Narrow loss as Saints beaten by Dundee United

Saints head into the international break following defeat to Dundee United at The SMiSA Stadium.

In a game lacking in quality, the decisive moment came from a quarter of an hour from the end. Ellery Balcombe did well to parry Ross Docherty's piledriver, but could do nothing to stop Emmanuel Adegboyega – guilty of missing a sitter in the first half – from rushing in to net the rebound.

Saints had almost made a spectacular opening to the game as Richard Taylor acrobatically sent a corner over the bar in the opening 60 seconds. However, that wasn't a sign of things to come and things soon began to settle down, Will Ferry firing an effort well over for the visitors. A Budies free-kick then almost created a chance, keeper Jack Walton opting to punch the ball rather than catch it and Caolan Boyd-Munce crossed for Killian Phillips, however he couldn't connect properly and Walton gathered.

Seconds later United should have been ahead. A free-kick was headed on by Ross Graham and everyone apart from Adegboyega seemed to stop, however he only managed a fresh air swipe at the ball and Saints scrambled it clear. There were some half-hearted penalty appeals from the home fans when Toyosi Olusanya exchanged passes with van Veen and then went down as he entered the box, but ref Ross Hardie was unmoved.

Taylor smashed over at another corner before Roland Idowu did well to fashion himself an opening, but his shot was always going wide. The opening 45 minutes were well summed up as the half drew to a close when a penalty box scramble gave Sam Dalby a sight of goal but his shot was blocked by one of his United team mates.

There were loud penalty shouts from the away fans early in the second half when Taylor blocked Luca Stephenson's header but the officials deemed it wasn't handball. Boyd-Munce then tried his luck from 25 yards and was unlucky to see his piledriver kept out by a tremendous Walton save, Olusanya unable to force home the rebound. Ellery Balcombe's had a rather more straightforward job a few moments later when it came to dealing with Stephenson's header.

Phillips curled one wide from the edge of the box as Saints threatened again, another chance coming when Mark O'Hara's corner was headed back across goal by Phillips but Olusanya could only nod over the bar.

Toyosi Olusanya comes close to scoring for Saints

However, with 15 minutes left it was United who took the lead, a corner dropping perfectly for Ross Docherty at the edge of the box and while Balcombe kept it out, he could do nothing as Adegboyega netted the rebound to make up for his earlier miss.

Sub James Scott turned and shot over from the edge of the box as Saints looked to respond quickly, Phillips then doing likewise from a bit closer in. Sub Oisin Smyth did find the target with his attempt but it was easy for Walton. Six minutes of stoppage time provided some hope for the Buddies but Taylor heading over from Smyth's cross was as good as it got.

Visitor Information

  • Electronic Ticketing System

At the SMiSA Stadium we have an electronic ticketing system in place at the turnstiles.

The process of using the system is fairly straight-forward and easy to use:

    • On entering the turnstile you will see the ticket reader.
    • Place your match ticket (with the barcode or QR code facing upwards) or smartcard – into the aperture
    • Once the ticket/smartcard is accepted into the system the green light will illuminate and an audio alert will sound after which you should hear the turnstile being unlocked
    • Push the turnstile gate and enter the stadium as you normally would.

The whole process will only take a few seconds.

Please note that there will be stewards in attendance to help where required.

  • Street Parking on Matchday

The Club has been made aware of problems occasioned by inconsiderate parking in the area of Tannahill Road.

Seemingly supporters are parking despite the presence of double yellow lines and as a consequence local bus routes are also being blocked because streets in this area are narrow and fans are parking on both sides. People, many of whom are elderly, are having to walk from Greenhill Road to their homes because buses can’t get access.

Residents who have cars parked in driveways are experiencing similar difficulties getting their vehicles in and out. On being approached by local residents some supporters have been somewhat aggressive which could lead to confrontation.

St Mirren Football Club strives to be a good neighbour and we would ask that ALL supporters attending the stadium not only park in accordance with local parking restrictions but also give consideration to the needs of local residents by parking sensibly so as not to occasion an unnecessary obstruction.

  • Picking Up & Dropping Off by Car on Match Day

We are also aware of problems with patrons parking at the front of the Main Stand to pick up disabled supporters at the end of the game. This area is a 'no parking' zone on match days (with cones on the road) and has to be kept clear for emergency access. It is an inappropriate location for disabled spectator uplifts, as not only does it cause an obstruction on the road, it also causes a danger to pedestrians leaving the stadium.

