Winter clothing available for those in need at the SMiSA Stadium this weekend

A winter clothes appeal, which asked St Mirren fans and the local community to donate warm clothing and jackets for those in need, has been overwhelmed with donations.

Now, the team behind the initiative, are opening the doors of the SMiSA Stadium on Saturday 3rd December between 10am and 4pm at the concourse in the Main Stand for those who are in need of warm clothing this winter.

Those attending will be able to choose from a range of jackets, free of charge Additionally, soup and a roll will be available on the day, made with help from young people at Kibble’s Skills Academy, with Scottish Leather Group covering the cost of the hot lunch.

The group of local businesses has donated clothing items including hats, scarves, jumpers, boots and blankets to Accord Hospice in Paisley who will sell these items at their shop on Morton Avenue, all proceeds from these sales will remain with Accord Hospice.

The initiative, led by St Mirren, Kibble and Scottish Leather Group, asked fans attending matches at the SMiSA Stadium to bring along any warm items of clothing that they no longer required, while staff at the organisations were encouraged to do the same.

Young people from Kibble have now come together with volunteers from Scottish Leather Group and St Mirren to sort through all donations this week ahead of Saturday 3rd December, with the team 'overwhelmed' by the number of items received.

The three organisations now hope that the donations can support those in need within the local area ahead of what is set to be a tough winter and decided to host an open day at the football club to reach as many people as possible. Any leftover items will be donated to a warm clothing bank.

Keith Lasley, chief operating officer at St Mirren Football Club, said: "Community is at the core of St Mirren Football Club and we see that each and every day across our players, our fans and our people.

"The winter clothing appeal with Kibble and Scottish Leather Group is just another great example of the generosity and passion shown by fans and we couldn’t be prouder to be part of the initiative. We truly hope that we can support those in need throughout what is set to be a difficult winter and will continue to do what we can within the local community."

Jim Gillespie, chief executive of Kibble, said: "The donations received as part of our winter clothing appeal with St Mirren and Scottish Leather Group has gone beyond what any of us imagined. The enormous generosity shown by fans, the local community, and staff at each of the organisations is fantastic and we are thrilled to be part of the campaign.

"Our young people have been working closely with volunteers to help sort the donations and will be helping attendees at St Mirren on 3 December find clothing to suit them. They are delighted to be part of this initiative, as is everyone at Kibble."

Nicholas Muirhead, chief commercial officer at Scottish Leather Group, said: "It has been truly overwhelming and humbling to have received such an outpouring of donations as part of the appeal – we couldn’t have imagined it being quite so successful.

"Our staff have been incredibly generous and, with the items donated from St Mirren fans and the wider community, we have a fantastic amount of jackets and other warm clothing available. As one of Paisley’s largest organisations and employers, we are committed to supporting our local community and truly hope that we can bring some relief to those in need."

St Mirren to face Dundee at home in Scottish Cup

St Mirren have been drawn at home to Dundee in the Fourth Round of the Scottish Cup.

Saints will welcome the Dee to the SMiSA Stadium on the weekend of 21/22nd of January 2023.

Full fixture details including ticketing arrangements will be announced in due course.

Fighting Saints unlucky in the capital

It was a difficult outing for St Mirren Women away to FC Edinburgh Women, as the home side won 2-0 at Meadowbank as the first half of the season came to a close.

The scoreline could be seen as harsh as St Mirren pushed the Scottish Women League One league leaders till the final whistle. Although ultimately, missed opportunities and small mistakes cost Saints the match.

The game was always going to be a tough test against a well-organised FC Edinburgh team that sit atop League One. Despite a strong start from Saints, a deflected ball left the team exposed, allowing Edinburgh's Debs McLeod to lob the ball over Jo Casey into the back of the St Mirren net.

Saints refused to sit back and pushed hard for an equaliser and with two excellent chances just missing the FC Edinburgh goal, the Buddies were unfortunate not to come into the break level.

The second-half would prove to be similar with both teams very evenly matched. Regardless of St Mirren's best efforts, their hopes were dashed as the home team were awarded a penalty in the early stages of the second 45. FC Edinburgh midfielder Emma Mitchell scored from the spot to secure the three points for the hosts.

Despite the result St Mirren Women's Head Coach Kate Cooper was pleased with the performance of the team on the day.

The game against FC Edinburgh was always going to be difficult," Kate told stmirren.com.

