Chairman's Update - March 2020

Tony Fitzpatrick Stand

Slowly but surely we are starting to make the stadium feel more like home.

As a board we felt that naming the stands would help with that ambition and we couldn’t think of a more appropriate way to start the process than celebrating Tony’s contribution to our club over the last 40 plus years by naming a stand after him. If anyone hasn’t seen the video where we ambushed him at the unveiling, I suggest you take a look.

We have rebranded the existing signs on the stand for now but will be installing more prominent signage during the close season.

St Mirren FC Charitable Foundation

The Foundation continues to grow and evolve and has been renamed to better reflect its status.

For the second year running Christmas dinner was provided by volunteers to ensure that people in need were not left eating Christmas dinner alone. This is just one example of the good work the foundation is doing as it continues to evolve.

One of the big fundraising events in the calendar is the Hunter Foundation Kilt Walk on April 26th. I would like to encourage all St.Mirren fans to take part in this great event and raise as much sponsorship money as possible. The Hunter foundation adds 50% to all monies raised so it is a great opportunity to assist the foundation raise funds that help stage events like the Christmas dinner.

If you are interested in taking part then please contact gayle.brannigan@stmirren.com or if you just want to make a donation you can do so here.

Rails in Vomitories

As a result of incidents at other stadiums we are having to increase the heights of the safety rails on top of the walls adjacent to the vomitories within the terracing. We are working on a design that will limit the impact on sight lines as much as possible while conforming to the new guidelines. Our plan is to have them installed before the end of the season so that people will be able to see if there is any impact on the view from their existing season ticket seat.

Shirt supplier and sponsor

Joma have been a great partner for the last three years, delivering quality products on time. We are delighted to announce that we have extended that contract for a further three years.

Skyview Capital have once again confirmed their continued support of the club as the main shirt sponsor for next season.

Energy Check have signed a three-year deal as short sponsor and will become our Official Energy Partners.

I would like to thank them all for their support.

Coronavirus

We receive regular updates from the SPFL on the latest guidelines and health recommendations and ensure that all senior staff are copied in and act on the guidelines contained within this information to minimise the risk of exposure to our staff and supporters.

We would like to reassure all our supporters that the club is in a strong financial position to deal with any eventuality that arises.

Further updates from the club on this will be available in due course.

Environment

We are constantly looking at ways we can be more environmentally friendly and with the change of all stadium and academy lighting to LED now complete we are now looking at other ways we can continue this evolution.

As part of their sponsorship deal Energy Check are carrying out assessments at the stadium and the academy to see how we can become more efficient with all our utilities.

The SMiSA clean up team do a great job cleaning up the terraces after matches. As a result of the knowledge gained by that SMiSA have researched and implemented a scheme to provide recycling bins in the vomitories in all stands to try to encourage fans to bin their rubbish and assist us with recycling.

Your help in ensuring this is a success will be much appreciated.

The Chairman

It has been an honour to be the first and last individual to own a majority shareholding in our football club. We have achieved a lot of positive things in the past 3 and a half years and I couldn’t have scripted a better end to that era than the 4-4 draw with Motherwell in the Scottish cup. That game epitomised the passion and drama that I would love to see every week.

Since we took over in 2016 we have been looking for a fan ownership model that would work best for St Mirren. I feel that, in association with SMiSA and Kibble, we have created a partnership that can stand the test of time and promote all the positives that this model can bring.

I would personally like to thank everybody who has worked tirelessly over the last 18 months to pull this together.

I thank you all for your support and, as Chairman, look forward to exploring and helping deliver all the exciting possibilities that our partnership with SMiSA and Kibble can bring to our football club.

And finally……….

The last couple of months of the season are upon us and the team need your support more than ever. It’s a cliché but the fans truly can be the 12th man and make a huge difference both home and away by bringing your positive support.

We’ve been through some testing times over the last 3 seasons and sticking together has helped us deliver a positive outcome each time.

This season will be no different.

Stay right behind Jim and the team. COYS!

