the competition. Having entered at this stage, this is Saints' first Scottish Cup match this season. The Buddies defeated Dundee in the Fourth Round last season before exiting with a defeat away to eventual winners Celtic in the Fifth Round.

Queen of the South defeated Championship leaders Dundee United at Palmerston in the Third Round to reach this stage. Marvin Bartley's side defeated the Arabs 4-3 on penalties after a 2-2 draw in normal time. Ex-Saint Gavin Reilly was on the scoresheet for the Doonhamers as they progressed.

Previous

This is the first time the two sides have met since a League Cup encounter at Palmerston in October 2020. Queen of the South shocked Saints by running into a 2-0 lead early on, but second-half goals from Jamie McGrath and Marcus Fraser saw the Buddies come back to draw 2-2.

Our last home match against Queen of the South came at The SMiSA Stadium in February 2018 when Liam Smith and Harry Davis scored in a 2-0 Saints win in our Championship winning season.

The Buddies have won four of the last five matches against the Doonhamers, with our last defeat coming at The SMiSA Stadium in January 2017 when Queen of the South won 3-0.

Ryan Flynn celebrates with Stephen McGinn, goalscorer Harry Davis and Cammy Smith the last time we faced Queen of the South at The SMiSA Stadium back in 2018.

Ryan Flynn was in the Saints side that faced Queen of the South the last time we faced them at The SMiSA Stadium back in 2018

Stephen Robinson on Pinatar trip

Stephen Robinson spoke at our winter training camp at the Pinatar Arena in Spain.

The manager talked about the benefits of the the training camp, Hyeokkyu Kwon joining up with the side, young players involved and reflected on our season so far.

St Mirren pays condolences to Denis Connaghan

St Mirren Football Club is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of our former player Denis Connaghan at the age of 79 following a short period of illness.

Denis, a goalkeeper in his playing days, joined St Mirren in July 1966 from Renfrew and would go on to make 127 appearances for the Saints, keeping 23 clean sheets before departing to join Celtic in 1971.

The thoughts of everyone at St Mirren are with Denis' loved ones at this sad time.

Saints In Spain | Training Camp update

St Mirren are three days into a training camp at the Pinatar Arena in Spain with Stephen Robinson’s men being put through their paces during the winter break.

The Buddies have been almost two weeks without a competitive match but return to domestic action with a Scottish Cup Fourth Round tie against Queen of the South at The SMiSA Stadium on Saturday (20th Jan).

Saints warmed up for that tie with a friendly match against a AFE (Association of Spanish Footballers) Fútbol select side at the Campoamor yesterday afternoon. New signing Hyeokkyu Kwon played the first 45 minutes with Lewis Jamieson netting a first-half brace before Zach Hemming saved a penalty kick. There were a number of changes at the half-time interval as most players were given minutes. One of those was Toyosi Olusanya who made it 3-0 to Saints on the hour mark. AFE Fútbol pulled one back from the penalty spot on 67 minutes and added a second on 82 minutes from a corner but couldn’t find an equaliser.

Stephen Robinson’s side will have further training sessions at the Pinatar Arena at the beginning of the week before travelling back to Scotland on Thursday afternoon.

St Mirren sign Hyeokkyu Kwon on loan until the end of the season

St Mirren Football Club is happy to announce the loan signing of Hyeokkyu Kwon until the end of the season subject to clearance.

The Korean midfielder joins Saints on the temporary transfer for the remainder of the campaign from cinch Premiership league leaders Celtic.

22-year-old Hyeokkyu joined Celtic in July after agreeing a five-year-deal to move from Busan I-Park in his home country.

With Keanu Baccus away with Australia as part of their Asian Cup squad, manager Stephen Robinson admitted it was an area that he was keen to add to.

Stephen Robinson said: "He’s a player that comes highly recommended. Celtic were very keen for him to come to us which is a complement to the coaching staff here.

"He’s played a lot of games in South Korea and was signed by Celtic for big money. It was an area we needed to strengthen in midfield and with Keanu away at the Asian Cup it was important that we strengthened there.

"We believe that he [Hyeokkyu] will come in and add that strength. He breaks up play really well and he can start play really well for us as well. I’ve had some good conversations with Brendan Rodgers about him and we’re delighted to have him in."

Alex Greive joins Dundee United on loan

St Mirren Football Club can confirm that Alex Greive has joined Dundee United on loan until the end of the season subject to SFA approval.

Alex joins the cinch Championship side for the remainder of the 2023/24 season and links up with ex-Saints boss Jim Goodwin who, ironically, gave the forward his St Mirren debut against Dundee United at Tannadice almost two years ago.

The 24-year-old New Zealand international has made 22 appearances for Saints this season, though only three of those have been starts.

Manager Stephen Robinson said: "This opportunity arose for Alex to go and get more game time which was something we felt we couldn’t guarantee him at this moment in time.

"It’s a good chance for him to go and get more playing time and frees up some money for us to potentially add to the squad during the window.

"We wish Alex the best of luck during his time at Dundee United."
