Disappointing afternoon as Buddies beaten by Kilmarnock

St Mirren suffered just a second defeat of the season as we fell to a 2-0 loss away to Kilmarnock in the William Hill Premiership.

First-half goals from David Watson and Marcus Dackers were enough to see Saints leave Rugby Park empty handed on a blustery Ayrshire day. The Buddies had plenty of the ball as they tried to find a way to take something back to Paisley, but failed to make Kilmarnock goalkeeper Max Stryjek work on a disappointing afternoon.

Manager Stephen Robinson named the same starting 11 as the side that defeated Dundee at The SMiSA Stadium last Saturday. That meant Alex Gogic one again skippered the side in the absence of the injured pair of Mark O'Hara and Marcus Fraser. Keanu Baccus shook off an injury to take a place on the bench, while Killian Phillips made his 50th appearance for the Saints.

Saints started the better of the two sides, seeing more of the ball and forcing a half chance on five minutes. Gogic got his head on a Declan John corner, but glanced wide of the far post. Jonah Ayunga was presented an opportunity when a Shamal George goal kick carried all the way to the Kenyan forward who managed to make his way into the box. He eventually got it under control before seeing his strike blocked by George Stanger.

The hosts took the lead from nowhere with Watson breaking the deadlock on 27 minutes. The home side hadn't looked much of a threat but won the ball in the midfield with Greg Kiltie lifting a ball over the top for Bruce Anderson. The striker raced away from Richard King before forcing a strong one-handed save from George. But Watson was quickest to react to the loose ball, slamming into the net.

Kilmarnock added a second nine minutes later when Dackers found himself unmarked in the area to bullet home a header from James Brown cross.

Saints' day would almost be summed up by a VAR check for a penalty coming to nothing just before the interval. King's header looked like it may have come off Robbie Deas' arm and the game was briefly halted for a check. No penalty was given.

The manager reacted to the first-half showing with a triple substitution at the interval with Baccus, Conor McMenamin and Dan Nlundulu replacing King, Roland Idowu and Mikael Mandron.

But it was Kilmarnock who threatened to extend their lead after the restart with Dackers forcing a good save from the feet of George. Anderson's follow up was blocked before Dackers eventually fired wide.

Saints would make another two changes with Malik Dijksteel and Evan Mooney being introduced in place of Liam Donnelly and Ayunga. The Buddies continued to have the bulk of possession, but failed to create anything that would give them a route into the match. Kilmarnock substitute Djenairo Daniels passed up a big opportunity to add a third heading into the final 10 minutes of the match when he was found in plenty of space inside the area, but he fired well over.

Team News: Kilmarnock v St Mirren // Saints Unchanged

Stephen Robinson has named an unchanged starting line-up for this afternoon's William Hill Premiership match away to Kilmarnock.

Alex Gogic captains the side again in the absence of Mark O'Hara and Marcus Fraser. Keanu Baccus has recovered from an injury that kept him out of last weekend's win over Dundee, but he's only fit enough for a place on the substitutes bench. After scoring the winner last week, Killian Phillips makes his 50th St Mirren appearance this afternoon.

Kilmarnock also named an unchanged 11 after they defeated Dundee United 2-0 in the William Hill Premiership last weekend.

Subs: Mullen, Tanser, Taylor, Baccus, McMenamin, Dijksteel, Calvin, Mooney, Nlundulu

Kilmarnock match will come down to who is better on the day says Stephen Robinson

Stephen Robinson says that Saints' recent Premier Sports Cup victory over Kilmarnock will have no bearing on tomorrow afternoon's trip to Rugby Park.

The Buddies defeated the Ayrshire side 5-3 on penalties after the two couldn't be separated following 120 minutes of action two weeks ago.

But the gaffer has stressed that there's little between the sides as they get set to meet again, this time in William Hill Premiership action.

"We go to Kilmarnock tomorrow and we know there’s nothing between the sides. There was nothing between us in the cup and nothing between us in the last two seasons. We know we have to do the same things time and time again.

Good teams do the simple things better than others and they continually do it. That’s what we have to reiterate."

"Stuart's [Kettlewell] done very well. They've got that cup game out their system with a fantastic result at Dundee United which is a difficult place to go to. I think it will be who comes out best on the day.

"We have to do the simple things better than them and if we can get a result there then we'll put it down as a very good start."

Stephen Robinson Pre-Kilmarnock

Saints travel to Kilmarnock on the back of a 1-0 win over Dundee at The SMiSA Stadium that moved the Buddies to third place in the William Hill Premiership and extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to seven matches.