Visitor Information

  • Electronic Ticketing System

At the SMiSA Stadium we have an electronic ticketing system in place at the turnstiles.

The process of using the system is fairly straight-forward and easy to use:

    • On entering the turnstile you will see the ticket reader.
    • Place your match ticket (with the barcode or QR code facing upwards) or smartcard – into the aperture
    • Once the ticket/smartcard is accepted into the system the green light will illuminate and an audio alert will sound after which you should hear the turnstile being unlocked
    • Push the turnstile gate and enter the stadium as you normally would.

The whole process will only take a few seconds.

Please note that there will be stewards in attendance to help where required.

  • Street Parking on Matchday

The Club has been made aware of problems occasioned by inconsiderate parking in the area of Tannahill Road.

Seemingly supporters are parking despite the presence of double yellow lines and as a consequence local bus routes are also being blocked because streets in this area are narrow and fans are parking on both sides. People, many of whom are elderly, are having to walk from Greenhill Road to their homes because buses can’t get access.

Residents who have cars parked in driveways are experiencing similar difficulties getting their vehicles in and out. On being approached by local residents some supporters have been somewhat aggressive which could lead to confrontation.

St Mirren Football Club strives to be a good neighbour and we would ask that ALL supporters attending the stadium not only park in accordance with local parking restrictions but also give consideration to the needs of local residents by parking sensibly so as not to occasion an unnecessary obstruction.

  • Picking Up & Dropping Off by Car on Match Day

We are also aware of problems with patrons parking at the front of the Main Stand to pick up disabled supporters at the end of the game. This area is a 'no parking' zone on match days (with cones on the road) and has to be kept clear for emergency access. It is an inappropriate location for disabled spectator uplifts, as not only does it cause an obstruction on the road, it also causes a danger to pedestrians leaving the stadium.

Please note that the designated pick-up/drop off points are either in Drums Avenue or the two lay-byes on Ferguslie Park Avenue.

  • Finding the SMiSA Stadium

  • Getting to the SMiSA Stadium

    BY ROAD

Follow signs for Paisley & Glasgow Airport. Exit the M8 at Junction 29 (St James’ Interchange) which is just after Glasgow Airport turn off if travelling east to west. Be careful not to exit on to the A737 which is signposted for Irvine. It is best to stay in the middle lane when passing the Airport as this leads naturally to the St James’ Interchange exit.

At the interchange take the first left onto a dual carriageway with some football parks on the left hand side. Follow this road and after a sharp right hand bend you should now be in Greenock Road. Then take your first right on to Clark Street and drive to the end of the street which is the junction with Greenhill Road, turn left and you will see the stadium on the opposite side of the road.

    BY RAIL

Get train from Paisley Gilmour Street to Paisley St James – exit from the station is straight onto Greenhill Road where the stadium is facing you. To plan your journey by rail with Scotrail please click HERE.

    BY BUS

Most buses will stop at Paisley Cross or Mill Street, from both you will see the Paisley Town Hall. From the Town Hall cross the High Street towards the Piazza Shopping Centre, when acoss walk towards the town centre until you come to Gilmour Street. Turn right on to Gilmour Street and walk towards the railway station which is about 150 yards away. From there you can get train to Paisley St James or if you prefer to walk the following routes are advised by the police:

Home fans: cross road to the left on to St James Street – follow through up Underwood Road then turn right at Greenhill Road where stadium is 200 yards further along the road. Access to the Main Stand is from Greenhill Road and the South and West Stands will be accessed from Drums Avenue.

Away fans: cross road to Love Street continue up the street till you come to Albion Street where you will turn left. Follow Albion Street until you come to the junction with Greenock Road where you will turn right. Cross the road then walk about 200 yards before taking your first left on to Clark Street. Walk straight up Clark Street to the end of the street which is the junction with Greenhill Road, turn left and you will see the the stadium on the opposite side of the road. Board members from Kibble

St Mirren Football Club is delighted to welcome two new members to the Board of Directors after SMISA members overwhelmingly backed a new ownership proposal in February.

