Delight as management team extend contracts until 2026

St Mirren Football Club is delighted to announce that manager Stephen Robinson has agreed a new deal until summer 2026.

Assistant Manager Diarmuid O’Carroll has also agreed a new contract that keeps him with the club for the same period.

Since taking over in February 2022, Stephen has led us to our most successful top-flight campaign since 1985 as well as finishing in the top six for the first time in its current format. Last season saw us finish with our highest points tally – 46 - in the current format as well as winning nine home matches in a season in the top-flight for the first time since 1987.

Chairman John Needham said: "We are thrilled that Stephen and Diarmuid have extended their contracts until 2026.

"I have been hugely impressed by their collective professionalism and ambition since they joined the club last year.

"Both played such a huge role in achieving our aims of a top six finish last season and have been committed to helping grow the club in a sustainable way. I am excited to be entering the new season as we look to build upon the relative success we’ve had during their tenure so far."

Stephen Robinson said: "I’m delighted and very grateful to the board and the fans for their support. Now it’s time to keep building and keep taking the football club forward.

"The contract was always going to get signed, there was a trust basis that we just wanted to finish the season and make sure we concentrated fully on that. I enjoy what we’re doing and enjoy the challenge of trying to defy the odds next season and get into that top six."

Reflecting on his time at the club so far, the manager said: "It’s been excellent.

The club has grown over the period we’ve been here. We’ve tried to put structures in place that maybe weren’t previously here that can take the club and make it sustainable in the higher reaches of this division. It’s about building the club and doing everything in our power to make us sustainable first and foremost and successful at the same time.

I thought it was very important that we got Diarmuid tied down as well on a longer-term deal as he’s been a part of the relative success we’ve had.

"He’s a young, clever coach. He’s very bright on and off the pitch in terms of analysis and technical awareness as well. He’s working at international level which is great for St Mirren in terms of player contacts. I’m delighted we’ve got both contracts sorted and was very keen to make sure Diarmuid stayed alongside myself as well.

"I get the credit at times and the stick when it doesn’t go well. It isn’t just one man that makes any football club successful, you surround yourself with good people. I think that’s the biggest thing we have here in Gerry Docherty, Jamie Langfield, Allan McManus, Garry McColl to name the ones that work close to me. That’s important for the football club. The guys we have need to be very good and go above and beyond in their jobs. Every one of them does that, and Diarmuid epitomises that."

Diarmuid O’Carroll added: "I’m absolutely delighted to extend my deal at St Mirren. It was a very straightforward process once the contract was offered. I’m extremely excited at the direction the club is going both on and off the pitch.

"I’ve loved my time at the club since joining last February and I’m confident that myself, the manager and the staff can continue to drive standards and hopefully maintain our progression on the pitch."

St Mirren to face Greenock Morton in Pre-Season

St Mirren will face Greenock Morton at Cappielow in a pre-season Renfrewshire derby.

The two fan-owned clubs will face off in Greenock at 3pm on Saturday 8th July ahead of our Viaplay Cup campaign getting underway the following week.

It will be the first Renfrewshire derby played in front of a crowd since our 2-1 win at The SMiSA Stadium in 2018 on the day we lifted the Scottish Championship trophy.

Pre-season fixtures against Morton were previously commonplace as part of the Renfrewshire Cup, however, that tournament hasn't taken place since 2014. Saints were the last winners of the trophy having defeated the Greenock side 1-0 at Cappielow.

St Mirren Chief Operating Officer Keith Lasley said: "We are looking forward to a Renfrewshire derby as part of our preparations for season 2023/24.

"While it's not quite the Renfrewshire Cup as it was contested for many years, we hope it will have a similar feel."

Full ticket information will be confirmed next week.

Gordon Scott reflects on time at St Mirren after standing down from the board

Having decided to step down from the club Board last week, Gordon Scott reflected on his time at St Mirren, the journey to fan ownership and looks to what is ahead.

St Mirren to vote NO to conference league proposals

St Mirren Football Club has carefully considered proposals made for a newly created Conference League that would sit in the Fifth Tier of the Scottish Football pyramid.

All 42 SPFL clubs were invited to express an interest in enrolling a B Team into a newly created league, due to start in season 2024/25. However, we have decided that the club does not feel it can support these proposals and will not accept the invitation to be involved.

The club has spent a considerable amount of time assessing the advantages and practicalities of being involved in such a league as well as engaging with a number of stakeholders including a fans survey via SMiSA and its members. In the survey, 83% of respondents told SMiSA they would not be in favour of the Conference League proposal. As a fan-owned club, we feel it’s vital that we listen to the views of our supporters. Given the significant resource that would be required, including a mandatory financial contribution and staffing a B Team, we do not feel this current proposal works for us as a club.

While we would always look to support proposals that we feel aim to improve the development of young Scottish players, we are unconvinced at this time that a Fifth Tier Conference League system is the best way to achieve this.

The club would support calls for a review of the current loan system to allow for more strategic partnerships within SPFL clubs and give more of our younger players the opportunity to play across various levels within Scotland.

Meantime, we aim to re-establish a development side to bridge the gap between our U18s and first-team and continue to utilise the loan market to optimise the player pathway into our first team.
