They are relishing the opportunity to play at the SMiSA Stadium again.

Six big wins in our quest for top six

St Mirren secured a highly coveted top six spot for the first time in the current league format and ensured a highest top-flight finish since 1984/85.

12 wins and eight draws saw Stephen Robinson's side pick up 44 points from 33 cinch Premiership matches.

We take a look at six of our best and most important wins in our quest to finish top six.

Dundee United 0-3 St Mirren

After picking up a first cinch Premiership win of the season at home to Ross County the previous week, Saints travelled to Tannadice to face Dundee United in our second away match in the league.

Curtis Main scored his first goals of the season when he netted either side of half-time to have the Buddies two ahead before substitute Alex Greive put the seal on the victory in stoppage time as Saints left the City of Discovery with all three points.

St Mirren 2-0 Celtic

An inspired performance saw St Mirren defeat Celtic 2-0 at the SMiSA Stadium and inflict a first league defeat on the league leaders in almost a year.

Saints hosted a Celtic side that had won their opening six league fixtures including an impressive 4-0 derby win over their rivals Rangers in the previous league game.

Ange Postecoglou’s side showed up in Paisley looking to make it a full calendar year undefeated in the cinch Premiership, but walked away from the SMiSA Stadium empty-handed as goals from Mark O’Hara and Jonah Ayunga gave us our first home league victory over the Hoops since that famous 4-0 win in March 2010.

St Mirren 2-1 Livingston

St Mirren moved into third place in the cinch Premiership on matchday eight after a dramatic late victory over Livingston at the SMiSA Stadium.

The Buddies broke the deadlock on 69 minutes when Keanu Baccus scored his second Saints goal. But Jonah Ayunga was shown a red card and Livingston were awarded a penalty with less than 15 minutes remaining. Sean Kelly missed from the spot as he sent his penalty kick over the bar.

It looked like 10-men Saints would have to settle for a point when Livingston drew level, but Alex Greive - late back from international duty from New Zealand - climbed off the bench to score an injury-time winner to give Saints all three points.

Aberdeen 1-3 St Mirren

The Buddies made a midweek trip to Pittodrie in February to face Aberdeen on the back of a 1-0 win over Motherwell at the SMiSA Stadium.

Both sides boasted a victory over each other with Aberdeen winning 4-1 at Pittodrie in August, while Saints were 3-1 victors on Christmas Eve in Paisley.

It was Saints who would take the bragging rights in this encounter after a Curtis Main double and Declan Gallagher's first St Mirren goal saw us win our first league match at Pittodrie since 2011.

St Mirren 3-0 Livingston

Stephen Robinson's men hosted Livingston at the SMiSA Stadium at the beginning of April in a big top six showdown.

Saints went into the match sitting in seventh place - a point behind Livingston in sixth and knew anything but a win would keep the Lions in the driving for a top six spot heading into the final three matches before the split.

A first-half blitz saw the Buddies blow Livingston away with a Mark O’Hara brace - both from the penalty spot - coming either side of Tony Watt’s first St Mirren goal giving us a 3-0 win and moving us into the top six.

Hearts 0-2 St Mirren

A week after our big win over Livingston, Saints travelled through to Edinburgh to take on fellow top six side Hearts at Tynecastle.

Saints hadn't won in Gorgie since 2013, but a terrific performance - capped off by goals from Curtis Main and Alex Gogic - saw us take a well deserved three points to all but confirm our spot in the top six.

Post-split

Stephen Robinson's men will start the split with a trip to Easter Road to face Hibernian on Saturday 6th May.

The Buddies will then face Hearts at the SMiSA Stadium on Saturday 13th May, before an away trip to Celtic a week later.

Despite having already visited Pittodrie twice this season, Saints will head to the Granite City again on Wednesday 24th May to face Aberdeen in our final away fixture of the season. This fixture has been reversed by the SPFL to achieve the 19/19 home/away balance.

Finally, Saints close out the season at home to Rangers on Saturday 27th May.

Daniel Finlayson joins Linfield on permanent deal

St Mirren Football Club can confirm that Daniel Finlayson will join Linfield on a permanent deal in the summer subject to international clearance.

The 22-year-old initially joined St Mirren on loan from Rangers back in October 2020 before the deal was made permanent. Daniel then made his Saints debut as a substitute against Ross County in April 2021 and made his first start against Hamilton at the SMiSA Stadium in May 2021.

Daniel had a loan spell at League One side Kelty Hearts before moving across to Northern Ireland to join Linfield on loan in June 2022.

