Andrew Webster departs St Mirren Youth Academy

St Mirren Football Club can confirm that Andrew Webster has departed the club to take on a role at Heart of Midlothian.

Andrew initially joined Saints as a player in 2015 before taking on a role with the St Mirren Youth Academy following his retirement in 2017.

Working closely alongside Head of Academy, Allan McManus, Andrew took his first steps in his coaching development at the Buddies as Head of Pro Phase where he worked with our development and U18 squads.

Speaking on his departure, Allan McManus said: "I'd like to wish Andrew good luck as he moves on to the next part of his journey. He has been one of the most dedicated professionals I have worked with and become a good friend.

"It has been a pleasure to work with Andrew and everyone at St Mirren wishes him the very best in his future."

The club thanks Andrew for all his contributions in his time at St Mirren and are happy to have played a part in his coaching development. We wish him well for his future career.

The recruitment process for Andrew's replacement is underway and we will update supporters in due course.

Stav Nahmani excited to get started after arriving in Scotland

Stav Nahmani is excited to get started after finally arriving at St Mirren.

The 20-year-old had agreed to join Saints last month on a season-long loan from Israeli side Maccabi Haifa, but the wait for a visa meant the forward only arrived in Paisley at the weekend.

He met up with his teammates for the first time this morning at the St Mirren Training Academy and is raring to go.

I feel very good and I am excited to join the club," Stav told stmirren.com

"I want to work hard, help the team as much as I can and score goals. I hope we can have a successful season

"When I heard about the interest and found out more about the club I really wanted to join. I know Ryan Strain from Maccabi Haifa where we played together so that will be very helpful for me to settle in."

When the signing was announced, manager Stephen Robinson praised Stav's work ethic and is looking forward to working with him.

The manager said: "He’s got a great work ethic and he gives us real raw pace running in behind.

"We hope he can add goals to our team and pace in the forward areas. He’s a real exciting one that can play in a couple of areas across the forward areas."

Saints defeated in opening Viaplay Cup match

St Mirren were defeated in their opening Viaplay Cup match at Montrose. Rory McAllister's second-half goal was enough to give the hosts a 1-0 win in the opening Group H match.

Saints had chances to level, but ultimately weren't good enough to take anything from the game and will now be aiming for three wins in the remaining three matches to have a chance of qualifying for the next round.

Manager Stephen Robinson handed competitive debuts to summer signings Zach Hemming, Conor McMenamin and Mikael Mandron.

But it was the hosts who had the first real opportunity of the match when a header from the half-way line caught out the Saints defence and allowed Kane Hester the opportunity to run clear on goal. Charles Dunne did well to use his pace to catch up with the Montrose forward and did enough to put him off as he shot into the arms of Hemming.

Hester was then denied by Dunne just before the half-hour mark after the forward was found inside the six-yard box by Rory McAllister. Hester, Montrose's record signing when he signed this summer, got a flick on the ball in from the left, but the Saints defender was there to turn it behind.

Saints' best chance to open the scoring came with five minutes remaining in the first-half. A corner kick was headed out only as far as Kiltie on the edge of the area and his strike was pushed away by Gill. The Gable Endies goalkeeper was up quick to gather the rebound to deny Kiltie and Mandron as both charged in.

The home side hit the front on 58 minutes after catching Saints on the break. It came after Montrose goalkeeper Gill gathered a corner and launched the ball forward for Mateus Machado. He fed the ball for Hester inside the area before the forward turned and found strike partner McAllister alone at the back post with the experienced frontman firing into the net from close-range.

Despite the set back, the Buddies had an immediate opportunity to equalise when a long throw from Declan Gallagher broke inside the area with Kiltie and Alex Gogic in the immediate vicinity. One of them got a foot on it but knocked over the bar.

Saints had another big chance to level on 65 minutes when Kiltie's brilliant low ball across the face had beaten Gill. Mandron and Greive were sliding in but neither could get the touch it needed to be turned in to the net.

Saints were agonisingly close to the equaliser with less than 15 minutes remaining. Kiltie's strike was saved by Gill but he could only push it into the air and it looked like it may fall into net. Mandron was ready to nod into the empty net, but Montrose's veteran defender Sean Dillon managed to get there first and head over.

Substitute Toyosi Olusanya's trickery won the Buddies a free-kick on the edge of the box in the final moments of the match. To the frustration of the away support, the referee's whistle denied advantage when Mark O'Hara finished into the bottom corner from 20 yards. It was then Caolan Boyd-Munce who stepped up to take the free-kick, but Montrose managed to block and then clear to hold on and claim the win in Group H.

Mark O'Hara named as club captain

Mark O’Hara has been named as our new club captain ahead of the 2023/24 season.

The 2022/23 St Mirren Player of the Year takes up the armband on a permanent basis after filling in on a number of occasions last season.

The 27-year-old will be supported by Marcus Fraser who has been named vice captain.

Speaking on taking up the full captaincy, Mark told stmirren.com: 'It’s a huge honour.

I’ve loved every minute I’ve been at the club and the club means a lot to me and my family. It’s a privilege to be the captain.

"It’s an experienced dressing room with a lot of big characters and a lot of us push in the same direction. There’s a lot of boys you can go to for advice and help in the team and I think that’s why we’ve been successful. Hopefully we can continue that."

Manager Stephen Robinson praised Mark’s leadership and said: "Mark is a great leader and a great ambassador for St Mirren Football Club and proud to wear the armband.

"He was captain for large spells last year when Joe Shaughnessy wasn’t in the team.

He’s the perfect example to every player. He goes about his business very quietly, he has an assuredness about him and he has the respect of every player at the club."

On Marcus Fraser taking on the role of vice captain, the manager also added: "Marcus brings a wealth of experience and is another guy who is very well respected in the dressing room and with the coaching staff.

"There are four or five boys who lead the dressing room and I think Mark and Marcus are fantastic at that."
