Up Next: Hearts v St Mirren (11th Sep)

It's another away day for St Mirren as Stephen Robinson's side head to Scotland's capital to face Hearts in the cinch Premiership.

The Buddies' three-match winning run came to an end last weekend following a 3-0 loss to St Johnstone at McDiarmid Park. That defeat came after wins over Hibernian (1-0), Dundee United (3-0) and Ross County (1-0). Despite defeat, Saints still sit in sixth place in the cinch Premiership - just a point behind Sunday's opponents.

Hearts have won three, drawn one and lost two of their opening six cinch Premiership fixtures this season. Robbie Neilson's outfit have beaten Ross County (2-1), Dundee United (4-1) and St Johnstone (3-2) - all of which were at Tynecastle. The Jambos also drew with rivals Hibernian (1-1) whilst losing away to Celtic (0-2) and Livingston (0-1).

They go into Sunday's match following their Europa Conference League group match against İstanbul Başakşehir at Tynecastle on Thursday night.

Previous

Hearts came out on top in all four meetings between the two sides last year - three of which were in the cinch Premiership and the other in the Scottish Cup.

In the three league meetings, Robbie Neilson's side twice won 2-0 while also winning 2-1.

Despite goals from Eamonn Brophy and Connor Ronan seeing Saints come from 2-0 down to draw level, the Buddies were eventually defeated 4-2 in the Scottish Cup encounter in March.

Our last win against Hearts was in the final match of the curtailed 2019/20 season. Jon Obika netted the only goal as Saints ensured Premiership survival with a 1-0 win at the SMiSA Stadium.

Lost opportunity in defeat to St Johnstone

Stephen Robinson was disappointed with defeat to St Johnstone and sees it as a missed opportunity, but says he couldn't fault players effort.

St Mirren winning run ended with defeat at St Johnstone

St Mirren's winning run came to an end as the the Buddies lost 3-0 at St Johnstone.

Nicky Clark scored in the first-half to give the Perth Saints the initiative before goals from Drey Wright and Graham Carey secured the points for the home side.

Stephen Robinson had went with the same starting eleven that had defeated Hibernian and Dundee United, with Scott Tanser returning to the bench after injury.

A scrappy opening period saw little opportunities though Jonah Ayunga knocked just wide after getting on to a Curtis Main cross on 15 minutes.

St Johnstone were seeing more of the ball in opening exchanges minutes and took advantage on 25 minutes with Nicky Clark scoring on his debut for the Perth side. The ball fell to the forward at the back post and he made no mistake from just a few yards out to put the home side ahead.

Saints almost had a big opportunity to draw level when Ayunga found Main in plenty of space but the touch was heavy which allowed Alex Mitchell to recover and clear the danger.

St Mirren were looking more lively early in second 45 but didn't create anything clear cut which prompted the manager to make a triple substitution just before the hour mark. Scott Tanser, Jay Henderson and Eamonn Brophy replaced Richard Tait, Ryan Strain and Curtis Main. But within a minute of the changes Melker Hallberg went close to doubling the home side's advantage when he curled inches over from 20 yards.

St Johnstone would make it two on 66 minutes when Adam Montgomery got to the byline and cut-back for Drey Wright who slammed into the net from close-range.

St Mirren could have pulled one back with 16 minutes remaining when the ball fell kindly to Declan Gallagher at the back post, but the defender didn't catch it properly and dragged wide. Two minutes later Saints were agonisingly close to reducing the deficit when Tanser headed off the bar before Ayunga hit the post on the follow-up.

The Buddies were committing bodies forward in the hope of finding a way back into the game, but those hopes were extinguished when St Johnstone put the seal on the victory with just four minutes of normal time remaining. Marcus Fraser was penalised for a challenge on Connor McLennan in the penalty box and ex-Saint Graham Carey slammed home from 12 yards to give the Perth side a 3-0 win at McDiarmid Park.

Kieran Offord joins Alloa Athletic on loan

St Mirren Football Club can confirm that Kieran Offord has joined Alloa Athletic on loan until the end of the season.

Kieran is a highly-rated prospect at Saints and will continue his footballing development with the cinch League One side as he looks to gain valuable playing time.

Kieran impressed on his debut at just 17-years-old when he started in a 0-0 draw with Celtic at the SMiSA Stadium last December.

This season the forward started in our Premier Sports Cup wins over Cowdenbeath and FC Edinburgh and has been on the bench for all five of our cinch Premiership matches.

The club retains the option to recall Kieran in January and we wish him all the best during his loan spell at the Wasps.

Up Next: St Johnstone v St Mirren (3rd Sep)

Saints are back on their travels this weekend as we head to Perth to take on St Johnstone.

Stephen Robinson's men go into Saturday's match on a three-match winning run with Keanu Baccus' first St Mirren goal giving the Buddies a 1-0 win over Hibernian at the SMiSA Stadium last weekend. That victory followed wins over Dundee United (3-0) and Ross County (1-0) that have propelled Saints to sixth place in the cinch Premiership - joint on points with Aberdeen in fourth.

St Johnstone currently sit in 10th place in cinch Premiership with one win and four defeats from their opening five matches. After a 1-0 defeat to Hibernian on the opening day, the Perth Saints defeated Motherwell 2-1 at Fir Park to pick up their only points of the season.

Callum Davidson's side have lost their last three matches - losing to Hearts (2-3), Aberdeen (0-1) and Rangers (0-4).

St Mirren defeated St Johnstone on their last trip to McDiarmid Park with Greg Kiltie scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win. That was our first win in Perth since October 2014.

Saints were also victorious in the only other meeting of the two in 2022 with goals from Connor Ronan and Alex Greive seeing us come from behind to win 2-1 at the SMiSA Stadium in February.

The two other games of the 2021/22 season ended in 0-0 draws at both McDiarmid Park and the SMiSA Stadium.

St Johnstone's last win in this fixture was in May 2021 when they defeated St Mirren 2-1 in the Scottish Cup semi-final.
