Luke Kenny signs contract extension

We can confirm that St Mirren Youth Academy graduate Luke Kenny has signed a contract extension.

The 19-year-old defender signed his first professional contract with the club in 2020 and that has now been extended.

Luke is currently on loan at Lowland League side East Kilbride to gain valuable playing experience that will help aid his development.

Richard Taylor signs for St Mirren until the end of the season

St Mirren Football Club is delighted to announce the signing of Richard Taylor on a deal until the end of the season - subject to international clearance - with the club holding an option to extend further.

The defender joins the club following the expiry of his contract at League of Ireland First Division side Waterford where he made 33 appearances.

The 22-year-old Englishman began his career at Burnley before signing for Southend United in 2019. Richard would have further spells at Barnet, Dulwich Hamlet and Dagenham & Redbridge before signing for Waterford in January last year.

Speaking on the signing, manager Stephen Robinson said: "Richard came to our attention as a left-sided centre-half and left-footed defenders is something we don’t have a lot of.

"He has very good attributes. He’s six-foot-three, very quick and has a good left-foot.

"He’s someone who will come in on a short-term deal to challenge for a place and give us a bit more depth.

"With Jay Henderson going out for game time it’s allowed us to use his wage to bring Richard in on a short-term deal with the potential to earn a longer deal which I’m quietly confident he will do."

St Mirren Football Club saddened by passing of Frank McGarvey

St Mirren Football Club is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Frank McGarvey at the age of 66.

Frank McGarvey arrived at Love Street in December 1974 and became a regular during 1975-76. The striker’s first competitive goal came in a League Cup win over East Fife on the 9th August. He went on to score 11 times from 40 appearances.

1976-77 was the season that Fergie’s Furies came of age and none more so than Frank. He scored 17 league goals as Saints marched to the old First Division title and promotion to the Premier League.

Frank was the star as the title was clinched at Dens Park on the 19th April, claiming his first senior hat-trick in a 4-0 rout of Dundee. This form was not unnoticed with Frank winning a Scotland Under-21 cap against England. He added a second against Czechoslovakia in September, as his good form continued in the top-flight.

McGarvey again scored 17 league goals with six in cup competition to remain Saints' top scorer. He gained further honours when he played for the Scottish League side against the Italian League in April 1978.

McGarvey continued to score goals in the 1978/79 season with 13 seeing his top scorer again. This form attracted the attention of English clubs and it was no surprise when Liverpool took him south in May 1979.

After 10 months at Anfield, Frank returned to Scotland for a five-year spell at Celtic, culminating in scoring the winner in the 1985 Scottish Cup final - his final match for Celtic.

He would return to Love Street in June 1985 and was soon back in scoring in the black and white, netting in his second match. He ended the season with 12 goals, including a double in our UEFA Cup victory over Slavia Prague.

The 1987 Scottish Cup was, by McGarvey’s own admission, one of the highlights of his career. Wins over Caledonian, Raith Rovers and Morton took Saints to Hampden for a semi-final against Hearts. With the score tied at 1-1, the ball broke to Frank inside the six-yard box and he managed to guide it under Henry Smith, to take Saints into the final.

16th May 1987. 10 years after helping Saints win the First Division; McGarvey played his part as the Scottish Cup returned to Paisley.

In April 1988 manager Alex Smith resigned and Tony Fitzpatrick took over with Frank named player/assistant manager. His final season at the club saw him concentrate more on the managerial role, making just four appearances during 1989-90. His final match was against Hibernian on the 16th September. At the end of the season he joined Queen of the South as player/manager.

In May 2005, McGarvey was inducted into the St Mirren Hall of Fame having made 341 appearances scoring 102 goals across his two spells at the club.

Frank will forever be remembered at St Mirren and our deepest condolences are with Frank's loved ones at this very sad time.

Rest in peace, Frank.

Peter Urminsky agrees contract extension

St Mirren Football Club is pleased to confirm that Peter Urminsky has signed a one-year extension to his current contract which keeps him at the club until summer 2024.

The six-foot-five Slovakian goalkeeper joined Saints in January 2020 and went on to have loan spells with Ayr United and Stenhousemuir before making his first-team debut in July 2022 against Cowdenbeath in the Viaplay Cup.

Peter made further starts against Airdrieonians and FC Edinburgh and has been on the bench for all our cinch Premiership matches this season as backup to Trevor Carson.

Manager Stephen Robinson said: "Peter has been excellent any time he has come into the team.

"He's got real stature, a good kick on him and he's getting better and better with every training session and I think what we have on our hands is an asset.

"He's someone we were very keen to secure on a new contract."

