Saints move back into top six after a point against Hibernian

St Mirren picked up a point to move back into the top six after a goalless draw against Hibernian at The SMiSA Stadium.

The Buddies had the better of the match, but couldn't find a breakthrough against one of the form teams in the league as Hibernian stretched their unbeaten run to 12.

Stephen Robinson elected to name the same starting eleven from Monday night's Scottish Cup tie against Hearts with Scott Tanser unable to make it after an epidural during the week.

A bright start saw Caolan Boyd-Munce have a shot blocked on 10 minutes with Killian Phillips' follow-up held by Hibernian goalkeeper Jordan Smith. But despite Saints having the better of the game, it was Hibernian who had best chance of the opening 45 when Warren O'Hora got a free header on a Nicky Cadden corner, but he sent the effort wide of target.

Saints came out of the traps after the break. Mikael Mandron forced a save from Smith with a long-range strike that the Hibernian goalkeeper got two hands behind to hold on 51 minutes. The Hibernian stopper then made a brilliant double save two minutes later. Mandron's slide rule pass found Toyosi Olusanya who burst clear of Rocky Bushiri and fired low from the angle. Smith blocked before getting a strong hand on Mark O'Hara's rebound that looked prime to put Saints ahead.

Olusanya came close to opening the scoring on 53 minutes

With 15 minutes remaining, referee Ross Hardie awarded Hibernian a penalty kick as he wrongly believe O'Hora's header came off Killian Phillips' hand. A VAR check followed and the referee overturned the decision after it was shown that the ball struck Phillips' head.

The visitors were reduced to 10 men when debutant Alasana Manneh was shown a second yellow card for a foul after clattering into the back of Phillips in the middle of the park. But despite the man advantage, Saints were unable to find a way of turning one point into three.

Full-Time: St Mirren 0-0 Hibernian

Subs Not Used: Urminsky, Kenny, Adeniran, Scott

Hibernian: Smith, O'Hora, Bushiri, Iredale (Obita 70), C.Cadden (Miller 88), Triantis, Campbell, Kwon (Manneh 70), N.Cadden (Moriah-Welsh 88), Boyle, Gayle (Bowie 56)

Embrace top six push says manager

St Mirren manager Stephen Robinson has told his players to embrace the challenge of a top six push as Saints head into the final eight games before the split.

Expectations have risen at the club after two consecutive top six finishes and the manager says things are positive in the Saints camp with his side sitting just one point off sixth place in the William Hill Premiership.

But Robinson insists there's nothing to lose for his Buddies and they should enjoy the opportunity available to them over the next eight matches.

Embracing the challenge

"There’s no pressure on us," the manager told the media.

If St Mirren get in the top six three years in a row, then I’ve told all the staff, I’m going to make statues of them. It is that big an achievement to do that three years in a row. So we’ve absolutely nothing to lose.

"We’re in a really good position. This can still be a fantastic season.

"As I say, if we were able to get top six three years in a row, then it would be an incredible achievement for this group of players. They’ve been there. They’ve played under the pressure. But this isn’t pressure. I’ve reiterated this to all the players.

"This is not pressure. Pressure is when you’re fighting for your life to stay up, you’re in a play-off in the last game of the season to keep people in their jobs.

This is the bit you go and enjoy, enjoy trying to look up a league, enjoy beating teams that people expect you to lose to, and go and get the results. We haven’t got the results. We’ve got performances over the last month without picking up the amount of results we should have done.

"We’re limiting teams to very, very few opportunities against us and getting punished for one goal, so that luck can’t keep being there all the time. Something has to go in our favour, and if we keep getting into areas, things will turn our way."

Confident Opponent

Saints have faced Hibernian twice this and came out on the winning side on both occasions. But on Sunday, the Buddies face a confident opponent with David Gray's men on an 11 match unbeaten run.

However, the manager believes that a similar performance from Monday night will give his side an a good opportunity to pick up three points.

"They've got some very talented players. They've got threats all over the pitch and they've got a good squad.

"It was a while ago that we played Hibs and they are on a fantastic run now. David has done a really good job in turning the form around so we have to be prepared.

