Spoils shared in draw at The SMiSA Stadium

It was a share of the spoils for St Mirren after a 2-2 draw with Kilmarnock at The SMiSA Stadium.

First-half goals from Toyosi Olusanya and Mark O'Hara had Saints 2-1 ahead at the interval, but a Marley Watkins goal with 20 minutes to go saw the visitors pick up a point in Paisley. There was late VAR drama with James Scott having a goal disallowed in added time as Saints had to settle for a point.

Kilmarnock made a quick start with Richard Taylor having to turn a low cross wide inside the first 30 seconds, while Daniel Armstrong curled an effort over the bar from 20 yards on two minutes.

But it was Saints who took the lead when Olusanya netted his fifth goal of the season. The forward was on hand to glance home Brown's terrific delivery in from the left to make it three goals in his last four William Hill Premiership matches.

The lead didn't last though with the visitors levelling just four minutes later. A low corner found Armstrong in space and his deflected strike was turned in by Watkins. A VAR check followed for a potential offside but the forward was found to be onside and the goal stood.

There was a bit of needle in the game in the early goings and that saw Mikael Mandron pick up the first booking on 16 minutes. The forward was then spoken to by the referee for another foul two minutes later and that prompted manager Stephen Robinson to make an early change with Jonah Ayunga replacing the striker on 20 minutes.

Roland Idowu almost scored a brilliant solo goal just after the half-hour mark when his mazy run saw him work his way into the area, but his eventual shot was blocked.

Referee Matthew MacDermid was called to the monitor with five minutes of the first-half remaining after Shaun Rooney's shot came off the arm of Joe Wright. The whistler pointed to the spot after the check and captain O'Hara sent his namesake the wrong way to put Saints back in front.

Mark O'Hara scores from the penalty spot

The VAR drama wasn't over though with MacDermid called over to the screen in added time at the end of the half with Rooney and Wright involved again. This time the Kilmarnock defender appeared to strike the Buddies full-back as they awaited a Killie corner. The referee showed Wright a straight red for violent conduct and the visitors were reduced to 10 men.

The Buddies were forced into a change at the half-time interval with Olusanya unable to continue after a thigh injury. He was replaced by James Scott and the forward nodded into the net early after the restart, but the ball had gone out before Rooney had managed to swing it back into the area.

Kilmarnock drew level with 20 minutes remaining when Watkins got his and the visitors' second of the game. The forward was first to a Kennedy corner and he nodded beyond Ellery Balcombe to equalise. The goal prompted the final changes for the Buddies with Kevin Van Veen on for his St Mirren debut in place of Idowu, while Caolan Boyd-Munce made way for Dennis Adeniran.

Alex Gogic was agonisingly close with a header on 81 minutes that came off the post while Adeniran dragged a low shot wide from 20 yards as the game headed to its end.

Saints thought they'd won it at the death when Scott prodded home from close range. O'Hara's corner met Gogic whose header was forced on by Ayunga and it fell to Scott who knocked into the net. But the joy was short-lived when the referee was called to the VAR monitor for the third time in the game and ruled it out for a foul by Marcus Fraser on David Watson.

Visitor Information

  • Electronic Ticketing System

At the SMiSA Stadium we have an electronic ticketing system in place at the turnstiles.

The process of using the system is fairly straight-forward and easy to use:

    • On entering the turnstile you will see the ticket reader.
    • Place your match ticket (with the barcode or QR code facing upwards) or smartcard – into the aperture
    • Once the ticket/smartcard is accepted into the system the green light will illuminate and an audio alert will sound after which you should hear the turnstile being unlocked
    • Push the turnstile gate and enter the stadium as you normally would.

The whole process will only take a few seconds.

Please note that there will be stewards in attendance to help where required.

  • Street Parking on Matchday

The Club has been made aware of problems occasioned by inconsiderate parking in the area of Tannahill Road.

Seemingly supporters are parking despite the presence of double yellow lines and as a consequence local bus routes are also being blocked because streets in this area are narrow and fans are parking on both sides. People, many of whom are elderly, are having to walk from Greenhill Road to their homes because buses can’t get access.

Residents who have cars parked in driveways are experiencing similar difficulties getting their vehicles in and out. On being approached by local residents some supporters have been somewhat aggressive which could lead to confrontation.

St Mirren Football Club strives to be a good neighbour and we would ask that ALL supporters attending the stadium not only park in accordance with local parking restrictions but also give consideration to the needs of local residents by parking sensibly so as not to occasion an unnecessary obstruction.