Manager Stephen Robinson said: "Daniel has gone on loan and done really well, leading Linfield to take him on a permanent basis for a small fee.

He has featured in every game as well as in their European ties. We feel Daniel now needs regular first-team football at his age and we can’t guarantee that for him at this stage.

"We wish him well in his future development and wish both Daniel and Linfield well for the remainder of this season and next."

St Mirren Women in action at the SMiSA Stadium this weekend

St Mirren Women’s team return to action at the SMiSA Stadium for the second time this season when they face Stenhousemuir on Sunday in Scottish Women's League One.

The Women's team defeated Westdyke 3-0 at the SMiSA Stadium back in November in what was their first match at the Stadium since May 2019.

Kate, St Mirren Women’s Head Coach, told stmirren.com: "Playing at the stadium is a fantastic opportunity for us to showcase the women's game.

"The last time we played at the stadium was such a special occasion for all involved and we'd love to have as many of the local community come out and support us again."

Tickets for this match are only available in the Main Stand and can be purchased now online and at the St Mirren Ticket Office. Kiosks will open on matchday but please note these are cashless.

Top six achieved despite defeat to Kilmarnock

It's not often that a team loses a crunch game and yet the afternoon ends with their fans in party mode – but that's exactly what happened in Paisley this afternoon.

Saints knew a point against Kilmarnock – a team that hasn't won away from home all season – would be enough to secure their best league finish since 1985. But why do things the easy way when you can do them the St Mirren way?

As much as the Buddies wanted to secure a coveted top six spot under their own steam, they also knew results elsewhere would do the job if they lost to the Ayrshire side. Unfortunately, first half goals from Liam Donnelly and Kyle Vassell meant the Paisley faithful were hoping for favours elsewhere far earlier than they'd have liked – Thierry Small's second half red card pretty much ending hopes of a comeback.

Given what was at stake for both sides, it wasn't too surprising that the opening 10 minutes or so were slightly nervy. Saints goalie Trevor Carson saved easily from David Watson, while at the other end Alex Gogic headed Scott Tanser's corner well over. Kyle Vassell then had a shot across goal that went out for a throw, however next time around he brilliantly held the ball up before sliding it through the defence for the on-rushing Liam Donnelly to thump past Carson.

Saints looked for a quick response, Keanu Baccus being flattened inches outside the box as he shaped to shoot. The free-kick was taken short to Gogic who hammered it towards goal but it was blocked by the Killie defence. The visitors were pushing for a second, Carson saving from Vassell before the forward headed wide after a throw in had been flicked on. Instead, it was his strike partner who doubled the lead, Daniel Armstrong hanging up a cross for Christian Doidge whose header hit the post before finding the net.

The home support were stunned and desperately needed something to cheer, Tony Watt eventually blazing over after Killie failed to deal with Joe Shaughnessy's long throw as a disappointing first half came to a close. It was little surprise that boss Stephen Robinson decided to ring the changes at the break, Greg Kiltie and Thierry Small coming on for Baccus and Scott Tanser.

However, Killie almost added a third within seconds of the restart, Watson crossing for Rory McKenzie who met it perfectly only for Carson to pull off a tremendous save. Former Saint Alan Power then shot wide from distance before visiting goalie Sam Walker was finally called into meaningful action, saving easily from Ryan Strain after the fullback had got the better of his man.

An injury to Charles Dunne brought his afternoon to a premature end, the Saints boss switching things up replacing him with Alex Greive, but it was one his fellow subs who would have a meaningful impact – and not in a good way. Small was frustrated that a throw in decision went against him and threw the ball down in disgust, earning himself a booking. After Killie took the throw, the on loan fullback then hauled back Watson, leaving ref Willie Collum with little option but to show him his second yellow card in the space of 14 seconds.

Scott Robinson, who'd replaced the injured Vassell, thought he'd added the third only for team-mate Armstrong to get in the way of his shot. The final throw of the Saints dice saw Watt and Gogic replaced by Kieran Offord and Declan Gallagher before former Saints loanee Jordan Jones curled a shot wide as Killie looked to remove any lingering doubts about where the points were headed.

It was a day with little for the home support to cheer – but with five minutes left it was party time. News came through that Dundee United had doubled their lead against Livingston and the pressure was off. Barring a ridiculous turnaround at Tannadice – which thankfully never came – Saints' place in the top six was secure. Normally, the final whistle in a 2-0 defeat would be greeted by boos but this time around - in front of a record capacity crowd of 7,937 at the SMiSA Stadium - there were cheers – and even a lap of honour from the players.
