Chairman's Update - August 2023

With the new season now truly underway I thought it was time that I provided a brief update.

It’s been a very encouraging start to the season. The team have qualified from their Viaplay Cup group and with two SPFL wins out of two we are already six points better off compared to last season. Whilst the team are rightly getting plaudits I want to highlight the fantastic support we’ve had from every single supporter at these games. The team are clearly thriving on the positive encouragement from the stands and I believe you can feel the growing difference in the atmosphere at The SMiSA Stadium following our decision last year to retain three stands for St Mirren fans at all home games.

I want to thank every one of you who have bought Season Tickets and Replica Kits for 2023/24. Your support has been fantastic in helping us break all records at the SMiSA Stadium. As well as the obvious financial benefit, your commitment is of great encouragement to the team as we strive to continue to progress on the park again this season.

I’d like to congratulate Kate Cooper and all at St Mirren Women on a successful pre-season trip to Germany and wish them the very best as their new SWF League One season gets underway on Sunday. There has been tremendous growth within the women's team over the last year or so and we are excited for that to continue this season also.

You will also have seen the recent relaunch of our Help a Buddie scheme and I would ask every-one who is able to support this initiative to do so again this year. I have already done so personally as I know how much it meant to so many from organisations in our local community to be able to attend a game last season. You can make your contribution by using THIS LINK.

There’s also a lot going on behind the scenes to improve the way we operate and the experience on match days. We hope to start work imminently on three new Executive Boxes in the Main Stand. In addition, we will be installing a new, improved scoreboard together with electronic external and trackside advertising in the next few weeks. Discussions continue as to how best to provide a replacement for The Dome which sadly had to be decommissioned this year. The arrangements to decide on the best approach and secure the necessary grants will take a bit of time but we are making progress and we will update you once any decisions are made. One thing we have decided is that the replacement is likely to be on a different part of our land so work to clear and reinstate the existing site will commence very soon.

As a Board we continue to work as hard as we can to improve things on and off the park. Whilst you can never take anything for granted in football, with your continued support, there is no reason we can’t make 2023/24 even better than last season.

Visitor Information

  • Electronic Ticketing System

At the SMiSA Stadium we have an electronic ticketing system in place at the turnstiles.

The process of using the system is fairly straight-forward and easy to use:

    • On entering the turnstile you will see the ticket reader.
    • Place your match ticket (with the barcode or QR code facing upwards) or smartcard – into the aperture
    • Once the ticket/smartcard is accepted into the system the green light will illuminate and an audio alert will sound after which you should hear the turnstile being unlocked
    • Push the turnstile gate and enter the stadium as you normally would.

The whole process will only take a few seconds.

Please note that there will be stewards in attendance to help where required.

  • Street Parking on Matchday

The Club has been made aware of problems occasioned by inconsiderate parking in the area of Tannahill Road.

Seemingly supporters are parking despite the presence of double yellow lines and as a consequence local bus routes are also being blocked because streets in this area are narrow and fans are parking on both sides. People, many of whom are elderly, are having to walk from Greenhill Road to their homes because buses can’t get access.

Residents who have cars parked in driveways are experiencing similar difficulties getting their vehicles in and out. On being approached by local residents some supporters have been somewhat aggressive which could lead to confrontation.

St Mirren Football Club strives to be a good neighbour and we would ask that ALL supporters attending the stadium not only park in accordance with local parking restrictions but also give consideration to the needs of local residents by parking sensibly so as not to occasion an unnecessary obstruction.

  • Picking Up & Dropping Off by Car on Match Day

We are also aware of problems with patrons parking at the front of the Main Stand to pick up disabled supporters at the end of the game. This area is a 'no parking' zone on match days (with cones on the road) and has to be kept clear for emergency access. It is an inappropriate location for disabled spectator uplifts, as not only does it cause an obstruction on the road, it also causes a danger to pedestrians leaving the stadium.

Please note that the designated pick-up/drop off points are either in Drums Avenue or the two lay-byes on Ferguslie Park Avenue.

  • Finding the SMiSA Stadium

  • Getting to the SMiSA Stadium

    BY ROAD

Follow signs for Paisley & Glasgow Airport. Exit the M8 at Junction 29 (St James’ Interchange) which is just after Glasgow Airport turn off if travelling east to west. Be careful not to exit on to the A737 which is signposted for Irvine. It is best to stay in the middle lane when passing the Airport as this leads naturally to the St James’ Interchange exit.

At the interchange take the first left onto a dual carriageway with some football parks on the left hand side. Follow this road and after a sharp right hand bend you should now be in Greenock Road. Then take your first right on to Clark Street and drive to the end of the street which is the junction with Greenhill Road, turn left and you will see the stadium on the opposite side of the road.

