Stephen Robinson pleased after win over FC Edinburgh

The manager gives his take on our win over FC Edinburgh in the Premier Sports Cup this afternoon.

Saints close out cup campaign with win

St Mirren closed off their Premier Sports Cup campaign with a comfortable victory over FC Edinburgh.

First-half goals from Mark O'Hara and Jonah Ayunga had Saints 2-0 ahead at the break. Ayunga grabbed his second as he made it three less than a minute after the restart. Danny Handling pulled one back for the visitors, but there was no danger of the Buddies surrendering the lead in the final Group E game.

Keanu Baccus was given his St Mirren debut in place of the suspended Greg Kiltie, while Richard Tait, Joe Shaughnessy and Ryan Strain came in for Marcus Fraser, Scott Tanser and Toyosi Olusanya.

It took Saints just eight minutes to hit the front when O'Hara netted from the penalty spot. Ayunga was fouled by Robbie McIntyre and O'Hara sent the goalkeeper the wrong way from 12 yards to give Saints an early lead.

The Buddies had an appeal for another penalty just two minutes later when Baccus went down in a similar area to Ayunga but the referee said no on that occasion.

Ayunga had the ball in the net on 16 minutes when he brilliantly met a cross from the right but his header was ruled out by the offside flag. The forward wouldn't be denied nine minutes later though as he doubled St Mirren's lead. A lovely through pass from Ethan Erhahon found Baccus charging into the box and the Australian picked out Ayunga with a low pass across the face of goal. The Saints striker knocked beyond FC Edinburgh goalkeeper Sam Ramsbottom to score his third goal for the Buddies.

Ayunga - who netted a double last weekend against Cowdenbeath - almost got his second on 32 minutes, but was denied by a strong hand from Ramsbottom who was at full-stretch to turn the forward's strike from 20 yards wide.

Australian midfielder Baccus was impressing in his first Saints appearance and he nearly grabbed a debut goal on 35 minutes after driving into the box before clipping just by the post.

The visitors tested Peter Urminsky late in the half with the Slovakian goalkeeper down well to hold Innes Murray's close-range effort.

Saints made the perfect start to the second 45 as Ayunga scored his second just 46 seconds after the restart. The striker headed Tait's cross from the left and while Ramsbottom got a hand to it he couldn't keep it out the net.

FC Edinburgh pulled a goal back when a long pass from Kieran MacDonald picked out Handling who had managed to get clear of the Saints defence before finishing from 20 yards.

Stephen Robinson was able to give St Mirren Youth Academy graduate Fraser Taylor his first-team debut as he replaced Baccus. And the 19-year-old midfielder looked to make an immediate impact when he arrived late in the box to meet am Alex Greive cross on 75 minutes, but he headed over. Taylor was unlucky again six minutes later after brilliantly bringing the ball down his chest with his volley blocked by the FC Edinburgh defence.

Callum Crane should have added a second for FC Edinburgh on 82 minutes when he blasted high over the bar from inside the Saints box.

Saints had a number of opportunities to add a fourth in the final minutes of Greive was denied his first goal of the season when Ramsbottom made a good block with his legs from the New Zealand striker's shot, before the goalkeeper pushed away a Tait volley from 25 yards. Taylor then almost scored from the resulting corner as the ball in came off the far post.

It was a good workout for the Buddies ahead of the cinch Premiership opener against Motherwell at the SMiSA Stadium next weekend.

Visitor Information

  • Electronic Ticketing System

At the SMiSA Stadium we have an electronic ticketing system in place at the turnstiles.

The process of using the system is fairly straight-forward and easy to use:

    • On entering the turnstile you will see the ticket reader.
    • Place your match ticket (with the barcode or QR code facing upwards) or smartcard – into the aperture
    • Once the ticket/smartcard is accepted into the system the green light will illuminate and an audio alert will sound after which you should hear the turnstile being unlocked
    • Push the turnstile gate and enter the stadium as you normally would.

The whole process will only take a few seconds.

Please note that there will be stewards in attendance to help where required.

  • Street Parking on Matchday

The Club has been made aware of problems occasioned by inconsiderate parking in the area of Tannahill Road.

Seemingly supporters are parking despite the presence of double yellow lines and as a consequence local bus routes are also being blocked because streets in this area are narrow and fans are parking on both sides. People, many of whom are elderly, are having to walk from Greenhill Road to their homes because buses can’t get access.

