"This is everything. We made history." // Jonah Ayunga

Jonah Ayunga wrote himself into the St Mirren history books after his double helped the Buddies win the 2025 Premier Sports Cup.

The striker's second-half brace saw him become the first player in Saints history to score twice in a major Cup Final as the Buddies defeated Celtic 3-1.

Those goals also saw him pick up the Man of the Match award at Hampden on a special afternoon.

"A special day that will be remembered forever." // Stephen Robinson

Manager Stephen Robinson lavished praise on his players and staff after Saints won the Premier Sports Cup following a stunning 3-1 win over Celtic at Barclays Hampden on Sunday.

The Buddies boss led the club to a fifth major honour and our first League Cup triumph since 2013 with goals from Marcus Fraser and a brace from Jonah Ayunga ensuring an historic day at the National Stadium.

Listen to his post-match comments below as he reflected on a special afternoon for St Mirren.

St Mirren win the Premier Sports Cup after brilliant victory over Celtic

St Mirren are your 2025/26 Premier Sports Cup winners!

Stephen Robinson’s men have won the 2025/26 Premier Sports League Cup after defeating Celtic 3-1 at Hampden securing their second ever League Cup, after their 3-2 win over Hearts in 2013.

Marcus Fraser gave us the lead two minutes in before Reo Hatate equalised for Celtic. Two second-half goals from Jonah Ayunga saw us complete a famous victory and lift a fifth national trophy in our history.

The Buddies went into the match as underdogs, despite Celtic’s poor run of form. Stephen Robinson’s message was clear – 'Faith over Fear'.

Team photo prior to kick-off

St Mirren made two changes from their 2-0 win against Dundee United last weekend. Dan Nlundulu and Keanu Baccus came back into the starting line-up with Mikael Mandron, the competition's top scorer with seven goals, and Fraser Taylor on the bench. There was also a place on the bench for club captain Mark O’Hara, who’s last game was in that 4-1 League Cup semi-final victory over Motherwell. Celtic also made two changes. Anthony Ralston and Kelechi Iheanacho came in for Benjamin Nygren and Hyunjun Yang, who dropped to the bench after their midweek defeat to Roma.

On what was a wet and windy day at the National Stadium, it was the Saints who got off to a flying start. An out-swinging corner in the second minute from Baccus was met by captain Fraser, who leapt highest and headed the ball in off the post past Schmeichel to put St Mirren 1-0 up.

Marcus Fraser celebrates after goal against Celtic

Celtic responded with a lot of the ball. Liam Scales had a deep cross from the left hand side found Iheanacho whose header was brilliantly saved by Shamal George in goal. He got down low to push it wide and keep St Mirren in front.

Moments later Nlundulu nearly doubled St Mirren’s lead. A punt up the pitch from Alex Gogic saw Nlundulu and Scales battle for the bouncing ball. Nlundulu shrugged off Scales but his powerful effort was unable to get past Schmeichel.

Nlundulu was at the heart of all that was happening. After a lovely give and go from Declan John and Baccus, John’s low cross found Nlundulu who was unable to put the ball into the back of the net.

Celtic got more into the game after those sequences. Scales slipped through Daizen Maeda, his low cross would’ve found Hatate for a tap in if it wasn’t for some terrific defending from Richard King before George collected it.

Goalscorer Fraser was booked after taking out Maeda. The resulting free-kick was cleared but only as far as Kieran Tierney. His cross from the left side found Hatate who slid in and put the ball back across George’s goal to level for Celtic.

A stop in play as there was an injury to Killian Phillips, with the Irishman all-good to continue. But Celtic were forced into an early change, after Iheanacho pulled up with a hamstring issue and was replaced by Johnny Kenny.

There was a chance just before the half for Baccus. His quick feet allowed him to get past his defender but his shot was smashed over the bar. There was a late scuffle after the half time whistle between Nlundulu and Auston Trusty, resulting in a yellow for both.

Two early chances in the second half for the Buddies. A John free-kick was just missed by Gogic followed by Baccus’s ball into the box was also just missed by Ayunga.

The second half was scrappy but it was St Mirren who produced the first moment of magic. Miguel Freckleton played the ball inside to Nlundulu who laid it back to Gogic on the edge of the box. The Cypriot, playing in midfield, producing one of the assists of the season. With the outside of his boot, he hit a wonderful travella to Ayunga who beat the out rushing Schmeichel to restore St Mirren’s lead.

