Boyd-Munce is a Buddie!

St Mirren Football Club is delighted to announce the signing of Caolan Boyd-Munce on a deal until the end of the season - subject to international clearance - with the club holding an option to extend further in the summer.

The midfielder joins the club as a free agent having left English Championship side Middlesbrough in January.

The 23-year-old Northern Irishman began his career at Glentoran before moving to Birmingham City at the age of 16. He spent six years at Birmingham, with a loan spell at Redditch United included, before signing for Middlesbrough for an undisclosed fee in January 2022.

Having been capped by Northern Ireland to U21s level, the midfielder knows Stephen Robinson well and says the manager didn't have to do too much to persuade him to sign for the Buddies.

Speaking to stmirren.com, Caolan said: "I had quite a few offers but none of them felt 100%. As soon as I had my first day in here I called my mum and dad and told them I thought this was the one.

I came in to train for a few days and when I got here I was put at ease because it was a cracking dressing room. The boys made me feel so welcome and the levels and intensity at training were brilliant.

"The manager knows how to get the best out of players and I'm really looking forward to working with him. He didn't really need to make much of a sell. Because I know him and he knows me he just told me how it is and what he needs from me and that was it.

"I like to play," he continued. "I wanted to come somewhere that I'm going to get the ball and there are players that want the ball. I want to play forward and control the game."

Speaking on the signing, manager Stephen Robinson said: "It's a short-term contract for Caolan to prove himself.

Caolan is a young international that I worked with previously as a young boy. He's technically very good. He's playing catch up fitness wise, but he has a great attitude and is someone that we feel if we can develop there may be something longer term for him.

"We're trying to fill the gap that we've had since Ethan [Erhahon] left. He's a similar type player to Ethan who I think we have missed.

"He can certainly be in the squad going forward and play 10/15 minutes in matches. But with the intensity we play at it might take him a bit of time to get up to speed.

"This deal is more a view to what we can do next season. We are trying to be proactive and have a look at positions we want but also being able to utilise him if needed this season."

Fraser Taylor and Luke Kenny agree contract extensions

We are delighted to confirm that St Mirren Youth Academy graduates Luke Kenny and Fraser Taylor have signed contract extensions until summer 2024.

The two have been training with the first-team this season with Fraser having made three appearances from the bench, while Luke had a short loan at Lowland League side East Kilbride.

Manager Stephen Robinson said: "Fraser and Luke have both been a part of our first-team squad all season.

We feel like they are the future and, combined with some of the more experienced players we are signing, we feel it's important to give these boys contracts and keep that chain of players coming through from the academy for next season.

"We have to try and improve that pathway for the academy players and if they are good enough they will play for me. Luke and Fraser are two of maybe three or four that we are going to keep on and it's important to have six or seven younger players that gives the club its identity.

"It's also nice to develop young players and it's up to them after that."

Trevor Carson agrees contract extension

St Mirren Football Club is delighted to confirm that Trevor Carson has signed a one-year extension to his current contract which keeps him tied to the club until summer 2025.

The experienced goalkeeper joined St Mirren in May 2022 from fellow cinch Premiership side Dundee United and has fully established himself as our number one with nine clean sheets in 31 appearances this season.

With his original deal due to expire in summer 2024, the club has moved to extend Trevor’s contract by a further year.

Speaking to stmirren.com, Trevor said: "I'm really enjoying my time here.

I know how the manager works and if you do well for him he'll reward you. He called me out of the blue and asked me how I'd feel about extending for an extra year on top of the year I had left and it was a no brainer for me. Overall I'm just feeling delighted.

"It was a gamble coming here because, as a family, we had made the decision to move back down south and I had offers there. But the manager rang me and he's a hard man to say no to.

"Any doubts I had about signing quickly moved to the side. The lads have been great, the club is great and I felt settled after about two weeks here. It was an easy decision for me to stay.

"It's great to play every week," he continued.

"All I wanted was a chance and thankfully I've been able to keep my place. My form has been consistent and now the gaffer has rewarded me for that with an extra year."

Trevor also paid tribute to goalkeeping coach Jamie Langfield.

Langers has been amazing," he said.

"I'm not getting any younger and I've had some bad injuries over the last few years, but the way he's been able to manage me and make me feel 100% on a Saturday is testament to him and Gerry [Docherty] the physio."

"He's been exceptional to work with personally as well as getting me ready to play on a Saturday."

Manager Stephen Robinson added: "I think it’s important to keep the players that are going to continue taking us forward and give them a little bit of security.

It’s important to keep building on this squad and Trevor is an international goalkeeper.

"He’s been superb this season and is someone that I have worked with for a long time and trust implicitly. I wanted to make sure he had a bit of security and the club felt the exact same."