Residents who have cars parked in driveways are experiencing similar difficulties getting their vehicles in and out. On being approached by local residents some supporters have been somewhat aggressive which could lead to confrontation.

St Mirren Football Club strives to be a good neighbour and we would ask that ALL supporters attending the stadium not only park in accordance with local parking restrictions but also give consideration to the needs of local residents by parking sensibly so as not to occasion an unnecessary obstruction.

  • Picking Up & Dropping Off by Car on Match Day

We are also aware of problems with patrons parking at the front of the Main Stand to pick up disabled supporters at the end of the game. This area is a 'no parking' zone on match days (with cones on the road) and has to be kept clear for emergency access. It is an inappropriate location for disabled spectator uplifts, as not only does it cause an obstruction on the road, it also causes a danger to pedestrians leaving the stadium.

Please note that the designated pick-up/drop off points are either in Drums Avenue or the two lay-byes on Ferguslie Park Avenue.

  • Finding the SMiSA Stadium

  • Getting to the SMiSA Stadium

    BY ROAD

Follow signs for Paisley & Glasgow Airport. Exit the M8 at Junction 29 (St James’ Interchange) which is just after Glasgow Airport turn off if travelling east to west. Be careful not to exit on to the A737 which is signposted for Irvine. It is best to stay in the middle lane when passing the Airport as this leads naturally to the St James’ Interchange exit.

At the interchange take the first left onto a dual carriageway with some football parks on the left hand side. Follow this road and after a sharp right hand bend you should now be in Greenock Road. Then take your first right on to Clark Street and drive to the end of the street which is the junction with Greenhill Road, turn left and you will see the stadium on the opposite side of the road.

    BY RAIL

Get train from Paisley Gilmour Street to Paisley St James – exit from the station is straight onto Greenhill Road where the stadium is facing you. To plan your journey by rail with Scotrail please click HERE.

    BY BUS

Most buses will stop at Paisley Cross or Mill Street, from both you will see the Paisley Town Hall. From the Town Hall cross the High Street towards the Piazza Shopping Centre, when acoss walk towards the town centre until you come to Gilmour Street. Turn right on to Gilmour Street and walk towards the railway station which is about 150 yards away. From there you can get train to Paisley St James or if you prefer to walk the following routes are advised by the police:

Home fans: cross road to the left on to St James Street – follow through up Underwood Road then turn right at Greenhill Road where stadium is 200 yards further along the road. Access to the Main Stand is from Greenhill Road and the South and West Stands will be accessed from Drums Avenue.

Away fans: cross road to Love Street continue up the street till you come to Albion Street where you will turn left. Follow Albion Street until you come to the junction with Greenock Road where you will turn right. Cross the road then walk about 200 yards before taking your first left on to Clark Street. Walk straight up Clark Street to the end of the street which is the junction with Greenhill Road, turn left and you will see the the stadium on the opposite side of the road. Access to the North Stand will be from Ferguslie Park Avenue.

Up Next: St Mirren v FC Edinburgh (23rd July)

Our Premier Sports Cup campaign comes to an end on Saturday with Saints hosting FC Edinburgh at the SMiSA Stadium.

Despite a 2-0 win over Cowdenbeath last Saturday, defeats to Arbroath and Airdrieonians mean the Buddies cannot qualify for the next round of the cup.

FC Edinburgh still have an outside chance of qualifying. Alan Maybury's side sit two points above Saints in Group E having defeated Cowdenbeath 3-0 on Wednesday night.

Previous to that, the Citizens lost 3-1 to Arbroath, but took a bonus point on penalties after a 1-1 draw with Airdrieonians in their opening match.

Previous

This is the third time St Mirren have faced FC Edinburgh with the previous encounters both coming in the group stages of the Premier Sports Cup.

The Buddies were winners in the only two meetings between the two thus far - both at the SMiSA Stadium.

Oan Djorkaeff's late penalty was enough for Saints to defeat the Citizens 1-0 back in 2019. Three years prior, Lawrence Shankland, Tom Walsh and Jack Baird scored in a 3-0 win for St Mirren.

Keanu Baccus is raring to go after arriving at Saints

It's been a long, drawn-out process to get Keanu Baccus to Scotland.

The Australian midfielder agreed a deal with St Mirren after the expiry of his contract at Western Sydney Wanderers in his homeland. But getting work permit and visa approvals have meant that the 24-year-old has only arrived in Paisley this week.

