Ayunga scores as Saints pick up point against Rangers

St Mirren head into the World Cup break after picking up a point against Rangers in the cinch Premiership.

The Buddies were good value for their one goal lead after Jonah Ayunga had put us in front early in the second-half. But a VAR awarded penalty in the final 10 minutes saw James Tavernier rescue a point for the Ibrox side.

There was one change from the team that drew with St Johnstone on Wednesday night with Jonah Ayunga returning to the starting eleven in place of Alex Greive. Keanu Baccus came on to the bench after missing Wednesday's match with a dead leg.

It was end-to-end stuff in the opening 10 minutes with Rangers coming closest on seven minutes. Malik Tillman moved away from the challenge of two Saints players but fired his effort wide of the left-hand post.

Rangers started to take a grip on possession but their best opportunity was saved brilliantly by Trevor Carson as he denied Scott Wright's header at the far post with his feet. Wright had another big chance after he drove through the Saints midfield but he dragged his shot wide from 20 yards.

The Buddies grew more in confidence with Greg Kiltie getting to the byline and putting a brilliant low ball across the face of the Rangers goal. It was begging to be touched home but there were no takers for Saints. 10 minutes later it was Strain's turn to put a great cross into the box which Tavernier had to turn behind for Rangers. From the resulting corner Declan Gallagher headed just wide.

Saints ended up the first-half strongly with a succession of corners as well as a wicked Strain delivery almost turned into his own net by Leon King.

That strong end to the first 45 was carried on into the start of the second-half with Ayunga putting us in front less than two minutes after the restart. Gallagher's long throw was headed on by Curtis Main with Ayunga first on to the knock down. His initial effort was brilliantly saved by Allan McGregor, but the striker was able to nip in front of Leon King to knock home.

Saints were well-organised and the visitors didn't look like breaking the Buddies defence down. Indeed, it was Saints who went close to doubling their advantage with less than 15 minutes remaining with Ayunga inches away from grabbing his and St Mirren's second.

As always seems to be the case with St Mirren at the moment VAR wouldn't be far from the action and it played its part in the final 10 minutes as Rangers were awarded a penalty. Kent had initially been booked for simulation after going down under the challenge from Marcus Fraser. But the referee was asked to check the pitchside monitor and gave the spot kick. Tavernier's powerful effort from 12 yards flew into the net despite Carson going the right way.

Rangers could have won it at the death with Ryan Jack missing a gilt-edged chance when, unmarked, he headed straight at Carson. It would have been cruel on St Mirren who thoroughly deserved at least a point from the match.

Winter Warmer Initiative

Ahead of what is set to be one of the toughest winters to date, St Mirren Football Club has launched a new initiative to collect warm clothing and jackets that we can then distribute throughout the local community.

After a great initial response at our match against St Johnstone on Wednesday night, we are once again asking supporters attending Saturday's match against Rangers to bring along any warm items of clothing that they no longer require. We are hoping to collect as many winter jackets, jumpers, scarves, hats, gloves, boots and blankets as we can.

We’ve teamed up with Kibble and Scottish Leather Group to collect and distribute the clothing and ask that you hand in any donations at entrance points when arriving at the SMiSA stadium for the matches.

We’ll also be opening our doors to anyone not attending the matches this week. Winter clothing can also be donated at the Security Gate for Scottish Leather’s Group’s Paisley factory on Turner Drive, Paisley PA3 4EP until Wednesday 16th November. Weekday drop-off hours at Scottish Leather Group are between 8am and 6pm, with weekend hours between 10am and 2pm.

We’ve been overwhelmed with generosity from fans to date and hope that, if you are able, you can support this new initiative and help a Buddie out.

Visitor Information

  • Electronic Ticketing System

At the SMiSA Stadium we have an electronic ticketing system in place at the turnstiles.

The process of using the system is fairly straight-forward and easy to use:

    • On entering the turnstile you will see the ticket reader.
    • Place your match ticket (with the barcode or QR code facing upwards) or smartcard – into the aperture
    • Once the ticket/smartcard is accepted into the system the green light will illuminate and an audio alert will sound after which you should hear the turnstile being unlocked
    • Push the turnstile gate and enter the stadium as you normally would.