SMISA was already on track for majority fan ownership of the club but was not due to buy out owner Gordon Scott until 2026.

Under the new plans, Kibble have bought 27.5% of Scott’s shares, with SMISA then taking its own stake to 51% before the end of 2021.

Kibble, based in Paisley since 1840, will bring its commercial expertise to St Mirren, helping bring in new income to be reinvested in the team, while working with the club to create new training and employment options for the young people in their care.

With the deal now completed, Jim Gillespie, Chief Executive of Kibble, and Ronnie McGinlay, Board Member of Kibble, have officially joined the St Mirren Board of Directors, taking part in their first St Mirren Board meeting last week.

Jim Gillespie said: "This new partnership will allow us to grow the business of St Mirren and at the same time increase Kibble’s opportunities for employment, training and education as well as access to sport, health and wellbeing support.

"Kibble will bring our commercial expertise to St Mirren, creating a dynamic partnership and complementing the existing set up by offering the support and expertise that a large charity has in areas such as HR, finance, marketing and communications. The strength in this partnership will help bring in new income to be reinvested in the team, which in turn will generate more non-footballing income to create a sustainable business model for the club going forward."

Ronnie McGinlay has been a partner in Walker Laird, since 1983. Established in 1815, Walker Laird has been providing legal services to clients in Paisley, Renfrewshire and throughout Scotland for over 200 years.

This year will be the sixth consecutive year that Walker Laird has sponsored the St Mirren Player of the Year Award Dinner. In addition, this is the second season that the firm is the official team sock sponsor.

Speaking on the new partnership between the club, SMiSA and the Kibble, Ronnie said: "As a St Mirren fan, longstanding member of the local community and a board member of Kibble, I am excited about what the development of this partnership will offer. Using Kibble’s commercial and skilled support services, I am confident that it will benefit St Mirren and add to the current expertise and resources.

"Providing opportunities to improve the lives of the young people in Kibble and the local community, while allowing St Mirren to develop and grow, is the foundation of this partnership."

Reaction: Jim Goodwin Post-Celtic (March 2020)

Jim Goodwin gives his thoughts as Saints were beaten 5-0 at Celtic Park in the Ladbrokes Premiership.

Match Report: Celtic 5-0 St Mirren

St Mirren were handed just a third league defeat in 2020 as the Buddies were beaten 5-0 by league leaders Celtic.

Leigh Griffiths scored twice in the first-half to have the Hoops in control at the break. Odsonne Edouard added a third for Celtic nine minutes into the second-half before Griffiths nabbed his hat-trick with 16 minutes remaining. Callum McGregor rounded off a poor afternoon for Saints when he netted from the penalty spot in the final minute.

Jim Goodwin made three changes to the side the drew 0-0 with St Johnstone on Wednesday night. Cammy MacPherson, Tony Andreu and Junior Morias were brought in in place of Ross Wallace, Ilkay Durmus and Alex Jakubiak.

Celtic enjoyed the lions share of possession as was probably to be expected but Saints looked to make any opportunities count in the early goings. With eight minutes played Calum Waters did brilliantly down the left-side before sliding the ball across the box. It had looked primed to fall to the feet of Morias, but somehow missed the forward who would have had a brilliant chance to put the Buddies 1-0 in front had it fallen to him.

MacPherson forced Fraser Forster into a save on 14 minutes with a free-kick from 25 yards. The midfielder got the ball over the wall and creeping in towards the goalkeeper's left-hand post but the Englishman was down quickly to gather.

Four minutes later Celtic would open the scoring through Griffiths. From just inside the box on the left-hand side, Edouard clipped the ball over the Saints defence to meet Leigh Griffiths who swept home from close range. It was a cheap goal to give away with the Celtic forward completely unmarked at the back post as he put the home side ahead.

The Hoops could have doubled their lead just two minutes later with Vaclav Hladky making a tremendous double save to keep Edouard and James Forrest at bay. Hladky was being made to work by Celtic and the Czech goalkeeper again denied Forrest on 27 minutes, holding the winger's curling shot from the edge of the area.