    BY RAIL

Get train from Paisley Gilmour Street to Paisley St James – exit from the station is straight onto Greenhill Road where the stadium is facing you. To plan your journey by rail with Scotrail please click HERE.

    BY BUS

Most buses will stop at Paisley Cross or Mill Street, from both you will see the Paisley Town Hall. From the Town Hall cross the High Street towards the Piazza Shopping Centre, when acoss walk towards the town centre until you come to Gilmour Street. Turn right on to Gilmour Street and walk towards the railway station which is about 150 yards away. From there you can get train to Paisley St James or if you prefer to walk the following routes are advised by the police:

Home fans: cross road to the left on to St James Street – follow through up Underwood Road then turn right at Greenhill Road where stadium is 200 yards further along the road. Access to the Main Stand is from Greenhill Road and the South and West Stands will be accessed from Drums Avenue.

Away fans: cross road to Love Street continue up the street till you come to Albion Street where you will turn left. Follow Albion Street until you come to the junction with Greenock Road where you will turn right. Cross the road then walk about 200 yards before taking your first left on to Clark Street. Walk straight up Clark Street to the end of the street which is the junction with Greenhill Road, turn left and you will see the the stadium on the opposite side of the road. Access to the North Stand will be from Ferguslie Park Avenue.

Help a Buddie returns | Contribute and Nominate

Help a Buddie is back for the new season!

The initiative was launched last season as supporters bought and donated match tickets with the aim of giving some of the most vulnerable and at need in our community the chance to attend matches at The SMiSA Stadium where they may not have previously had the opportunity.

Last season, the club received welcome contributions from many fans which allowed tickets to be donated to the likes of ACCORD Hospice, The Disability Resource Centre, Barnardo’s Paisley Threads, Spinners Gate Resource Centre, Paisley Men Shed, Cahonas Scotland, Chest and Heart Stroke Scotland, Star Project, Renfrewshire Council of Alcohol (RCA) and Ukrainian families.

With your support we can welcome many more to The SMiSA Stadium this season and introduce them to the St Mirren family.

Up Next: St Mirren v Motherwell (19th Aug)

It's a return to cup football this weekend as we host Motherwell at The SMiSA Stadium in the second round of the Viaplay Cup.

The Buddies head into the all Premiership tie in good spirits after two wins from the opening two cinch Premiership matches saw Stephen Robinson's men make it five wins on the spin. Saints topped Group H of the Viaplay Cup after wins against Arbroath (4-0), Cowdenbeath (1-0) and Forfar Athletic (4-0) to advance to the second round.

Motherwell have made an unbeaten start to their season with four points from their opening two league matches. Stuart Kettlewell's side drew 1-1 with Dundee on the opening day before a 2-1 win against Hibernian at Fir Park on Saturday.

The Steelmen progressed to the second round of the Viaplay Cup after winning Group G - taking 11 points after wins against Elgin City (2-0), Queen's Park (1-0) and East Fife (3-0), while also drawing 3-3 with Queen of the South and claiming a bonus point following a penalty shoot out.

Previous

Saints won one and lost two of our three meetings with Motherwell last season.

The Buddies were beaten 1-0 at The SMiSA Stadium on the opening day of the 2022/23 season. But a Curtis Main goal saw us win 1-0 when the Fir Park side visited Paisley again in January. The Steelmen took the win on our only trip to Motherwell with goals from Kevin Van Veen and Max Johnston enough despite Ryan Strain pulling one back for Saints.

Saints were victorious the last time the two sides met in this competition back in October 2009. Goals from Michael Higdon and Jack Ross as well as a Stephen Craigan own goal gave the Buddies a 3-0 home win at the quarter-final stage.

Michael Higdon scored for Saints in a 3-0 win the last time we faced Motherwell in the League Cup

Mark O'Hara set for short spell on sidelines

St Mirren manager Stephen Robinson today confirmed that Mark O'Hara is set for a short spell on the sidelines following a scan yesterday.

The Saints captain missed Saturday's win against Dundee in the cinch Premiership after picking up the thigh injury in training on Friday.

O'Hara is expected to miss upcoming matches against Motherwell and Aberdeen, but scan results showed the injury wasn't as bad as initially feared and the midfield man could potentially return ahead of the international break in September.

It was a lot more positive than we maybe expected," the manager told stmirren.com.

"We're looking at a three-week window and a chance for Mark to be fit for the Livingston game. We're quite confident he will be fit after the international break, if not before.

"Mark is such an important player and has been fantastic for us. With the numbers in the squad, we can't deal with long-term injuries so it's great news."

