Match Preview: St Mirren v Rangers (26th Dec)

It's Saints' penultimate match of 2024 as we play host to Rangers in the William Hill Premiership on Boxing Day.

Stephen Robinson's men go into Thursday's fixture on the back of two away wins on the bounce following victories away to Ross County and St Johnstone. A late winner from Oisin Smyth in Dingwall saw the Saints solidify their place in sixth place in the William Hill Premiership, moving five points ahead of Dundee.

The Opposition

Rangers moved into second place in the William Hill Premiership after defeating Dundee 1-0 at Ibrox on Saturday. Vaclav Cerny's early second-half goal was enough to give the Light Blues their fourth league victory on the bounce to move above Aberdeen.

Like Saints, Philippe Clement's men have won their last two away matches in the William Hill Premiership with both ironically also coming against Ross County (3-0) and St Johnstone (1-0).

Saints were edged out in the only meeting between the two sides this season. Alex Gogic scored at Ibrox to draw the Buddies level after Mohamed Diomande had given Rangers the lead. But Vaclav Cerny scored a winner with just over 20 minutes remaining as Rangers won 2-1. The Gers also won 2-1 on their last visit to The SMiSA Stadium back in April with Cyriel Dessers scoring in the closing stages after Mikael Mandron had put Saints level in the first-half.

Our last league victory against the Ibrox side came on Christmas Eve 2011 when goals from Aaron Mooy and Paul McGowan saw the Buddies triumph 2-1 at The SMiSA Stadium.

Smyth stunner gives Saints festive three points

Oisin Smyth's stunning late free-kick saw 10 man St Mirren pick up a festive three points away to Ross County.

Alex Iacovitti gave Saints a first-half lead against his former side. But the Staggies levelled immediately following the interval when Michee Efete scored to make it 1-1. The hosts then had a man advantage when Scott Tanser was shown a second yellow card for the Buddies. But despite the deficit in numbers, it was Saints who looked most likely to grab a winner and they did so in sensational fashion when Smyth fired home a wonderful free-kick on 89 minutes to give Stephen Robinson's men a 2-1 victory.

There were two injury enforced changes from the side that defeated St Johnstone last weekend. Captain Mark O'Hara missed out after a re-occurence of a thigh injury, while Conor McMenamin was also unavailable after a knock sustained in the win over the Perth Saints. That meant starts for Smyth and last weekend's winner Roland Idowu. Alex Gogic was back available following his suspension but had to settle for a place on the bench.

Conditions were tough at the Global Energy Stadium with 50 mile per hour winds and driving rain making it difficult for both sides. Elvis Bwomono trying to use the conditions to his advantage swinging in an early cross that swirled its way on to the head of Mikael Mandron but the forward was always on the stretch as he nodded over.

Mandron was involved again when Saints had their best chance of the opening stages. There was just 10 minutes of the clock when the forward sent Idowu scurrying forward on the counter. The hosts managed to get bodies back but Idowu held the ball long enough for support to join him and he picked out Killian Phillips with a low ball into the box. The midfielder couldn't get enough purchase on it and that allowed Jack Hamilton to gather comfortably.

Scott Tanser was first into the book after just 13 minutes following a late challenge on Scott Allardice. The full-back was penalised for another foul two minutes later after a push and that presented County with a good free-kick opportunity a little over 20 yards from goal. Noah Chilvers took but sent it well over. It was Chilvers who would have the game's next opportunity and he came closer to putting the home side in front this time when he sent his shot just wide of Ellery Balcombe's left-hand post.

Saints would hit the front with Iacovitti scoring against his former side on 27 minutes. A foul on Richard Taylor saw the Buddies presented with a free-kick opportunity on the left-hand side. Tanser and Smyth stood over it but it was the latter who went for the near post. It was pushed away by County goalkeeper Hamilton but only as far as Iacovitti who forced home to score his third goal of the season.

Alex Iacovitti scores against Ross County

Saints looked hungry for more with Phillips having a powerful strike blocked on the half hour mark.

But Ross County drew level less than a minute after the restart. Taylor couldn't get enough on his attempted clearance of Efete's header which saw the ball fall straight back to the County man who slotted home from close-range to equalise.

Frustration grew for Saints when they were then reduced to 10 men just 10 minutes later as Tanser was shown a second yellow card. The wing-back had taken a heavy touch and when he slid in to win the ball back, Aidan Denholm went down under the challenge and referee Iain Snedden quickly produced the yellow to see the full-back given his marching orders.

But despite that setback it was the Buddies who looked the more likely to make something happen in the game. Smyth sent a free-kick over from 25 yards before Idowu came mightily close after brilliantly driving into the County box, only for his effort to be deflected wide.

Saints were denied a penalty on 73 minutes when Efete appeared to handle the ball to block Iacovitti's shot. Iacovitti screamed for a penalty and the stadium announcer confirmed that a VAR check was ongoing for a potential penalty. But VAR Greg Aitken decided there was nothing in it. It was then County's turn to have a penalty claim waved away by VAR when Eamonn Brophy went down under a challenge from Taylor.