  • Picking Up & Dropping Off by Car on Match Day

We are also aware of problems with patrons parking at the front of the Main Stand to pick up disabled supporters at the end of the game. This area is a 'no parking' zone on match days (with cones on the road) and has to be kept clear for emergency access. It is an inappropriate location for disabled spectator uplifts, as not only does it cause an obstruction on the road, it also causes a danger to pedestrians leaving the stadium.

Please note that the designated pick-up/drop off points are either in Drums Avenue or the two lay-byes on Ferguslie Park Avenue.

Kevin Van Veen links up with Saints after deadline day signing

Kevin Van Veen met up with his St Mirren teammates last week after arriving in Paisley following his deadline day move to the Buddies.

The 33-year-old Dutch forward joined Saints on loan until the end of the season from Eredivisie side FC Groningen.

Speaking on his first day at the club, Kevin told stmirren.com: "It's been good. I left Scotland about a year ago and I had reached a lot of highs that season [at Motherwell] with 29 goals.

"I made a move and due to some private reasons, I had a lot going on so I couldn't really focus on football, but I've got a bit of light at the end of that tunnel so I feel like I am ready to go again.

I like the manager's vision and his passion for the game and he told me he was really keen to bring me in. I feel a really good connection with him and I think he will help me get back to who I was.

"I'm ready to be back and show everybody who I was at Motherwell. I look forward to working with my teammates."

St Mirren x UWS | Bold new chapter in the relationship between sport and academia

St Mirren Football Club and the University of the West of Scotland (UWS) have kicked off a partnership that hopes to change the relationship between sport and education in Scotland.

In a bold move set to drive innovation both on the pitch and in the classroom, the two historic Paisley institutions have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will see students stepping into the heart of a professional football club and gaining unparalleled industry experience.

The MoU underscores the mutual intent of St Mirren FC and UWS to work closely together to achieve two primary goals: to enrich the learning and research opportunities available to UWS students and staff, and to support St Mirren improve standards across all facets of the club.

Keith Lasley, St Mirren Football Club's Chief Operating Officer, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership: "This agreement with UWS is a key milestone for St Mirren as we continue to build on our ambitions both on and off the field.

"The opportunity to collaborate with one of Scotland’s leading universities will not only enhance our football operations but also contribute to the broader development of the club. We look forward to working closely with UWS to deliver tangible benefits for our players, staff, and supporters.

This partnership helps strengthen our ongoing commitment to our club strategy and aligns with our Paisley, People and Performance pillars."

Principal and Vice-Chancellor of UWS, Professor James Miller said: "Both St Mirren and UWS are passionate and proud of Paisley and the partnership represents a bold new chapter in the relationship between sport and academia, one that promises to deliver substantial benefits for all involved.

By enhancing learning experiences we can offer our students direct access to a professional sports environment and equip them with invaluable skills and knowledge that will prepare them for successful careers.

"This collaboration embodies our commitment to delivering opportunities that complement our academic programmes and contributes to the professional development of our students."

For St Mirren, the partnership with UWS is a vital component of its strategy to drive excellence and innovation across all departments. By integrating the academic expertise and resources of UWS, the club aims to enhance the quality of its football operations and business infrastructure. This collaboration is expected to deliver substantial benefits, including the introduction of new coaching techniques, the application of cutting-edge sports science.

For UWS, the MoU represents a significant opportunity to expand the scope of student and staff engagement with industry. By aligning with a professional football club of St Mirren's calibre, UWS can offer unique, real-world learning experiences that will prepare its students for careers in sport and beyond.

Dr Mark Carroll, Lecturer in Sport at UWS, expressed his delight at the partnership: "This collaboration with St Mirren is a fantastic opportunity for our students and staff to engage with the professional sporting world in a meaningful way.

By working together, we can create a dynamic learning environment that enhances our students' education and research experiences, while also contributing to the success of St Mirren Football Club."

Part of the agreement will see St Mirren fund two research projects – a PhD and an MRes. The MRes aims to assess how effective the psychosocial player development programme we've recently helped introduce at the club has been. The PhD focuses on providing long-term, personalised support to the academy's staff in delivering the programme.

Commenting on these two research projects, Dr Carroll said: "Together, this work will help create a culture of psychological well-being at the club, supporting St. Mirren's young players in achieving success both on and off the pitch."