"They've not changed personnel massively, but they're confident. They're a side that is going into the game against us with confidence.

If we put in the performance that we did against Hearts on Monday night then we have a very good chance of winning the game."

Stephen Robinson Pre-Hibernian

Squad Update

The manager also gave an update on the squad. It's likely to be as you were from Monday night with Conor McMenamin remaining out, while Alex Iacovitti and Scott Tanser are also doubts.

"We'll still be without Conor. He's still a good few weeks away. Alex is back in training, but had a slight little setback last week so we're hoping by Monday he'll be join in properly.

"Scott Tanser had an epidural. He's not trained all week so I'm not sure whether he will be available or not."

Visitor Information

  • Electronic Ticketing System

At the SMiSA Stadium we have an electronic ticketing system in place at the turnstiles.

The process of using the system is fairly straight-forward and easy to use:

    • On entering the turnstile you will see the ticket reader.
    • Place your match ticket (with the barcode or QR code facing upwards) or smartcard – into the aperture
    • Once the ticket/smartcard is accepted into the system the green light will illuminate and an audio alert will sound after which you should hear the turnstile being unlocked
    • Push the turnstile gate and enter the stadium as you normally would.

The whole process will only take a few seconds.

Please note that there will be stewards in attendance to help where required.

  • Street Parking on Matchday

The Club has been made aware of problems occasioned by inconsiderate parking in the area of Tannahill Road.

Seemingly supporters are parking despite the presence of double yellow lines and as a consequence local bus routes are also being blocked because streets in this area are narrow and fans are parking on both sides. People, many of whom are elderly, are having to walk from Greenhill Road to their homes because buses can’t get access.

Residents who have cars parked in driveways are experiencing similar difficulties getting their vehicles in and out. On being approached by local residents some supporters have been somewhat aggressive which could lead to confrontation.

St Mirren Football Club strives to be a good neighbour and we would ask that ALL supporters attending the stadium not only park in accordance with local parking restrictions but also give consideration to the needs of local residents by parking sensibly so as not to occasion an unnecessary obstruction.

  • Picking Up & Dropping Off by Car on Match Day

We are also aware of problems with patrons parking at the front of the Main Stand to pick up disabled supporters at the end of the game. This area is a 'no parking' zone on match days (with cones on the road) and has to be kept clear for emergency access. It is an inappropriate location for disabled spectator uplifts, as not only does it cause an obstruction on the road, it also causes a danger to pedestrians leaving the stadium.

Please note that the designated pick-up/drop off points are either in Drums Avenue or the two lay-byes on Ferguslie Park Avenue.

Match Preview: St Mirren v Hibernian (16th Feb)

Saints are at home again this weekend as focus turns to league action when we play host to Hibernian on Sunday in the William Hill Premiership.

All focus turns to league action following our penalty shoot-out defeat to Hearts in the Scottish Cup on Monday night. Mikael Mandron's first-half goal had Saints deservedly ahead, but a late equaliser saw Hearts take the game to extra-time and penalties where they prevailed 4-2.

With eight games remaining until the split, the Buddies sit in eighth in the William Hill Premiership, just three points behind Hibernian who are in fifth.

Kick-off: 2pm
Venue: The SMiSA Stadium

The Opposition

After a difficult start to the season, David Gray's side have hit form over the past two months and are unbeaten in 11 in all competitions. That run has propelled the Hibees into fifth place in the William Hill Premiership where they sit only two points off fourth place Aberdeen.

Hibs have drawn their two previous away matches in the league, being held 1-1 by Ross County and St Johnstone in January.

The Edinburgh side secured their passage into the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup with a 1-0 win away to Championship outfit Ayr United on Friday night where Rocky Bushiri's late goal was enough for progression.

St Mirren have come out on top in the two meetings between the two this season. Saints won 3-0 at The SMiSA Stadium on the opening day of the campaign thanks to a goal from Roland Idowu and a brace from Oisin Smyth. Conor McMenamin scored a double also in the meeting at Easter Road as the Buddies won 2-1 in November.