Keanu flew into Scotland on Monday evening and was straight down to training with sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday before visiting the SMiSA Stadium for the first time.

Speaking to stmirren.com after finally arriving at Saints, Keanu said: "It feels good to be here.

I've seen the stadium for the first time and I've been training for two days. It'll take me a week or two to get up to speed, but hopefully it'll be quick and I can get out there.

"I was trying to keep fit as much as possible and I knew the day would finally come and it has so I'm buzzing."

Keanu is now hoping to make his mark at St Mirren and explained what he believes supporters can expect from him.

I think I'm going to be a good fit for the team and hopefully we can get results on the pitch," he continued.

"There are some great teams in this league and I'm looking forward to every game because I think every game is important. The club has great history itself.

"I want to win as many games as possible and we have to have that mentality of be able to try and win those games and be as high up the table as possible.

"I'm a midfielder that can move well and get up and down the pitch and I'm hard-working. Hopefully I can contribute whether it's assists, goals or breaking up play, that's the kind of stuff I love."

Manager gives his reflections on tonight's defeat at Airdrieonians

The manager gives his reflections on tonight's defeat at Airdrieonians.

10-men St Mirren defeated at Airdrieonians

10-men St Mirren exited the Premier Sports Cup after a 2-0 defeat at Airdrieonians.

Saints were reduced to 10-men when Greg Kiltie was shown a red card on 33 minutes and Airdrieonians took full advantage of the extra man with Justin Devenny and Kyan Gunn scoring in the second 45 to secure victory for the Diamonds.

There were four changes to the Saints team that defeated Cowdenbeath on Saturday with Marcus Fraser, Declan Gallagher, Greg Kiltie and Toyosi Olusanya coming in for Ryan Strain, Joe Shaughnessy, Ryan Flynn and Kieran Offord. With Shaughnessy on the bench, Mark O'Hara took the captain's armband.

The Buddies dominated the early proceeding without creating really creating anything to worry Airdrieonians goalkeeper Josh Rae. Initially it was a poor pass-back from a Diamonds player that put the goalkeeper under pressure on 11 minutes. Alex Greive was quick to press the goalkeeper who cannoned the ball off the New Zealand striker before gathering.

Seven minutes later Jonah Ayunga had a decent opportunity to add to his two goals at Cowdenbeath on Saturday. Olusanya's ball across the box was cleared only as far as the Saints forward but he didn't get the connection he would have wanted and the effort was comfortably held by Rae.

Saints were reduced to 10-men when Kiltie was given his marching order for a challenge on Euan Deveney that was high and late.

Despite being down to 10-men the best chance of the half came for Saints on 44 minutes when Greive weaved brilliantly in the box before turning a low strike inches by the post.

The game was a bit more open in the early exchanges of the second 45 with Adam Frizzell going close for the home side in the early minutes of the half when his attempt with the outside of his boot fizzed just wide from 20 yards. Six minutes later a brilliant through ball from Ayunga found Greive on the chase, but the striker's effort was well pushed away by Rae.

Airdrieonians took the lead on 66 minutes with Devenny the first to react to slam home after Callum Smith's shot was blocked.

Joe Shaughnessy and Eamonn Brophy were brought on as Saints looked for a route back into the match, but Airdrieonians extended their lead in the dying moments when Gabby McGill pounced on a pass-back and rolled into substitute Gunn who put the gloss on the win for the Lanarkshire side.

Full-Time: Airdrieonians 2-0 St Mirren

St Mirren: Urminsky, Fraser (Shaughnessy 67), Gallagher, Dunne, Tanser (Strain 53), Kiltie, O'Hara (c), Erhahon, Olusanya (Flynn 35), Greive (Brophy 67), Ayunga

Dylan Reid to remain at St Mirren despite recent transfer approach

St Mirren Football Club can confirm that last week it allowed Dylan Reid permission to speak to a fellow cinch Premiership club regarding a possible transfer.

We can now confirm that Dylan has turned down the opportunity to leave St Mirren at this point in time.

The St Mirren Youth Academy graduate became the youngest ever player to play for St Mirren, as well as the youngest ever Scottish Premiership player, when he made his debut for Saints at just 16 years and five days old in March 2021. He has since gone on to play for the first-team on five occasions - most recently as a substitution in our 2-0 win over Cowdenbeath on Saturday.

We are pleased that Dylan will remain at St Mirren and look forward to him continuing his development at the club.
