St Mirren delighted to announce Stephen Robinson as new manager

St Mirren Football Club is delighted to confirm that Stephen Robinson is our new manager.

Stephen has agreed a two-and-a-half-year deal with the club - joining from English League One Morecambe FC.

He will be joined by Morecambe first-team coach Diarmuid O’Carroll who becomes his assistant manager.

Stephen will be joined by assistant Diarmuid O'Carroll.

A well-known face in Scottish Football, Stephen is best remembered for a three-year spell at fellow cinch Premiership side Motherwell where he was manager for 169 matches. At Motherwell, he reached the League and Scottish Cup finals in 2017/18 and achieved a third-place finish in the 2019/20 season which secured Europa League football for the Steelmen.

As well as Motherwell and Morecambe, Stephen also spent time as manager of Oldham Athletic.

As a player, he made 448 appearances in spells at Tottenham, AFC Bournemouth, Preston North End and Luton Town as well as being capped seven times for Northern Ireland.

On his appointment, Stephen said: "It's an absolute honour that St Mirren have come in and were willing to pay the compensation.

"It came out of the blue and when I spoke to the guys at the club it really impressed me what they are trying to do.

"We spoke in-depth about where we can take the club and there's real exciting times ahead.

"With the foundations that have already been built by Jim [Goodwin] it's up to me to take them on and build on what's already been done."

St Mirren Chief Executive Tony Fitzpatrick said: "We are all delighted to welcome Stephen as the new manager of St Mirren.

"Stephen fits the profile of what we are looking for in a manager.

"He has great experience of the Scottish game and had good success on the park with Motherwell which saw him reach the finals of both the League and Scottish Cups as well a third-place finish and qualification for the Europa League.

"Stephen also did a tremendous job of developing young players at Motherwell which was an important consideration for us with the St Mirren Youth Academy one of the main pillars of our football club.

"We would like to thank Morecambe FC for their co-operation in getting this deal completed."

St Mirren Chairman John Needham said: "We are excited to name Stephen as our new manager.

"At such a vital stage of the season it was crucial that we moved quickly to get the best candidate in place, and we are thrilled to welcome Stephen to the club.

"The board of directors must give great credit to Tony Fitzpatrick who ensured there were a number of great options for us to consider following Jim Goodwin’s departure."

Up Next: Dundee v St Mirren (23rd Feb)

Stephen Robinson takes charge of St Mirren for the first time as Saints take on Dundee at the Kilmac Stadium.

The Buddies maintained their unbeaten run in 2022 after Greg Kiltie's late goal earned Saints a share of the spoils in a 1-1 draw at Livingston on Saturday.

Saints have won six and drawn two of their eight matches in all competitions since the turn of the year and sit in seventh place in the cinch Premiership.

A win on Wednesday would move the Buddies up to fourth in the cinch Premiership, while three points for Dundee would see them move off the foot of the table in the battle for survival.

Dundee go into Wednesday's match on the back of a spirited performance against league leaders Celtic on Sunday. The Dark Blues were minutes away from snatching a surprise point at Celtic Park which would have moved them to within a point of St Johnstone in the relegation play-off spot.

Before Sunday's defeat, Dundee had only lost one of their last six matches - a 2-1 loss at home to Ross County. They defeated Dumbarton and Peterhead in the Scottish Cup as well as picking up a 2-1 win against Hearts at Tynecastle in cinch Premiership action. There were also 0-0 draws with Dundee United and St Johnstone.

Jamie Langfield thanks players after Livingston draw

The person that is coming into this job is one lucky person because they are going to inherit a really good squad. They've been brilliant and I'd like to thank them for that."

Interim Jamie Langfield thanked the players after today's draw with Livingston.

Kiltie strike earns 10-men draw at Livingston

A late Greg Kiltie goal saw 10 man St Mirren take a share of the spoils and extend their unbeaten run in 2022 to eight matches.

An own-goal from Joe Shaughnessy had put Livingston in the driving seat for all three points. But Saints midfielder Kiltie nabbed his third goal in two games to ensure a point for the managerless Buddies.

Jamie Langfield and Allan McManus took charge of the team following the news this morning of the departure of Jim Goodwin and Lee Sharp to Aberdeen. The interim management side - assisted by Andy Webster and Michael McArdle from the St Mirren Youth Academy - chose the same starting eleven that defeated Kelty Hearts in the Scottish Cup last weekend.

The first opportunity of the game went Saints way after a neat exchange between Connor Ronan and Jordan Jones saw the latter dance his way into the box but fire into the side-netting on eight minutes. Bruce Anderson had the first chance for the home side on 13 minutes after playing a one-two with Nicky Devlin.

Livingston had the better of the first-half without creating too much to worry Saints. Ayo Obileye headed over from a corner on 21 minutes while Jason Holt curled into the hands of Saints goalkeeper Jak Alnwick seven minutes before the interval.

David Martindale's outfit came out with more intent after the break and Joel Nouble should have done better with a chance on 54 minutes. Alan Forrest's strike deflected into the path of the striker who got it all wrong as he scuffed wide.

The home side would take the lead just a minute later when Anderson got on the end of a Devlin cross from the right side. The striker's first attempt cracked off the post with the rebound unfortunately coming off Shaughnessy, finding its way into the back of the net.

Saints hadn't got going in the second-half and could have been two behind just before the hour mark with Jack Fitzwater having an effort blocked from close-range.

Jamie Langfield had made three changes to try and find a way back into the match with Jay Henderson, Curtis Main and Scott Tanser all introduced over a 12 minute spell. And just two minutes after the latter had been introduced the Buddies were level. Tanser's deep corner was met by the head of Marcus Fraser at the far post where he headed back across the face of goal. Richard Tait miscontrolled but it fell nicely to Kiltie who drilled home from the edge of the area to draw us level.

Saints were reduced to 10 men when Charles Dunne was shown a straight red card for a supposed foul on Livingston substitute Sebastian Soto. It looked a harsh decision by referee Willie Collum with Dunne incredulous at receiving his marching order. Livi almost immediately took the lead again from the resulting free-kick after Forrest's ball in came off Fraser and had to be clawed wide by Alnwick.

The Buddies managed to see the game out and take a point back to Paisley.

Jim Goodwin departs for Aberdeen

St Mirren Football Club can confirm that Jim Goodwin has departed the club to join Aberdeen FC as their new manager.

The board of directors and everyone at St Mirren would like to thank Jim for the role he has played at the club since taking over as manager in June 2019.

St Mirren Chief Executive Tony Fitzpatrick said: "I would like to place on record my thanks to Jim Goodwin for all he has done in his time at St Mirren.

"Jim raised the bar during his time at the club – reaching both the semi-finals of the League and Scottish Cups last season as well as achieving our highest top-flight finish in over 30 years. Jim leaves us challenging for a top six position and in the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup.

"I know leaving St Mirren was a difficult decision for Jim and while we are disappointed to lose him, Aberdeen met a release clause within his contract and we respect his decision to move on.

"Jim has been a fantastic ambassador for our club and we wish him every success for the future."

We can also confirm that a deal is in place for Assistant Manager Lee Sharp to join Jim at Aberdeen. We thank Lee for his efforts in his time at St Mirren and wish him well for the future.

An interim coaching team has been put in place with Jamie Langfield working alongside Head of Youth Development Allan McManus, Michael McArdle and Andy Webster to take charge of first-team matters until a new manager is appointed.

The St Mirren board has already begun the formal process of recruiting a new manager and will provide a further update in due course.