Jonah Ayunga celebrates goal at Hampden

After a head knock to Ralston both teams made substitutes with Mandron and Jayden Richardson coming on for Conor McMenamin and Nlundulu for the Buddies. Celtic made three changes with the injured Ralston, Tierney and Sebastian Tounekti making way for Colby Donovan, James Forrest and Luke McCowan.

The Saints entered dreamland by adding a third with 15 to go. Freckleton’s long ball found the alert John, with Celtic’s defence falling asleep. John ran through on goal and with two defenders chasing him he unselfishly passed it to Ayunga for his second of the afternoon. Ayunga received a yellow for taking his top off in celebration, not that he cared. Both Ayunga and John were then both replaced by Scott Tanser and Evan Mooney.

Celtic responded with the substitutes Forrest laying the ball off for Donovan. His powerful low driven shot was well saved by George who tipped behind at full-stretch. Arne Engels was then replaced by Yang.

Mooney had a chance to put the game to bed after a Baccus ball sent the youngster past Trusty. His shot was well saved by Schmeichel.

With six minutes added on Celtic kept pushing, with Kenny’s deflected shot was pushed over the bar from George.

The fans were in brilliant spirits all day and when Kevin Clancy blew for full time it was a rapturous roar from the St Mirren end. Jubilation and wild celebrations from the fans, players and staff all followed, as St Mirren were crowned League Cup winners for the second time.

Club captain O’Hara and vice-captain Fraser collected the trophy and lifted it together. The players and staff celebrated with the fans and their loved ones, as they look to continue that celebration long into the night.

Celebration Information

St Mirren have won the Premier Sports Cup! Huge congratulations to Stephen Robinson, his players and all St Mirren staff for their efforts in securing this magnificent achievement for the club.

We are sure people will enjoy celebrating across Paisley and Renfrewshire tonight and we can give supporters an update on planned celebrations taking place this evening.

No open-top bus parade is planned tonight but the team are due to appear on the balcony at Paisley Town Hall at around 7.45pm to show off the trophy to fans. The team will stay at the Town Hall for approximately one hour before departing.

To allow space for crowds to gather, there will be some road closures in Paisley town centre, from around 5.30pm until around 10pm tonight. These will cover:

  • Gauze Street (from Dunn Square to Lawn Street).
  • Abbey Close
  • Bridge Street (from the Bridge Street car park to the entrance to Renfrewshire House on Cotton Street)

All buses which usually follow that route will be diverted via Mill Street/Causeyside Street.

Thank you for your support. Please enjoy your evening safely and responsibly.

St Mirren Chairman John Needham ahead of Premier Sports Cup Final

St Mirren Chairman John Needham spoke to us in the build up to Sunday's Premier Sports Cup Final.

John talked about his excitement ahead of Sunday's showpiece as well as discussing where the club is at off the park and the club's annual report and financial statement for the year end 2025.

Our Road to the Premier Sports Cup Final

St Mirren take on Celtic in the Premier Sports Cup Final at Barclays Hampden on Sunday afternoon.

The Buddies path to the Final started back in July and has seen its fair share of drama as we overcame to odds to reach the showpiece event for the first time since winning the trophy in 2013.

Few may have given Saints the chance of reaching the Final following matchday one in Group D on Saturday 12th July.

Topping Group D

St Mirren were drawn in Group D of the Premier Sports Cup group stage and would face Championship sides Arbroath and Ayr United as well as League Two outfits Annan Athletic and Forfar Athletic.

Matchday one saw us make the journey up to Arbroath on what was billed as Scotland's hottest day of the year. That memo didn't seem to reach the Angus town with the match played in misty conditions at Gayfield Park. A frustrating afternoon saw Saints reduced to 10 men when Mark O'Hara was shown two yellow cards and the match finished 0-0 after 90 minutes. Arbroath would pick up the bonus point after penalties with Fraser Taylor - Player of the Year at the Red Lichties the previous season - having his spot-kick saved by Arbroath goalkeeper Aidan McAdams.

