Reaction: Jim Goodwin Post-Aberdeen (29th Feb 2020)

Jim Goodwin gives his thoughts on a disappointing night for Saints as they are knocked out of the William Hill Scottish Cup by Aberdeen.

Match Report: St Mirren 0-2 Aberdeen

Saints' hopes of a trip to Hampden and Scottish Cup glory came to an end when they lost to Aberdeen.

It was a pretty forgettable 90 minutes, one of the few moments of genuine quality producing an early goal as Lewis Ferguson scored a tremendous strike with the outside of his foot. Curtis Main thought he'd headed his side further in front after the break but it was ruled out for offside before Sam Cosgrove sealed victory with a late penalty on a disappointing evening for Saints fans and neutrals watching at home on BBC Scotland.

Saints with the side that secured a late win at Fir Park on Tuesday night, the in-form Jon Obika once again being partnered by Alex Jakubiak. Main led the Aberdeen attack with the prolific Cosgrove only on the bench.

The big forward headed wide from Dean Campbell's free-kick before the Dons took an early lead. Matty Kennedy's through ball found Ferguson at the edge of the box and he used the outside of his boot to produce a wonderful finish that Vaclav Hladky had no chance of stopping.

Anyone hoping that early flurry of excitement was to be the start of an exciting cup tie similar to Saints' defeat of Motherwell in the previous round was to be left sorely disappointed as both sides found it difficult to get going. While not entirely to blame, the wind and rain also wasn't doing anybody any favours - although it did nearly help Lee Hodson's cross loop into the net. The fullback's next cross forced a corner which Akin Famewo headed well wide.

There was some relief at the other end when Hladky failed to hold a Kennedy free-kick before his defence bailed him out – only fair since the goalie has done similar for his team-mates so often during his time with the club. There looked to be more trouble when Niall McGinn won the ball from Cammy MacPherson and bore down on goal, however ref Don Robertson felt the Saints youngster had been barged aside and gave a foul. In the final minute of a dire half MacPherson's free-kick caused problems in the Aberdeen box but Conor McCarthy couldn't quite dig the ball out from under his feet and Joe Lewis was able to gather it.

Jakubiak was replaced by Kyle McAllister at the break as Saints looked for an equaliser, an Obika header being turned behind for a corner. McAllister tried to thread the ball through for the striker but Lewis was able to gather it, however in attempting to keep pace with Obika Scott McKenna had pulled a muscle and had to be replaced by Mikey Devlin.

That blow didn't seem to disrupt the Dons too much and they looked to have doubled their lead when Main stooped to head Kennedy's cross past Hladky, however the flag was up for offside. The visitors seemed happy to sit deep and let Saints have plenty of possession but they didn't look too penetrating with it, a rare chance coming when Jamie McGrath stung the palms of Lewis from long range.

In a bid to change things, Saints boss Jim Goodwin handed Seifedin Chabbi his much anticipated Saints debut at the expense of MacPherson with Tony Andreu then coming on for Ilkay Durmus. Chabbi just failed to get onto the end of a McAllister cross, while Main didn't get quite enough on the end of a teasing delivery from McGinn. The striker was replaced by Craig Bryson before Cosgrove – who'd early replaced Campbell – found himself in a great position to finish the game off but could only fire wide.

It didn't matter as he made amends in stoppage time. As Cosgrove burst into the box, he was pushed by Saints skipper Foley and Mr Robertson wasted little time in pointing to the spot. Hladky may have a great record at saving penalties and he did guess correctly, however Cosgrove slotted it right into the bottom corner to seal his side's progress to the semi-finals.

Match Preview: St Mirren v Aberdeen (29th Feb)

St Mirren host Aberdeen in the William Hill Scottish Cup with a place in the semi-final up for grabs.

FORM

St Mirren - WWLDDD

Aberdeen - LWLWDL

Saints path to the quarter-finals has seen Jim Goodwin's side beat Broxburn Athletic in the fourth round and Motherwell in the fifth round.

The Buddies eventually sealed a comfortable 3-0 win over Broxburn Athletic in January with Jon Obika scoring either side of a Danny Mullen strike.

That win over Broxburn set up a fifth round clash with fellow Ladbrokes Premiership side Motherwell at the Simple Digital Arena. Motherwell took a first-half lead, but Alex Jakubiak's first goal for the Saints ensured a replay at Fir Park.

Despite Saints being 4-1 ahead at half-time in the replay, it would take penalty kicks to separate the two sides with Jamie McGrath, Kyle McAllister and Obika netting in the shoot-out as the Buddies progressed.

Aberdeen's route to the last eight has been fairly similar to that of Saints. The Dons needed an 86th minute Sam Cosgrove penalty to see off League One side Dumbarton at Pittodrie in January.

The Dons were then paired with Kilmarnock in the fifth round in an all Premiership clash. Derek McInnes' side were held 0-0 at Pittodrie with the game going to a replay.

The replay, which took place 24 hours after Saints' replay with Motherwell, was just as dramatic as St Mirren's as the Dons progressed in extra-time after a 4-3 win.

St Mirren come into tomorrow night's match on the back of an important three points against Motherwell in the Ladbrokes Premiership on Tuesday night. Despite Liam Donnelly giving Motherwell the lead, second-half goals from Jon Obika and Ilkay Durmus gave the Buddies their first league win of 2020.