The whole process will only take a few seconds.

Please note that there will be stewards in attendance to help where required.

  • Street Parking on Matchday

The Club has been made aware of problems occasioned by inconsiderate parking in the area of Tannahill Road.

Seemingly supporters are parking despite the presence of double yellow lines and as a consequence local bus routes are also being blocked because streets in this area are narrow and fans are parking on both sides. People, many of whom are elderly, are having to walk from Greenhill Road to their homes because buses can’t get access.

Residents who have cars parked in driveways are experiencing similar difficulties getting their vehicles in and out. On being approached by local residents some supporters have been somewhat aggressive which could lead to confrontation.

St Mirren Football Club strives to be a good neighbour and we would ask that ALL supporters attending the stadium not only park in accordance with local parking restrictions but also give consideration to the needs of local residents by parking sensibly so as not to occasion an unnecessary obstruction.

  • Picking Up & Dropping Off by Car on Match Day

We are also aware of problems with patrons parking at the front of the Main Stand to pick up disabled supporters at the end of the game. This area is a 'no parking' zone on match days (with cones on the road) and has to be kept clear for emergency access. It is an inappropriate location for disabled spectator uplifts, as not only does it cause an obstruction on the road, it also causes a danger to pedestrians leaving the stadium.

Please note that the designated pick-up/drop off points are either in Drums Avenue or the two lay-byes on Ferguslie Park Avenue.

At the interchange take the first left onto a dual carriageway with some football parks on the left hand side. Follow this road and after a sharp right hand bend you should now be in Greenock Road. Then take your first right on to Clark Street and drive to the end of the street which is the junction with Greenhill Road, turn left and you will see the stadium on the opposite side of the road.

Up Next: St Mirren v Rangers (12th Nov)

St Mirren host Rangers at the SMiSA Stadium in our final match before the World Cup break.

Saints are straight back to it following Wednesday night's 2-2 draw with St Johnstone in the cinch Premiership. A stunning Mark O'Hara strike late on looked like it would secure the points for Stephen Robinson's men only for Nicky Clark to score at the death to steal a point. Despite the disappointment of the late equaliser, the draw did make it seven unbeaten at home for the Buddies.

Rangers got back to winning ways with a 1-0 victory over Hearts at Ibrox. A second-half goal from Malik Tillman was enough to give Rangers the win as they bounced back from their 2-1 defeat against St Johnstone at the weekend.

Both sides will be aiming for a positive result in what will be their last cinch Premiership match until the middle of December.

Previous

The only meeting between the two took place last month with Rangers winning 4-0 at Ibrox. That result probably didn't tell the full story of the match with Saints creating a couple of good chances in Glasgow but failing to convert.

Rangers were victorious in the three meetings between the two sides last season as well. Connor Ronan scored a stunning strike in the first meeting of last season to put Saints 1-0 up last October, but two goals in a minute saw Rangers come away with a narrow 2-1 win.

Our only trip to Ibrox last season was on Boxing Day and played in front of just 500 fans with Rangers winning 2-0. Rangers won the last time they visited the SMiSA Stadium - winning 4-0 in April.

Saints' last win over Rangers was in the Premier Sports Cup in December 2020 when Conor McCarthy's injury-time strike saw us defeat Gers 3-2 at the SMiSA Stadium.

The officials

The referee on Saturday is Kevin Clancy. The assistant referees are Frank Connor and Sean Carr. Ross Hardie is the fourth official.

Andrew Dallas is the Virtual Assistant Referee (VAR) while Gary Hilland is the Assistant VAR.

Stephen Robinson: We'll pick the boys up

We'll pick the boys up. They know they've played well and maybe didn't get their just rewards tonight."

Stephen Robinson gave his reaction to our 2-2 draw with St Johnstone in the cinch Premiership.

Spoils shared as late equaliser for visitors denies Saints three points

A last-minute equaliser gave St Johnstone a share of the spoils at the SMiSA Stadium.

