Saints win at Ibrox for first time since 1991

St Mirren defeated Rangers at Ibrox for the first time since 1991 as goals from Mikael Mandron and Toyosi Olusanya saw the Buddies deservedly win 2-0 in Govan.

A strong first-half performance saw Saints go in level at the break and they got their rewards in the second 45 when Mandron and Olusanya struck to ensure a famous win on the third anniversary of manager Stephen Robinson's appointment.

There was one change to the side that drew with Hibernian last weekend as Jonah Ayunga came in for Toyosi Olusanya. And it was the Kenyan forward who was presented with a brilliant early opportunity to put Saints ahead with just eight minutes on the clock. Jack Butland sent a low clearance straight to the feet of the Ayunga. He took a touch before his powerful strike was pushed away by the Rangers goalkeeper who got two strong hands behind it. The rebound fell to Mikael Mandron who took it first time with Butland tipping over.

Rangers forced a saved from Zach Hemming a few minutes later when Vaclav Cerny got a shot away, but it was straight at the stopper.

Some loose play in the Saints defence saw Rangers steal the ball around 25 yards from goal with Hamza Igamane firing over. The Rangers forward was shown a straight red card as the game approached half-time when he went in hard on Saints skipper Mark O'Hara. But referee Kevin Clancy was advised to have a look at the incident again on the pitchside monitor by the VAR and he downgraded to a yellow.

The Buddies started the second-half with the same intent that they showed in the first. Caolan Boyd-Munce was inches away from seeing his cross sneak into the top corner of the net on 48 minutes.

And the Saints' would hit the front just three minutes later when Mandron fired home. Hemming launched it forward, Ayunga won his header to send Mandron clear and he blasted beyond Butland. It was initially disallowed as the referee believed the striker had fouled Clinton Nsiala but a long VAR check showed the 'Gers defender had clipped his own heels and the goal was given.

That sparked Rangers into some action with Nicolas Raskin seeing a long-range effort pushed away by Hemming just before the hour mark before Cerny drilled a powerful strike wide four minutes later.

Stephen Robinson made a triple change on 65 minutes and one of the subs, Olusanya, would send Saints into dreamland when he doubled our advantage. Killian Phillips flipped the ball over the top and Olusanya outmuscled Nsiala to strike beyond Butland to make it 2-0.

Marcus Fraser was inches away from adding a third with a little over 10 minutes to go when he headed just over from a corner, but two would do as Saints completed our first back-to-back wins over the Light Blues since 1980.

St Mirren Football Club saddened by passing of Cammy Murray

St Mirren Football Club is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of our former captain Cammy Murray.

A true St Mirren legend, Cammy, who played as a defender during his time at the Buddies, joined the club from Drumchapel Amateurs in 1962 and made his Saints debut in a 3-3 draw against Hibernian at Love Street.

During a 10 year spell in Paisley, Cammy made a total of 417 appearances in the black and white and was a part of the famous 1967-68 Second Division Championship winning side.

Between August 1964 and April 1967, Cammy featured in 131 matches in all competitions - the record for most consecutive competitive appearances for St Mirren. He also holds the record for most consecutive league appearances after playing 170 league matches in a row between August 1962 and April 1967.

After a decade with the Buddies, Cammy would move on to Motherwell before ending his playing career at Arbroath.

In 2019, Cammy was honoured for his service to St Mirren when he was inducted into the club's Hall of Fame.

The thoughts of everyone at St Mirren are with Cammy's loved ones at this difficult time.

The Opposition

Philippe Clement's men bounced back from their shock Scottish Cup exit at home to Queen's Park with a 3-1 win away to Hearts on Sunday. That maintained the Ibrox side's good form in the league, having won their last five in the William Hill Premiership. They sit in second place - 13 points behind leaders Celtic.

Saints picked up a first league win over Rangers since 2011 when Caolan Boyd-Munce's injury-time goal saw us defeat the Gers 2-1 in Paisley on Boxing Day.

The Buddies were edged out on our last visit to Ibrox, losing 2-1 in October. Alex Gogic put Saints level after Rangers had taken an early lead. But Vaclav Cerny would score a winner for the Light Blues in the second-half.

Saints move back into top six after a point against Hibernian

St Mirren picked up a point to move back into the top six after a goalless draw against Hibernian at The SMiSA Stadium.

