Saints ran out of steam says Stephen Robinson

The character is here in abundance, I think we just ran out of steam."

The manager gives his thoughts after our Scottish Cup exit.

Battling Buddies exit Scottish Cup after defeat at Tynecastle

St Mirren exited the Scottish Cup at the quarter-final stage following a battling 4-2 defeat at Tynecastle.

The Buddies battled from 2-0 down to go level with Eamonn Brophy and Connor Ronan netting. But Hearts substitute Aaron McEneff scored within 30 seconds of coming off the bench before setting up Ellis Simms in the final few minutes to see the Saints exit at the last eight.

A noisy travelling support of around 1500 had travelled through to Gorgie to back the Buddies and Stephen Robinson made one change to the side that defeated Dundee on Wednesday night with the returning Jak Alnwick back in place of Dean Lyness.

Brophy had the first opportunity of an action packed quarter-final, driving into the arms of Hearts goalkeeper Craig Gordon on seven minutes. Less than sixty seconds later Alnwick was forced into his first save as he got two strong hands on a Barrie McKay strike from the edge of the area.

McKay was instrumental in the Hearts opener. The winger drove in from the left and played a perfect ball for Ellis Simms. The forward struggled to get the ball out of his feet with Alnwick blocking, but the Baningime was quickest to react - knocking into the net to put the hosts ahead.

Hearts doubled their advantage just before the half-hour mark. In fairness to Hearts it was a well worked move which ended when Liam Boyce knocked the ball wide to Ben Woodburn and the forward's first time pass was met by the oncoming Peter Haring who swept home from close-range to make it 2-0.

It was a huge blow to Stephen Robinson's side who had been playing fairly well, but all wasn't lost as Saints pulled one back seven minutes later. Alnwick's long pass was picked up on by Richard Tait. The defender burst forward before playing a wonderful ball into Brophy with the striker knocking beyond Gordon to half the deficit.

After keeping Hearts at bay at the start of the second 45 with Alnwick doing well to turn away a deflected Woodburn strike, St Mirren grew in confidence as they searched for an equaliser. Gordon made two big saves just after the hour mark to deny Jordan Jones and Greg Kiltie.

Saints would drew level on 62 minutes when Connor Ronan added another incredible strike to his collection. The Irishman has made a habit of scoring wonder-goals since joining on loan from Wolves and this could be his best yet after he whipped into the top corner from 25 yards to make it 2-2.

But the home side would go back in front six minutes later when substitute Aaron McEneff diverted a deflection into the net. And Hearts made it four with five minutes remaining when Simms headed a McEneff cross beyond Alnwick to end Saints hope of a trip to Hampden next month.

Award-winning Street Stuff partnership renewed

We've renewed our partnership with Renfrewshire Council for the delivery of the award-winning programme, Street Stuff.

The renewed partnership agrees delivery of the programme for the next two years, with the option to extend further.

Delivering a range of free multi-sport, gaming and educational activities six days a week, the Street Stuff team aim to offer young people across Renfrewshire the opportunity to access exercise and social activities which they may otherwise not have the chance to take part in.

The programme also hosts holiday camps throughout the year, ensuring that children and young people from age 5 to 16 have an outlet during the school holidays and a free healthy meal is provided to everyone who attends.

The project runs in partnership between Renfrewshire Council, St Mirren Football Club, Police Scotland, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and Engage Renfrewshire.

Alongside multi-sport activities such as football, basketball, and gaming sessions delivered on board specially designed youth buses, the Street Stuff programme also offers a range of educational activities around local issues and creates pathways to employment through training and volunteering, with many former participants progressing to employment within Street Stuff, or with other local partners.

Tony Fitzpatrick, Chief Executive of St Mirren Football Club said: "We are delighted to continue our partnership with Renfrewshire Council, Police Scotland, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and Engage Renfrewshire for the delivery of the Street Stuff programme.

"Street Stuff has played a huge role in our local community over the last 14 years since its inception and by providing the activities we do, we really see massive health and social benefits for the young people of Renfrewshire.

"The number of awards it has received tells its own story in terms of both its success and the efforts of those who take part and run it. We are really excited about the continuation of this programme."

Councillor Marie McGurk, Convener of Renfrewshire Council's Communities, Housing and Planning Policy Board said: "We're extremely proud of our Street Stuff programme and I am delighted that we have renewed our partnership with St Mirren FC for delivery of the programme for another two years, with the option to extend further.

"Supporting our Community Learning and Development Strategy, Street Stuff empowers young people to take part in various physical and educational activities, with the opportunity to undertake further training and volunteering that will help them influence positive changes in their lives and their communities.

"Alongside regular evening activities, Street Stuff also offers holiday camps meaning children and young people are still able to access exercise and spend time with their friends when they are not in school. Our spring holiday camp timetable is now available so make sure you're among the first to sign up."

Tait looking to help create lasting memories for supporters

Richard Tait wants to play his part in St Mirren reaching Hampden as he seeks to create lasting memories for supporters.

The Buddies face Hearts at Tynecastle tomorrow with a place in the last four of the Scottish Cup up for grabs.

The 32-year-old was part of the Saints side that reached two semi-finals last season, but the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic meant both matches were played in an empty national stadium.

With an opportunity to return to Hampden with crowds back, Tait would love to give the fans that chance of a memorable day out.

I think the last two semi-finals we got to didn’t really feel like semi-finals because there were no fans there,” Tait told the press this afternoon.

