Stephen Robinson delighted players got deserved win

Richard Tait stunner gives St Mirren the points

On a sizzler of a day in Paisley, it was appropriate that a scorcher of a goal gave Saints a well-deserved first win of the season against Ross County.

The deciding moment came early in the second half from a perhaps unlikely source. As the ball rolled out of the Staggies box, Richard Tait strolled onto it and sent a tremendous shot into the top corner.

Saints had been the better side to that point and could already have been in front, Jonah Ayunga hitting the post in the first half. Unsurprisingly, County rallied after falling behind with Owura Edwards heading against the same post before Trevor Carson made a late save to deny Olaigbe and secure the victory.

Both sides went into this one looking for their first points of the season and it was the Buddies who made the brighter start, Ryan Strain fashioning a chance for himself but failing to find the target from 20 yards before sending in a tantalising cross that Curtis Main couldn't quite get on the end of. Moments later Keanu Baccus did brilliantly to win the ball back and play in Jonah Ayunga, the forward getting in a shot from the edge of the box that got the better of keeper Ross Laidlaw but not the woodwork as it smacked the far post and bounced away.

Ross County hadn't threatened at all in the opening half hour but it needed good tackling from Charles Dunne to keep out Owura Edwards and Dominic Samuel as the visitors made rare attacks. Edwards had a better chance at the end of some neat County passing but could only kick the ball off his face before it was cleared behind for a corner. Saints could have been in front just before the break, Strain releasing Baccus to burst through to the edge of the box but he couldn't keep his shot down and Laidlaw watched it sail a yard or two over the bar.

The Buddies continued on the front foot in the second half and took the lead in spectacular fashion. Baccus won possession and again charge forward but opted to pass rather than shoot. His team-mates seemed to be in a similar quandary as the ball bounced around the box before falling to Richard Tait 20 yards from goal. He was in no doubt about what to do and curled a tremendous first time shot beyond the reach of Laidlaw into the top corner.

Eamonn Brophy and Mark O'Hara replaced Main and Greg Kiltie before Ayunga fired over from the edge of the box. As the clock ticked down Joe Shaugnessey's header from Strain's corner was easy for Laidlaw – probably a relief for the County keeper after his mis-control had given away the set-piece in the first place. Opposite number Trevor Carson had virtually been a spectator all afternoon but was finally called into action with just a couple of minutes, reacting brilliantly to keep out Olaibe's deflected shot. It was to prove the Staggies' final chance, Saints comfortably seeing out stoppage time to pick up a fully merited three points.

County initially struggled to muster a response but should have been level after an hour when a wonderful cross from Callum Johnson found the unmarked Owura but his diving header rattled the post, much to the relief of the home support. The Staggies were beginning to get into gear, Josh Sims seeing a shot blocked before sub Jordan White sent the rebound over the bar. The pressure continued with a series of corners that eventually ended when Ross Callachan sent a shot well wide of the far post.

Visitor Information

  • Electronic Ticketing System

At the SMiSA Stadium we have an electronic ticketing system in place at the turnstiles.

The process of using the system is fairly straight-forward and easy to use:

    • On entering the turnstile you will see the ticket reader.
    • Place your match ticket (with the barcode or QR code facing upwards) or smartcard – into the aperture
    • Once the ticket/smartcard is accepted into the system the green light will illuminate and an audio alert will sound after which you should hear the turnstile being unlocked
    • Push the turnstile gate and enter the stadium as you normally would.

The whole process will only take a few seconds.

Please note that there will be stewards in attendance to help where required.

  • Street Parking on Matchday

The Club has been made aware of problems occasioned by inconsiderate parking in the area of Tannahill Road.

Seemingly supporters are parking despite the presence of double yellow lines and as a consequence local bus routes are also being blocked because streets in this area are narrow and fans are parking on both sides. People, many of whom are elderly, are having to walk from Greenhill Road to their homes because buses can’t get access.

Residents who have cars parked in driveways are experiencing similar difficulties getting their vehicles in and out. On being approached by local residents some supporters have been somewhat aggressive which could lead to confrontation.

St Mirren Football Club strives to be a good neighbour and we would ask that ALL supporters attending the stadium not only park in accordance with local parking restrictions but also give consideration to the needs of local residents by parking sensibly so as not to occasion an unnecessary obstruction.

  • Picking Up & Dropping Off by Car on Match Day

We are also aware of problems with patrons parking at the front of the Main Stand to pick up disabled supporters at the end of the game. This area is a 'no parking' zone on match days (with cones on the road) and has to be kept clear for emergency access. It is an inappropriate location for disabled spectator uplifts, as not only does it cause an obstruction on the road, it also causes a danger to pedestrians leaving the stadium.

Please note that the designated pick-up/drop off points are either in Drums Avenue or the two lay-byes on Ferguslie Park Avenue.

  • Finding the SMiSA Stadium

  • Getting to the SMiSA Stadium

    BY ROAD

Follow signs for Paisley & Glasgow Airport. Exit the M8 at Junction 29 (St James’ Interchange) which is just after Glasgow Airport turn off if travelling east to west. Be careful not to exit on to the A737 which is signposted for Irvine. It is best to stay in the middle lane when passing the Airport as this leads naturally to the St James’ Interchange exit.

At the interchange take the first left onto a dual carriageway with some football parks on the left hand side. Follow this road and after a sharp right hand bend you should now be in Greenock Road. Then take your first right on to Clark Street and drive to the end of the street which is the junction with Greenhill Road, turn left and you will see the stadium on the opposite side of the road.

    BY RAIL

Get train from Paisley Gilmour Street to Paisley St James – exit from the station is straight onto Greenhill Road where the stadium is facing you. To plan your journey by rail with Scotrail please click HERE.