The Buddies bounced back a few days later with a 2-1 victory away to Forfar Athletic thanks to goals from Jayden Richardson and Mikael Mandron before a resounding 8-2 win over Annan Athletic at The SMiSA Stadium. That victory set up a table topping clash with Ayr United in our final match where a Killian Phillips brace helped us to a 2-1 win and progression to the round of 16 as group winners.

Breaking Hearts - Round of 16

Our reward for finishing top of Group D was a home tie against league leaders Heart of Midlothian. The Jam Tarts had made a flying start to the season under their new manager Derek McInnes, but it was Saints who would take a first-half lead when a wonderful strike from Alex Gogic put us ahead at The SMiSA Stadium.

Alex Gogic gives St Mirren the lead against Hearts

The visitors managed to draw themselves level with around 12 minutes of normal time remaining when Oisin McEntee equalised. Neither side could be separated after 120 minutes meaning a penalty shoot-out would be required.

Saints were perfect from the spot with Richard King, Marcus Fraser, Evan Mooney and Roland Idowu all netting. Shamal George's save from Claudio Braga's penalty allowed summer signing Malik Dijksteel to score the winner on his debut to send us through to the last eight.

Final Score: St Mirren 1-1 Hearts (St Mirren win 5-4 on penalties)

Going the Distance - Quarter-Final

A visit to Rugby Park awaited at the quarter-final stage as we took on Kilmarnock. Traditionally not a happy hunting ground for Saints, terrific goals from Mandron and Richardson either side of half-time would twice have us in front, but as was required in the previous round, the Buddies would have to go the distance.

The Buddies were once again flawless from the spot with King, Idowu, Liam Donnelly and Dan Nlundulu all scoring. With George saving from Kyle Magennis, that gave Dijksteel the chance to send the Saints marching on to Hampden and he made no mistake as he slammed home the final spot kick.

Final Score: Kilmarnock 2-2 St Mirren (St Mirren win 5-3 on penalties)

All Saints Day - Semi-Final

Our penalty shoot-out victory over Kilmarnock saw us return to the National Stadium for the first time in almost five years and what stood between us and a place in the Final was a tussle with Motherwell on All Saints Day.

The Buddies were brilliant on the day, racing into a 2-0 lead at half-time thanks to goals from Mandron and Nlundulu. Callum Hendry pulled a late goal back for Motherwell, but King quickly restored our two goal advantage before Mandron put the seal on a famous afternoon to secure our place in the Final.

Final Score: Motherwell 1-4 St Mirren

Road to the Final

St Mirren's Premier Sports Cup journey began in July with Saints drawn in Group D with Annan Athletic, Arbroath, Ayr United and Forfar Athletic. The group started with a 0-0 draw against Championship side Arbroath at Gayfield with the Red Lichties taking the bonus point after winning 5-3 on penalties.

The Buddies bounced back with a 2-1 victory away to Forfar Athletic thanks to goals from Jayden Richardson and Mikael Mandron before a resounding 8-2 win over Annan Athletic at The SMiSA Stadium. That victory set up a table topping clash with Ayr United in our final match where a Killian Phillips brace helped us to a 2-1 win and progression to the round of 16 as group winners.

After topping Group D, Saints were paired with Premiership league leaders Hearts at The SMiSA Stadium. Alex Gogic gave the Buddies a deserved first-half lead with an outstanding scissor kick. Oisin McEntee levelled for the Jambos to take the match to extra-time. Neither side could be separated after 120 minutes meaning a penalty shoot-out would be required. Saints were perfect from the spot with Richard King, Marcus Fraser, Evan Mooney and Roland Idowu all netting. Post-match at Hampden Park

Celtic entered the Premier Sports Cup at the Round of 16 where they faced Falkirk at Celtic Park in August. The Hoops ran out 4-1 winners with goals from Daizen Maeda, Alastair Johnston, Dane Murray and an own goal from Falkirk's Liam Henderson securing safe passage through.

The holders then faced a trip to Firhill in September to face Championship side Partick Thistle. Goals from Hyunjun Yang, Liam Scales, Sebastian Tounekti and Luke McCowan saw Celtic win 4-0 in Glasgow.

Celtic were paired with their rivals Rangers at Hampden Park in the semi-final. Johnny Kenny put the Hoops ahead in the first-half, but Rangers levelled from the penalty spot through James Tavernier despite being down to 10 men. Callum McGregor and Callum Osmand scored in extra-time to send Celtic through.