Saints were still very much in the match at this point, thanks to Hladky, and more good work from Waters saw the left-back knock the ball beyond Forrest allowing him to charge into the penalty area only for his ball across to be cleared by the Celtic defence. A few minutes later, Tony Andreu had a dig from 20 yards but his effort was easy enough for Forster to hold.

Hladky again kept Celtic out when he got two hands to a Tom Rogic strike from 18 yards.

With the game ebbing towards half-time Griffiths added his and Celtic's second on 44 minutes. The forward dribbled his way through the Saints defence, exchanging a one-two with Rogic before sliding the ball beyond Hladky to double his and Celtic's tally.

Celtic stretched their lead further just nine minutes into the second-half when Edouard added his name to the score-sheet.

St Mirren looked to pull a goal back with Andreu curling into the arms of Forster on 56 minutes, while Obika sent an effort just wide seven minutes later.

But with 16 minutes remaining it was Celtic who would stretch their lead further. Griffiths grabbed his hat-trick as he slammed home from the edge of the box.

Celtic put the icing on the cake in the final minute when Callum McGregor netted from the penalty spot after Sam Foley had brought down Hatem Elhamed.

Up next for Saints is a vital home match as the Buddies face bottom side Hearts at the Simple Digital Arena on Wednesday night.

Match Preview: St Mirren v Celtic (7th Mar)

St Mirren head to Celtic Park on Saturday to face the league leaders in the Ladbrokes Premiership.

FORM

St Mirren - DLWLDD

Celtic - DWLWDW

St Mirren cut the gap on ninth placed Ross County to three points after a 0-0 draw with St Johnstone on Wednesday night.

The Buddies have only lost two of their last eight league matches since last facing Celtic. There have been two wins against Kilmarnock (1-0) and Motherwell (2-1), draws with Aberdeen (0-0), Hibernian (2-2), Hamilton (1-1) and St Johnstone (0-0), while the two defeats have come against Rangers (0-1) and Livingston (1-2).

Neil Lennon's side currently sit atop of the Ladbrokes Premiership - 13 points clear of second-place Rangers as they search for nine league titles in a row.

The Hoops dropped their first league points off 2020 on Wednesday night when they drew 2-2 at Livingston. Tom Rogic's injury time equaliser snatched a late point to avoid defeat.

Celtic's last league defeat came at the end of 2019 when Neil Lennon's side were beaten 2-1 by Rangers at Celtic Park.

PREVIOUS

Tomorrow's match will be the third and final meeting of the two sides this season.

Celtic have come out on top in the previous two fixtures this season winning 2-0 at Celtic Park in October and despite Cammy MacPherson pulling a late goal back when the sides met on Boxing Day at the Simple Digital Arena, Celtic won 2-1.

St Mirren haven't beaten Celtic since the 2013 League Cup semi-final where goals from Esmael Goncalves, Paul McGowan and Steven Thompson gave Saints a 3-2 victory and a place in the final.

The Buddies last league win over Celtic came 10 years ago when doubles from Andy Dorman and Steven Thomson saw Saints defeat Celtic 4-0 at the Simple Digital Arena.

Our last win at Celtic Park was almost 30 years ago when Saints, managed by Tony Fitzpatrick, defeated Celtic 3-0 thanks to goals from Guni Torfason, Geordie Shaw and Paul Lambert.

TEAM NEWS

Gary MacKenzie, Kyle Magennis, Stephen McGinn and Ryan Flynn all remain out for the Buddies.

Kyle McAllister should be available despite a knock on Wednesday night.

MANAGER'S THOUGHTS

"You'll always get opportunities and the important thing is that when those opportunities come along that we are clinical and take them.

"Teams have gone there in the past and got shock results and we have to believe that we are capable of doing the same tomorrow.

"We need to believe. If we can take away a point then fantastic, if we can take away all three then that would be out of this world really.

"The fact of the matter is they have only lost one league game at Celtic Park all season so we are well aware of how difficult it is going to be."