The Buddies had the better of the match, but couldn't find a breakthrough against one of the form teams in the league as Hibernian stretched their unbeaten run to 12.

Stephen Robinson elected to name the same starting eleven from Monday night's Scottish Cup tie against Hearts with Scott Tanser unable to make it after an epidural during the week.

A bright start saw Caolan Boyd-Munce have a shot blocked on 10 minutes with Killian Phillips' follow-up held by Hibernian goalkeeper Jordan Smith. But despite Saints having the better of the game, it was Hibernian who had best chance of the opening 45 when Warren O'Hora got a free header on a Nicky Cadden corner, but he sent the effort wide of target.

Saints came out of the traps after the break. Mikael Mandron forced a save from Smith with a long-range strike that the Hibernian goalkeeper got two hands behind to hold on 51 minutes. The Hibernian stopper then made a brilliant double save two minutes later. Mandron's slide rule pass found Toyosi Olusanya who burst clear of Rocky Bushiri and fired low from the angle. Smith blocked before getting a strong hand on Mark O'Hara's rebound that looked prime to put Saints ahead.

Olusanya came close to opening the scoring on 53 minutes

With 15 minutes remaining, referee Ross Hardie awarded Hibernian a penalty kick as he wrongly believe O'Hora's header came off Killian Phillips' hand. A VAR check followed and the referee overturned the decision after it was shown that the ball struck Phillips' head.

The visitors were reduced to 10 men when debutant Alasana Manneh was shown a second yellow card for a foul after clattering into the back of Phillips in the middle of the park. But despite the man advantage, Saints were unable to find a way of turning one point into three.

Embrace top six push says manager

St Mirren manager Stephen Robinson has told his players to embrace the challenge of a top six push as Saints head into the final eight games before the split.

Expectations have risen at the club after two consecutive top six finishes and the manager says things are positive in the Saints camp with his side sitting just one point off sixth place in the William Hill Premiership.

But Robinson insists there's nothing to lose for his Buddies and they should enjoy the opportunity available to them over the next eight matches.

Embracing the challenge

"There’s no pressure on us," the manager told the media.

If St Mirren get in the top six three years in a row, then I’ve told all the staff, I’m going to make statues of them. It is that big an achievement to do that three years in a row. So we’ve absolutely nothing to lose.

"We’re in a really good position. This can still be a fantastic season.

"As I say, if we were able to get top six three years in a row, then it would be an incredible achievement for this group of players. They’ve been there. They’ve played under the pressure. But this isn’t pressure. I’ve reiterated this to all the players.

"This is not pressure. Pressure is when you’re fighting for your life to stay up, you’re in a play-off in the last game of the season to keep people in their jobs.

This is the bit you go and enjoy, enjoy trying to look up a league, enjoy beating teams that people expect you to lose to, and go and get the results. We haven’t got the results. We’ve got performances over the last month without picking up the amount of results we should have done.

"We’re limiting teams to very, very few opportunities against us and getting punished for one goal, so that luck can’t keep being there all the time. Something has to go in our favour, and if we keep getting into areas, things will turn our way."

Confident Opponent

Saints have faced Hibernian twice this and came out on the winning side on both occasions. But on Sunday, the Buddies face a confident opponent with David Gray's men on an 11 match unbeaten run.

However, the manager believes that a similar performance from Monday night will give his side an a good opportunity to pick up three points.

"They've got some very talented players. They've got threats all over the pitch and they've got a good squad.

"It was a while ago that we played Hibs and they are on a fantastic run now. David has done a really good job in turning the form around so we have to be prepared.

"They've not changed personnel massively, but they're confident. They're a side that is going into the game against us with confidence.

If we put in the performance that we did against Hearts on Monday night then we have a very good chance of winning the game."

Stephen Robinson Pre-Hibernian

Squad Update

The manager also gave an update on the squad. It's likely to be as you were from Monday night with Conor McMenamin remaining out, while Alex Iacovitti and Scott Tanser are also doubts.

"We'll still be without Conor. He's still a good few weeks away. Alex is back in training, but had a slight little setback last week so we're hoping by Monday he'll be join in properly.

"Scott Tanser had an epidural. He's not trained all week so I'm not sure whether he will be available or not."
