Stephen Robinson praises team's resilience after win at Motherwell

It's a fantastic result. I thought we were really well organised and resilient."

Manager Stephen Robinson praised his side's resilience after winning 1-0 away to Motherwell in the cinch Premiership.

Scott Tanser goal gives Saints all three points

Scott Tanser's second-half volley was enough to see St Mirren pick up all three points in a 1-0 win over Motherwell.

The left-wing back's first goal of the season saw Saints win at Fir Park for the first time in almost three years and extend the current unbeaten run to 10 matches.

Captain Mark O'Hara returned to the starting eleven after weeks of injury, while Mikael Mandron also came back into the starting eleven after missing our 1-1 draw with Livingston at The Tony Macaroni Arena. That saw Keanu Baccus and Toyosi Olusanya drop to the bench in the only changes to the side from last time out.

The Buddies made a relatively bright start with Tanser and Alex Gogic both firing efforts wide in the opening moments before Conor McMenamin had a big opportunity on 15 minutes. The Northern Irish forward - who impressed for his home nation during the international break - was picked out by Mandron with a nice pass from the left, but McMenamin sclaffed at it which allowed Liam Kelly to comfortably gather in the Motherwell goal.

Marcus Fraser went into the book five minutes later after he obstructed Harry Paton close to the Saints box. Blair Spittal took the resulting free-kick for the hosts but sent it into the arms of Zach Hemming.

McMenamin wasn't too far away from his first St Mirren goal when he sent an effort just over the bar from 20 yards after good work from Greg Kiltie saw the forward rob the ball from a Motherwell defender. Less than a minute later the home side came even closer when Theo Bair got in behind the Saints defence. The forward looked odds on to put his side ahead but fired his effort just by the far post as the first-half ended goalless.

Saints would take the lead 10 minutes after the restart when Tanser scored his first of the season. The 28-year-old ghosted in at the back most to meet a deep Ryan Strain cross and volleyed beyond Kelly to put Stephen Robinson's men ahead. There was a VAR check for offside but the goal stood, much to the delight of the 1000+ travelling support.

The Buddies almost doubled their advantage just four minutes later when Mandron was picked out by Strain this time at the far post. The forward rose to meet the corner, but his header was well saved by the feet of Kelly.

The hosts would start pushing for an equaliser with Hemming equal to a Callum Slattery free-kick, getting two good hands behind the effort to push away on 65 minutes. Motherwell introduced Oli Shaw from the bench with a little over 10 minutes to play and the striker had a chance to make an instant impact when he was found in space inside the box. But Shaw struck a tame effort straight into the hands of Hemming.

As the game ticked towards injury time, Motherwell were inches away from a leveller when substitute Georgie Gent's strike was touched on to the underside of the bar by Hemming before Saints managed to get clear.

The Buddies would stay resilient though to ensure the three points would head back to Paisley.

Delight as Jonah Ayunga agrees contract extension

St Mirren Football Club is delighted to announce that Jonah Ayunga has signed a contract extension until summer 2025.

The 26-year-old – who is edging closer to a return from injury – joined Saints from English side Morecambe in summer 2022 on an original two-year deal.

He impressed in his first season at Saints with seven goals in 24 appearances before rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in a cinch Premiership match against Motherwell in January.

As the forward nears a return to action, the club has moved to extend his deal to keep him tied to Saints for a further year.

Speaking to stmirren.com, Jonah admitted it was an easy decision to further his stay at the club which he described as having been the most enjoyable of his career.

The manager asked if I would like to extend my stay and it was a no brainer for me. I’m still injured at the moment but it shows a lot of belief from the club and the gaffer.

"Before I got injured I was enjoying it here more than I have at any other club. That’s down to the boys in the changing room, the manager, the staff and just the feeling around the club with supporters.

"I wasn’t really expecting to get an offer until I was back playing and back fit but the fact the club has offered me it shows they believe in me and will support me through my recovery and building up to what I was before."

The forward admitted his working relationship with Stephen Robinson was a big factor in signing his new deal and spoke about the impact the manager has had in his career.

When I first signed with the gaffer [at Morecambe] I had only been playing professional men’s football for a season at Bristol Rovers so I was still getting used to the levels required and finding out what I needed to do as a player.

"The manager has given me a lot of advice, a lot of lessons and he obviously believes in me. I enjoy working with him so it was a no brainer."

Stephen Robinson added: "I think loyalty works both ways.

Jonah was very good for us before he got injured and it was important that we tied Jonah down as he’ll be a big part of what we are doing.

"He’s a very talented player and we’re backing him before he’s 100% fit again but we are confident he will be and will play a big part in things. It's a credit to the football club as well that they’ve gone and give him the contract on the basis that he’s not 100% fit yet.

"Jonah has showed a really steeliness and mental strength and really pushed himself every day which he will get the rewards for. A lot of credit has to be paid to Gerry Docherty as well for keeping Jonah motivated and keeping him believing.

"He’s joining in with bits and pieces in training and hopefully over the next few weeks we’ll get some reserve game time into him.

"When he’s joined in with training and done a little bit of finishing he’s been getting rounds of applause. It’s a super group of boys. They support each other and I can see why he feels at home because everybody wants him to do well."

Murray Campbell joins Burnley FC

St Mirren Football Club can confirm that Murray Campbell has joined English Premier League side Burnley FC's Academy.

The 17-year-old St Mirren Youth Academy graduate’s contract had expired in the summer and he stated his desire to move on. The club would have been due training compensation for the defender, however, we have come to an agreement with Burnley for an undisclosed fee with a potential for further add-ons and a future sell on fee.

It’s a credit to the St Mirren Youth Academy that we have produced another talented young player that has moved on to the English Premier League following Dylan Reid’s move to Crystal Palace in January.

We wish Murray the best of luck in his future career.

Up Next: Motherwell v St Mirren (16th Sep)

Saints return from the international break with a trip to Fir Park to face Motherwell on Saturday.

The Buddies maintained their unbeaten start to the cinch Premiership season with a last-gasp Stav Nahmani header securing a point in a 1-1 draw away to Livingston in the last match before the break. Stephen Robinson's side have won two and drawn two of their opening four league matches to sit in third place.

Motherwell, meanwhile, are also unbeaten in the league having won three and drawn one of their first four matches to sit level on points with leaders Celtic. The Fir Park side defeated Hearts 1-0 at Tynecastle prior to the international break and are in second place on 10 points.

Saints won one and lost two of our three meetings with Motherwell last season. A 1-0 win for the Buddies at The SMiSA Stadium in January came either side of narrow defeats in August (0-1) and February (1-2).
