Defeat in final pre-season friendly

St Mirren's final pre-season match ended in defeat as two late goals gave Morton victory.

The Buddies dominated the opening hour or so but couldn't find the net. And two goals in two minutes late in the half saw the hosts win.

Saints first real chance came on 12 minutes with Alex Gogic rose the highest to meet Ryan Strain's corner only for the header to be brilliantly saved by Morton stopper Ryan Mullen.

Ethan Sutherland forced the Morton goalkeeper into another good stop with his half-volley from inside the area tipped over the bar on 30 minutes. Saints should have scored three minutes later but Toyosi Olusanya crashed his close-range header off the bar.

The home side's best chance of the half came three minutes before the interval when Robbie Muirhead's bullet free-kick from distance flew just over the bar from around 30 yards from goal.

Stephen Robinson made a triple change at the interval with new boy Conor McMenamin on for his first taste of Saints action as well as Richard Taylor and Caolan Boyd-Munce. They replaced Marcus Fraser, Ethan Sutherland and Alex Greive.

Morton were inches away from taking the lead a little over 10 minutes into the second-half when Robbie Crawford flicked an effort just by the post.

O'Hara came closest to finding our opener not long after the hour mark, but his strike was blocked by the face of the Morton goalkeeper.

The hosts would take the lead heading into the final 10 minutes of the match after they were awarded a spot-kick. A long ball over the top caught out the Saints defence and Zach Hemming clashed with a Morton forward which saw referee David Munro point to the spot. Muirhead stepped up and fired home. Morton added a quickfire second with McGrattan slotting home less than two minutes after the opener.

Mikael Mandron joins St Mirren on two-year deal

St Mirren Football Club is delighted to announce the signing of Mikael Mandron on a two-year contract subject to clearance.

The French forward joins Saints following the expiry of his contract at fellow cinch Premiership side Motherwell.

The 28-year-old has spent most of his career in England with spells at the likes of Sunderland, Wigan, Colchester United, Crewe Alexandra and Gillingham before making the move up north with Motherwell in January 2023.

It comes after the announcement that Northern Ireland international Conor McMenamin joined the club yesterday afternoon.

Speaking to stmirren.com, Mikael said: "I feel great. I'm very happy to be here.

"I know what the league is about and I know how football is played here. I've really enjoyed life and football in Scotland so that was a big reason for me joining.

I'll bring experience and I'm an honest, hard-working player. I think I'll bring good energy to the squad as well and hopefully I can bring goals and wins to the team."

Manager Stephen Robinson said: "We’re delighted to welcome Mikael to the club.

"We’ve searched for a target man all summer to replace Curtis Main and we feel he’ll be a good replacement for Curtis. He’s someone I’ve watched at both Crewe and Gillingham and he’ll bring us experience and a real physical presence.

"We have a lot of quick forwards in the likes of Alex Greive, Toyosi Olusanya, Stav Nahamani, Conor McMenamin, Lewis Jamieson and Kieran Offord and we feel Mikael will be the perfect foil for those types of players.

"He had a difficult time at Motherwell with a niggling injury but we’re confident he will play a big part for us going forward."

Northern Ireland international Conor McMenamin joins St Mirren

St Mirren Football Club is delighted to announce the signing of Northern Ireland international Conor McMenamin, subject to clearance, on a two-year deal with the club holding the option of a further year.

The 27-year-old joins from NIFL Premiership side Glentoran for an undisclosed fee. We'd like to thank Glentoran for their professionalism in getting the deal done.

Conor made 109 appearances for Glens after joining in January 2021 and made 67 goal contributions (42 goals and 25 assists). That came after a spell at Cliftonville between 2018-2021 where he netted 25 times in 72 matches. He also gained European football experience at both Glentoran and Cliftonville, playing in Europa League and Europa Conference League qualifying.

The versatile player received his first Northern Ireland call-up in June 2022 and has since been capped by the national side six times which included substitute appearances in their recent UEFA Euro Qualifying matches against Denmark and Kazakhstan.

Speaking to stmirren.com, Conor spoke of his delight at finally getting the deal done. He said: "I’m really looking forward to it.

"It’s been a long few weeks back-and-forth, and I’m really happy to have it over the line. I can’t wait to get going.

"The manager wants me to be who I am and play the way I can play. He knows my strengths and I’m going to try and bring my strengths to the team.

It’s a good league with a lot of good teams here. It’s a really competitive league and hopefully I can hit the ground running."

Manager Stephen Robinson was thrilled to capture the 27-year-old and praised Conor and his agents for their willingness to get the move sealed.

"It’s been a protracted negotiation but I have to pay a lot of credit to Conor himself and his agent Brian Adair and Keith Gillespie," the manager said.

"They made the deal work by taking a little bit less and sacrificing their agency fee and less wages than initially agreed. That shows a real desire to come to St Mirren.

We’re excited to have him. He’s arguably been the best player in the NIFL for two or three seasons now and was highly sought after. We’ve worked very hard for him and credit to the agents and the player. It’s really refreshing to see an attitude where money wasn’t everything to make the deal work and honesty from an agent.

We’ve signed a very good footballer that can play in numerous positions. He can play right through the middle, as a wing-back and in behind the striker, so we’ve got a really versatile player who can score goals and create chances.

"In certain games last year, we lacked a wee bit of brilliance where someone can score out of nothing. We're hopeful he’s the little spark you need sometimes in games like that."

Greg Kiltie at the double in Saints win at Dumbarton

Our pre-season preparations continued with a 3-0 win over Dumbarton.

Greg Kiltie scored a first-half double with Ryan Strain rounding off a good pre-season workout for Stephen Robinson's men.

Alex Greive was inches away from putting us in front at the Dumbarton Stadium with just five minutes on the clock when he clipped just wide of the far post.

Kiltie was inches away from putting us ahead on 14 minutes when he arrowed a low drive just wide from the edge of the area. But it would be the midfield man that made it 1-0 just a few minutes later as he curled an effort into the far corner of the net at the second attempt after his first strike was blocked.

Toyosi Olusanya had the ball in the net three minutes later when he got on the end of Strain's low ball from the right. The forward - who netted the only goal in Saturday's win over Linfield - slid in at the back post to meet the cross, but the linesman flagged for offside.

Kiltie added his and Saints' second on 37 minutes when he finished through the legs of Dumbarton goalkeeper Harry Broun after being slipped in by Strain. And the Australian international would get himself on the scoresheet two minutes before the interval with Broun unable to stop his ball sneaking in at the near post.

Strain had our best chance in the second-half just before the hour mark when he clipped the bar with a free-kick right on the edge of the box.

Saints had further opportunities to add a fourth in the final few minutes with Lewis Jamieson heading wide of the target and Ethan Sutherland sliding an effort agonisingly by the post.