The key to that good start, the manager says, has been a defensive solidity that has seen Saints concede the second fewest goals in the league this season.

"I think it’s been a really good start," he said. "We’re seven unbeaten and I think we’ve lost one game in 18.

"As a manager and staff we’re really pleased with what we’ve got but we feel we could have more points.

"A couple of the decisions we’ve made could have went better for us but when we look on paper, we had a really, really difficult start and people said we would struggle. We haven’t. We’ve shown we can compete with everybody in this league and we’re in the semi-final of a cup.

"But that’s where you have to be very careful. You can’t let any complacency set in, you can’t think it’ll automatically happen and you’ll turn up and win football matches.

Everything's built on solidity. If you're hard to break down and you're hard to beat, then it's a good starting point."

"We've made numerous changes. The goalkeeper, Shamal [George], has come in and been fantastic for us.

"We've created real assets in Jayden Richardson, Richard King – who'll go to the World Cup – Miguel Freckleton, added with the guys who were already there. The new players have settled in really well.

"I believe there's so much more to come from them. They're just getting their confidence."

The manager also gave an update on injured trio Mark O'Hara, Marcus Fraser and Keanu Baccus who all missed out last week.

"Marcus has made brilliant progress as we thought he'd be a real long one so credit to the medical staff. He's back running but won't be available for tomorrow.

"Mark has had an injection in his foot and it's a little bit slower but we're hopeful he'll be fit for after the international break.

"Keanu has surprised all of us. He's had his scan and we were a little bit wary of it. He may join in little bits and pieces of training and we'll see how he reacts to that before making a decision."

Saturday's 1-0 win over Dundee saw St Mirren make it two victories on the bounce in the William Hill Premiership. Killian Phillips' fifth goal of the season gave Saints all three points and saw Stephen Robinson's men move into third place in the league.

The Buddies prevailed on penalties when we visited Rugby Park in the Premier Sports Cup less than two weeks ago. A 2-2 draw after 90 minutes saw the game go to extra-time and penalties with Saints coming out on top.

Stephen Robinson's side are unbeaten in their last seven matches in all competitions and have lost just one of their last 18 matches.

Kilmarnock picked up their first William Hill Premiership victory of the season last weekend after an impressive 2-0 win away to Dundee United. Goals from Bruce Anderson and Robbie Deas saw Stuart Kettlewell's side pick up three points at Tannadice.

Killie's first Premiership win sees them sit two points behind Saints in the table. Despite just one win, they have drawn four of their league matches this season with their solitary defeat, like Saints, coming against Celtic.

Three points for Saints as unbeaten run extended to seven games

St Mirren made it two wins from two in the William Hill Premiership and extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to seven matches.

Killian Phillips' first-half goal was the difference as Stephen Robinson's men moved into third place in the William Hill Premiership.

The manager was forced into two changes from the side that defeated Kilmarnock on penalties in the Premier Sports Cup last week. Captain Mark O'Hara and Keanu Baccus missed out with injury so Liam Donnelly came in for his first Saints start, while Roland Idowu was in from the beginning.

The day started with a minute's applause to pay our respects to Saints legend Jimmy Bone who sadly passed away at the age of 75 earlier this month.

A scrappy start at the rain-soaked SMiSA Stadium saw the Buddies with the majority of possession in the opening stages but they only had a long-range strike from Idowu that flew over to show for it.

Drey Wright forced a good save from Shamal George on 18 minutes with a fierce strike from the edge of the area that was pushed wide by the Saints stopper.

Alex Gogic, who had taken the captain's armband, had the Buddies' best early opportunity on 22 minutes. Killian Phillips' throw-in bobbed about before falling to Idowu who forced it back to Gogic on the edge of the area. The Cypriot defender got a lot of power behind the effort, but Dundee goalkeeper Jon McCracken was able to hold the low shot.

Saints started to take more of a grip on the match and came close to finding the opener twice inside the space of a minute. Jonah Ayunga forced a good save from McCracken who was at full-stretch to turn away the forward's shot from 20 yards. A minute later, Ayunga again got in behind the Dee defence. This time he rolled it back to Idowu who curled agonisingly wide of the far post from the edge of the box.

The deadlock was broken six minutes before the break with Killian Phillips netting his fifth goal of the season. The Irishman was on hand to turn home from six yards as he got the final touch on Mandron's strike to score his first league goal of 2025/26.