Saints exit Scottish Cup after penalty shoot-out loss to Hearts

St Mirren exited the Scottish Cup in cruel fashion after losing to Hearts in a penalty shoot-out at The SMiSA Stadium.

Mikael Mandron had Saints ahead and his first-half goal looked like being enough to send the Buddies through to the last eight. But Calem Nieuwenhof equalised with six minutes of normal time remaining to send the game to extra-time. An extra 30 minutes couldn't separate the sides and that meant penalty kicks. Oisin Smyth and James Scott saw their spot-kicks saved by Craig Gordon and despite Zach Hemming saving from Gerard Taylor, the away side prevailed 4-2.

Ryan Alebiosu came in for his debut after signing for Saints on deadline day, while Declan John also started. They came in for Elvis Bwomono and Scott Tanser with Tanser missing out with an injury.

The Buddies started the game brightly with Toyosi Olusanya having a big chance to open the scoring on just four minutes. Hemming's ball over the top found the forward, but he lifted over the bar.  The striker had another big opportunity 15 minutes later, but he couldn't get a proper connection on the ball which allowed Gordon to gather. In between, Hemming pulled off a big save when he was down low to push away a powerful strike from Elton Kabangu.

Saints hit the front on 23 minutes when Mandron opened the scoring from close-range. Mark O'Hara's effort was pushed away by Gordon, but only into the path of Mandron who tucked into the net.

Mikael Mandron celebrates with Toyosi Olusanya after putting Hearts ahead

Olusanya had a chance to double the Buddies advantage two minutes after the restart when he was sent in the clear by O'Hara. Coming in off the left, the forward made his way into the box before firing wide from an angle. Hearts had a big opportunity three minutes later when Blair Spittal curled just over the bar from 20 yards.

John was agonisingly close to securing our place in the last eight with a powerful low drive that Gordon was down brilliantly to touch wide. There were huge shouts for a St Mirren penalty from the resulting corner when Beni Baningime handled inside the box, but the VAR check said no.

How Saints would be left to rue that decision with Hearts drawing level almost immediately after. The Buddies defence couldn't clear their lines and that allow substitute Nieuwenhof to equalise. The away side almost won in at the death when Wilson managed to send Kabangu clear on goal. The Hearts forward rounded Hemming and looked to tuck his shot into the net only for Caolan Boyd-Munce to slide in to stop it crossing the line.

Both sides had a chance each in extra-time. In the first period, Marcus Fraser saw a strike from the edge of the area take a deflection and go just wide while Penrice saw a free-kick brilliantly tipped over the bar by Hemming.

Hearts won the toss and went first in the shoot-out. James Wilson scored his emphatically, while Gordon saved Smyth's effort to give Hearts an early advantage. They doubled that advantage when Kenneth Vargas squeezed one by Hemming before Scott had his attempt saved. Jorge Grant made it 3-0 despite Hemming coming close to saving. Evan Mooney got Saints on the scoresheet with a brilliant effort to keep the Buddies in it. Gerald Taylor had a chance to win it for the visitors but Hemming saved. Marcus Fraser then sent Gordon the wrong way to reduce the deficit. But Penrice fired home his attempt to send Hearts into the last eight.

The Opposition

Hearts secured their place in the Fifth Round of the Scottish Gas Scottish Cup with a 4-1 win away to Brechin City.

Neil Critchley's men have hit form in recent weeks, having won five of their last six matches in all competitions,  culminating in a 6-0 win away to Dundee in the William Hill Premiership last weekend.

Both sides have a win each after two meetings between the two so far this season. Richard Taylor forced an own goal before Toyosi Olusanya netted the winner for Saints in a 2-1 victory over Hearts at The SMiSA Stadium in September. Hearts were victorious in the following match at Tynecastle, winning 4-0 in Neil Critchley's first match in charge of the Gorgie side.

The Jam Tarts picked up the win the last time the two met in the Scottish Cup. Despite goals from Eamonn Brophy and Connor Ronan seeing Saints fightback from 2-0 down, Hearts prevailed 4-2 at Tynecastle in the quarter-final stage back in March 2022.