Most buses will stop at Paisley Cross or Mill Street, from both you will see the Paisley Town Hall. From the Town Hall cross the High Street towards the Piazza Shopping Centre, when acoss walk towards the town centre until you come to Gilmour Street. Turn right on to Gilmour Street and walk towards the railway station which is about 150 yards away. From there you can get train to Paisley St James or if you prefer to walk the following routes are advised by the police:

Home fans: cross road to the left on to St James Street – follow through up Underwood Road then turn right at Greenhill Road where stadium is 200 yards further along the road. Access to the Main Stand is from Greenhill Road and the South and West Stands will be accessed from Drums Avenue.

Away fans: cross road to Love Street continue up the street till you come to Albion Street where you will turn left. Follow Albion Street until you come to the junction with Greenock Road where you will turn right. Cross the road then walk about 200 yards before taking your first left on to Clark Street. Access to the North Stand will be from Ferguslie Park Avenue.

2022/23 Away Kit Update - Second Order confirmed

After the incredible launch of our 2022/23 away kit we have now sold out of our original order due to the extraordinary demand.

We have been working with Joma to secure a second order and they have now confirmed that it will be possible and this is great news.

Unfortunately the manufacturing process takes some time and we won’t have physical stock until November.

We will, however, be able to take pre-orders for these to allow you to secure your kit and further details will be available in due course.

The unprecedented demand for our away kit has meant the club achieved record sales with almost FIVE times the sale of last season’s away kit.

We thank everyone that has purchased one of our home or away shirts ahead of the new campaign for their support of the club.

St Mirren saddened to hear of passing of Pat Liney

St Mirren Football Club is saddened to hear of the passing of its former goalkeeper Pat Liney who has passed away at the age of 86.

A Paisley Buddie, Pat was born in our town in July 1936 and began his youth career at Linwood Thistle before signing for junior club Dalry Thistle. Pat almost had the opportunity to join Saints when he was offered a trial at Love Street, but he injured his knee playing for Dalry in a cup match the night before and missed out.

Following a spell in the Army doing his national service, Pat signed for Dundee in 1957 where he would become a bona fide Dark Blues legend as part of their Scottish League winning team of 1961/1962.

But St Mirren was Pat's club and in 1964 he finally had the chance to join his boyhood club where he would make 74 appearances over two years.

In an interview with the Daily Record in 2011, Pat said: "My dad, Danny, and I never missed a Saints game at Love Street.

"We would get the bus from Linwood to Paisley Cross and only a few of us would get off – with the rest staying on to go to either Celtic Park or Ibrox. That used to irk me.

"If dad was working, I would go by myself, even though I was just eight or nine at the time. I would be first in the ground as soon as the turnstiles opened.

"I got a move to St Mirren and the feeling when I ran out at Love Street for my debut was the best in the world.

"It may have been almost 50 years ago but I remember it well. We beat Partick Thistle 3-1 and just to pull on the Saints strip made me as proud as punch. My dad was the proudest man in Paisley."

Our condolences are with the family and friends of Pat at this sad time.

Up Next: St Mirren v Ross County (13th Aug)

St Mirren host Ross County in the cinch Premiership with both sides looking for their first point in the league this season.

Saints were unlucky in defeat against Motherwell on the opening day. Stephen Robinson's side created a host of chances, but an inspired goalkeeping performance coupled with a Kevin Van Veen penalty saw the Steelmen leave Paisley with the points. The Buddies were then beaten 4-1 by Aberdeen at Pittodrie last weekend after being reduced to 10 men following Declan Gallagher's sending off.

Ross County come into Saturday's match having also lost their first two league games of the season. Malky Mackay's men were beaten 2-1 by Hearts at Tynecastle on the opening day before a 3-1 defeat at home to Celtic on matchday two.

Previous

St Mirren faced Ross County three times last season - winning one, drawing one and losing one.

Saints were victorious in the first meeting with Eamonn Brophy, Marcus Fraser and Scott Tanser all scoring in a 3-2 win at the Global Energy Arena in October.

The Buddies created a number of chances with 11 shots on target the last time we faced The Staggies at the SMiSA Stadium but couldn't find the net with the game finishing goalless.

Malky Mackay's side edged Saints out by 1-0 the last time the sides met in March with Joseph Hungbo scoring the only goal for County from the penalty spot.

St Mirren B knocked out on penalties

St Mirren B were knocked out of the SPFL Trust Trophy after losing 4-2 on penalties to East Stirlingshire.

Neither side could be separated in 90 minutes and despite Fraser Taylor and Toyosi Olusanya netting from the spot the Saints were defeated.

After a fairly tepid first 45 the game sprung to life in the second-half. Scott Honeyman had two big opportunities to give the visitors the lead. First, on 53 minutes, the East Stirlingshire man shot into the arms of Kenzie Smyth from close-range. The Saints goalkeeper then made a terrific one-handed to push away Honeyman's attempt from distance.

Olusanya should have put St Mirren ahead five minutes later when he was the recipient of a Kieran Offord cut-back, but the Saints forward shot straight at Ross Connelly in the Shire goal. Substitute Gavin Gallagher was inches away from opening the scoring on 66 minutes with his strike flying inches over from 20 yards.

10 minutes later a good run from Offord looked like it might yield the first goal but he struck the side-netting.

The visitors were denied by a brilliant Smyth save from Kenny Barr heading into the final 10 minutes, while Luke Kenny made an incredible goal-saving challenge in the closing moments to ensure the game ended goalless.

Penalties were needed to decide the game, but Offord and Jay Henderson had their spot-kicks saved by Shire goalkeeper Ross Connelly and the away side made no mistake with their efforts to progress to the second round.