"I know that probably sounds a bit silly, but they just didn’t feel right. If we can get back to Hampden after this game, that would be a great reward for the fans.

"Fans remember days like that, especially little kids. They’ll always remember going to Hampden to watch St Mirren in a semi-final or final. I think that’s probably the most important thing for us - to get past this stage and hopefully create good memories for the fans."

Saints come up against a Hearts side they have failed to beat this season and Tait is under no illusion of the challenge that lies ahead.

But the right-back says they will good to Tynecastle in buoyant spirit after Wednesday night's win over Dundee in the cinch Premiership.

It’s going to be tough," Tait continued.

"Hearts have been our bogey team this year. They’ve beaten us three times in the league so hopefully in the cup it’s a bit different and it’s our time to win a match.

"Cup runs can breed belief in the squad. If we can get through to the next stage that can translate onto the league form as well.

"The lads are full of belief at the moment. We showed that in the Dundee game, we kept going and believed we were going to win it.

"It was really good to get that first win in awhile. The lads in the changing room afterwards were buzzing."

Up Next: Hearts v St Mirren (12th Mar)

There's a place in the Scottish Cup semi-finals up for grabs when St Mirren take on Hearts on Saturday.

Saints reached the last eight of the Scottish Cup with a 2-0 win away to Ayr United in January before defeating Kelty Hearts 4-0 at the SMiSA Stadium in the Fifth Round last month.

The Buddies come into Saturday's match after a last-gasp win at Dundee on Wednesday night. Connor Ronan's stoppage time goal gave Stephen Robinson his first win as St Mirren manager and kept up the push for top six.

Hearts' path to the Scottish Cup quarters saw them defeat Auchinleck Talbot 5-0 in January. The Fifth Round wasn't as plain-sailing with it taking penalty kicks for the Jambos to see off Livingston in the last round after a goalless 120 minutes.

Robbie Neilson's side go into the match on the back of a 2-2 draw with Dundee United at Tannadice in the cinch Premiership last Saturday.

Previous

Hearts have come out on top in the three meetings between the sides this season - winning 2-0 twice and 2-1 on the other occasion.

The last time the two sides met in cup competition was on that famous day in 2013 in which St Mirren defeated Hearts 3-2 at Hampden Park to win the League Cup.

The two last met in the Scottish Cup in 2012. St Mirren drew 2-2 at Tynecastle thanks to goals from Graham Carey and Nigel Hasselbaink, but Hearts won the replay at the SMiSA Stadium.

Bobby Madden is the referee on Saturday night. Frank Connor and Alastair Mather are the linesmen, while Colin Steven is the fourth official.

We were patient and got our just rewards. A great way to win a football match."

Saints leave it late but take deserved three points in Dundee

Connor Ronan's last-gasp header won St Mirren all three points at Dundee and moved Saints to within a point of fourth place.

Stephen Robinson headed to the city of discovery in search of his first win as Buddies boss. Despite being well on top, it looked like he would have to settle for just a point - only for Ronan to get his head on the end of a super Jay Henderson cross deep into stoppage time to take the points back to Paisley.

After an uneventful opening half-hour in which neither side really created anything, Saints had two good opportunities to open the scoring in the space of two minutes.

The first saw Eamonn Brophy slip the ball down the left channel where it found Jordan Jones in acres of space. Dundee goalkeeper Harry Sharp was hesitant in coming for it and Jones - looking to take advantage of that hesitation - aimed to lift the ball over him, but put straight into his hands.

Two minutes later Greg Kiltie did well to not only keep the ball in play, but then play it across the area where it found an unmarked Brophy. The Saints striker took a touch to steady himself before seeing his strike blocked on the line by Zeno Ibsen Rossi.

Dundee weren't without their openings but didn't trouble Dean Lyness with Jordan McGhee and Cammy Kerr both firing over from the same range in quick succession.

After a goalless opening 45, the home side started the second-half stronger with Ibsen Rossi's header across the face of goal needed to be cleared over the bar by Ronan with Declan McDaid lurking at the back post. Niall McGinn then fizzed a dangerous looking ball across the face of the Saints box with no takers in Dark Blue.

Saints took a grip of the game and passed up a golden opportunity to take the lead just after the hour mark. Brophy had two efforts blocked before the ball landed perfectly for Jones who somehow slammed over from just a few yards out.

The Buddies had a huge appeal for a penalty five minutes later when Scott Tanser's cross from the left appeared to strike the hand of Dundee defender Ryan Sweeney. Referee John Beaton was unmoved.

With the clock running down, Brophy went close to putting St Mirren ahead with less than five minutes of time to go as his header from a Jones cross drifted agonisingly wide.

It appeared it was going to be just one of those nights for the Buddies with John Beaton disallowing a Saints goal on 90 minutes after Richard Tait had nodded home from a corner.

But Saints would have one last chance with substitute Henderson - fresh from being named in the Scotland U21 squad this morning - sending in a perfect cross from the right which Ronan got his head on the end of to sent the travelling support into raptures as the race for a top six place heats up with three games to go until the split.

Jay Henderson called up to Scotland U21s

Jay Henderson has been named in the Scotland Under-21 squad for their upcoming UEFA U21 Championship matches against Turkey and Kazakhstan later this month.

The 20-year-old St Mirren Academy Graduate made his first-team debut last April and has since gone on to make 24 appearances for the Buddies.

He scored his first senior goal in January - opening the scoring with a stunning strike in our 2-1 win over Dundee United.

Everyone at St Mirren is delighted for Jay and wish him all the best when he goes away with the U21s.