"They’re a very good side and have proven that this season with their unbeaten run.

"We pressed effectively and worked hard throughout the game. I believe we competed well against them and the final score wasn’t a true reflection of the match. We deserved a draw or at least a goal.

"Everyone stood up to the game plan and we done our best at keeping the game tight.

"I’m pleased with the amount of opportunities we created," Kate continued.

"We were unfortunate with converting chances into goals, but it’s a learning curve for the team and the players are upbeat and understand it's part of the process of developing and improving performances week-in week-out."

The final result means that St Mirren stay in sixth with 21 points from the opening 13 matches. The winter break gives Kate and the team a chance to reflect on the first half of the season and prepare for their upcoming Scottish Cup match against Rossvale.

Keanu Baccus creates St Mirren history

History was made last night as Keanu Baccus became the first ever St Mirren player to play at the World Cup.

The moment came when the 24-year-old midfielder replaced Jackson Irvine in the second-half, coming up against the likes of superstars Kylian Mbappe, Antoine Griezmann and Olivier Giroud as Australia faced current holders France in their Group D opener.

The Socceroos took a shock lead on nine minutes through Craig Goodwin and competed well throughout the 90 minutes, but unfortunately succumbed to world class France who eventually won 4-1.

The whole St Mirren family wishes to express how proud we are of Keanu and wish him well for the remainder of the tournament.

Happy homecoming for St Mirren Women after emphatic win at the SMiSA Stadium

It was a happy homecoming for St Mirren Women as they defeated Westdyke in emphatic fashion in their first match at the SMiSA Stadium in over three years.

Over 250 fans were in attendance as Kate Cooper's side put on a show - winning 3-0 against second place Westdyke in Scottish Women's League One.

Naomi Clark-Granger and Kelly Ross netted in the first-half to put Saints in control at the break, before substitute Francesca Blair rounded off the scoring early in the second 45.

The game was tight early on with plenty of chances for both sides. Bethany Cochrane's dangerous corner was almost converted by the visitors but for a good clearance by the Buddies backline.

A collision between Saints' Helen McLeod and Westdyke's Christie MacKenzie saw the game stopped for a number of minutes with MacKenzie receiving treatment on the park for what looked like a burst nose.

St Mirren took the lead almost immediately after play resumed. A corner kick from the left was swung into the onrushing Clark who nodded into the net after Westdyke goalkeeper Megan Girardi had failed to collect.

Saints made it two just five minutes before the interval. A free-kick deep in the Westdyke half found its way to McLeod who cushioned a header into the path of Kelly Ross to sweep home from close-range.

Cooper made two changes at the break with Layla Philip and Blair coming on in place of Gemma Dickson and Clark-Granger.

Kelly Ross almost scored her second and St Mirren's third six minutes into the second-half knocking agonisingly by the post under pressure from Girardi. The third goal would come though on 56 minutes when substitute Blair was the quickest to react after a stramash in the penalty area following captain Karen McCabe's corner.

Saints were comfortable in possession and happy to sit in as Westdyke looked for a consolation, but in truth Jo Casey in the St Mirren goal wasn't overly troubled by anything from the Aberdeenshire outfit.

It was an afternoon the Cooper and her players can look back on with immense pride as they put on a show for those in attendance and claimed a big three points against title chasing Westdyke.

Full-Time: St Mirren Women 3-0 Westdyke

Loan Watch: Full 90 for Jamieson and McMaster as Airdrieonians win

A number of our younger players are currently out on loan at clubs across Scotland. Here's a look at how some of them got on at the weekend.

Lewis Jamieson and Dean McMaster played the full 90 minutes as Airdrieonians defeated Kelty Hearts 1-0 at the Excelsior Stadium on Saturday. Ex-Saint Calum Gallagher scored the only goal of the game on the follow-up after the Kelty Hearts goalkeeper had saved Jamieson's initial effort. The Diamonds moved to within two points of the play-off spots.

Kieran Offord wasn't available for Alloa Athletic with the 18-year-old on international duty with Scotland U19s. Kieran didn't feature for Billy Stark's side, but his Saints teammate Dylan Reid played 68 minutes as Scotland defeated Kazakstan 5-2 at Somerset Park.

There was no action for Aiden Gilmartin or Ewan Thomson with Cowdenbeath's next match not scheduled until Saturday 3rd December.