Stephen Robinson pleased with win against Dundee

There was a lot of good stuff. We're getting better."

Stephen Robinson gives his reaction to today's 2-1 win over Dundee at The SMiSA Stadium.

Two wins from two for Saints to start cinch Premiership season

St Mirren made it two wins from two at the start of the cinch Premiership season after a 2-1 victory over Dundee at The SMiSA Stadium.

An own goal from ex-Saint Joe Shaughnessy had the Buddies ahead early on before Zach Hemming saved a Dundee penalty. Mikael Mandron headed home at the end of the first-half to have us two to the good at the interval. The visitors pulled one back in the second-half, but Stephen Robinson's men held on to claim all three points.

There were two changes to the side that defeated Hibernian at Easter Road on the opening day. Skipper Mark O'Hara missed out after a thigh injury in training on Friday. That meant Marcus Fraser captained the side with Caolan Boyd-Munce replacing the 27-year-old in the starting eleven. Mandron returned from his injury in place of Toyosi Olusanya.

The Buddies hit the front with just seven minutes on the clock. Conor McMenamin's dangerous cross from the right was nodded beyond Trevor Carson by ex-Saints captain Shaughnessy on his return to The SMiSA Stadium. It had come after an early penalty shout when Greg Kiltie's volley from the edge of the area looked like it may have come off the hand of a Dundee defender a few moments earlier.

McMenamin came close to putting Saints 2-0 ahead on 21 minutes. The Northern Irish winger met Scott Tanser's cross and his header crashed off the bar before Kiltie's follow-up overhead drifted well wide.

Dundee had the chance to equalise from the penalty spot on 35 minutes after a VAR intervention saw the Dark Blues awarded a spot kick. Mandron was penalised form a pull in the box and despite referee Colin Steven missing it initially, he was advised by VAR Nick Walsh to take a look at the pitch-side monitor where he subsequently awarded the penalty. Zach Robinson stepped up for the Dee but was denied by Hemming who went the right way and pushed away with his feet.

It would be a costly miss for the visitors as the Buddies would double their advantage in added on time at the end of the first-half. It was Mandron with the goal as he headed home Boyd-Munce's brilliant delivery to score his fourth goal in five starts for Saints.

Dundee pulled a goal back just after the hour mark when Josh Mulligan nodded home a cross from the left. There was a lengthy VAR check for handball, however the goal stood. The visitors had a big chance to draw level minutes later when McCowan got in behind the Saints defence, but his strike was well saved by Hemming.

Saints boss Stephen Robinson responded by making a double substitution with Toyosi Olusanya and Alex Greive introduced in place of Kiltie and Mandron. Greive almost made an instant impact when he swung a foot on Tanser's clipped ball in, but Shaughnessy was on the line to clear for the visitors with a VAR check saying the ball didn't cross the line. Fellow substitution Olusanya had a big opportunity to make it 3-1 on 76 minutes when he was found by McMenamin's cross. The forward had a free header from close-range, but nodded over.

Saints had to deal with pressure from the away side with seven added minutes at the end of the game, but held firm to claim the three points.

Up Next: St Mirren v Dundee (12th Aug)

St Mirren return to The SMiSA Stadium on Saturday for our first cinch Premiership home match of 2023/24 as we host Dundee.

Stephen Robinson's men kicked off the new cinch Premiership season with a dramatic 3-2 win against Hibernian at Easter Road on the opening day of the season. Two goals in two minutes from Mark O'Hara and Toyosi Olusanya had Saints 2-0 ahead at half-time. But Hibernian pulled it back to 2-2 with goals from Adam Le Fondre and Christian Doidge. It looked like the Buddies might have had to settle for a point, only for Alex Greive to score in the last minute of normal time to give us the points and our first opening day win since 2020.

Newly-promoted Dundee started their season with an opening day draw against Motherwell. The Dee drew 1-1 with the Steelmen at Dens Park with Lyall Cameron scoring as Tony Docherty's side came from behind to take a point.

Previous

St Mirren hosted Dundee at The SMiSA Stadium in the Scottish Cup last season. Neither side could be separated after a goalless 120 minutes with Saints going through after a 3-1 win on penalties.

Saints were victorious in the previous two cinch Premiership meetings - winning 2-0 at The SMiSA Stadium in May 2022 thanks to goals from Alex Greive and Curtis Main, while Connor Ronan's injury time goal gave us a 1-0 victory at Dens Park in March 2022.

Dundee's last victory against the Buddies came in October 2021 when Max Anderson's goal gave the Dark Blues a 1-0 win in Paisley.