Aberdeen, meanwhile, lost to Ross County at Pittodrie on Saturday. Curtis Main put Aberdeen 1-0 ahead, but the Dons were reduced to 10 men when Dean Campbell was given his marching order. County took advantage with Billy McKay scoring twice to consign Aberdeen to defeat.

PREVIOUS

Tomorrow's match will be the fourth meeting of the two this season.

Both sides have won one match each while the other ended in a draw.

Ilkay Durmus' early goal was enough to separate the teams in the first meeting of the season way back in August as the Buddies won 1-0 at the Simple Digital Arena.

Saints were narrowly beaten on their trip to Pittodrie in November as Aberdeen edged the match 2-1. Jon Obika had equalised for the Buddies after Sam Cosgrove had given the Dons an early lead. Niall McGinn put Derek McInnes' side back in front while Tony Andreu missed a late penalty for Saints.

The sides couldn't be separated when Aberdeen visited Paisley in January as the game finished 0-0 at the Simple Digital Arena.

St Mirren last faced Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup in 2018. Despite Gavin Reilly scoring his 21st goal of the season for the Buddies, Aberdeen would run out 4-1 winners thanks to goals from Adam Rooney, Ryan Christie (x2) and Gary Mackay-Steven.

TEAM NEWS

Gary MacKenzie, Kyle Magennis and Ryan Flynn all remain out for Saints.

Stephen McGinn has been back training for the Buddies but tomorrow's match could come too soon for the skipper.

MANAGER'S THOUGHTS

"It's all about giving the fans something to dream about.

"The fact we are in the quarter-final of the cup is great for everybody involved and no doubt there will be a great atmosphere on Saturday.

"The last time we played Aberdeen in the quarter-final of a cup while I was here was 2013 and we all know what happened then and hopefully this is another good omen.

"We've had good performances against Aberdeen already this season and we certainly have nothing to fear."

Visitor Information

  • Electronic Ticketing System

At the SMiSA Stadium we have an electronic ticketing system in place at the turnstiles.

The process of using the system is fairly straight-forward and easy to use:

    • On entering the turnstile you will see the ticket reader.
    • Place your match ticket (with the barcode or QR code facing upwards) or smartcard – into the aperture
    • Once the ticket/smartcard is accepted into the system the green light will illuminate and an audio alert will sound after which you should hear the turnstile being unlocked
    • Push the turnstile gate and enter the stadium as you normally would.

The whole process will only take a few seconds.

Please note that there will be stewards in attendance to help where required.

  • Street Parking on Matchday

The Club has been made aware of problems occasioned by inconsiderate parking in the area of Tannahill Road.

Seemingly supporters are parking despite the presence of double yellow lines and as a consequence local bus routes are also being blocked because streets in this area are narrow and fans are parking on both sides. People, many of whom are elderly, are having to walk from Greenhill Road to their homes because buses can’t get access.

Residents who have cars parked in driveways are experiencing similar difficulties getting their vehicles in and out. On being approached by local residents some supporters have been somewhat aggressive which could lead to confrontation.

St Mirren Football Club strives to be a good neighbour and we would ask that ALL supporters attending the stadium not only park in accordance with local parking restrictions but also give consideration to the needs of local residents by parking sensibly so as not to occasion an unnecessary obstruction.

  • Picking Up & Dropping Off by Car on Match Day

We are also aware of problems with patrons parking at the front of the Main Stand to pick up disabled supporters at the end of the game. This area is a 'no parking' zone on match days (with cones on the road) and has to be kept clear for emergency access. It is an inappropriate location for disabled spectator uplifts, as not only does it cause an obstruction on the road, it also causes a danger to pedestrians leaving the stadium.

Please note that the designated pick-up/drop off points are either in Drums Avenue or the two lay-byes on Ferguslie Park Avenue.

  • Finding the SMiSA Stadium

  • Getting to the SMiSA Stadium

    BY ROAD

Follow signs for Paisley & Glasgow Airport. Exit the M8 at Junction 29 (St James’ Interchange) which is just after Glasgow Airport turn off if travelling east to west. Be careful not to exit on to the A737 which is signposted for Irvine. It is best to stay in the middle lane when passing the Airport as this leads naturally to the St James’ Interchange exit.

At the interchange take the first left onto a dual carriageway with some football parks on the left hand side. Follow this road and after a sharp right hand bend you should now be in Greenock Road. Then take your first right on to Clark Street and drive to the end of the street which is the junction with Greenhill Road, turn left and you will see the stadium on the opposite side of the road.

Get train from Paisley Gilmour Street to Paisley St James – exit from the station is straight onto Greenhill Road where the stadium is facing you. To plan your journey by rail with Scotrail please click HERE.

    BY BUS

Most buses will stop at Paisley Cross or Mill Street, from both you will see the Paisley Town Hall. From the Town Hall cross the High Street towards the Piazza Shopping Centre, when acoss walk towards the town centre until you come to Gilmour Street. Turn right on to Gilmour Street and walk towards the railway station which is about 150 yards away. From there you can get train to Paisley St James or if you prefer to walk the following routes are advised by the police:

Home fans: cross road to the left on to St James Street – follow through up Underwood Road then turn right at Greenhill Road where stadium is 200 yards further along the road. Access to the Main Stand is from Greenhill Road and the South and West Stands will be accessed from Drums Avenue.

Away fans: cross road to Love Street continue up the street till you come to Albion Street where you will turn left. Follow Albion Street until you come to the junction with Greenock Road where you will turn right. Cross the road then walk about 200 yards before taking your first left on to Clark Street.
