Points shared in four goal draw at Dundee

St Mirren picked up a point in Dundee with the spoils shared in an exciting four goal contest.

Toyosi Olusanya and Mikael Mandron twice had Saints ahead, but goals from Curtis Main and Ziyad Larkeche for the hosts saw the sides share a point.

There were three changes for the Buddies with Caolan Boyd-Munce returning from injury in place of Alex Iacovitti, with Alex Gogic moving back to centre-half. Scott Tanser and Mandron also came in for Jaden Brown and Jonah Ayunga who dropped to the bench. There was no place for deadline day signing Kevin Van Veen who will join up with the squad next week.

Stephen Robinson's men started brightly with a dangerous low ball from Rooney falling just behind Olusanya who would have had a tap in. A minute later Olusanya's flick on found Mandron who had beaten the offside trap to get in ahead of the Dundee defence, but goalkeeper Jon McCraken was out quickly to block before gathering the loose ball.

Olusanya nipped in ahead of the Dundee defender but the referees indicated that the forward handled in the build up so it wouldn't have counted had he scored. Curtis Main came close for the hosts with their first chance just after 20 minutes when he diverted a low Mo Sylla shot just by the post.

Olusanya was causing problems for the Dundee defence and it was his determination that would see him open the scoring on 26 minutes. Marcus Fraser hooked a ball over the top and the forward's strength got him ahead of Antonio Portales to run through on goal. Olusanya composed himself before slotting through the legs of McCracken.

Saints lead was short-lived though when Main levelled four minutes later. The ex-Saints striker beat Richard Taylor to reach a long ball over the top and he fired beyond Ellery Balcombe to level. Still Saints were forcing the issues with Olusanya a particular nuisance and he could have given the Buddies the lead for a second time when he raced on to a lovely low pass from Taylor, but McCracken was out well to block.

The Buddies would go back in front though with Mandron scoring from distance to restore our advantage on 36 minutes. It was a terrific strike from the number nine as he lashed a half volley into the net from 20 yards.

Mikael Mandron celebrates his goal against Dundee

Dundee came close to levelling early in the second-half when Portales headed a Sammy Braybrooke free-kick just wide of the right-hand post. The hosts would equalise for a second time nine minutes after the restart when Ziyad Larkeche finished off a nice passing move from the hosts. Lyall Cameron threaded the ball through for the wing-back who finished low into the far corner.

Simon Murray almost put the home side ahead on 66 minutes when he managed to race clear on goal, but goalkeeper Balcombe made a wonderful one-handed save to block. Balcombe's task was easier 10 minutes later when Main's header was put straight into his arms.

After a spell of Dundee pressure, Stephen Robinson made changes with Brown, Dennis Adeniran, Elvis Bwomono and Ayunga all introduced. The substitutions helped give Saints more impetus and with seven minutes added it was the Buddies who arguably looked more likely to snatch a winner. There were appeals for a penalty when Bwomono went down after trying to meet Iacovitti's header on, but the referee and VAR both said no as the points were shared heading into the international break.

Ethan Sutherland leaves to join Wolverhampton Wanderers

St Mirren Football Club can confirm that Ethan Sutherland has joined English Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers on a permanent transfer subject to clearance.

The St Mirren Youth Academy graduate departs the club for an undisclosed fee with potential for significant adds on and a future sell on.

The 18-year-old made his Saints first-team debut in July 2023 as a substitute against Montrose in the Premier Sports Cup. He would make a further appearance against Arbroath the following week.

Ethan joined League One side Alloa Athletic on loan in January for the remainder of the 2023/24 season and impressed as the Wasps reached the play-offs.

Ethan was involved in the first-team fold upon his return in the summer and was named in the matchday squad for all four of our UEFA Conference League matches. He would make his first appearance of the season as a substitute against Dundee United in the Premier Sports Cup and came on in Sunday’s William Hill Premiership match against Celtic.

Manager Stephen Robinson said: "Ethan made it clear he wasn’t going to sign with us at the end of the season so it would have been a compensation package.