A Mark O'Hara wonder-strike on 81 minutes looked to have secured the points for Saints, but in the seventh minute of added on time Nicky Clark scored for the visitors to see them take a point with them.

St Johnstone took the lead through ex-Buddie Graham Carey who scored from the penalty spot on 33 minutes. But Greg Kiltie's sweet volley drew us level just nine minutes later. The Perth side were reduced to 10 men after VAR intervention saw Alex Mitchell given his marching orders in the second-half. And with just under 10 minutes remaining, stand-in skipper O'Hara scored a goal of the season contender as he rattled into the top corner from 25 yards only for Clark to score at the death for the visitors.

The manager elected to make three changes from the side that lost narrowly at Ross County on Saturday. Keanu Baccus missed out with injury, while Alex Gogic and Jonah Ayunga dropped to the bench. In came Scott Tanser, Kiltie and Alex Greive.

The first real chance of the match fell for the home side after good persistence from Kiltie saw the midfielder pick up the ball inside the box before laying off to Curtis Main who struck from 20 yards, but St Johnstone goalkeeper Remi Matthews got a strong hand on it to push away. Main went close against eight minutes later from similar range with a fierce strike that flew just inches over the bar.

St Johnstone were awarded a penalty kick just after the half hour mark following a lengthy VAR check. It took around three minutes for referee Euan Anderson to consult the pitch side monitor before subsequently awarding the spot kick after Drey Wright's attempted cross came off the arm of Scott Tanser. Trevor Carson went the right way but couldn't keep Carey's effort out.

St Mirren levelled with three minutes of the half remaining. Ryan Strain did well to get to the byline before flinging a cross into the box. Main tussled with the St Johnstone defence and the ball was headed out to Kiltie who caught it flush on the volley to smash it beyond Matthews to make it 1-1.

Conditions were making it difficult with a swirling wind and rain hanging over the SMiSA Stadium with neither side creating much in the opening 15 minutes of the second 45.

VAR was called upon for a second time in the evening just after the hour mark after Alex Mitchell's foul on Kiltie. The referee had initially booked the St Johnstone defender, only to be called over to the monitor to check. A quick look saw the yellow card wiped and a straight red card given in its place.

Saints were having all of the ball but struggling to make the man advantage count. Stephen Robinson went to his bench to bring Eamonn Brophy and Jonah Ayunga on in place of Declan Gallagher and Alex Greive as the game headed into its final 15 minutes. And with nine minutes remaining O'Hara stepped up to score a screamer. The midfielder couldn't have hit it any better as his strike from 25 yards flew into the top corner.

That felt like it would be the goal that gave St Mirren the points only for a sting in the tail. With the five additional minutes already played Clark rescued a point for the Perth Saints with a cool finish from inside the box in what was the last kick of the game.

Can you help your fellow Buddies?

Ahead of what is set to be one of the toughest winters to date, St Mirren Football Club has launched a new initiative to collect warm clothing and jackets that we can then distribute throughout the local community.

We are asking that any fans attending home matches this week against St Johnstone on Wednesday 9th November and Rangers on Saturday 12th November bring along any warm items of clothing that they no longer require. VAR

Video Assistant Referees (VAR) will be in place.

VAR is coordinated centrally from the video operations room at Clydesdale House, which shares its name with Clydesdale FC, a founding member of the Scottish FA that also revolutionised the Laws of the Game with the introduction of the modern-day throw-in.

VAR will be operated in line with the FIFA Laws of the Game using Hawk-Eye technology and with SPFL production partner QTV providing the central facility.

Video Assistant Referees at Clydesdale House will assist on-field referees in the event of a clear and obvious error or a serious missed incident in relation to the following criteria:

  • Straight red cards
  • Penalty area incidents
  • Goals
  • Mistaken identity

We are also aware of problems with patrons parking at the front of the Main Stand to pick up disabled supporters at the end of the game. This area is a 'no parking' zone on match days (with cones on the road) and has to be kept clear for emergency access.