Diarmuid O'Carroll excited for Northern Ireland opportunity and thanks Stephen Robinson

Diarmuid O'Carroll admits he's excited at the prospect of taking up the role of Senior Coach at Northern Ireland and owes St Mirren manager Stephen Robinson a debt of gratitude for his support.

The 35-year-old was today announced as part of Michael O'Neill's backroom team for Northern Ireland's upcoming UEFA Euro 2024 qualifying campaign.

It's a role that Diarmuid believes will aid his development as a coach and is hopeful that St Mirren will reap the benefits moving forward.

It's really exciting for me personally," he told stmirren.com

"I owe an awful lot to the manager and the club for supporting me and helping me develop over my time here. My main focus day-to-day will still be with the club, but during international breaks I'll go and have another experience that will hopefully see St Mirren get a better coach in the long run.

"I'm young in my development and very much have areas to learn and improve. I look to the manager as he's gone this pathway himself and you recognise what a part it played in his development before he became a manager.

"He has a really good relationship with Michael [O'Neill] and I know Michael from previously working at the Irish FA a little bit as well. The fact that someone who is so good with the gaffer is willing to back me and push me forward is a huge compliment. It's humbling and a massive confidence boost."

Saints manager Stephen Robinson praised his assistant and believes it's a shrewd appointment by Michael O'Neill and the Irish FA.

Diarmuid is a huge part of our relative success this season and where we find ourselves," the manager said.

"He's very good on the training pitch and he's brilliant around the place in terms of enthusiasm. I've experienced it when you are away on internationals and on long trips. You need positive people and you need the quality that someone like Diarmuid will bring to it and I think it's a very prudent move by Michael O'Neill.

"I speak to Michael on a regular basis and he came in to see us a couple of weeks ago. He asked my opinion on Diarmuid and I couldn't speak any higher of him. I think he'll be a huge asset to Northern Ireland and I think their players will enjoy working with him."

Loan Watch: 13/03/2023

We have a number of our players out on loan at clubs across Scotland. Here's a look at how some of them got on at the weekend.

Jay Henderson put in a man of the match performance for Inverness Caledonian Thistle on Friday night as they defeated cinch Premiership side Kilmarnock 2-1 to reach the semi-final of the Scottish Cup.

Dean McMaster played the full 90 minutes for Airdrieonians as they beat Kelty Hearts 6-1 in cinch League One on Saturday. The Diamonds stayed in fifth place - two points off a promotion play-off spot.

Gavin Gallagher played the full match for Dalbeattie Star in their 5-1 loss away to East Stirlingshire in the Lowland League. Ewan Thomson was unavailable for Cowdenbeath due to suspension. The Blue Brazil drew 1-1 with Gala Fairydean.

Diarmuid O'Carroll named in Northern Ireland backroom team

Diarmuid O’Carroll has been named as part of Michael O’Neill’s Northern Ireland backroom team for their UEFA Euro 2024 qualification campaign.

The St Mirren assistant manager will remain in his post at Saints but will now also take on the role of senior coach working alongside Michael O’Neill and his newly appointed backroom team.

The 35-year-old was first-team coach alongside Stephen Robinson at Morecambe and joined St Mirren as assistant manager following Stephen’s appointment as manager in February 2022.

Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill said: "I have watched Diarmuid in action on the training ground and he is a vibrant young coach. I believe he will be a great asset to us."

St Mirren mark international women's day with new support of Women's team

St Mirren Football Club has marked International Women’s Day 2023 by agreeing to match Kibble’s sponsorship deal with the St Mirren Women’s team.

Kibble's recently announced sponsorship agreement with St Mirren Women’s team is a multi-year deal, which will enhance the team’s day-to-day operations as the Scottish Women’s League One side seek to reach Scotland’s top-flight in the years ahead. The club has now matched this support as we look to help grow the Women and Girls Academy.

St Mirren Football Club Chairman John Needham said: "We are delighted to announce our support for the women’s team over the next three years.

Our aim is to help create stability which will enable the Women's team to push to the next level. As a board, we recognise the value the Women and Girls Academy brings to our football club. This aligns with our desire to make our club more diverse and inclusive.

"In the coming months we will continue to develop the partnership, exploring opportunities and areas to grow the women and girls' programme and the club overall."

Janette Swanson, Chairperson of the St Mirren Women’s team, said: "The club committing this funding is excellent news for the Women’s team. Women and girls’ football is at an exciting time as the growth and participation continue to explode.

The investment will bring stability and the basis from which we can grow our pathways and opportunities for female players across our region. It’s also an opportunity to become more integrated into the football family of St Mirren."