"You’re always at the mercy of these bigger clubs. It’s a brilliant move for him to a fantastic club and Wolves have got a player with a lot of potential.

"When I first came into the club there were people thinking twice about keeping him on but with his ability and raw talent it was imperative that we kept him and developed him. It’s credit to the academy staff and now the first team staff that have strengthened him. We wish him nothing but good luck.

"Unfortunately, that’s the nature of the game. You lose a lot of good young players at this age. It’s part of the model of the football club. We sell players, we bring the next players through.

"We’ve worked very hard at putting structures in place in the academy that these players are coming physically and mentally ready and we’re starting to see the fruit of that with Fraser Taylor and Luke Kenny as well Kieran Offord and Lewis Jamieson out on loan. These players are being put out for the reason that we bring them back next season and they play a large part of our first-team squad."

Everyone at St Mirren thanks Ethan for his time at the club and wish him the very best of luck in his future career.

The Opposition

Dundee have had a strong start to their season, having won one and drawn two of their opening three William Hill Premiership fixtures this season and progressing in the Premier Sports Cup.

Tony Docherty's side picked up a point after a 2-2 draw in an opening day derby clash away to Dundee United. The Dee followed that up with a 3-1 victory at home to Hearts the following weekend. They come into Saturday's match off the back of a 2-2 draw with Hibernian at Easter Road with Simon Murray's late goal ensuring a share of the spoils for the Dee.

Dundee secured their passage into the quarter-finals of the Premier Sports Cup with an emphatic 6-1 win over Championship side Airdrieonians.

The last meeting between Saints and Dundee was in May at the Scot Foam Stadium. Alex Gogic, Scott Tanser and Toyosi Olusanya all netted to have the Buddies 3-0 up. Despite Michael Mellon pulling one back for the hosts, Saints ran out deserved winners in what was manager Stephen Robinson's 100th match in charge.

Defeat for St Mirren at The SMiSA Stadium

St Mirren were beaten by Celtic on matchday three in the William Hill Premiership.

An early Callum McGregor goal was added to by a Reo Hatate strike a few minutes before half-time. Alistair Johnston added a third for the visitors with just over 20 minutes remaining to consign Saints to defeat.

New signing Killian Phillips made his debut from the start after joining from Crystal Palace earlier this week. Manager Stephen Robinson was also able to bring captain Mark O'Hara back into the starting eleven after injury. Those were among five changes for Saints with Richard Taylor, Jonah Ayunga and Jaden Brown also coming in for Scott Tanser, Roland Idowu, Oisin Smyth, Fraser Taylor and Mikael Mandron.

Killian Phillips made his Saints debut

The visitors struck first with the opening attack. There were just three minutes on the clock when McGregor scored from distance. The Celtic captain rifled a low strike into the bottom right hand corner from 20 yards leaving Ellery Balcombe with no chance.

The Saints' goalkeeper was called into action a little less than 10 minutes later when he made an impressive double save from Hatate and Adam Idah. The stopper denied Idah again on 22 minutes when the forward had found himself in on goal, but Balcombe stuck a foot out to block.

Celtic would add a second on 33 minutes when Hatate doubled the visitors' advantage. Johnston's switch met the head of Daizen Maeda who had got ahead of Shaun Rooney. The Japanese forward nodded down into the path of countryman Hatate who lashed into the net via the far post.

Buddies boss Stephen Robinson made two changes at the break with Idowu and Mandron introduced in place of Alex Gogic, who picked up an early first-half booking, and Ayunga.

Saints would have their first real attempt at goal 10 minutes after the restart when Jaden Brown let fly from distance, but his strike was straight into the arms of Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.

Balcombe was alert to substitute Kyogo Furuhashi's danger when the striker got in on goal with the goalkeeper was out quickly to turn the first time effort over. But Celtic would add a third on 71 minutes. Substitute Nicholas Kühn worked his way in from the right and picked out Johnston who had time to switch the ball onto his right foot before thumping high into the net.
