Use of Pyrotechnics

Supporter safety is a key priority for all clubs and we at St Mirren Football Club are committed to doing everything we can to ensure that the match day experience is safe and enjoyable.

One of the most dangerous things we have to deal with is pyrotechnic articles such as smoke bombs and flares in the stadium and we'd ask that you assist us to look after you by not bringing such articles with you to any matches home or away. These articles can cause severe burns, damage to hearing or breathing difficulties and the hazardous chemical used is known to be carcinogenic and their use is especially distressing for groups such as small children and those who can't easily move away when pyrotechnics are activated.

Experience shows that when a pyrotechnic is activated in a crowd there is often a movement away from the immediate area which can cause panic and disorientation and which creates a risk of slips and trips or crushing for those nearby.

Please be in no doubt that these articles are unpleasant and potentially life-threatening to be around - they are also illegal at football matches - and being caught with them will result in exclusion from The SMISA Stadium and a possible criminal conviction as well as potential financial penalties for the club.

Up Next: Motherwell v St Mirren (15th Feb)

St Mirren return to cinch Premiership action with a midweek trip to Fir Park to face Motherwell.

It's a rearranged fixture with the original - due to take place in December - having been postponed due to extensive damage and flooding at Fir Park.

Saints exited the Scottish Cup on Saturday with a loss at Celtic, but the margin of defeat was harsh on Stephen Robinson's men with Celtic scoring four goals after Richard Taylor was sent off for the Buddies.

Motherwell also dropped out of the cup with a 3-1 defeat to Raith Rovers at Stark's Park on Saturday. That result saw the Steelmen part ways with manager Steven Hammell and assistant Brian Kerr. Motherwell Lead Development coach Stuart Kettlewell will take interim charge of the side.

St Mirren are in sixth place in the cinch Premiership having won two of our last three league matches and would move up to fourth with a win on Wednesday night.

Motherwell have lost their last three league matches but three points on Wednesday would see the Steelmen into ninth place.

The two meetings between the sides this season both came at the SMiSA Stadium with each side boasting a win apiece.

Motherwell visited the SMiSA Stadium just over two weeks ago with Curtis Main scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win for Saints.

1-0 was also the scoreline when Motherwell defeated St Mirren in July when Kevin Van Veen netted from the penalty spot.

Our last win at Fir Park was in December 2020 when Jamie McGrath scored in a 1-0 victory for the Buddies.

Manager says scoreline harsh on Saints

The manager says the scoreline wasn't a fair reflection of the game as Saints were beaten in the Scottish Cup.

10 man Saints exit the cup at Celtic Park

St Mirren exited the Scottish Cup with defeat at Celtic Park, but the 5-1 scoreline was harsh on Saints who - for 75 minutes - competed well with Celtic until a red card for Richard Taylor.

Taylor was one of two changes made by manager Stephen Robinson as he replaced Charles Dunne who dropped out with a hamstring injury. Declan Gallagher came in for Greg Kiltie in the other change from last weekend's 1-0 loss to Hibernian.

Trevor Carson was called into action early on with the Saints stopper making a strong two-handed save to push away Jota's effort on two minutes after the Portuguese winger has jinked his way into the St Mirren box.

Saints looked to hit Celtic on the counter on a couple of occasions early on, but it was Celtic who came closest to the opener in the first 10 minutes when Daizen Maeda's attempted cross sailed over the head of Carson, but came back off the post.

The home side were forced into an early change when Kyogo was came off with an injury to be replaced by Liel Abada. That saw Maeda moved to centre-forward and that shift of position would pay dividends for the the hosts as the Japanese forward put them ahead on 16 minutes. Maeda was on hand just six yards from goal to slide home from Aaron Mooy's low ball across the face of the box.

Saints almost levelled just two minutes later when Greive did well to turn Carl Starfelt in the box and his effort looked like it was heading for the far corner of the net, only for Cameron Carter-Vickers to head clear the danger. Carter-Vickers was the man alert again for the hosts on 33 minutes when his vital interception denied Greive the chance to go one-on-one with Joe Hart in the Celtic goal.

St Mirren were also forced into a change a few minutes before half-time when Greive couldn't continue after going down with an ankle injury. He was replaced by Tony Watt. Alex Gogic had a go from 20 yards in the final minutes of the half, but his effort flew over while Celtic had a big chance for a second before the interval only for Jota to flick Mooy's cross over.

Celtic almost grabbed a second six minutes into the second-half when a low Alastair Johnston ball across from the right came off Marcus Fraser and crashed off the post before Saints managed to clear.

Saints were making it difficult for Celtic and almost had a big opportunity to level just after the hour mark when Keanu Baccus broke forward and slipped in Watt down the left-side. The forward cut into the box but had his shot blocked.

The game completely changed with 15 minutes remaining when Saints were reduced to 10 men and Celtic were awarded a penalty following a lengthy VAR check. Taylor was shown a red card for a handball in the box and Reo Hatate stepped up to score from 12 yards.

Celtic added a third five minutes later when substitute Oh scored from close-range. Carson had initially saved Callum McGregor's effort but the ball fell to Oh who knocked home from just a few yards out.

Saints didn't give up and pulled a goal back on 87 minutes from the penalty spot. Greg Kiltie was fouled by Carl Starfelt and O'Hara slammed home from the spot. But Celtic would add to the scoring with Matt O'Riley and Hatate scoring stunning efforts in the final few minutes to put a harsh reflection on the final scoreline.

Richard Tait injury update

Manager Stephen Robinson this morning confirmed that Richard Tait has suffered an injury setback and could be set for a further six-eight weeks on the sidelines.

The Saints defender hasn't featured since the end of October and underwent surgery for a groin issue in November.

Speaking to the press, the manager said: "Richard Tait is having more surgery on Saturday which again is a blow for us. We think we will lose Richard for another six to eight weeks.

"It is not the same issue but it is the same area, it is a groin problem. It is frustrating for Richard, he is a little bit down about it as well, he was on the verge of coming back.

"It is difficult, the mental side of football that everybody doesn't see, so it is a difficult one for him, but we will be there to try to make sure he gets back as quick as possible."

The Buddies secured their place in the last 16 with a penalty shoot-out win over Dundee at the SMiSA Stadium. A goalless 90 minutes and extra-time meant the match had to be decided by spot-kicks with Trevor Carson saving all three of Dundee's efforts, while Mark O'Hara, Alex Greive and Greg Kiltie all netted for Saints.