Peter follows Greg Kiltie and Luke Kenny who have also signed extensions with the club this week.

Jay Henderson joins Inverness Caledonian Thistle on loan

St Mirren Football Club can confirm that Jay Henderson will join cinch Championship side Inverness Caledonian Thistle on loan until the end of the season.

The St Mirren Youth Academy graduate has made 38 first-team appearances since making his debut in April 2021.

Game time has been limited for the 20-year-old this season and it was felt important for Jay to gain valuable playing experience to continue his development ahead of next season.

Manager Stephen Robinson said: "With no reserve side at the moment it's important that Jay goes out and gets games so he becomes an option for next season.

"We're sending him to a club that play the right way with good people in charge of it. Moving away from home and having to deal with the ups and downs of football we feel will bring Jay on tremendously.

"We've done this with Kieran Offord, Lewis Jamieson, Dean McMaster, Ewan Thomson and Aiden Gilmartin and we feel it will benefit all the players."

Everyone at St Mirren wishes Jay well in his time at Inverness.

Previous

Neither side could be separated in the only league meeting of the two this season when Kilmarnock visited the SMiSA Stadium in October. There was little between the two sides though Saints goalkeeper Trevor Carson made a couple of good saves to earn his clean sheet in the 0-0 draw.

This is our first trip to Rugby Park since May 2021 when the spoils were shared in a six goal thriller. A Kyle Lafferty double put Kilmarnock 2-0 ahead, but Jamie McGrath and Cammy MacPherson pulled Saints level. Greg Kiltie scored to put Kilmarnock back in front, but Collin Quaner scored soon after to make it 3-3 and give Saints a point.

St Mirren are unbeaten in their last five against Kilmarnock - a run that goes back to September 2020 when Kilmarnock won 1-0 at the SMiSA Stadium.

Our last league win at Rugby Park was in May 2013 when goals from John McGinn, Paul McGowan and Conor Newton saw us end the 2012/13 campaign with a victory.

Manager takes plenty of positives against difficult Livingston

The manager gives his reaction to tonight's draw with Livingston as Saints ended 2022 with a point away from home.

Saints end 2022 with a point in Livingston

St Mirren ended the year with a point following a 1-1 draw with Livingston at The Tony Macaroni Arena.

Both sides had a player sent off with Curtis Main scoring an equaliser to give Saints the share of the spoils and end 2022 unbeaten in their last four.

Saints boss Stephen Robinson went with the same starting eleven that defeated Aberdeen 3-1 on Christmas Eve.

The opening 20 minutes were a fairly uneventful spectacle save for Mark O'Hara going into the book for a foul on Andrew Shinnie with just six minutes played.

Livingston were reduced to 10 men on 24 minutes when Scott Pittman was given his marching orders following VAR intervention. The Livi midfielder caught Keanu Baccus with his studs and was initially shown a yellow card. But referee Steven McLean was advised to check the pitchside monitor and upgraded to red much to the displeasure of the home support.

Despite the man advantage it would take Saints until the final minute of normal time at the end of the half to create their first real opportunity. Marcus Fraser collected the ball around 20 yards from goal and had a strike that was well pushed away by Livingston goalkeeper Ivan Konovalov.

A fairly listless first-half prompted Robinson to make a change at the break with Eamonn Brophy on to replace Jonah Ayunga.

Saints' man advantage didn't last too long into the second-half when O'Hara was shown a second yellow card for persistent fouling. And within just a minute of the red card Livingston took the lead through Cristian Montano. The Lions winger was first on to a free-kick into the box. His initial effort came off the post, but he was quickest to react to the rebound to put the home side in front.

The game burst into life after the opener and Livingston could have doubled their lead on the hour mark when Bruce Anderson was sent clear by Sean Kelly. The striker managed to shake off Charles Dunne to get the shot away but his effort was well saved by the foot of Trevor Carson. Saints broke up the park and almost equalised when Brophy got his head on the end of a ball in from the left. The Buddies would have been level but for a quite frankly ridiculous save from Konovalov who brilliantly clawed away.

Ironically, Saints were much livelier when they went down to 10 men and found an equaliser on 64 minutes when Main knocked home Brophy's ball in from the left to make it 1-1.

Livingston felt they should have been awarded a penalty with a little over 15 minutes remaining when Ayo Obileye went down in the box, but nothing was given after a quick VAR check.

St Mirren had a big chance to win it going into the final minute of normal time when Brophy raced clear down the right side. He had Main to his left but elected to go alone and fired over the bar. That would be that as Saints end 2022 in fifth place in the cinch Premiership.