There was little to report in the opening 15 minutes after the restart. Ethan Hamilton's vicious strike was  However, Saints could have added a second just after the hour mark when a good switch from Freckleton found Richardson down the right-hand side. The wing-back played a dangerous low ball across the face, but no one in black and white could get on the end of it.

The manager made his first change of the game on 68 minutes when Saints youth academy graduate Fraser Taylor was introduced in place of Donnelly. That was followed by the double substitution of Conor McMenamin and Dan Nlundulu who replaced Idowu and Ayunga on 75 minutes.

The game was fizzling out, but with 1-0 a precarious lead Saints were searching for a second to kill it off and nearly did so heading into stoppage time. Phillips stole the ball off a Dundee defender deep in the Dee half and drove forward before cracking a shot just wide of the mark from 20 yards. Dundee would try to force pressure with some late corners, but the Saints defence stood strong to ensure a clean sheet and three points.

Supporters travelling to the match should be aware of ongoing major bridge refurbishment on the M8 at Junction 26 (Hillington Interchange) causing delays. As always, please plan your journey accordingly.

Visitor Information

  • Electronic Ticketing System

At the SMiSA Stadium we have an electronic ticketing system in place at the turnstiles.

The process of using the system is fairly straight-forward and easy to use:

    • On entering the turnstile you will see the ticket reader.
    • Place your match ticket (with the barcode or QR code facing upwards) or smartcard – into the aperture
    • Once the ticket/smartcard is accepted into the system the green light will illuminate and an audio alert will sound after which you should hear the turnstile being unlocked
    • Push the turnstile gate and enter the stadium as you normally would.

The whole process will only take a few seconds.

Please note that there will be stewards in attendance to help where required.

  • Street Parking on Matchday

The Club has been made aware of problems occasioned by inconsiderate parking in the area of Tannahill Road.

Seemingly supporters are parking despite the presence of double yellow lines and as a consequence local bus routes are also being blocked because streets in this area are narrow and fans are parking on both sides. People, many of whom are elderly, are having to walk from Greenhill Road to their homes because buses can’t get access.

Residents who have cars parked in driveways are experiencing similar difficulties getting their vehicles in and out. On being approached by local residents some supporters have been somewhat aggressive which could lead to confrontation.

St Mirren Football Club strives to be a good neighbour and we would ask that ALL supporters attending the stadium not only park in accordance with local parking restrictions but also give consideration to the needs of local residents by parking sensibly so as not to occasion an unnecessary obstruction.

  • Picking Up & Dropping Off by Car on Match Day

We are also aware of problems with patrons parking at the front of the Main Stand to pick up disabled supporters at the end of the game. This area is a 'no parking' zone on match days (with cones on the road) and has to be kept clear for emergency access. It is an inappropriate location for disabled spectator uplifts, as not only does it cause an obstruction on the road, it also causes a danger to pedestrians leaving the stadium.

Please note that the designated pick-up/drop off points are either in Drums Avenue or the two lay-byes on Ferguslie Park Avenue.

  • Finding the SMiSA Stadium

  • Getting to the SMiSA Stadium

    BY ROAD

Follow signs for Paisley & Glasgow Airport. Exit the M8 at Junction 29 (St James’ Interchange) which is just after Glasgow Airport turn off if travelling east to west. Be careful not to exit on to the A737 which is signposted for Irvine. It is best to stay in the middle lane when passing the Airport as this leads naturally to the St James’ Interchange exit.

At the interchange take the first left onto a dual carriageway with some football parks on the left hand side. Follow this road and after a sharp right hand bend you should now be in Greenock Road. Then take your first right on to Clark Street and drive to the end of the street which is the junction with Greenhill Road, turn left and you will see the stadium on the opposite side of the road.

    BY RAIL

Get train from Paisley Gilmour Street to Paisley St James – exit from the station is straight onto Greenhill Road where the stadium is facing you. To plan your journey by rail with Scotrail please click HERE.

    BY BUS

Most buses will stop at Paisley Cross or Mill Street, from both you will see the Paisley Town Hall. From the Town Hall cross the High Street towards the Piazza Shopping Centre, when acoss walk towards the town centre until you come to Gilmour Street. Turn right on to Gilmour Street and walk towards the railway station which is about 150 yards away. From there you can get train to Paisley St James or if you prefer to walk the following routes are advised by the police:

Home fans: cross road to the left on to St James Street – follow through up Underwood Road then turn right at Greenhill Road where stadium is 200 yards further along the road. Access to the Main Stand is from Greenhill Road and the South and West Stands will be accessed from Drums Avenue.

Away fans: cross road to Love Street continue up the street till you come to Albion Street where you will turn left.