Smyth came close to putting us in front on 78 minutes when he curled just wide of target. Two minutes later, substitute Jonah Ayunga's powerful shot forced a good save from Hamilton.

There was yet another strong penalty claim for St Mirren when Killian Phillips was bundled down inside the box as he was about to get his shot away. Again it was checked by the VAR but no penalty was forthcoming much to the bemusement of Stephen Robinson and his players.

But the deserved breakthrough would come in the final minute of normal time. Ayunga was fouled around 20 yards from goal and Smyth beautifully dispatched the free-kick over the wall and into the net to the delight of the travelling support.

Stephen Robinson praises team ahead of final away day of 2024

Ahead of St Mirren's final away match of 2024, manager Stephen Robinson has praised his side's start to the season given the challenges that have faced the club.

Saints head to Ross County sitting in sixth place in the William Hill Premiership and have won four and drawn one of their last seven league matches. That run includes two wins from our last three away games, the latest of which came last weekend following a dramatic 3-2 win over St Johnstone at McDiarmid Park.

"We're actually in good form in general," the manager said at his pre-match press conference this morning.

Killian Phillips scores against St Johnstone

"Everybody said it was the best start to a season for St Mirren in 35 years last year, we're actually only four points behind that and we've scored a goal more. If you consider everything we've faced, to be sitting where we are, puts into perspective how well this group of players have done.

With the challenges we've faced, we have to be pleased. A lot of players could have used excuses in everything that has been challenging, but they haven't. They've knuckled down, they've improved as we've gone. We've got the system we like and we're getting better with each game."

Ross County challenge

"Ross County are a good side. I watched their game against Hibs and I feel they were very unfortunate. I thought they were excellent in the first-half.

Mikael Mandron passes the ball in action against Ross County

"Like ourselves, Ross County have got good players, they’ve got a good manager as well. And no one goes to Dingwall and has an easy game. You see even the top sides go and struggle there so we know what we will be up against.

It's forecast not to be a nice day either so we have to go there with a mentality that we win at all costs."

Squad Update

Alex Gogic returns to the fold after his suspension caused him to miss last Saturday's win over St Johnstone.

Alex Gogic training

Saints, however, will be without Toyosi Olusanya whose yellow card last week means he is suspended, while a thigh strain sustained last week also sees captain Mark O'Hara ruled out. The manager also confirmed there are doubts over Ellery Balcombe, Scott Tanser, Richard Taylor, Conor McMenamin and Evan Mooney.

"It's been a challenging week." the manager told the media this morning.

Ellery [Balcombe] hasn't trained all week with a knee injury so we'll have to assess him today. Scott Tanser hasn't trained all week. Richard Taylor got stretchered off last week. He isn't quite as bad as we first feared, but again, he hasn't trained, so we need to look at Richard today as well.

Richard Taylor was stretchered off against St Johnstone

"Evan Mooney took a knock to his ankle yesterday in training which we're hoping that he'll be okay with. Conor McMenamin looks like he could be struggling with a kick from the game last week that has really been playing up.

Mark [O'Hara] is going to be four to six weeks we believe after having a scan on him which again isn't quite as bad as we first feared, but it's been a reoccuring injury for Mark which is really frustrating."

Match Preview: Ross County v St Mirren (21st Dec)

Saints are on the road for one last time in 2024 as Stephen Robinson's men head to Dingwall on Saturday to face Ross County in our final away match of the year.

The Buddies head into the match following a dramatic 3-2 win away to St Johnstone last weekend. Killian Phillips' early goal gave Saints a well-earned lead, but second-half strikes from Makenzie Kirk and Benji Kimpioka put the Perth side ahead. 17-year-old Evan Mooney scored his first senior goal with two minutes of normal time remaining to draw Saints level before Roland Idowu's penalty in the ninth minute of stoppage time saw the points return to Paisley.

Saturday's win means Saints have won two of their last three away matches, having beaten Hibernian 2-1 at Easter Road last month.

Match Details

Ross County v St Mirren
Competition: William Hill Premiership
Date: Saturday 21st December 2024
Kick-off: 3pm
Venue: Global Energy Stadium

The Opposition

Ross County sit in ninth place in the William Hill Premiership - six points behind Saints who moved back into sixth after Saturday's win at St Johnstone.

Despite taking the lead through Eli Campbell, Don Cowie's side were beaten 3-1 at Easter Road against Hibernian last time out. That result came off the back of defeats at home to Rangers (0-3) and away to Celtic (0-5). Prior to that, County picked up an important three points when they won 2-1 at home to Motherwell in November.

It was stalemate when the sides met at The SMiSA Stadium last month in what has been the only meeting between the two so far this season. Greg Kiltie's first-half penalty was saved by County 'keeper Ross Laidlaw and neither side could make a breakthrough as it ended 0-0.

Toyosi Olusanya's late leveller saw Saints pick up a point on our last trip to the Global Energy Stadium. Jordan White had given the Staggies an early lead, but Olusanya came off the bench to rescue a point in a 1-1 draw in February.