Please note that the designated pick-up/drop off points are either in Drums Avenue or the two lay-byes on Ferguslie Park Avenue.

Match Preview: St Mirren v Dundee United (5th Oct)

Saints return to The SMiSA Stadium on Saturday to play host to Dundee United ahead of the October international break.

Stephen Robinson's men lost narrowly away to Motherwell on Saturday, but currently sit in sixth place in the William Hill Premiership after two wins, two draws and three defeats from our first seven matches. The two wins have both come at home with victories against Edinburgh sides Hearts (2-1) and Hibernian (3-0).

It'll be our last home match for over three weeks with the upcoming international break soon followed by away trips to Hearts and Rangers.

The Opposition

It's been a decent start to life back in the William Hill Premiership for Dundee United, with the Arabs losing only one of their six league matches since promotion back to the top flight. That came after a 1-0 defeat at home to Rangers last month.

Of the other five matches, Jim Goodwin's men have won two and drawn three. One of those draws came last weekend with United coming from 3-1 down to draw 3-3 away to Kilmarnock.

The two sides have already met this season with United edging Saints out of the Premier Sports Cup at the last 16 stage. Ross Graham's first-half goal was enough to give the Arabs a 1-0 win at Tannadice.

St Mirren were unbeaten against United during season 2022/23 - winning twice and drawing once. The first win was at Tannadice with Saints running out 3-0 victors in August 2022. The Buddies followed that up with a 2-1 win at The SMiSA Stadium two months later. The last league meeting between the two ended up stalemate after a 1-1 draw at Tannadice in March 2023.

The Officials

The referee on Saturday is Ross Hardie and he'll be assisted by Frank Connor and Paul O'Neill.

Greg Aitken is once again on VAR duty, having been the video assistant referee in our match against Motherwell last weekend.

Peter Hartley appointed as Head of First Team Transition and Loan Pathways

St Mirren Football Club is delighted to announce the appointment of Peter Hartley as our new Head of First Team Transition and Loan Pathways.

The 36-year-old takes the role vacated by Brian Kerr who was named as assistant manager last week.

As a player, Peter began his career at Sunderland before moving to Hartlepool United in 2009. The Englishman would have spells at Stevenage, Plymouth Argyle, Bristol Rovers and Blackpool before moving north to work with Saints manager Stephen Robinson at Motherwell.

After leaving Motherwell, Peter joined Indian Super League side Jamshedpur where he stayed for two years before returning to his hometown club Hartlepool. Following a short stay at Hartlepool, Peter moved to India once again to sign for newly formed I-League side Inter Kashi. He announced his retirement from playing in August of this year.

Speaking to stmirren.com, Peter told of his excitement of taking on the new role: "I spoke to the manager, Keith Lasley and Brian Kerr. It's been a very easy transition for me and I'm happy to be here.

The manager has really high standards but I knew that coming in. I know exactly what he is about and with me being a young coach, making the transition from playing, I don't think there is a better person to learn from.

"I'm going to be the link between the academy and the first team. I'll help with the manager and Brian to put on first team training sessions.

"We had a bounce game on Monday and I got a chance to see some of the quality coming through so I'm very eager to work with them and improve them even more.

"There's a good setup, a very good group of players with good attitude and coachable so I'm excited to get going."

Peter Hartley on the training pitch

Manager Stephen Robinson said: "Peter was my captain at Motherwell and I stayed in touch with him in terms of his progression as a coach.

"He's an ex-player with a lot of experience, close with the dressing room and only just finished playing a year ago after a good career.

"He's coached in India, he's worked under the Atletico Madrid banner as well for a team that was associated in India and he's been working at Sunderland with the younger age groups as well so certainly fits the profile for that role.

We spoke to numerous people. We wanted somebody that had coaching experience but was also still aligned with the dressing room. We also wanted someone that had worked in a development role and had the relevant qualifications which Peter certainly does.

"He comes with a really good history of playing and understands what it takes to be a professional footballer in Scotland.

"He will work every day with the first team and the biggest thing is to bridge the gap between the under 18s and the first team. He'll manage the loan players, to ensure all the aspects that we believe will develop those players for now and further down the line. It's a big role for the club and important we've got the right person."

Chief Operating Officer Keith Lasley added: "The club has made significant progress on and off the pitch over the last couple of years.

In order for the club to continue to compete and grow, we must establish and deliver a long-term, strategic plan for player development. The creation of this new role, and the appointment of Peter, is another key step in implementing this at St Mirren."
