Stephen Robinson: It needs to step up

St Mirren manager Stephen Robinson has called on his players to react to Wednesday's defeat to Kilmarnock ahead of a tough trip to Easter Road in the William Hill Premiership.

The Buddies travel through to the capital to face Hibernian following a 4-3 loss at Rugby Park. Wednesday's result saw Kilmarnock - who currently occupy the relegation play-off spot - move to within three points of Saints who remain in ninth.

While Saturday's match away to European chasing Hibernian will provide a tough challenge for Robinson's men, the manager has encouraged his side to produce the same type of performance that saw us beat league leaders Hearts last week.

"We've shown when we go to places like Hibs that we can produce results," he said.

We have to produce that same level of commitment and same level of performance. We're in a dogfight with four or five other teams. There's no hiding away from that.

"It needs to now step up. Stop feeling sorry for yourself. If you've made a mistake, you react to it. If you've lost a game, you react to it. This group of players have proved they're a good side. They've proved they can win silverware. They've proved they can beat the top teams in the league. It's now time to step up and be counted in these final games.

"We had a poor result on Wednesday night. You concede four goals, really, really disappointing, individuals not doing their job properly. That's a real frustration for us and it's a frustration obviously for the individuals as well.

"We have to be better than that," he continued.

St Mirren manager Stephen Robinson oversees training

"I believe Hibs are a very good side. I thought they were very good against Hearts in stages. I believe they've recruited really, really well. This is a tough game, one of the toughest games of the season that we go to. We have to produce the performance we've done in the past.

We've shown we're capable of that. We've done that against Hearts. We have to have the same level of performance, the same level of commitment, the same level of desire not to concede goals as we did in that game as opposed to Wednesday night. There has to be a reaction to that.

"Then you hope in the coming weeks we get Mark and we get Keanu back and you get the middle of the spine of your team back again. It's a tough game, but one that if we play at the top of the game, we've proved we can beat anybody in the league."

Jake Young comes back into contention as he returns from suspension, while captain Mark O'Hara will be assessed. The manager says Jonah Ayunga will be unavailable for Saturday's trip to face Hibernian at Easter Road and the game comes too soon for Keanu Baccus.

"Jonah's broke down with a calf injury, we're having to have that scanned," he told the media this morning.

"He's only trained one day fully and then pulled up with his calf, so we have to rule out what that is first and foremost so that's a blow.

"Keanu is training, but not fully. He's got the okay to open his legs and sprint properly, which is a problem with tendon injuries, but this would be his first introduction to training today. The Motherwell game still might come a little bit early for him, but we never know. He's such a fit boy, but certainly this will be too early for him.

"Mark has trained a couple of days, so we'll assess Mark. He's obviously been out a long time, so he wouldn't be somebody that goes straight back into the team. Injury-wise, it's not got much clearer. Jake Young will be available again from suspension, so that gives us a little boost in the forward areas anyway."

Keanu Baccus returned to Saints training

The manager also told of how Malik Dijksteel is set for an extended period on the sidelines. The Dutch winger picked up a groin injury in our Scottish Cup Fifth Round win over Airdrieonians and now looks set for surgery.

"It's really bad news, he's probably out for the season. He's torn his groin off the bone and will likely require surgery. He's seeing the specialist in London."

The Buddies saw a five game unbeaten run come to an end after a 4-3 defeat to Kilmarnock at Rugby Park on Wednesday evening. Despite the defeat, Stephen Robinson's men remain in ninth place.

Hibernian go into Saturday's match off the back of a 1-0 defeat away to Hearts in the Edinburgh derby. Their previous outing at Easter Road saw them come from behind late in the match to win 3-2 against Dundee United. That victory has put to an end a run of four without a win in all competitions after draws with Rangers (0-0) and Motherwell (1-1) and defeats to Falkirk (1-4) and Dunfermline (0-1).

David Gray's men sit in fifth place in the William Hill Premiership, level on points with sixth place Falkirk and five behind fourth place Motherwell.

Neither side could be separated when the Buddies visited Easter Road in August. Miguel Freckleton gave Saints the lead, but Rocky Bushiri's equaliser gave the hosts a share of the spoils. Hibs took the points in the last meeting between the two, winning 3-0 at The SMiSA Stadium in November.

Saints defeated on the road after 4-3 loss to Kilmarnock

St Mirren saw a five game unbeaten run come to an end after a disappointing 4-3 defeat to Kilmarnock at Rugby Park.

Defensive lapses cost St Mirren dearly as we failed in an opportunity to climb to eighth in the William Hill Premiership.

There was one change to the side that defeated Airdrieonians in the Scottish Gas Scottish Cup with Roland Idowu coming in for the suspended Jake Young.

The Buddies started well and took the lead when Killian Phillips opened the scoring on eight minutes. Richard King's long-throw was headed back to the Jamaican by the Kilmarnock defence and he nodded into the area where it found Mikael Mandron. The striker couldn't get the ball under control, but it did manage to find its way to Phillips who back-heeled beyond Kelle Roos to score his sixth goal of the season.

Beyond the goal, there was very little created in the opening 40 minutes or so with neither goalkeeper having much to do. But two goals in the space of two minutes flipped the game in Kilmarnock's favour at the end of the half. Ex-Saint Greg Kiltie drew the hosts level on 43 minutes when he met a cross from Findlay Curtis and bulleted home a header from close-range. Killie then took the lead in stoppage time with Tyreece John-Jules' overhead kick giving Neil McCann's side the advantage at the break. Saints could only partially clear a corner to Curtis whose shot from 20 yards deflected into the path of John-Jules who acrobatically finished beyond Shamal George.

Stephen Robinson responded to the first-half showing with a substitution at the interval, introducing Dan Nlundulu in place of Jayden Richardson. Saints looked more lively and almost drew level less than a minute after the restart with Idowu forcing a massive save from Roos. King's ball over the top bounced off Mandron and fell for Idowu who struck well but saw his effort pushed over.

The Buddies would grab a quick equaliser with Phillips getting his second of the evening. Mandron showed great strength to force his way to the byline and send the ball across the face. Roos could only palm the ball back to Phillips who slammed home from six yards.

Nlundulu passed up a big opportunity to fire Saints back in front before the hour mark. The Kilmarnock defence couldn't clear after a brilliant bit of trickery from Idowu and that saw the ball fall to Jacob Devaney 25 yards from goal. He found Mandron in the box who worked it to Nlundulu on his left, but the forward's strike was tame and easy for Roos to gather. A minute later Idowu sent a teasing ball across the face with Declan John inches away from sticking a toe on it to turn into the net.

It was Kilmarnock, however, who re-took the lead with less than 15 minutes minutes remaining. A ball over the top from Michael Schjønning-Larsen found Joe Hugill running down the left. His cross was perfect for John-Jules and while the striker was initially thwarted by George, he would finish the follow up to put Kilmarnock back in front. The hosts extended their advantage five minutes later. Another long ball over the top from Robbie Deas saw John-Jules outmuscle John and slot beyond George to score his hat-trick and earn Kilmarnock the points.

Saints substitute Jalmaro Calvin should have reduced the deficit when he was found by Nlundulu, but the forward shot straight at Roos as the game headed into injury-time. Scott Tanser would pull a goal back in the dying embers though it was too little too late as we left Rugby Park empty-handed.
